< Leviticus 26 >

1 “Don't make yourselves idols anywhere in your land and bow down to worship them, whether they are images or sacred pillars or stone sculptures. For I am the Lord your God.
Ye shall not make unto you idols, —neither image nor pillar, shall ye set up for yourselves, nor sculptured stone, shall ye place in your land, to bow yourselves down thereunto, -For, I Yahweh, am your God.
2 Keep my Sabbaths and show respect for my sanctuary. I am the Lord.
My sabbaths, shall ye observe, And, my sanctuary, shall ye revere, —I, am Yahweh.
3 If you follow my rules and keep my regulations,
If, in my statutes, ye will walk, —And my commandments, ye will observe, and do them,
4 I will make sure it rains at the right time so that the ground will grow good crops and the fruit trees will be productive.
Then will I give your rains in their season, —And the land shall yield her increase, And, the trees of the field, shall yield their fruit.
5 Your time of threshing will last right up to the grape harvest, and the grape harvest until the time you have to sow again. You will have more than enough to eat and you will live in safety in your land.
Then shall your threshing reach unto the vintage, And, the vintage, shall reach unto the seedtime, —And ye shall eat your food to the full, And shall dwell securely in your land.
6 I will make sure your land is at peace. You will be able to sleep without being afraid of anything. I will get rid of dangerous animals from the land, and you will not suffer from any violent enemy attacks.
And I will give peace in the land, And ye shall lie down, and nothing shall make you afraid; And I will take away vicious beasts out of the land; And, the sword, shall not go through your land.
7 You will chase your enemies, and kill them with the sword.
And ye shall chase your foes, —And they shall fall before you by the sword;
8 Five of you will kill one hundred, and one hundred of you will kill ten thousand. You will destroy your enemies.
And, five, of you shall chase, a hundred, And, a hundred, of you shall put ten thousand to flight, —So shall your foes fall before you, by the sword.
9 I will come to help you, so you will reproduce and increase in numbers, and I will confirm my agreement with you.
And I will turn unto you, And make you fruitful, —And multiply you, And will establish my covenant with you.
10 You'll still be eating your old stock of grain when you need to get rid of it so you can store the new grain.
And ye shall eat old store well seasoned, —And the old from before the new, shall ye put forth.
11 I will come and live with you—I certainly won't reject you.
And I will set my habitation in your midst, —And my soul shall not abhor you;
12 I shall always be right there with you. I will be your God, and you will be my people.
But I will walk to and fro in your midst, And will be unto you a God, And, ye, shall be unto me a people.
13 I am the Lord your God, who led you out of Egypt so you wouldn't have to be slaves to the Egyptians any longer. I smashed the yoke that kept you bent down and helped you to stand up straight.
I—Yahweh, am your God who brought you forth out of the land of Egypt, that ye should not be their bondmen; so I brake in pieces the staves of your yoke, and caused you to walk, erect.
14 But if you don't pay attention to me and do what I tell you;
But, if ye will not hearken unto me, And will not do all these commandments;
15 if you reject my laws, hate my regulations, and refuse to follow my commandments, and consequently break my agreement,
And if, my statutes, ye refuse, And, my regulations, your souls shall abhor, —So that ye will not do all my commandments, But shall break my covenant
16 then this is what I am going to do to you: I will make you panic, and suffer from diseases like tuberculosis and fever that make you blind and drain your life away. It will be pointless for you to sow seed in your fields because your enemies will eat the harvest.
I also, will do this unto you—I will set over you, for terror, consumption and fever, Causing the eyes to fail and the soul to pine away, —And ye shall sow, in vain, your seed, for it shall be eaten by your foes.
17 I will turn against you, and you'll be defeated by your enemies. People who hate you will rule over you, and you'll run away even when there's no one chasing you!
And I will set my face against you, And ye shall be smitten before your foes, -And be trodden down by them who hate you, And shall flee when no one is pursuing you.
18 If after all this you still refuse to obey me, I will move to punishing you seven times over for your sins.
And, if even with these things, ye will not hearken unto me, Then will I yet further correct you seven times, for your sins.
19 I will break your self-reliant strength you're so proud of, and make your sky hard as iron and your land hard as bronze.
So will I break your pomp of power, And will set your heavens as iron, and your land as bronze;
20 Your strength will be completely wasted because your land won't produce crops, and your trees won't produce fruit.
And your strength shall be spent in vain, —And your land shall not yield her increase, And the trees of the land, shall not yield their fruit.
21 If you go on opposing me and refusing to do what I tell you, I will make your punishments seven times worse, based on your sins.
If therefore, ye will go in opposition to me, And not be willing to hearken unto me, Then will I yet further plague you seven times according to your sins;
22 I will send wild animals to kill your children, wipe out your livestock, and make you so few in number that there won't be anyone on your roads.
And will send among you the wild-beast of the field And it shall rob you of your children, And cut off your cattle, And make you few in number; And your roads shall be silent.
23 However, if in spite of all this correction you still don't change but go on opposing me,
And, if, by these things, ye will not be corrected by me, —But will go in opposition to me,
24 then I will take action against you. I will punish you seven times over for your sins.
Then will, I also, go in opposition to you. And, I, even I, will plague you seven times for your sins;
25 I will send enemies with swords to attack you in retaliation for breaking the agreement. Even though you retreat into your towns for defense, I will plague you with disease, and you will be handed over to your enemies.
And will bring in upon you a sword that shall inflict the covenanted avenging: So shall ye be gathered into your cities, —Then will I send a pestilence into your midst, And ye shall be delivered into the hand of an enemy.
26 I will send a famine so bread is in short supply. One oven will serve the needs of ten women baking bread. It will be distributed by weight so that you'll eat but won't have enough.
When I have broken your staff of bread, then shall ten women bake your bread in one oven, And give back your bread by weight, —And ye shall eat and not be filled.
27 However, if in spite of all this you don't obey me, but go on opposing me,
And, if, with this, ye will not hearken to me, —But will go in opposition to me,
28 then I will take action against you in a rage of fury, and I will punish you myself seven times over for your sins.
Then will I go in a rage of opposition to you, —And I, even I, will correct you seven times for your sins;
29 You will eat the bodies of your own sons and daughters.
And ye shall eat the flesh of your sons, —Yea, even the flesh of your daughters, shall ye eat.
30 I will destroy your high places of worship, smash your altars of incense, and pile up your dead bodies on what remains of your idols, which also have no life at all. I will really despise you.
And I will destroy your high places And cut down your sun-pillars, And cast your carcases upon the carcases of your manufactured gods, —Thus shall my soul abhor you.
31 I will demolish your towns and destroy your pagan sanctuaries, and I will refuse to accept your sacrifices.
And I will give your cities unto desolation, And make your holy places dumb, —And will find no fragrance in your satisfying odour;
32 I will devastate your land myself, so that your enemies who come and live in it will be horrified at what has happened.
And, I, will make the land dumb, And your foes that dwell therein shall regard it with dumb amazement:
33 I'm going to scatter you among the nations. You will be chased out by armies with swords as your land is ruined and your towns are destroyed.
When, even you, I scatter among the nations, And make bare after you, a sword, Then shall your land become an astonishment, And your cities become a desolation.
34 At least then the land will be able to enjoy its Sabbaths all the time it's abandoned while you are in exile in the land of your enemies. The land will finally be able to rest and enjoy its Sabbaths.
Then, shall the land be paid her sabbaths, All the days she lieth desolate, While, ye, are in the land of your foes, —Then, shall the land keep sabbath, And pay off her sabbaths:
35 The whole time it's abandoned the land will observe the Sabbaths of rest that it wasn't able to do while you were living there.
All the days she lieth desolate, shall she keep sabbath, —the which she kept not as your sabbaths, —while ye dwelt thereupon.
36 I will make those of you who survive so discouraged that as you live in the lands of your enemies even the sound of a leaf blowing in the wind will scare you into running away! You'll run away like you're being chased by someone with a sword, and fall down even though no one is after you.
And as for such as are left of you, Then will I bring faintness into their heart, in the lands of their foes, —So that the sound of a driven leaf shall chase them, And they shall flee as though fleeing from a sword And they shall fall, when no one is pursuing;
37 You'll trip over each other as you run away from the attack, then though no one's there. You'll have no power to resist your enemies.
And they shall stumble one upon another as from before a sword, when, pursuer there is none; And ye shall not have wherewith to stand before your foes;
38 You'll die in exile and you'll be buried in a foreign country.
And ye shall perish among the nations, —And the land of your foes shall eat you up;
39 Those of you who do manage to survive in the countries of your enemies will wither away because of their guilt, decaying as they share the sins of their fathers.
And they who are left of you, shall melt away in their iniquity, in the lands of your foes; Yea also, in the iniquity of their fathers with them, shall they melt away.
40 They need to confess their sins and those of their fathers, acting in such an unfaithful way towards me, opposing me.
Then shall they confess their iniquity, And the iniquity of their fathers, In their unfaithfulness wherewith they had been unfaithful towards me; Yea moreover, because they had gone in opposition to me,
41 Because of this I took action against them and exiled them in the countries of their enemies. However, if they humbly give up their stubborn attitude and accept their punishment for their sins,
I also, must needs go in opposition to them, and bring them into the land of their foes, —Save only that, if, even then, their uncircumcised heart shall be humbled, And, even then, they shall accept as a payment the punishment of their iniquity,
42 then I will fulfill the agreement I made with Jacob, Isaac, and Abraham, and I will not forget my promise about the land.
Then will I remember my covenant with Jacob Yea moreover, my covenant with Isaac, Yea moreover, my covenant with Abraham, will I remember; And the land, will I remember.
43 For the land will be left empty by them, and it will enjoy its Sabbaths being abandoned. They will pay for their sins, because they rejected my rules and regulations.
For, the land, shall be left of them, And shall be paid her sabbaths, while she lieth desolate without them, They also, accepting, as a payment, the punishment of their iniquity, Because, yea because, my regulations, they refused, And my statutes, their soul abhorred.
44 But despite all this, even while they are living in land of their enemies, I will not reject or hate them so much as to destroy them and break my agreement with them, because I am the Lord their God.
And yet even so when they are in the land of their foes I have not refused them Neither have I abhorred them To make an end of them, To break my covenant with them, —For, I—Yahweh, am their God.
45 Because of them I will renew the agreement I made with their fathers, those I led out of Egypt as the other nations watched, in order that I might be their God. I am the Lord.”
Therefore will I remember in their behalf the covenant of their ancestors, —Whom, I brought forth out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the nations, that I might be their God—I—Yahweh.
46 These are the rules, regulations, and laws that the Lord set up between himself and the Israelites through Moses on Mount Sinai.
These are the statutes and the regulations and the laws, which Yahweh granted between himself, and the sons of Israel, —in Mount Sinai by the mediation of Moses.
