Exodus 32
1 When the people realized how long Moses was taking before he came back down the mountain, they went together to see Aaron. They told him, “Get up! Make some gods for us who can lead us because this man Moses who brought us out of the land of Egypt—we don't know what's happened to him!”
Le peuple, voyant que Moïse tardait à descendre de la montagne, s’assembla autour d’Aaron, et lui dit: Allons! fais-nous un dieu qui marche devant nous, car ce Moïse, cet homme qui nous a fait sortir du pays d’Égypte, nous ne savons ce qu’il est devenu.
2 “Bring to me the gold earrings that your wives, sons, and daughters are wearing,” Aaron replied.
Aaron leur dit: Otez les anneaux d’or qui sont aux oreilles de vos femmes, de vos fils et de vos filles, et apportez-les-moi.
3 So everyone took off the gold earrings they were wearing and brought them to Aaron.
Et tous ôtèrent les anneaux d’or qui étaient à leurs oreilles, et ils les apportèrent à Aaron.
4 He took what they gave him and using a molding tool cast an idol in the shape of a bull calf. They shouted out, “Israel, these are the gods that brought you out of the land of Egypt.”
Il les reçut de leurs mains, jeta l’or dans un moule, et fit un veau en fonte. Et ils dirent: Israël! Voici ton dieu, qui t’a fait sortir du pays d’Égypte.
5 When Aaron saw this, he built an altar in front of the golden calf and shouted out, “Tomorrow will be a festival to honor the Lord!”
Lorsqu’Aaron vit cela, il bâtit un autel devant lui, et il s’écria: Demain, il y aura fête en l’honneur de l’Éternel!
6 Early the next day they sacrificed burnt offerings and presented peace offerings. Then they sat down to celebrate with eating and drinking. Then they got up to dance, and it became like an orgy.
Le lendemain, ils se levèrent de bon matin, et ils offrirent des holocaustes et des sacrifices d’actions de grâces. Le peuple s’assit pour manger et pour boire; puis ils se levèrent pour se divertir.
7 Then the Lord told Moses, “Get back down, because your people that you brought out of Egypt are acting immorally.
L’Éternel dit à Moïse: Va, descends; car ton peuple, que tu as fait sortir du pays d’Égypte, s’est corrompu.
8 They have been so quick to abandon the way I ordered them to follow. They have made a metal bull calf idol for themselves, bowing before it in worship and offering sacrifices to it. They're saying, ‘These are the gods that brought you out of the land of Egypt.’”
Ils se sont promptement écartés de la voie que je leur avais prescrite; ils se sont fait un veau en fonte, ils se sont prosternés devant lui, ils lui ont offert des sacrifices, et ils ont dit: Israël! voici ton dieu, qui t’a fait sortir du pays d’Égypte.
9 “I know what these people are like,” the Lord continued saying to Moses. “They are so rebellious!
L’Éternel dit à Moïse: Je vois que ce peuple est un peuple au cou roide.
10 Now leave me! I am angry with them—let me finish them off! I will make you into a great nation.”
Maintenant laisse-moi; ma colère va s’enflammer contre eux, et je les consumerai; mais je ferai de toi une grande nation.
11 But Moses pleaded with the Lord his God, saying, “Why are you angry with the people you brought out of the land of Egypt with tremendous power and great strength?
Moïse implora l’Éternel, son Dieu, et dit: Pourquoi, ô Éternel! Ta colère s’enflammerait-elle contre ton peuple, que tu as fait sortir du pays d’Égypte par une grande puissance et par une main forte?
12 Why should the Egyptians be able to say, ‘He brought them out with the evil purpose of killing them in the mountains, wiping them off the face of the earth’? Turn from your fierce anger. Please change your mind over the threat against your people.
Pourquoi les Égyptiens diraient-ils: C’est pour leur malheur qu’il les a fait sortir, c’est pour les tuer dans les montagnes, et pour les exterminer de dessus la terre? Reviens de l’ardeur de ta colère, et repens-toi du mal que tu veux faire à ton peuple.
13 Remember you swore a promise your servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, telling them, ‘I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars of heaven, and give you all the land I promised to them, and they shall own it forever.’”
Souviens-toi d’Abraham, d’Isaac et d’Israël, tes serviteurs, auxquels tu as dit, en jurant par toi-même: Je multiplierai votre postérité comme les étoiles du ciel, je donnerai à vos descendants tout ce pays dont j’ai parlé, et ils le posséderont à jamais.
14 The Lord changed his mind over the disaster he threatened to cause his people.
Et l’Éternel se repentit du mal qu’il avait déclaré vouloir faire à son peuple.
15 Moses turned and went down the mountain, carrying the two stone tablets of the Law written on both sides.
Moïse retourna et descendit de la montagne, les deux tables du témoignage dans sa main; les tables étaient écrites des deux côtés, elles étaient écrites de l’un et de l’autre côté.
16 God had made the tablets, and God had engraved the writing himself.
Les tables étaient l’ouvrage de Dieu, et l’écriture était l’écriture de Dieu, gravée sur les tables.
17 When Joshua heard all the shouting from the camp, he said to Moses, “It sounds like fighting in the camp!”
Josué entendit la voix du peuple, qui poussait des cris, et il dit à Moïse: Il y a un cri de guerre dans le camp.
18 But Moses replied, “These are not the shouts of victory or of defeat. What I'm hearing is people partying!”
Moïse répondit: Ce n’est ni un cri de vainqueurs, ni un cri de vaincus; ce que j’entends, c’est la voix de gens qui chantent.
19 As he approached the camp he saw the bull calf idol and the dancing. He got so angry that he threw down the stone tablets and smashed them there at the foot of the mountain.
Et, comme il approchait du camp, il vit le veau et les danses. La colère de Moïse s’enflamma; il jeta de ses mains les tables, et les brisa au pied de la montagne.
20 He took the bull calf and burned it, and ground it into powder. Then he mixed this with water and made the Israelites drink it.
Il prit le veau qu’ils avaient fait, et le brûla au feu; il le réduisit en poudre, répandit cette poudre à la surface de l’eau, et fit boire les enfants d’Israël.
21 Then Moses asked Aaron, “What did these people do to you that you made them sin so badly?”
Moïse dit à Aaron: Que t’a fait ce peuple, pour que tu l’aies laissé commettre un si grand péché?
22 “Please don't get angry with me, my lord,” Aaron replied, “You yourself know how liable these people are to do evil.
Aaron répondit: Que la colère de mon seigneur ne s’enflamme point! Tu sais toi-même que ce peuple est porté au mal.
23 They told me, ‘Make some gods for us who can lead us because this man Moses who brought us out of the land of Egypt—we don't know what's happened to him!’
Ils m’ont dit: Fais-nous un dieu qui marche devant nous; car ce Moïse, cet homme qui nous a fait sortir du pays d’Égypte, nous ne savons ce qu’il est devenu.
24 So I said to them, ‘Anybody who has gold jewelry, take it off and give it to me.’ I threw the gold into the furnace and out came this bull calf.”
Je leur ai dit: Que ceux qui ont de l’or, s’en dépouillent! Et ils me l’ont donné; je l’ai jeté au feu, et il en est sorti ce veau.
25 Moses saw the people going completely wild because Aaron had let them, and that this had brought ridicule on them from their enemies.
Moïse vit que le peuple était livré au désordre, et qu’Aaron l’avait laissé dans ce désordre, exposé à l’opprobre parmi ses ennemis.
26 So he went and stood at the entrance to the camp, and shouted out, “Whoever is on the Lord's side, come and join me!” All the Levites gathered around him.
Moïse se plaça à la porte du camp, et dit: A moi ceux qui sont pour l’Éternel! Et tous les enfants de Lévi s’assemblèrent auprès de lui.
27 Moses told them, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel says: Each of you strap on a sword. Then go all through the camp from one end to the other and kill your brothers, friends, and neighbors.”
Il leur dit: Ainsi parle l’Éternel, le Dieu d’Israël: Que chacun de vous mette son épée au côté; traversez et parcourez le camp d’une porte à l’autre, et que chacun tue son frère, son parent.
28 The Levites did what Moses had told them, and that day around 3,000 men were killed.
Les enfants de Lévi firent ce qu’ordonnait Moïse; et environ trois mille hommes parmi le peuple périrent en cette journée.
29 Moses told the Levites, “Today you have dedicated yourselves to the Lord because you took action against your sons and brothers. Today you have gained a blessing for yourselves.”
Moïse dit: Consacrez-vous aujourd’hui à l’Éternel, même en sacrifiant votre fils et votre frère, afin qu’il vous accorde aujourd’hui une bénédiction.
30 The following day Moses spoke to the people, saying, “You have sinned very badly. But now I will go up to the Lord. Maybe I can get him to forgive your sin.”
Le lendemain, Moïse dit au peuple: Vous avez commis un grand péché. Je vais maintenant monter vers l’Éternel: j’obtiendrai peut-être le pardon de votre péché.
31 So Moses went back to the Lord. He said, “Please—the people have sinned very badly by making gods of gold for themselves.
Moïse retourna vers l’Éternel et dit: Ah! Ce peuple a commis un grand péché. Ils se sont fait un dieu d’or.
32 But now, if you will, forgive their sin. Otherwise just blot me out of the scroll in which you keep your records.”
Pardonne maintenant leur péché! Sinon, efface-moi de ton livre que tu as écrit.
33 But the Lord replied to Moses, “It's those who sinned against me who will be blotted out of my scroll.
L’Éternel dit à Moïse: C’est celui qui a péché contre moi que j’effacerai de mon livre.
34 Now go and lead the people to the place I told you about. Look, my angel will go before you, but at the time I decide to punish, I will punish them for their sin.”
Va donc, conduis le peuple où je t’ai dit. Voici, mon ange marchera devant toi, mais au jour de ma vengeance, je les punirai de leur péché.
35 The Lord brought a plague on the people because they made Aaron make the bull calf.
L’Éternel frappa le peuple, parce qu’il avait fait le veau, fabriqué par Aaron.
