1 Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, while his brother Philip was tetrarch of the region of Iturea and Trachonitis and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene,

2 during the high priesthood of Annas (also Caiaphas), the word of God came upon John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.
hAnan kiyaphAzcemau pradhAnayAjAkAvAstAM tadAnIM sikhariyasya putrAya yohane madhyeprAntaram Izvarasya vAkye prakAzite sati
3 So he went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for forgiveness of sins;
sa yarddana ubhayataTapradezAn sametya pApamocanArthaM manaHparAvarttanasya cihnarUpaM yanmajjanaM tadIyAH kathAH sarvvatra pracArayitumArebhe|
4 as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, saying: “A voice calling out: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord in the wilderness, make His paths straight.
yizayiyabhaviSyadvaktRgranthe yAdRzI lipirAste yathA, paramezasya panthAnaM pariSkuruta sarvvataH| tasya rAjapathaJcaiva samAnaM kurutAdhunA|
5 Every ravine will be filled up, and every mountain and hill will be leveled; the crooked parts of the roads will be straightened out, and the rough parts will be smoothed out;
kAriSyante samucchrAyAH sakalA nimnabhUmayaH| kAriSyante natAH sarvve parvvatAzcopaparvvatAH| kAriSyante ca yA vakrAstAH sarvvAH saralA bhuvaH| kAriSyante samAnAstA yA uccanIcabhUmayaH|
6 and all flesh will see the salvation of God.’”
IzvareNa kRtaM trANaM drakSyanti sarvvamAnavAH| ityetat prAntare vAkyaM vadataH kasyacid ravaH||
7 Then he said to the crowds that were coming out to be baptized by him: “You sons of poisonous snakes! Who tipped you off to flee from the coming wrath?
ye ye lokA majjanArthaM bahirAyayustAn sovadat re re sarpavaMzA AgAminaH kopAt palAyituM yuSmAn kazcetayAmAsa?
8 Well then, produce fruits befitting repentance, and don't even begin to say among yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as father,’ because I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones!
tasmAd ibrAhIm asmAkaM pitA kathAmIdRzIM manobhi rna kathayitvA yUyaM manaHparivarttanayogyaM phalaM phalata; yuSmAnahaM yathArthaM vadAmi pASANebhya etebhya Izvara ibrAhImaH santAnotpAdane samarthaH|
9 But even now the axe is being laid to the root of the trees; so then, every tree not producing good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”
aparaJca tarumUle'dhunApi parazuH saMlagnosti yastaruruttamaM phalaM na phalati sa chidyate'gnau nikSipyate ca|
10 So the people started asking him, “What then must we do?”
tadAnIM lokAstaM papracchustarhi kiM karttavyamasmAbhiH?
11 In answer he said to them, “He who has two coats, let him share with him who has none; and he who has food should do likewise.”
tataH sovAdIt yasya dve vasane vidyete sa vastrahInAyaikaM vitaratu kiMJca yasya khAdyadravyaM vidyate sopi tathaiva karotu|
12 Well even tax collectors came to be baptized by him and said to him, “Teacher, what must we do?”
tataH paraM karasaJcAyino majjanArtham Agatya papracchuH he guro kiM karttavyamasmAbhiH?
13 So He said to them, “Don't charge more than what was determined to you.”
tataH sokathayat nirUpitAdadhikaM na gRhlita|
14 So the soldiers started asking him too: “What about us? What must we do?” He said to them, “Don't extort or harass anyone, and be content with your wages.”
anantaraM senAgaNa etya papraccha kimasmAbhi rvA karttavyam? tataH sobhidadhe kasya kAmapi hAniM mA kArSTa tathA mRSApavAdaM mA kuruta nijavetanena ca santuSya tiSThata|
15 Now as the people were expectant and all were reasoning in their hearts concerning John, whether he just might be the Messiah,
aparaJca lokA apekSayA sthitvA sarvvepIti manobhi rvitarkayAJcakruH, yohanayam abhiSiktastrAtA na veti?
16 John anticipated them all saying: “I indeed am baptizing you with water, but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal straps I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with Holy Spirit and fire;
tadA yohan sarvvAn vyAjahAra, jale'haM yuSmAn majjayAmi satyaM kintu yasya pAdukAbandhanaM mocayitumapi na yogyosmi tAdRza eko matto gurutaraH pumAn eti, sa yuSmAn vahnirUpe pavitra Atmani majjayiSyati|
17 whose winnowing shovel is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor and gather the wheat into His barn, but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”
aparaJca tasya haste zUrpa Aste sa svazasyAni zuddharUpaM prasphoTya godhUmAn sarvvAn bhANDAgAre saMgrahISyati kintu bUSANi sarvvANyanirvvANavahninA dAhayiSyati|
18 (Indeed, with many other exhortations as well he kept on preaching to the people;
yohan upadezenetthaM nAnAkathA lokAnAM samakSaM pracArayAmAsa|
19 but Herod the tetrarch—being reproved by him concerning Herodias, his brother's wife, as also about all the wicked things that Herod perpetrated—
aparaJca herod rAjA philipnAmnaH sahodarasya bhAryyAM herodiyAmadhi tathAnyAni yAni yAni kukarmmANi kRtavAn tadadhi ca
20 added this also to them all: he actually locked John up in his prison.)
yohanA tiraskRto bhUtvA kArAgAre tasya bandhanAd aparamapi kukarmma cakAra|
21 Now when all the people were baptized, Jesus, having been baptized also, was praying, when the heaven was opened
itaH pUrvvaM yasmin samaye sarvve yohanA majjitAstadAnIM yIzurapyAgatya majjitaH|
22 and the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove and rested upon Him, and a Voice came out of heaven saying, “You are my beloved Son; in you I am always well pleased.”
tadanantaraM tena prArthite meghadvAraM muktaM tasmAcca pavitra AtmA mUrttimAn bhUtvA kapotavat taduparyyavaruroha; tadA tvaM mama priyaH putrastvayi mama paramaH santoSa ityAkAzavANI babhUva|
