Luke 3
1 Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, while his brother Philip was tetrarch of the region of Iturea and Trachonitis and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene,
| בשנת חמש עשרה למלכות הקיסר טיבריוס בהיות פונטיוס פילטוס הגמון ביהודה והורדוס שר רבע על הגליל ואחיו פילפוס שר רבע על מדינות יטור וטרכונה ולוסניס שר רבע על אבילין׃ |
2 during the high priesthood of Annas (also Caiaphas), the word of God came upon John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.
| בימי הכהנים הגדולים חנן וקיפא היה דבר אלהים אל יוחנן בן זכריה במדבר׃ |
3 So he went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for forgiveness of sins;
| ויבא אל כל ככר הירדן ויקרא טבילת התשובה לסליחת החטאים׃ |
4 as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, saying: “A voice calling out: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord in the wilderness, make His paths straight.
| ככתוב בספר דברי ישעיהו הנביא קול קורא במדבר פנו דרך יהוה ישרו מסלותיו׃ |
5 Every ravine will be filled up, and every mountain and hill will be leveled; the crooked parts of the roads will be straightened out, and the rough parts will be smoothed out;
| כל גיא ינשא וכל הר וגבעה ישפלו והיה העקב למישור והרכסים לבקעה׃ |
6 and all flesh will see the salvation of God.’”
| וראו כל בשר את ישועת אלהים׃ |
7 Then he said to the crowds that were coming out to be baptized by him: “You sons of poisonous snakes! Who tipped you off to flee from the coming wrath?
| ויאמר אל המון העם היצאים להטבל על ידו אתם ילדי הצפעונים מי הורה אתכם להמלט מפני הקצף הבא׃ |
8 Well then, produce fruits befitting repentance, and don't even begin to say among yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as father,’ because I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones!
| לכן עשו פרי הראוי לתשובה ואל תדמו בנפשכם לאמר אברהם הוא אבינו כי אני אמר לכם כי מן האבנים האלה יכל האלהים להקים בנים לאברהם׃ |
9 But even now the axe is being laid to the root of the trees; so then, every tree not producing good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”
| וכבר הושם הגרזן על שרש העצים והנה כל עץ אשר איננו עשה פרי טוב יגדע והשלך באש׃ |
10 So the people started asking him, “What then must we do?”
| וישאלהו המון העם לאמר מה אפוא נעשה׃ |
11 In answer he said to them, “He who has two coats, let him share with him who has none; and he who has food should do likewise.”
| ויען ויאמר אליהם מי אשר לו כתנות שתים הוא יחלק לאשר אין לו ומי אשר לו מזון ככה יעשה גם הוא׃ |
12 Well even tax collectors came to be baptized by him and said to him, “Teacher, what must we do?”
| ויבאו גם מוכסים להטבל ויאמרו אליו רבי מה נעשה׃ |
13 So He said to them, “Don't charge more than what was determined to you.”
| ויאמר אליהם אל תגבו יותר מחקכם׃ |
14 So the soldiers started asking him too: “What about us? What must we do?” He said to them, “Don't extort or harass anyone, and be content with your wages.”
| וישאלהו גם אנשי הצבא לאמר ואנחנו מה נעשה ויאמר אליהם איש אל תזעזעו ואל תלשינו איש ויהי די לכם בשכרכם׃ |
15 Now as the people were expectant and all were reasoning in their hearts concerning John, whether he just might be the Messiah,
| ויהי כאשר חכה העם וכלם חשבים בלבם לאמר אולי יוחנן הוא המשיח׃ |
16 John anticipated them all saying: “I indeed am baptizing you with water, but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal straps I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with Holy Spirit and fire;
| ויען יוחנן ויאמר לכלם הן אני טובל אתכם במים אבל בוא יבוא החזק ממני אשר אינני כדי להתיר את שרוך נעליו הוא יטבל אתכם ברוח הקדש ובאש׃ |
17 whose winnowing shovel is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor and gather the wheat into His barn, but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”
| אשר המזרה בידו להבר את גרנו ויאסף את דגנו אל אוצרו ואת המץ ישרפנו באש אשר לא תכבה׃ |
18 (Indeed, with many other exhortations as well he kept on preaching to the people;
| וכן עוד דברים אחרים הרבה בשר וגם הזהיר את העם׃ |
19 but Herod the tetrarch—being reproved by him concerning Herodias, his brother's wife, as also about all the wicked things that Herod perpetrated—
| והורדוס שר רבע המדינה אשר הוכח על ידו על אדות הורודיה אשת אחיו פילפוס ועל אדות כל הרע אשר עשה הורדוס׃ |
20 added this also to them all: he actually locked John up in his prison.)
| הוסיף על כל אלה גם את זאת ויסגר את יוחנן במשמר׃ |
21 Now when all the people were baptized, Jesus, having been baptized also, was praying, when the heaven was opened
| ויהי בהטבל כל העם וגם ישוע נטבל ומתפלל ויפתחו השמים׃ |
22 and the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove and rested upon Him, and a Voice came out of heaven saying, “You are my beloved Son; in you I am always well pleased.”
| וירד עליו רוח הקדש בדמות גוף כיונה ויהי קול מן השמים ויאמר אתה בני ידידי בך רצתה נפשי׃ |
23 (Beginning His ministry at about thirty years of age, being (so it was supposed) a son of Joseph, Jesus Himself was of Eli,
| והוא ישוע בהחלו היה כבן שלשים שנה ויחשבהו לבן יוסף בן עלי׃ |
24 of Matthan, of Levi, of Melchi, of Janna, of Joseph,
| בן מתת בן לוי בן מלכי בן יני בן יוסף׃ |
25 of Mattathiah, of Amos, of Nahum, of Esli, of Naggai,
| בן מתתיה בן אמוץ בן נחום בן חסלי בן נגי׃ |
26 of Maath, of Mattathiah, of Semei, of Joseph, of Judah,
| בן מחת בן מתתיה בן שמעי בן יוסף בן יודה׃ |
27 of Joannan, of Rhesa, of Zerubbabel, of Shealtiel, of Neri,
| בן יוחנן בן רישא בן זרבלל בן שאלתיאל בן גרי׃ |
28 of Melchi, of Addi, of Cosam, of Elmodam, of Er,
| בן מלכי בן אדי בן קוסם בן אלמדם בן ער׃ |
29 of Jose, of Eliezer, of Jorim, of Matthat, of Levi,
| בן יוסי בן אליעזר בן יורים בן מתת בן לוי׃ |
30 of Simeon, of Judah, of Joseph, of Jonam, of Eliakim,
| בן שמעון בן יהודה בן יוסף בן יונם בן אליקים׃ |
31 of Melea, of Menan, of Mattatha, of Nathan, of David,
| בן מליא בן מינא בן מתתה בן נתן בן דוד׃ |
32 of Jesse, of Obed, of Boaz, of Salmon, of Nahshon,
| בן ישי בן עובד בן בעז בן שלמון בן נחשון׃ |
33 of Amminadab, of Aram, of Joram, of Hezron, of Perez, of Judah,
| בן עמינדב בן ארם בן חצרון בן פרץ בן יהודה׃ |
34 of Jacob, of Isaac, of Abraham, of Terah, of Nahor,
| בן יעקב בן יצחק בן אברהם בן תרח בן נחור׃ |
35 of Serug, of Reu, of Peleg, of Eber, of Shela,
| בן שרוג בן רעו בן פלג בן עבר בן שלח׃ |
36 of Cainan, of Arphaxad, of Shem, of Noah, of Lamech,
| בן קינן בן ארפכשד בן שם בן נח בן למך׃ |
37 of Methuselah, of Enoch, of Jared, of Mahalaleel, of Cainan,
| בן מתושלח בן חנוך בן ירד בן מהללאל בן קינן׃ |
38 of Enosh, of Seth, of Adam, of God.)
| בן אנוש בן שת בן אדם בן אלהים׃ |
