< Luke 3 >

1 Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, while his brother Philip was tetrarch of the region of Iturea and Trachonitis and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene,
ⲁ̅ϩⲛ ⲥⲡⲙⲛⲧⲏ ⲇⲉ ⲛⲑⲏⲅⲉⲙⲟⲛⲓⲁ ⲛⲧⲓⲃⲉⲣⲓⲟⲥ ⲕⲁⲓⲥⲁⲣ ⲉϥⲟ ⲛϩⲏⲅⲉⲙⲱⲛ ⲉϫⲛ ϯⲟⲩⲇⲁⲓⲁ ⲛϭⲓ ⲡⲟⲛⲧⲓⲟⲥ ⲡⲓⲗⲁⲧⲟⲥ ⲉⲣⲉϩⲏⲣⲱⲇⲏⲥ ⲟⲛⲧⲉⲧⲣⲁⲣⲭⲏⲥ ⲉϫⲛ ⲧⲅⲁⲗⲓⲗⲁⲓⲁ ⲉⲣⲉⲫⲓⲗⲓⲡⲡⲟⲥ ⲡⲉϥⲥⲟⲛ ⲟⲛⲧⲉⲧⲣⲁⲣⲭⲏⲥ ⲉϫⲛ ϯⲧⲟⲩⲣⲁⲓⲁⲥ ⲙⲛ ⲧⲉⲧⲉⲧⲣⲁⲭⲱⲛⲓⲧⲓⲇⲟⲥ ⲛⲭⲱⲣⲁ ⲛⲙⲗⲩⲥⲁⲛⲓⲁⲥ ⲉϥⲟ ⲛⲧⲉⲧⲣⲁⲣⲭⲏⲥ ⲉⲧⲁⲃⲓⲗⲏⲛⲏ
2 during the high priesthood of Annas (also Caiaphas), the word of God came upon John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.
ⲃ̅ϩⲓⲁⲛⲛⲁⲥ ⲡⲁⲣⲭⲓⲉⲣⲉⲩⲥ ⲛⲙⲕⲁⲓⲫⲁⲥ ⲁⲡϣⲁϫⲉ ⲙⲡⲛⲟⲩⲧⲉ ϣⲱⲡⲉ ϣⲁⲓⲱϩⲁⲛⲛⲏⲥ ⲡϣⲏⲣⲉ ⲛⲍⲁⲭⲁⲣⲓⲁⲥ ϩⲛ ⲧⲉⲣⲏⲙⲟⲥ
3 So he went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for forgiveness of sins;
ⲅ̅ⲁϥⲉⲓ ⲇⲉ ⲉϩⲣⲁⲓ ⲉⲧⲡⲉⲣⲓⲭⲱⲣⲟⲥ ⲧⲏⲣⲥ ⲙⲡⲓⲟⲣⲇⲁⲛⲏⲥ ⲉϥⲕⲏⲣⲩⲥⲥⲉ ⲛⲟⲩⲃⲁⲡⲧⲓⲥⲙⲁ ⲙⲙⲉⲧⲁⲛⲟⲓⲁ ⲉⲕⲁⲛⲟⲃⲉ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ
4 as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, saying: “A voice calling out: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord in the wilderness, make His paths straight.
ⲇ̅ⲛⲑⲉ ⲉⲧⲥⲏϩ ϩⲙ ⲡϫⲱⲙⲉ ⲛⲛϣⲁϫⲉ ⲛⲏⲥⲁⲓⲁⲥ ⲡⲉⲡⲣⲟⲫⲏⲧⲏⲥ ϫⲉ ⲧⲉⲥⲙⲏ ⲙⲡⲉⲧⲱϣ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲓ ⲡϫⲁⲓⲉ ϫⲉ ⲥⲟⲃⲧⲉ ⲛⲧⲉϩⲓⲏ ⲙⲡϫⲟⲉⲓⲥ ⲛⲧⲉⲧⲛⲥⲟⲟⲩⲧⲛ ⲛⲛⲉϥⲙⲁ ⲙⲙⲟⲟϣⲉ
5 Every ravine will be filled up, and every mountain and hill will be leveled; the crooked parts of the roads will be straightened out, and the rough parts will be smoothed out;
ⲉ̅ⲉⲓⲁ ⲛⲓⲙ ⲛⲓⲙ ⲛⲁⲙⲟⲩϩ ⲛⲧⲉⲧⲟⲟⲩ ⲛⲓⲙ ϩⲓⲥⲓⲃⲧ ⲛⲓⲙ ⲑⲃⲃⲓⲟ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲛⲉⲧϭⲟⲟⲙⲉ ⲛⲁϣⲱⲡⲉ ⲉⲩⲥⲟⲩⲧⲱⲛ ⲙⲛ ⲛⲉⲧⲛⲁϣⲧ ⲉϩⲉⲛϩⲓⲟⲟⲩⲉ ⲉⲩⲥⲗⲉϭⲗⲱϭ
6 and all flesh will see the salvation of God.’”
ⲋ̅ⲁⲩⲱ ⲡⲉⲟⲟⲩ ⲙⲡϫⲟⲉⲓⲥ ⲛⲁⲩⲱⲛϩ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲛⲧⲉⲥⲁⲣⲝ ⲛⲓⲙ ⲛⲁⲩ ⲉⲡⲉⲩϫⲁⲓ ⲙⲡⲛⲟⲩⲧⲉ
7 Then he said to the crowds that were coming out to be baptized by him: “You sons of poisonous snakes! Who tipped you off to flee from the coming wrath?
ⲍ̅ⲛⲉϥϫⲱ ϭⲉ ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ⲡⲉ ⲛⲙⲙⲏⲏϣⲉ ⲉⲧⲛⲏⲟⲩ ⲉⲃⲁⲡⲧⲓⲍⲉ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲓⲧⲟⲟⲧϥ ϫⲉ ⲛⲉϫⲡⲟ ⲛⲛⲉϩϥⲟⲩⲓ ⲛⲓⲙ ⲡⲉⲛⲧⲁϥⲧⲁⲙⲱⲧⲛ ⲉⲡⲱⲧ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲏⲧⲥ ⲛⲧⲟⲣⲅⲏ ⲉⲧⲛⲏⲩ
8 Well then, produce fruits befitting repentance, and don't even begin to say among yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as father,’ because I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones!
ⲏ̅ⲁⲣⲓϩⲉⲛⲕⲁⲣⲡⲟⲥ ϭⲉ ⲉⲩⲙⲡϣⲁ ⲛⲧⲉⲧⲛⲙⲉⲧⲁⲛⲟⲓⲁ ⲛⲧⲉⲧⲛⲧⲙⲁⲣⲭⲓ ⲉϫⲟⲟⲥ ⲛϩⲏⲧⲧⲏⲩⲧⲛ ϫⲉ ⲟⲩⲛⲧⲁⲛ ⲡⲉⲛⲓⲱⲧ ⲁⲃⲣⲁϩⲁⲙ ϯϫⲱ ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ⲛⲏⲧⲛ ϫⲉ ⲟⲩⲛϭⲟⲙ ⲙⲡⲛⲟⲩⲧⲉ ⲉⲧⲟⲩⲛⲉⲥϣⲏⲣⲉ ⲛⲁⲃⲣⲁϩⲁⲙ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲛ ⲛⲉⲓⲱⲛⲉ
9 But even now the axe is being laid to the root of the trees; so then, every tree not producing good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”
ⲑ̅ϫⲓⲛ ⲧⲉⲛⲟⲩ ⲇⲉ ⲡⲕⲉⲗⲉⲃⲓⲛ ⲕⲏ ϩⲁⲧⲛⲟⲩⲛⲉ ⲛⲛϣⲏⲛ ϣⲏⲛ ⲛⲓⲙ ⲉⲧⲉⲛϥⲛⲁϯ ⲕⲁⲣⲡⲟⲥ ⲁⲛ ⲉⲛⲁⲛⲟⲩϥ ⲥⲉⲛⲁⲕⲟⲟⲣⲉϥ ⲛⲥⲉⲛⲟϫϥ ⲉⲡⲕⲱϩⲧ
10 So the people started asking him, “What then must we do?”
ⲓ̅ⲁⲛⲙⲏⲏϣⲉ ⲇⲉ ϫⲛⲟⲩϥ ⲉⲩϫⲱ ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ϫⲉ ⲟⲩ ϭⲉ ⲡⲉⲧⲛⲛⲁⲁⲁϥ ϫⲉⲕⲁⲥ ⲉⲛⲉⲱⲛϩ
11 In answer he said to them, “He who has two coats, let him share with him who has none; and he who has food should do likewise.”
ⲓ̅ⲁ̅ⲁϥⲟⲩⲱϣⲃ ⲉϥϫⲱ ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ⲛⲁⲩ ϫⲉ ⲡⲉⲧⲉⲟⲩⲛⲧⲁϥ ϣⲧⲏⲛ ⲥⲛⲧⲉ ⲙⲁⲣⲉϥϯⲟⲩⲉⲓ ⲙⲡⲉⲧⲉⲙⲙⲛⲧⲁϥ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲡⲉⲧⲉⲟⲩⲛⲧϥⲟⲓⲕ ⲙⲁⲣⲉϥⲓⲣⲉ ⲟⲛ ϩⲓⲛⲁⲉⲓ
12 Well even tax collectors came to be baptized by him and said to him, “Teacher, what must we do?”
ⲓ̅ⲃ̅ⲁϩⲉⲛⲕⲉⲧⲉⲗⲱⲛⲏⲥ ⲇⲉ ⲉⲓ ⲉϫⲓ ⲃⲁⲡⲧⲓⲥⲙⲁ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲓⲧⲟⲟⲧϥ ⲡⲉϫⲁⲩ ⲛⲁϥ ϫⲉ ⲡⲥⲁϩ ⲟⲩ ⲡⲉⲧⲛⲛⲁⲁⲁϥ
13 So He said to them, “Don't charge more than what was determined to you.”
ⲓ̅ⲅ̅ⲛⲧⲟϥ ⲇⲉ ⲡⲉϫⲁϥ ⲛⲁⲩ ϫⲉ ⲙⲡⲣⲣⲗⲁⲁⲩ ⲛϩⲟⲩⲟ ⲡⲁⲣⲁⲡⲉⲛⲧⲁⲩⲧⲟϣϥ ⲛⲏⲧⲛ
14 So the soldiers started asking him too: “What about us? What must we do?” He said to them, “Don't extort or harass anyone, and be content with your wages.”
ⲓ̅ⲇ̅ⲁⲩϫⲛⲟⲩϥ ⲇⲉ ⲛϭⲓ ⲛⲉⲧⲟ ⲙⲙⲁⲧⲟⲓ ⲉⲩϫⲱ ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ϫⲉ ⲟⲩ ϩⲱⲱⲛ ⲟⲛ ⲡⲉⲧⲛⲛⲁⲁⲁϥ ⲡⲉϫⲁϥ ⲛⲁⲩ ϫⲉ ⲙⲡⲣⲇⲓⲁⲥⲓ ⲉⲗⲁⲁⲩ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲙⲡⲣϩⲓⲗⲁ ⲉⲗⲁⲁⲩ ⲛⲧⲉⲧⲛϩⲱ ⲉⲣⲱⲧⲛ ⲉⲛⲉⲧⲛⲟⲯⲱⲛⲓⲟⲛ
15 Now as the people were expectant and all were reasoning in their hearts concerning John, whether he just might be the Messiah,
ⲓ̅ⲉ̅ⲉⲣⲉⲡⲗⲁⲟⲥ ⲇⲉ ϭⲱϣⲧ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲉⲩⲙⲉⲩⲉ ⲧⲏⲣⲟⲩ ϩⲛ ⲛⲉⲩϩⲏⲧ ⲉⲧⲃⲉ ⲓⲱϩⲁⲛⲛⲏⲥ ϫⲉ ⲙⲉϣⲁⲕ ⲛⲧⲟϥ ⲡⲉ ⲡⲉⲭⲥ
16 John anticipated them all saying: “I indeed am baptizing you with water, but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal straps I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with Holy Spirit and fire;
ⲓ̅ⲋ̅ⲁⲓⲱϩⲁⲛⲛⲏⲥ ⲇⲉ ⲟⲩⲱϣⲃ ⲉϥϫⲱ ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ⲟⲩⲟⲛ ⲛⲓⲙ ϫⲉ ⲁⲛⲟⲕ ⲙⲉⲛ ⲉⲓⲃⲁⲡⲧⲓⲍⲉ ⲙⲙⲱⲧⲛ ϩⲛ ⲟⲩⲙⲟⲟⲩ ϥⲛⲏⲩ ⲇⲉ ⲛϭⲓ ⲡⲉⲧϫⲟⲟⲣ ⲉⲣⲟⲓ ⲡⲁⲓ ⲉⲛϯⲙⲡϣⲁ ⲁⲛ ⲃⲃⲱⲗ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲙⲡⲙⲟⲩⲥ ⲙⲡⲉϥⲧⲟⲟⲩⲉ ⲛⲧⲟϥ ⲡⲉⲧⲛⲁⲃⲁⲡⲧⲓⲍⲉ ⲙⲙⲱⲧⲛ ϩⲛ ⲟⲩⲡⲛⲁ ⲉϥⲟⲩⲁⲁⲃ ⲛⲙⲟⲩⲕⲱϩⲧ
17 whose winnowing shovel is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor and gather the wheat into His barn, but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”
ⲓ̅ⲍ̅ⲡⲁⲓ ⲉⲧⲉⲣⲉⲡⲉϥϩⲁ ϩⲛ ⲧⲉϥϭⲓϫ ⲉⲧⲃⲃⲟ ⲙⲡⲉϥϫⲛⲟⲟⲩ ⲉⲥⲱⲟⲩϩ ⲉϩⲟⲩⲛ ⲙⲡⲉϥⲥⲟⲩⲟ ⲉⲧⲉϥⲁⲡⲟⲑⲏⲕⲏ ⲡⲧⲱϩ ⲇⲉ ⲛϥⲣⲟⲕϩϥ ϩⲛ ⲟⲩⲥⲁⲧⲉ ⲉⲙⲉⲥⲱϣⲙ
18 (Indeed, with many other exhortations as well he kept on preaching to the people;
ⲓ̅ⲏ̅ϩⲛ ϩⲉⲛⲕⲉⲙⲏⲏϣⲉ ⲇⲉ ⲉⲛⲁϣⲱⲟⲩ ⲛϣⲁϫⲉ ⲛⲉϥⲡⲁⲣⲁⲕⲁⲗⲉⲓ ⲙⲙⲟⲟⲩ ⲉϥⲧⲁϣⲉⲟⲉⲓϣ ⲙⲡⲗⲁⲟⲥ
19 but Herod the tetrarch—being reproved by him concerning Herodias, his brother's wife, as also about all the wicked things that Herod perpetrated—
ⲓ̅ⲑ̅ϩⲏⲣⲱⲇⲏⲥ ⲇⲉ ⲡⲧⲉⲧⲣⲁⲣⲭⲏⲥ ⲉⲩϫⲡⲓⲟ ⲙⲙⲟϥ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲓⲧⲟⲟⲧϥ ⲉⲧⲃⲉ ϩⲏⲣⲱⲇⲓⲁⲥ ⲑⲓⲙⲉ ⲙⲫⲓⲗⲓⲡⲡⲟⲥ ⲡⲉϥⲥⲟⲛ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲉⲧⲃⲉ ϩⲱⲃ ⲛⲓⲙ ⲙⲡⲟⲛⲏⲣⲟⲛ ⲉⲧⲁϩⲏⲣⲱⲇⲏⲥ ⲁⲁⲩ
20 added this also to them all: he actually locked John up in his prison.)
ⲕ̅ⲁϥⲟⲩⲉϩⲡⲉⲓⲕⲉ ⲉϫⲛ ⲛⲉϥⲕⲟⲟⲩⲉ ⲧⲏⲣⲟⲩ ⲁϥⲉⲧⲡⲓⲱϩⲁⲛⲛⲏⲥ ⲉϩⲟⲩⲛ ⲉⲡⲉϣⲧⲉⲕⲟ
21 Now when all the people were baptized, Jesus, having been baptized also, was praying, when the heaven was opened
ⲕ̅ⲁ̅ⲁⲥϣⲱⲡⲉ ⲇⲉ ϩⲙ ⲡⲧⲣⲉⲡⲗⲁⲟⲥ ⲧⲏⲣϥ ϫⲓ ⲃⲁⲡⲧⲓⲥⲙⲁ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲛⲧⲉⲣⲉⲓⲏⲥ ϫⲓ ⲁϥϣⲗⲏⲗ ⲁⲧⲡⲉ ⲟⲩⲱⲛ
22 and the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove and rested upon Him, and a Voice came out of heaven saying, “You are my beloved Son; in you I am always well pleased.”
ⲕ̅ⲃ̅ⲁⲡⲉⲡⲛⲁ ⲉⲧⲟⲩⲁⲁⲃ ⲉⲓ ⲉⲡⲉⲥⲏⲧ ⲉϫⲱϥ ϩⲛ ⲟⲩⲥⲙⲟⲧ ⲛⲥⲱⲙⲁ ⲛⲑⲉ ⲛⲟⲩϭⲣⲟⲟⲙⲡⲉ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲁⲩⲥⲙⲏ ϣⲱⲡⲉ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲛ ⲧⲡⲉ ϫⲉ ⲛⲧⲟⲕ ⲡⲉ ⲡⲁϣⲏⲣⲉ ⲡⲁⲙⲉⲣⲓⲧ ⲉⲛⲧⲁⲓⲟⲩⲱϣ ⲛϩⲏⲧⲕ
