Psalms 89
1 Of understanding, for Ethan the Ezrahite. The mercies of the Lord I will sing for ever. I will shew forth thy truth with my mouth to generation and generation.
Maskîl d’Ethân l’Esrahite. Toujours je chanterai les bontés du Seigneur; d’âge en âge, ma bouche proclamera ta fidélité.
2 For thou hast said: Mercy shall be built up for ever in the heavens: thy truth shall be prepared in them.
Car, dis-je, la bonté aura une durée éternelle; dans les cieux tu as rendu immuable ta fidélité.
3 I have made a covenant with my elect: I have sworn to David my servant:
"J’Ai conclu une alliance avec mon élu, fait un serment à mon serviteur David.
4 Thy seed will I settle for ever. And I will build up thy throne unto generation and generation.
Jusque dans l’éternité j’affermirai tes descendants, et maintiendrai ton trône de génération en génération." (Sélah)
5 The heavens shall confess thy wonders, O Lord: and thy truth in the church of the saints.
Et les cieux célèbrent tes merveilles, ô Seigneur, l’assemblée des saints ta fidélité.
6 For who in the clouds can be compared to the Lord: or who among the sons of God shall be like to God?
Car qui, au-dessus des, nuages, rivalise avec l’Eternel, égale le Seigneur parmi les fils des dieux?
7 God, who is glorified in the assembly of the saints: great and terrible above all them that are about him.
Dieu est infiniment révéré dans la réunion des saints, redoutable à tout ce qui l’entoure.
8 O Lord God of hosts, who is like to thee? thou art mighty, O Lord, and thy truth is round about thee.
Seigneur, Dieu-Cebaot, qui comme toi, est éternellement puissant? Ta fidélité rayonne autour de toi.
9 Thou rulest the power of the sea: and appeasest the motion of the waves thereof.
Tu domines l’orgueil de la mer; quand ses vagues se soulèvent, tu apaises leur fureur.
10 Thou hast humbled the proud one, as one that is slain: with the arm of thy strength thou hast scattered thy enemies.
Tu as écrasé la fière Egypte comme un blessé à mort; par ton bras puissant tu as dispersé tes ennemis.
11 Thine are the heavens, and thine is the earth: the world and the fulness thereof thou hast founded:
A toi le ciel! à toi aussi la terre! L’Univers et ce qu’il renferme, c’est toi qui as tout fondé.
12 The north and the sea thou hast created. Thabor and Hermon shall rejoice in thy name:
Le nord et le midi, c’est toi qui les as créés; le Thabor et le Hermon acclament ton nom.
13 Thy arm is with might. Let thy hand be strengthened, and thy right hand exalted:
Ton bras est armé de force, puissante est ta main, sublime ta droite.
14 Justice and judgment are the preparation of thy throne. Mercy and truth shall go before thy face:
La justice et le droit sont la base de ton trône, l’amour et la vérité marchent devant toi.
15 Blessed is the people that knoweth jubilation. They shall walk, O Lord, in the light of thy countenance:
Heureux le peuple connaissant les chants de victoire, cheminant, Eternel, à la lumière de ta face!
16 And in thy name they shall rejoice all the day, and in thy justice they shall be exalted.
Sans cesse ils sont en joie à cause de ton nom, et s’élèvent par ta justice.
17 For thou art the glory of their strength: and in thy good pleasure shall our horn be exalted.
Car la parure de leur force, c’est toi; par ta bienveillance s’élève notre puissance.
18 For our protection is of the Lord, and of our king the holy one of Israel.
Oui, notre défenseur s’appuie sur l’Eternel, notre roi sur le Saint d’Israël.
19 Then thou spokest in a vision to thy saints, and saidst: I have laid help upon one that is mighty, and have exalted one chosen out of my people.
Jadis tu parlas, dans une vision, à ton pieux serviteur, tu disais: "J’Ai donné mon appui à un héros, j’ai grandi un élu sorti du peuple.
20 I have found David my servant: with my holy oil I have anointed him.
J’Ai trouvé David, mon serviteur; avec mon huile sainte, je l’ai consacré,
21 For my hand shall help him: and my arm shall strengthen him.
lui, à qui ma main servira de soutien, et que mon bras armera de force.
22 The enemy shall have no advantage over him: nor the son of iniquity have power to hurt him.
Aucun ennemi ne saura le circonvenir, ni aucun malfaiteur l’humilier.
23 And I will cut down his enemies before his face; and them that hate him I will put to flight.
J’Écraserai devant lui ses agresseurs, et ceux qui le haïssent, je les abattrai.
24 And my truth and my mercy shall be with him: and in my name shall his horn be exalted.
Ma fidélité et ma bonté seront avec lui, et par mon nom grandira sa puissance.
25 And I will set his hand in the sea; and his right hand in the rivers.
J’Établirai sa domination sur la mer, et son empire sur les fleuves.
26 He shall cry out to me: Thou art my father: my God, and the support of my salvation.
Il me dira: "Tu es mon père, mon Dieu et le rocher de mon salut!"
27 And I will make him my firstborn, high above the kings of the earth.
En retour, je ferai de lui mon premier-né, supérieur aux rois de la terre.
28 I will keep my mercy for him for ever: and my covenant faithful to him.
Éternellement je lui conserverai mon amour, et mon alliance avec lui demeurera solide.
29 And I will make his seed to endure for evermore: and his throne as the days of heaven.
Je ferai durer toujours sa postérité, et son trône aussi longtemps que les cieux.
30 And if his children forsake my law, and walk not in my judgments:
Que si ses enfants abandonnent ma loi et refusent de suivre mes statuts,
31 If they profane my justices: and keep not my commandments:
s’ils violent mes préceptes et désobéissent à mes commandements,
32 I will visit their iniquities with a rod: and their sins with stripes.
je châtierai leur rébellion avec une verge, leur impiété par des fléaux.
33 But my mercy I will not take away from him: nor will I suffer my truth to fail.
Mais je ne lui retirerai pas mon amour, je ne mentirai pas à ma promesse.
34 Neither will I profane my covenant: and the words that proceed from my mouth I will not make void.
Je ne trahirai pas mon alliance, et l’énoncé de mes lèvres, je ne le changerai pas.
35 Once have I sworn by my holiness: I will not lie unto David:
Une fois que j’ai juré par ma sainteté que je ne tromperai pas la confiance de David,
36 His seed shall endure for ever.
sa postérité durera éternellement, et son trône sera stable devant moi à l’égal du soleil;
37 And his throne as the sun before me: and as the moon perfect for ever, and a faithful witness in heaven.
comme la lune, il sera à jamais inébranlable: dans les cieux vit un témoin fidèle." (Sélah)
38 But thou hast rejected and despised: thou hast been angry with thy anointed.
Et pourtant tu l’as délaissé, rejeté, ton élu; tu t’es emporté contre lui.
39 Thou hast overthrown the covenant of thy servant: thou hast profaned his sanctuary on the earth.
Tu as rompu l’alliance de ton serviteur, dégradé, jeté à terre son diadème.
40 Thou hast broken down all his hedges: thou hast made his strength fear.
Tu as démoli toutes ses murailles, changé en ruines ses châteaux forts.
41 All that pass by the way have robbed him: he is become a reproach to his neighbours.
Tous les passants l’ont mis au pillage, il est devenu un objet d’opprobre pour ses voisins.
42 Thou hast set up the right hand of them that oppress him: thou hast made all his enemies to rejoice.
Tu as élevé la droite de ses adversaires, rempli de joie tous ses ennemis.
43 Thou hast turned away the help of his sword; and hast not assisted him in battle.
Tu fais reculer le tranchant de son épée, tu ne le soutiens pas dans les combats.
44 Thou hast made his purification to cease: and thou hast cast his throne down to the ground.
Tu as mis fin à sa splendeur, et son trône, tu l’as fait crouler à terre.
45 Thou hast shortened the days of his time: thou hast covered him with confusion.
Tu as abrégé les jours de sa jeunesse, et tu l’as enveloppé de honte. (Sélah)
46 How long, O Lord, turnest thou away unto the end? shall thy anger burn like fire?
Jusqu’à quand, ô Eternel, te déroberas-tu obstinément, et ta colère brûlera-t-elle comme du feu?
47 Remember what my substance is for hast thou made all the children of men in vain?
Rappelle-toi combien je suis éphémère, combien est vaine la vie que tu donnes à tous les fils d’Adam.
48 Who is the man that shall live, and not see death: that shall deliver his soul from the hand of hell? (Sheol h7585)
Est-il un homme qui demeure en vie, sans voir venir la mort? Qui pourra soustraire son âme aux prises du Cheol? (Sélah) (Sheol h7585)
49 Lord, where are thy ancient mercies, according to what thou didst swear to David in thy truth?
Où sont tes anciens bienfaits, Seigneur, que, dans ta sincérité, tu avais promis à David?
50 Be mindful, O Lord, of the reproach of thy servants (which I have held in my bosom) of many nations:
Souviens-toi, Seigneur, des outrages dirigés contre tes serviteurs, que j’ai eu à porter dans mon sein, de la part de peuples si nombreux;
51 Wherewith thy enemies have reproached, O Lord; wherewith they have reproached the change of thy anointed.
outrages dont tes ennemis, Eternel, m’abreuvent, qu’ils déversent sur les pas de ton oint!
52 Blessed be the Lord for evermore. So be it. So be it.
Loué soit l’Eternel à jamais! Amen et Amen!
