Matthew 5
1 And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain, and when he was set down, his disciples came unto him.
Voyant la foule, il monta sur la montagne. Lorsqu'il se fut assis, ses disciples vinrent à lui.
2 And opening his mouth, he taught them, saying:
Il ouvrit la bouche et les enseigna, en disant,
3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
« Heureux les pauvres en esprit, car le Royaume des cieux est à eux.
4 Blessed are the meek: for they shall possess the land.
Heureux ceux qui pleurent, car ils seront réconfortés.
5 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
Heureux les doux, car ils hériteront de la terre.
6 Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after justice: for they shall have their fill.
Heureux ceux qui ont faim et soif de la justice, car ils seront remplis.
7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
Heureux les miséricordieux, car ils obtiendront la miséricorde.
8 Blessed are the clean of heart: for they shall see God.
Heureux ceux qui ont le cœur pur, car ils verront Dieu.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called children of God.
Heureux les artisans de la paix! car ils seront appelés enfants de Dieu.
10 Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Heureux ceux qui ont été persécutés pour la justice, car le Royaume des cieux est à eux.
11 Blessed are ye when they shall revile you, and persecute you, and speak all that is evil against you, untruly, for my sake:
Heureux serez-vous lorsque, à cause de moi, on vous outragera, on vous persécutera et on dira faussement toute sorte de mal contre vous.
12 Be glad and rejoice, for your reward is very great in heaven. For so they persecuted the prophets that were before you.
Réjouissez-vous, et soyez dans l'allégresse, car votre récompense sera grande dans les cieux. Car c'est ainsi qu'on a persécuté les prophètes qui ont été avant vous.
13 You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt lose its savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is good for nothing any more but to be cast out, and to be trodden on by men.
« Vous êtes le sel de la terre; mais si le sel a perdu sa saveur, avec quoi le salera-t-on? Il n'est alors bon à rien, sinon à être jeté dehors et foulé aux pieds des hommes.
14 You are the light of the world. A city seated on a mountain cannot be hid.
Vous êtes la lumière du monde. Une ville située sur une colline ne peut être cachée.
15 Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel, but upon a candlestick, that it may shine to all that are in the house.
On n'allume pas non plus une lampe pour la mettre sous un panier à mesurer, mais sur un support, et elle brille pour tous ceux qui sont dans la maison.
16 So let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
De même, que votre lumière brille devant les hommes, afin qu'ils voient vos bonnes œuvres et glorifient votre Père qui est dans les cieux.
17 Do not think that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets. I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.
« Ne croyez pas que je sois venu détruire la loi ou les prophètes. Je ne suis pas venu pour détruire, mais pour accomplir.
18 For amen I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot, or one tittle shall not pass of the law, till all be fulfilled.
Car, en vérité, je vous le dis, tant que le ciel et la terre ne passeront pas, il ne disparaîtra pas de la loi une seule petite lettre ou un seul petit trait de plume, jusqu'à ce que tout soit accompli.
19 He therefore that shall break one of these least commandments, and shall so teach men, shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven. But he that shall do and teach, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
C'est pourquoi, quiconque transgressera l'un de ces plus petits commandements et enseignera à d'autres à le faire, sera appelé le plus petit dans le Royaume des Cieux; mais quiconque les mettra en pratique et les enseignera sera appelé grand dans le Royaume des Cieux.
20 For I tell you, that unless your justice abound more than that of the scribes and Pharisees, you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.
Car je vous le dis, si votre justice ne dépasse pas celle des scribes et des pharisiens, vous n'entrerez pas dans le Royaume des cieux.
21 You have heard that it was said to them of old: Thou shalt not kill. And whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment.
Vous avez appris qu'il a été dit aux anciens: « Tu ne commettras pas de meurtre", et « Celui qui commet un meurtre sera exposé au jugement ».
22 But I say to you, that whosoever is angry with his brother, shall be in danger of the judgment. And whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council. And whosoever shall say, Thou Fool, shall be in danger of hell fire. (Geenna g1067)
Mais moi, je vous dis que quiconque se met en colère contre son frère sans raison sera en danger de jugement. Celui qui dit à son frère: « Raca!" risque le conseil. Celui qui dira: « Tu es fou », risquera le feu de la géhenne. (Geenna g1067)
23 If therefore thou offer thy gift at the altar, and there thou remember that thy brother hath any thing against thee;
« Si donc tu présentes ton offrande à l'autel, et que là tu te souviennes que ton frère a quelque chose contre toi,
24 Leave there thy offering before the altar, and go first to be reconciled to thy brother: and then coming thou shalt offer thy gift.
laisse là ton offrande devant l'autel, et va-t'en. Réconcilie-toi d'abord avec ton frère, puis viens offrir ton offrande.
25 Be at agreement with thy adversary betimes, whilst thou art in the way with him: lest perhaps the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.
Mets-toi rapidement d'accord avec ton adversaire pendant que tu es avec lui en chemin, de peur que le procureur ne te livre au juge, que le juge ne te livre à l'officier, et que tu ne sois jeté en prison.
26 Amen I say to thee, thou shalt not go out from thence till thou repay the last farthing.
En tout cas, je te le dis, tu ne sortiras pas de là avant d'avoir payé le dernier sou.
27 You have heard that it was said to them of old: Thou shalt not commit adultery.
Vous avez appris qu'il a été dit: " Tu ne commettras pas d'adultère »;
28 But I say to you, that whosoever shall look on a woman to lust after her, hath already committed adultery with her in his heart.
mais moi, je vous dis que quiconque regarde une femme pour la convoiter a déjà commis un adultère avec elle dans son cœur.
29 And if thy right eye scandalize thee, pluck it out and cast it from thee. For it is expedient for thee that one of thy members should perish, rather than that thy whole body be cast into hell. (Geenna g1067)
Si ton œil droit te fait trébucher, arrache-le et jette-le loin de toi. Car il est plus avantageux pour toi qu'un seul de tes membres périsse que ton corps tout entier soit jeté dans la géhenne. (Geenna g1067)
30 And if thy right hand scandalize thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is expedient for thee that one of thy members should perish, rather than that thy whole body be cast into hell. (Geenna g1067)
Si ta main droite te fait trébucher, coupe-la et jette-la loin de toi. Car il est plus avantageux pour toi que l'un de tes membres périsse, que tout ton corps soit jeté dans la géhenne. (Geenna g1067)
31 And it hath been said, whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a bill of divorce.
Il a aussi été dit: « Si quelqu'un répudie sa femme, qu'il lui donne une lettre de divorce ».
32 But I say to you, that whosoever shall put away his wife, excepting for the cause of fornication, maketh her to commit adultery: and he that shall marry her that is put away, committeth adultery.
Mais moi, je vous dis que si quelqu'un répudie sa femme, sauf pour cause d'immoralité sexuelle, il la rend adultère, et que si quelqu'un l'épouse alors qu'elle est répudiée, il commet un adultère.
33 Again you have heard that it was said to them of old, Thou shalt not forswear thyself: but thou shalt perform thy oaths to the Lord.
« Vous avez encore entendu qu'il a été dit aux anciens: Tu ne feras pas de faux serments, mais tu accompliras tes serments envers le Seigneur.
34 But I say to you not to swear at all, neither by heaven, for it is the throne of God:
Mais moi, je vous dis de ne pas jurer du tout: ni par le ciel, car c'est le trône de Dieu;
35 Nor by the earth, for it is his footstool: nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great king:
ni par la terre, car c'est le marchepied de ses pieds; ni par Jérusalem, car c'est la ville du grand Roi.
36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.
Tu ne jureras pas non plus par ta tête, car on ne peut rendre un cheveu blanc ou noir.
37 But let your speech be yea, yea: no, no: and that which is over and above these, is of evil.
Mais que ton « oui » soit « oui » et que ton « non » soit « non ». Tout ce qui est plus que cela appartient au malin.
38 You have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.
Vous avez appris qu'il a été dit: 'Œil pour œil, dent pour dent'.
39 But I say to you not to resist evil: but if one strike thee on thy right cheek, turn to him also the other:
Mais moi, je vous dis de ne pas résister à celui qui fait le mal; mais si quelqu'un te frappe sur la joue droite, tends-lui aussi l'autre.
40 And if a man will contend with thee in judgment, and take away thy coat, let go thy cloak also unto him.
Si quelqu'un te poursuit pour te prendre ton manteau, laisse-lui aussi ton manteau.
41 And whosoever will force thee one mile, go with him other two,
Si quelqu'un te force à faire un kilomètre, fais-en deux avec lui.
42 Give to him that asketh of thee and from him that would borrow of thee turn not away.
Donne à celui qui te demande, et ne repousse pas celui qui veut t'emprunter.
43 You have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and hate thy enemy.
Vous avez appris qu'il a été dit: « Tu aimeras ton prochain et tu haïras ton ennemi ».
44 But I say to you, Love your enemies: do good to them that hate you: and pray for them that persecute and calumniate you:
Mais moi, je vous dis: aimez vos ennemis, bénissez ceux qui vous maudissent, faites du bien à ceux qui vous haïssent, et priez pour ceux qui vous maltraitent et vous persécutent,
45 That you may be the children of your Father who is in heaven, who maketh his sun to rise upon the good, and bad, and raineth upon the just and the unjust.
afin que vous soyez les enfants de votre Père qui est dans les cieux. Car il fait lever son soleil sur les méchants et sur les bons, et il fait tomber la pluie sur les justes et sur les injustes.
46 For if you love them that love you, what reward shall you have? do not even the publicans this?
Car si vous aimez ceux qui vous aiment, quelle récompense aurez-vous? Les collecteurs d'impôts eux-mêmes ne font-ils pas de même?
47 And if you salute your brethren only, what do you more? do not also the heathens this?
Si vous vous contentez de saluer vos amis, que faites-vous de plus que les autres? Les collecteurs d'impôts n' en font-ils pas autant?
48 Be you therefore perfect, as also your heavenly Father is perfect.
C'est pourquoi vous devez être parfaits, comme votre Père qui est dans les cieux est parfait.
