Judges 6
1 And the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the Lord: and he delivered them into the hand of Madian seven years.
ইস্রায়েলীরা সদাপ্রভুর দৃষ্টিতে যা মন্দ তাই করল, এবং সাত বছরের জন্য তিনি তাদের মিদিয়নীয়দের হাতে সমর্পণ করলেন।
2 And they were grievously oppressed by them. And they made themselves dens and eaves in the mountains, and strong holds to resist.
মিদিয়নীয়রা এত নিষ্ঠুর ছিল যে ইস্রায়েলীরা নিজেদের জন্য পর্বত-গহ্বরে, গুহায় ও দুর্গম স্থানে আশ্রয়স্থল তৈরি করল।
3 And when Israel had sown, Madian and Amalec, and the rest of the eastern nations came up:
যখনই ইস্রায়েলীরা শষ্য-বীজ বপন করত, মিদিয়নীয়, অমালেকীয় এবং প্রাচ্যদেশীয় অন্যান্য জাতিরা এসে দেশ আক্রমণ করত।
4 And pitching their tents among them, wasted all things as they were in the blade even to the entrance of Gaza: and they left nothing at all in Israel for sustenance of life, nor sheep, nor oxen, nor asses.
তারা দেশে শিবির স্থাপন করত এবং গাজা পর্যন্ত বিস্তৃত ক্ষেতের ফসল নষ্ট করে দিত। তারা ইস্রায়েলীদের জন্য কোনো জীবিত প্রাণী অবশিষ্ট রাখত না, তা সে মেষ, গবাদি পশুপাল বা গাধা, যাই হোক না কেন।
5 For they and all their flocks came with their tents, and like locusts filled all places, an innumerable multitude of men, and of camels, wasting whatsoever they touched.
পঙ্গপালের ঝাঁকের মতো তারা তাদের পশুপাল ও তাঁবু সঙ্গে নিয়ে আসত। তাদের সংখ্যা বা তাদের উটদের সংখ্যা গোনা অসম্ভব হত; তারা দেশ ছারখার করে দেওয়ার জন্যই সেখানে আক্রমণ চালাত।
6 And Israel was humbled exceedingly in the sight of Madian.
মিদিয়ন ইস্রায়েলীদের এমনভাবে নিঃস্ব করে তুলেছিল যে তারা সাহায্য লাভের আশায় সদাপ্রভুর কাছে কেঁদে উঠল।
7 And he cried to the Lord desiring help against the Madianites.
মিদিয়নের কারণে ইস্রায়েলীরা যখন সদাপ্রভুর কাছে কেঁদে উঠল,
8 And he sent unto them a prophet, and he spoke: Thus saith the Lord the God of Israel: I made you to come up out of Egypt, and brought you out of the house of bondage,
তখন তিনি তাদের কাছে একজন ভাববাদীকে পাঠিয়ে দিলেন, যিনি বললেন, “ইস্রায়েলের ঈশ্বর সদাপ্রভু একথাই বলেন: আমি মিশর থেকে, ক্রীতদাসত্বের দেশ থেকে তোমাদের বের করে এনেছি।
9 And delivered you out of the hands of the Egyptians, and of all the enemies that afflicted you: and I cast them out at your coming in, and gave you their land.
মিশরীয়দের হাত থেকে আমি তোমাদের উদ্ধার করেছি। আর আমি তোমাদের সব উপদ্রবকারীর হাত থেকে তোমাদের মুক্ত করেছি; তোমাদের সামনে থেকে আমি তাদের বিতাড়িত করেছি ও তাদের দেশটি তোমাদের দিয়েছি।
10 And I said: I am the Lord your God, fear not the gods of the Amorrhites, in whose land you dwell. And you would not hear my voice.
আমি তোমাদের বলেছি, ‘আমি তোমাদের ঈশ্বর সদাপ্রভু; যাদের দেশে তোমরা বসবাস করছ, সেই ইমোরীয়দের দেবতাদের আরাধনা তোমরা কোরো না।’ কিন্তু তোমরা আমার কথা শোনোনি।”
11 And an angel of the Lord came, and sat under an oak, that was in Ephra, and belonged to Joas the father of the family of Ezri. And when Gedeon his son was threshing and cleansing wheat by the winepress, to flee from Madian,
সদাপ্রভুর দূত অবীয়েষ্রীয় যোয়াশের অধিকারভুক্ত অফ্রায় এক ওক গাছের তলায় এসে বসলেন। যোয়াশের ছেলে গিদিয়োন তখন সেখানে মিদিয়নীয়দের দৃষ্টির আড়ালে সরিয়ে রাখার জন্য এক আঙুর মাড়াই-কলে দাঁড়িয়ে গম মাড়াই করছিলেন।
12 The angel of the Lord appeared to him, and said: The Lord is with thee, O most valiant of men.
সদাপ্রভুর দূত গিদিয়োনের কাছে আবির্ভূত হয়ে বললেন, “হে বলবান যোদ্ধা, সদাপ্রভু তোমার সহবর্তী।”
13 And Gedeon said to him: I beseech thee, my lord, if the Lord be with us, why have these evils fallen upon us? Where are his miracles, which our fathers have told us of, saying: The Lord brought us Out of Egypt? but now the Lord hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the bands of Madian.
“হে আমার প্রভু, আমাকে ক্ষমা করুন,” গিদিয়োন উত্তর দিলেন, “কিন্তু সদাপ্রভু যদি আমাদের সহবর্তী হন, তবে আমাদের প্রতি কেন এসব কিছু ঘটল? তাঁর সেইসব অলৌকিক কাজকর্ম কোথায় গেল, যেগুলির বিষয়ে আমাদের পূর্বপুরুষরা আমাদের বলে শোনাতেন, ‘সদাপ্রভু কি আমাদের মিশর থেকে বের করে আনেননি?’ কিন্তু এখন সদাপ্রভু আমাদের পরিত্যাগ করেছেন এবং মিদিয়নের হাতে আমাদের সমর্পণ করে দিয়েছেন।”
14 And the Lord looked upon him, and said: Go in this thy strength, and then shalt deliver Israel out of the hand of Madian: know that I have sent thee.
সদাপ্রভু তাঁর দিকে ফিরে বললেন, “তোমার নিজস্ব শক্তিতেই তুমি যাও এবং মিদিয়নের হাত থেকে ইস্রায়েলকে রক্ষা করো। আমিই কি তোমাকে পাঠাচ্ছি না?”
15 He answered and said: I beseech thee, my lord, wherewith shall I deliver Israel? Behold my family is the meanest in Manasses, and I am the least in my father’s house.
“হে আমার প্রভু, আমায় ক্ষমা করুন,” গিদিয়োন উত্তর দিলেন, “আমি কীভাবে ইস্রায়েলকে রক্ষা করব? আমার বংশই মনঃশি গোষ্ঠীর মধ্যে সবচেয়ে দুর্বল, এবং আমার পরিবারে আমিই সবচেয়ে নগণ্য।”
16 And the Lord said to him: I will be with thee: and thou shalt cut off Madian as one man.
সদাপ্রভু উত্তর দিলেন, “আমি তোমার সহবর্তী হব, এবং তুমি মিদিয়নীয়দের সবাইকে আঘাত করবে, একজনকেও জীবিত রাখবে না।”
17 And he said: If I have found grace before thee, give me a sign that it is thou that speakest to me,
গিদিয়োন উত্তর দিলেন, “এখন আমি যদি আপনার দৃষ্টিতে অনুগ্রহ লাভ করেছি, তবে আমাকে এমন এক চিহ্ন দেখান যে সত্যি আপনিই আমার সঙ্গে কথা বলছেন।
18 And depart not hence, till I return to thee, and bring a sacrifice, and offer it to thee. And he answered: I will wait thy coming.
আমি যতক্ষণ না ফিরে আসছি ও আমার নৈবেদ্য এনে আপনার কাছে উৎসর্গ করছি, ততক্ষণ দয়া করে এখান থেকে চলে যাবেন না।” আর সদাপ্রভু বললেন, “তুমি ফিরে না আসা পর্যন্ত আমি অপেক্ষা করব।”
19 So Gedeon went in, and boiled a kid, and made unleavened loaves of a measure of flour: and putting the flesh in a basket, and the broth of the flesh into a pot, he carried all under the oak, and presented to him.
গিদিয়োন তাঁবুর ভিতরে গিয়ে একটি কচি পাঁঠার মাংস রান্না করলেন, এবং এক ঐফা ময়দা দিয়ে খামিরবিহীন রুটি তৈরি করলেন। একটি ডালিতে মাংস ও একটি পাত্রে ঝোল রেখে, তিনি সেগুলি বাইরে এনে ওক গাছের তলায় সেগুলি তাঁর উদ্দেশে উৎসর্গ করলেন।
20 And the angel of the Lord said to him: Take the flesh and the unleavened loaves, and lay them upon that rock, and pour out the broth thereon. And when he had done so,
ঈশ্বরের দূত তাঁকে বললেন, “মাংস ও খামিরবিহীন রুটিগুলি নিয়ে সেগুলি এই পাষাণ-পাথরের উপরে রাখো, এবং ঝোল ঢেলে দাও।” আর গিদিয়োন সেরকমই করলেন।
21 The angel of the Lord put forth the tip of the rod, which he held in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened loaves: and there arose a fire from the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened loaves: and the angel of the Lord vanished out of his sight.
পরে সদাপ্রভুর দূত তাঁর হাতে ধরা লাঠিটির ডগা দিয়ে সেই মাংস ও খামিরবিহীন রুটি স্পর্শ করলেন। পাষাণ-পাথর থেকে আগুন বের হয়ে দাউদাউ করে জ্বলে উঠল এবং সেই মাংস ও রুটি গ্রাস করল। আর সদাপ্রভুর দূত অদৃশ্য হয়ে গেলেন।
22 And Gedeon seeing that it was the angel of the Lord, said: Alas, my Lord God: for I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face.
গিদিয়োন যখন উপলব্ধি করলেন যে উনি সদাপ্রভুর দূত, তখন তিনি চিৎকার করে বললেন, “হায়, সার্বভৌম সদাপ্রভু! আমি যে মুখোমুখি সদাপ্রভুর দূতকে দেখলাম!”
23 And the Lord said to him: Peace be with thee: fear not, thou shalt not die.
কিন্তু সদাপ্রভু তাঁকে বললেন, “শান্তি বজায় রাখো! ভয় পেয়ো না। তুমি মরবে না।”
24 And Gedeon built there an altar to the Lord, and called it the Lord’s peace, until this present day. And when he was yet in Ephra, which is of the family of Ezri,
অতএব গিদিয়োন সদাপ্রভুর উদ্দেশে একটি যজ্ঞবেদি নির্মাণ করলেন এবং সেটির নাম দিলেন “সদাপ্রভু শান্তি।” আজও পর্যন্ত অবীয়েষ্রীয়দের অফ্রায় সেটি দাঁড়িয়ে আছে।
25 That night the Lord said to him: Take a bullock of thy father’s, and another bullock of seven years, and thou shalt destroy the altar of Baal, which is thy father’s: and cut down the grove that is about the altar:
সেরাতেই সদাপ্রভু গিদিয়োনকে বললেন, “তোমার বাবার পশুপাল থেকে সেই দ্বিতীয় বলদটি নাও, যেটির বয়স সাত বছর। বায়ালদেবের উদ্দেশে তোমার বাবার দ্বারা নির্মিত বেদিটি ভেঙে ফেলো এবং সেটির পাশে অবস্থিত আশেরা-খুঁটিটি কেটে নামাও।
26 And thou shalt build an altar to the Lord thy God in the top of this rock, whereupon thou didst lay the sacrifice before: and thou shalt take the second bullock, and shalt offer a holocaust upon a pile of the wood, which thou shalt cut down out of the grove.
তারপর পাহাড়-চূড়ায় তোমার ঈশ্বর সদাপ্রভুর উদ্দেশে সঠিক ধরনের এক যজ্ঞবেদি নির্মাণ করো। কেটে ফেলা আশেরা-খুঁটির কাঠ ব্যবহার করে, দ্বিতীয় বলদটিকে এক হোমবলিরূপে উৎসর্গ করো।”
27 Then Gedeon taking ten men of his servants, did as the Lord had commanded him. But fearing his father’s house, and the men of that city, he would not do it by day, but did all by night.
গিদিয়োন তাঁর দাসদের মধ্যে থেকে দশজনকে সঙ্গে নিলেন এবং সদাপ্রভুর বলা কথা অনুসারে সবকিছু করলেন। কিন্তু পরিবারকে এবং নগরবাসী অন্যান্য লোকদের ভয় করার কারণে তিনি সে কাজটি দিনে না করে রাতে করলেন।
28 And when the men of that town were risen in the morning, they saw the altar of Baal destroyed, and the grove cut down, and the second bullock laid upon the altar, which then was built.
সকালবেলায় নগরবাসীরা উঠে দেখল যে বায়ালদেবের বেদিটি ভেঙে ফেলা হয়েছে ও সেটির পাশে অবস্থিত আশেরা-খুঁটিটিও কেটে নামানো হয়েছে এবং সেই নবনির্মিত বেদির উপর দ্বিতীয় বলদটি উৎসর্গ করা হয়েছে!
29 And they said one to another: Who hath done this? And when they inquired for the author of the fact, it was said: Gedeon the son of Joas did all this.
তারা পরস্পরকে জিজ্ঞাসা করল, “কে এ কাজ করেছে?” ভালো করে যখন তারা তদন্ত করল, তখন তাদের বলা হল, “যোয়াশের ছেলে গিদিয়োন এ কাজ করেছে।”
30 And they said to Joas: Bring out thy son hither, that he may die: because he hath destroyed the altar of Baal, and hath cut down his grove.
নগরবাসীরা যোয়াশের কাছে দাবি জানাল, “তোমার ছেলেকে বের করে আনো। তাকে মরতে হবে, কারণ সে বায়ালদেবের বেদি ভেঙে ফেলেছে এবং সেটির পাশে অবস্থিত আশেরা-খুঁটিটিও কেটে নামিয়েছে।”
31 He answered them: Are you the avengers of Baal, that you fight for him? he that is his adversary, let him die before tomorrow light appear: if he be a god, let him revenge himself on him that hath cast down his altar.
কিন্তু যোয়াশ তাঁর চারপাশে দাঁড়িয়ে থাকা বৈরিতাবিশিষ্ট জনতাকে বললেন, “তোমরা কি বায়ালদেবের পক্ষে দাঁড়িয়ে ওকালতি করতে এসেছ? তোমরা কি তাকে রক্ষা করার চেষ্টা করছ? যে কেউ বায়ালদেবের হয়ে লড়াই করবে, কাল সকালে তাদের মেরে ফেলা হবে! বায়াল যদি সত্যিই দেবতা হয়, তবে কেউ তার বেদি ভেঙে ফেললে সে নিজেই নিজেকে রক্ষা করতে পারবে।”
32 From that day Gedeon was called Jerobaal, because Joss had said: Let Baal revenge himself on him that hath cast down his altar.
তাই যেহেতু গিদিয়োন বায়ালদেবের বেদি ভেঙে ফেললেন, তাই সেদিন তারা এই বলে তাঁর নাম দিল “যিরুব্বায়াল,” যে “বায়ালদেবই তার সঙ্গে বিবাদ করুন।”
33 Now all Madian, and Amalec, and the eastern people were gathered together, and passing over the Jordan, camped in the valley of Jezrael.
ইত্যবসরে মিদিয়নীয়, অমালেকীয় এবং অন্যান্য প্রাচ্যদেশীয় লোকেরা সবাই সৈন্যবাহিনী একত্রিত করল এবং জর্ডন নদী পার হয়ে যিষ্রিয়েলের উপত্যকায় শিবির স্থাপন করল।
34 But the spirit of the Lord came upon Gedeon, and be sounded the trumpet and called together the house of Abiezer, to follow him.
তখন সদাপ্রভুর আত্মা গিদিয়োনের উপর নেমে এলেন, এবং শিঙা বাজিয়ে তিনি অবীয়েষ্রীয়দের তাঁর অনুগামী হওয়ার জন্য ডাক দিলেন।
35 And he sent messengers into all Manasses, and they also followed him: and other messengers into Aser and Zabulon and Nephtali, and they came to meet him.
মনঃশি গোষ্ঠীভুক্ত এলাকার সর্বত্র তিনি দূত পাঠালেন, অস্ত্রশস্ত্রে সুসজ্জিত হওয়ার আহ্বান জানালেন, এবং আশের, সবূলূন ও নপ্তালি গোষ্ঠীভুক্ত লোকদের কাছেও পাঠালেন, আর তারাও তাঁর সঙ্গে দেখা করতে গেল।
36 And Gedeon said to God: If thou wilt save Israel by my hand, as thou hast said,
গিদিয়োন ঈশ্বরকে বললেন, “তোমার প্রতিজ্ঞানুসারে, তুমি যদি আমার হাত দিয়েই ইস্রায়েলকে রক্ষা করতে চাও—
37 I will put this fleece of wool on the floor: if there be dew on the fleece only, and it be dry on all the ground beside, I, shall know that by my hand, as thou hast said, thou wilt deliver Israel.
তবে দেখো, আমি খামারে পশমের একটি টুকরো রাখব। সেই পশমের টুকরোতেই যদি শিশির পড়ে এবং সমগ্র মাঠ শুকনো থাকে, তবেই আমি বুঝব যে আমার হাত দিয়ে তুমি ইস্রায়েলকে রক্ষা করবে, যেমনটি কি না তুমি বলেছিলে।”
38 And it was so. And rising before day wringing the fleece, he filled a vessel with the dew.
আর ঠিক তাই ঘটল। পরদিন ভোরবেলায় গিদিয়োন ঘুম থেকে উঠলেন; তিনি সেই পশমের টুকরোটি নিংড়ালেন এবং নিংড়ে সেই শিশিরটুকু বের করলেন—তাতে একবাটি জল হল।
39 And he said again to God: let not thy wrath be kindled against me if I try once more, seeking a sign in the fleece. I pray that the fleece only may be dry, and all the ground wet with dew.
তখন গিদিয়োন ঈশ্বরকে বললেন, “আমার উপর ক্রুদ্ধ হোয়ো না। আমাকে আর একটিমাত্র অনুরোধ জানাতে দাও। পশম নিয়ে আমাকে আর একটি পরীক্ষা করার অনুমতি দাও, কিন্তু এবার পশমের টুকরোটিকে শুকনো করে রাখো এবং মাঠে যেন শিশির ছড়িয়ে থাকে।”
40 And God did that night as he had requested: and it was dry on the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.
সেরাতে ঈশ্বর সেরকমই করলেন। শুধু পশমের টুকরোটি শুকনো ছিল; সমগ্র মাঠ শিশিরে ছেয়ে ছিল।
