Jeremiah 42
1 Then all the captains of the warriors, and Johanan the son of Caree, and Jezonias the son of Osaias, and the rest of the people from the least to the greatest came near:
Alors tous les chefs de troupes, ainsi que Johanan, fils de Carée, Jezonias, fils d'Osaïas, et tout le peuple, petits et grands, s'approchèrent
2 And they said to Jeremias the prophet: Let our supplication fall before thee: and pray thou for us to the Lord thy God for all this remnant, for we are left but a few of many, as thy eyes do behold us.
et dirent à Jérémie, le prophète: " Que notre supplication arrive devant toi; intercède pour nous auprès de Yahweh, ton Dieu, pour tout ce reste de Juda; car, de beaucoup que nous étions, nous sommes réduits à un petit nombre, comme tes yeux nous voient.
3 And let the Lord thy God shew us the way by which we may walk, and the thing that we must do.
Que Yahweh, ton Dieu, nous indique le chemin que nous devons suivre, et ce que nous avons à faire. "
4 And Jeremias the prophet said to them: I have heard you: behold I will pray to the Lord your God according to your words: and whatsoever thing he shall answer me, I will declare it to you: and I will hide nothing from you.
Jérémie, le prophète, leur répondit: " J'ai entendu; voici que je vais prier Yahweh, votre Dieu, selon vos paroles, et tout ce que Yahweh vous répondra, je vous le ferai connaître, sans rien vous cacher. "
5 And they said to Jeremias: The Lord be witness between us of truth and faithfulness, if we do not according to every thing for which the Lord thy God shall send thee to us.
Ils dirent à Jérémie: " Que Yahweh soit un témoin véridique et fidèle contre nous, si nous n'agissons pas en tout selon la parole que Yahweh, ton Dieu, t'aura envoyé nous communiquer.
6 Whether it be good or evil, we will obey the voice of the Lord our God, to whom me send thee: that it may be well with us when we shall hearken to the voice of the Lord our God.
Que ce soit du bien ou du mal, nous obéirons à la voix de Yahweh, notre Dieu, vers qui nous t'envoyons, afin qu'il nous arrive du bien, en obéissant à la voix de Yahweh, notre Dieu. "
7 Now after ten days, the word of the Lord came to Jeremias.
Et au bout de dix jours, la parole de Yahweh fut adressée à Jérémie,
8 And he called Johanan the son of Caree, and all the captains of the fighting men that were with him, and all the people from the least to the greatest.
Et il appela Johanan, fils de Carée, tous les chefs des troupes qui étaient avec lui, et tout le peuple, petits et grands;
9 And he said to them: Thus saith the Lord the God of Israel, to whom you sent me, to present your supplications before him:
et il leur dit: Ainsi, parle Yahweh, Dieu d'Israël, vers qui vous m'avez envoyé pour présenter devant lui votre supplication:
10 If you will be quiet and remain in this land, I will build you up, and not pull you down: I will plane you, and not pluck you up: for now I am appeased for the evil that I have done to you.
Si vous continuez à demeurer dans ce pays, je vous établirai et ne vous détruirai point, je vous planterai et ne vous arracherai point; car je me repens du mal que je vous ai fait.
11 Fear not because of the king of Babylon, of whom you are greatly afraid: fear him not, saith the Lord: for I am with you, to save you, and to deliver you from his hand.
Ne craignez pas le roi de Babylone, dont vous avez peur; ne le craignez point, — oracle de Yahweh, — car je suis avec vous pour vous sauver et vous délivrer de sa main.
12 And I will shew mercies to you, and will take pity on you, and will cause you to dwell in your own land.
Je vous ferai obtenir compassion, et il aura compassion de vous, et il vous fera retourner dans votre pays.
13 But if you say: We will not dwell in this land, neither will we hearken to the voice of the Lord our God,
Que si vous dites: Nous ne demeurerons pas dans ce pays, de telle sorte que vous n'obéissiez pas à la voix de Yahweh, votre Dieu;
14 Saying: No, but we will go into the land of Egypt: where we shall see no war, nor hear the sound of the trumpet, nor suffer hunger: and there we will dwell.
si vous dites: Non! mais nous irons au pays d'Egypte, où nous ne verrons point de guerre, où nous n'entendrons pas le son de la trompette, où nous ne sentirons pas la faim, et c'est là que nous habiterons, —
15 For this now hear the word of the Lord, ye remnant of Juda: Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: If you set your faces to go into Egypt, and enter in to dwell there:
alors entendez la parole de Yahweh, vous, les restes de Juda: Ainsi parle Yahweh des armées, Dieu d'Israël: Si vous tournez vos regards vers l'Egypte pour y aller, et que vous y entriez pour y habiter,
16 The sword which you fear, shall overtake you there in the land of Egypt: and the famine, whereof you are afraid, shall cleave to you in Egypt, and there you shall die.
l'épée que vous craignez vous atteindra là, au pays d'Egypte, et la famine que vous redoutez s'attachera à vous là, en Egypte; et là vous mourrez.
17 And all the men that set their faces to go into Egypt, to dwell there, shall die by the sword, and by famine, and by pestilence: none of them shall remain, nor escape from the face of the evil that I will bring upon them.
Tous ceux qui auront tourné leurs regards vers l'Egypte pour y aller et pour y habiter mourront par l'épée, par la famine et la peste, et il n'y en aura point parmi eux qui survive et qui échappe au mal que je ferai venir sur eux.
18 For thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: As my anger and my indignation hath been kindled against the inhabitants of Jerusalem: so shall my indignation be kindled against you, when you shall enter into Egypt, and you shall be an execration, and an astonishment, and a curse, and a reproach: and you shall see this place no more.
Car ainsi parle Yahweh des armées, Dieu d'Israël: Comme ma colère et ma fureur ont fondu sur les habitants de Jérusalem, ainsi ma fureur fondra sur vous quand vous serez entrés en Egypte; vous serez un objet d'exécration, de stupéfaction, de malédiction et d'outrages, et vous ne reverrez plus ce lieu-ci.
19 This is the word of the Lord concerning you, O ye remnant of Juda: Go ye not into Egypt: know certainly that I have adjured you this day.
Restes de Juda, Yahweh vous dit: N'entrez point en Egypte; sachez bien que je vous avertis solennellement aujourd'hui.
20 For you have deceived your own souls: for you sent me to the Lord our God, saying: Pray for us to the Lord our God, and according to all that the Lord our God shall say to thee, so declare unto us, and we will do it.
Car vous vous abusiez vous-mêmes, lorsque vous m'avez envoyé vers Yahweh, notre Dieu, en disant: Intercède pour nous auprès de Yahweh, notre Dieu, et tout ce que Yahweh, notre Dieu, dira, déclare-le-nous, et nous le ferons.
21 And now I have declared it to you this day, and; you have not obeyed the voice of the Lord your God, with regard to all the things for which he hath sent me to you.
Je vous l'ai déclaré aujourd'hui; mais vous n'avez point écouté la voix de Yahweh, votre Dieu, ni rien de ce qu'il m'a envoyé vous communiquer.
22 Now therefore know certainly that you shall die by the sword, and by famine, and by pestilence in the place to which you desire to go to dwell there.
Sachez donc bien maintenant que vous mourrez par l'épée, par la famine et par la peste, au lieu où il vous a plu d'aller pour y habiter. "
