< Genesis 17 >

1 And after he began to be ninety and nine years old, the Lord appeared to him: and said unto him: I am the Almighty God: walk before me, and be perfect.
And it came to pass that, when Abram was ninety and nine years old, Yahweh appeared unto Abram, and said unto him, I, am GOD Almighty, —Walk, thou before me and become thou blameless:
2 And I will make my covenant between me and thee: and I will multiply thee exceedingly.
That I may set my covenant betwixt me and thee, And may multiply thee, exceedingly.
3 Abram fell flat on his face.
And Abram fell on his face, —and God spake with him, saying:
4 And God said to him: I AM, and my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations.
As for me, lo! my covenant is with thee, —So shalt thou become—father of a multitude of nations;
5 Neither shall thy name be called any more Abram: but thou shalt be called Abraham: because I have made thee a father of many nations.
And thy name shall no more be called Abram, —but thy name shall become Abraham, for father of a multitude of nations, have I appointed thee;
6 And I will make thee increase, exceedingly, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee.
And I will make thee fruitful, exceedingly, and grant thee to be nations, —Yea kings, out of thee, shall come forth;
7 And I will establish my covenant between me and thee, and between thy seed after thee in their generations, by a perpetual covenant: to be a God to thee, and to thy seed after thee.
And I will confirm my covenant betwixt me and thee and thy seed after thee to their generations for an age-abiding covenant, —to become to thee a God, and to thy seed after thee;
8 And I will give to thee, and to thy seed, the land of thy sojournment, all the land of Chanaan for a perpetual possession, and I will be their God.
And I will give to thee and to thy seed after thee the land of thy sojournings—all the land of Canaan, for an age-abiding possession—And I will be to them a God.
9 Again God said to Abraham: And thou therefore shalt keep my covenant, and thy seed after thee in their generations.
And God said unto Abraham, But, as for thee, my covenant, must thou keep, thou and thy seed after thee, to their generations: —
10 This is my covenant which you shall observe, between me and you, and thy seed after thee: All the male kind of you shall be circumcised:
This, is my covenant which ye shall keep, betwixt me and you, and thy seed after thee, —To circumcise to you every male:
11 And you shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin, that it may be for a sign of the covenant between me and you.
So shall ye be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskin, —So shall it become a sign of a covenant, betwixt me and you.
12 An infant of eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations: he that is born in the house, as well as the bought servant shall be circumcised, and whosoever is not of your stock:
And he that is eight days old, shall be circumcised to you every male to your generations, —he that is born of the house, and he that is bought with silver of any son of a stranger, who is, not of thy seed,
13 And my covenant shall be in your flesh for a perpetual covenant.
He must surely be circumcised, born of thy house or bought with thy silver, —So shall my covenant be in your flesh for an age-abiding covenant.
14 The male, whose flesh of his foreskin shall not be circumcised, that soul shall be destroyed out of his people: because he hath broken my covenant.
But, as for the uncircumcised male who shall not be circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, —that person shall be cut off from among his people, —my covenant, hath he made void.
15 God said also to Abraham: Sarai thy wife thou shalt not call Sarai, but Sara.
And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, —but, Sarah, is her name;
16 And I will bless her, and of her I will give thee a son, whom I will bless, and he shall become nations, and kings of people shall spring from him.
and I will bless her, yea moreover will give—from her—to thee, a son, —And I will bless her, and she shall become nations. Kings of peoples, from her, shall arise.
17 Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, saying in his heart: Shall a son, thinkest thou, be born to him that is a hundred years old? and shall Sara that is ninety years old bring forth?
And Abraham fell on his face and laughed, —and said in his heart To one a hundred years old, shall a child be born? And shall even Sarah, who is ninety years old, give birth?
18 And he said to God: O that Ismael may live before thee.
And Abraham said unto God, —Oh that, Ishmael, might live before thee!
19 And God said to Abraham: Sara thy wife shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name Isaac, and I will establish my covenant with him for a perpetual covenant, and with his seed after him.
And God said—Truly, Sarah thy wife, is about to bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name, Isaac, —and I will establish my covenant with him as an age-abiding covenant, to his seed after him.
20 And as for Ismael I have also heard thee. Behold, I will bless him, and increase, and multiply him exceedingly: he shall beget twelve chiefs, and I will make him a great nation.
Yet as for Ishmael, I have heard thee; lo! I have blessed him and will make him fruitful, and multiply him, exceedingly, —twelve princes, shall he beget, and I will grant him to be a great nation;
21 But my covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sara shall bring forth to thee at this time in the next year.
But my covenant, will I establish with Isaac, —whom Sarah shall bear, to thee, by this set time, in the next year.
22 And when he had left off speaking with him, God went up from Abraham.
And he left off speaking with him, —and God went up from Abraham.
23 And Abraham took Ismael his son, and all that were born in his house: and all whom he had bought, every male among the men of his house: and he circumcised the flesh of their foreskin forthwith the very same day, as God had commanded him.
So Abraham took Ishmael his son and all born of his house and all bought with his silver—every male among the men of the house of Abraham, —and circumcised the flesh of their foreskin on this selfsame day, according to that which God had spoken with him.
24 Abraham was ninety and nine years old, when he circumcised the flesh of his foreskin.
Now Abraham, was ninety-nine years old, —when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.
25 And Ismael his son was full thirteen years old at the time of his circumcision.
And Ishmael, his son, was thirteen years old, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.
26 The selfsame day was Abraham circumcised and Ismael his son.
On this selfsame day, was Abraham circumcised, —and Ishmael his son;
27 And all the men of his house, as well they that were born in his house, as the bought servants and strangers were circumcised with him.
and, all the men of his house, born of his house, and bought with silver from the son of a stranger, were circumcised with him.
