Galatians 3

1 O senseless Galatians, who hath bewitched you that you should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been set forth, crucified among you?

Galates insensés, qui vous a ensorcelés pour que vous n'obéissiez pas à la vérité, et sous les yeux desquels Jésus-Christ a été ouvertement présenté au milieu de vous comme crucifié?

2 This only would I learn of you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?

Je veux apprendre ceci de vous: Avez-vous reçu l'Esprit par les œuvres de la loi, ou par l'audition de la foi?

3 Are you so foolish, that, whereas you began in the Spirit, you would now be made perfect by the flesh?

Êtes-vous si insensés? Après avoir commencé dans l'Esprit, êtes-vous maintenant achevés dans la chair?

4 Have you suffered so great things in vain? If it be yet in vain.

Avez-vous souffert tant de choses en vain, si c'est en vain?

5 He therefore who giveth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you; doth he do it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of the faith?

Celui donc qui vous fournit l'Esprit et qui fait des miracles au milieu de vous, le fait-il par les œuvres de la loi, ou par l'audition de la foi?

6 As it is written: Abraham believed God, and it was reputed to him unto justice.

De même, Abraham « crut à Dieu, et cela lui fut compté pour justice ».

7 Know ye therefore, that they who are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.

Sachez donc que ceux qui ont la foi sont enfants d'Abraham.

8 And the scripture, foreseeing, that God justifieth the Gentiles by faith, told unto Abraham before: In thee shall all nations be blessed.

L'Écriture, prévoyant que Dieu justifierait les païens par la foi, a annoncé d'avance la Bonne Nouvelle à Abraham, en disant: « En toi toutes les nations seront bénies. »

9 Therefore they that are of faith, shall be blessed with faithful Abraham.

Ainsi donc, ceux qui ont la foi sont bénis avec le fidèle Abraham.

10 For as many as are of the works of the law, are under a curse. For it is written: Cursed is every one, that abideth not in all things, which are written in the book of the law to do them.

Car tous ceux qui pratiquent les œuvres de la loi sont sous la malédiction. Car il est écrit: « Maudit est quiconque ne met pas en pratique tout ce qui est écrit dans le livre de la loi. »

11 But that in the law no man is justified with God, it is manifest: because the just man liveth by faith.

Or, il est évident que nul n'est justifié devant Dieu par la loi, car il est écrit: « Le juste vivra par la foi. »

12 But the law is not of faith: but, He that doth those things, shall live in them.

La loi n'est pas de la foi, mais: « L'homme qui les met en pratique vivra par elles. »

13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written: Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:

Le Christ nous a rachetés de la malédiction de la loi, étant devenu malédiction pour nous. Car il est écrit: « Maudit est quiconque est pendu à un arbre »,

14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Christ Jesus: that we may receive the promise of the Spirit by faith.

afin que la bénédiction d'Abraham vienne sur les païens par Jésus-Christ, pour que nous recevions par la foi la promesse de l'Esprit.

15 Brethren (I speak after the manner of man, ) yet a man’s testament, if it be confirmed, no man despiseth, nor addeth to it.

Frères, en termes humains, bien qu'il ne s'agisse que d'une alliance d'homme, quand elle a été confirmée, personne ne l'annule ni n'y ajoute.

16 To Abraham were the promises made and to his seed. He saith not, And to his seeds, as of many: but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.

Or les promesses ont été faites à Abraham et à sa descendance. Il ne dit pas: « A une descendance", comme à plusieurs, mais comme à un seul: « A ta descendance », qui est le Christ.

17 Now this I say, that the testament which was confirmed by God, the law which was made after four hundred and thirty years, doth not disannul, to make the promise of no effect.

Or je dis ceci: Une alliance confirmée d'avance par Dieu en Christ, la loi, qui est venue quatre cent trente ans après, ne l'annule pas, au point de rendre la promesse sans effet.

18 For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise. But God gave it to Abraham by promise.

Car si l'héritage vient de la loi, il ne vient plus de la promesse; mais Dieu l'a accordé à Abraham par promesse.

19 Why then was the law? It was set because of transgressions, until the seed should come, to whom he made the promise, being ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.

Alors pourquoi la loi existe-t-elle? Elle a été ajoutée à cause des transgressions, jusqu'à ce que vienne la descendance à laquelle la promesse a été faite. Elle a été ordonnée par des anges, par la main d'un médiateur.

20 Now a mediator is not of one: but God is one.

Or, il n'y a pas de médiateur entre les uns et les autres, mais Dieu est unique.

21 Was the law then against the promises of God? God forbid. For if there had been a law given which could give life, verily justice should have been by the law.

La loi est-elle donc contre les promesses de Dieu? Certainement pas! Car s'il avait été donné une loi qui pût faire vivre, très certainement la justice aurait été de la loi.

22 But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise, by the faith of Jesus Christ, might be given to them that believe.

Mais l'Écriture a emprisonné toutes choses sous le péché, afin que la promesse par la foi en Jésus-Christ soit accordée à ceux qui croient.

23 But before the faith came, we were kept under the law shut up, unto that faith which was to be revealed.

Mais avant que la foi ne vienne, nous étions gardés sous la loi, enfermés pour la foi qui devait être révélée ensuite.

24 Wherefore the law was our pedagogue in Christ, that we might be justified by faith.

De sorte que la loi est devenue notre précepteur pour nous amener au Christ, afin que nous soyons justifiés par la foi.

25 But after the faith is come, we are no longer under a pedagogue.

Mais maintenant que la foi est venue, nous ne sommes plus sous un tuteur.

26 For you are all the children of God by faith, in Christ Jesus.

Car vous êtes tous enfants de Dieu, par la foi en Jésus-Christ.

27 For as many of you as have been baptized in Christ, have put on Christ.

Car tous ceux d'entre vous qui ont été baptisés dans le Christ ont revêtu le Christ.

28 There is neither Jew nor Greek: there is neither bond nor free: there is neither male nor female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus.

Il n'y a plus ni Juif ni Grec, il n'y a plus ni esclave ni homme libre, il n'y a plus ni homme ni femme, car vous êtes tous un en Jésus-Christ.

29 And if you be Christ’s, then are you the seed of Abraham, heirs according to the promise.

Si vous appartenez au Christ, vous êtes donc la postérité d'Abraham et les héritiers selon la promesse.
