Ecclesiastes 9
1 All these things have I considered in my heart, that I might carefully understand them: there are just men and wise men, and their works are in the hand of God: and yet man knoweth not whether he be worthy of love, or hatred:
En effet, j'ai appliqué mon cœur à toutes ces choses, et cela pour éclaircir ce fait, que les justes et les sages et leurs travaux sont entre les mains de Dieu, l'homme ne sachant s'il est aimé ou haï: ils sont en face de la question tout entière.
2 But all things are kept uncertain for the time to come, because all things equally happen to the just and to the wicked, to the good and to the evil, to the clean and to the unclean, to him that offereth victims, and to him that despiseth sacrifices. As the good is, so also is the sinner: as the perjured, so he also that sweareth truth.
Tout arrive pareillement à tous; mêmes événements au juste et à l'impie, à l'homme bon et pur et à l'impur, à celui qui sacrifie et à celui qui ne sacrifie pas; il en est de l'homme de bien comme du pécheur, de celui qui jure, comme de celui qui craint de jurer.
3 This is a very great evil among all things that are done under the sun, that the same things happen to all men: whereby also the hearts of the children of men are filled with evil, and with contempt while they live, and afterwards they shall be brought down to hell. (questioned)
C'est ici un mal dans tout ce qui arrive sous le soleil, c'est que tous ont les mêmes destinées: dès lors aussi le cœur des enfants des hommes se remplit de malice, et la folie est dans leur cœur pendant leur vie, et après cela… chez les morts! En effet, qui est excepté?
4 There is no man that liveth always, or that hopeth for this: a living dog is better than a dead lion.
Tous ceux qui vivent, conservent l'espérance; un chien vivant vaut mieux qu'un lion mort.
5 For the living know that they shall die, but the dead know nothing more, neither have they a reward any more: for the memory of them is forgotten.
Car les vivants savent qu'ils mourront; mais les morts ne savent absolument rien, et il n'y a plus de rétribution pour eux, puisque leur mémoire est oubliée.
6 Their love also, and their hatred, and their envy are all perished, neither have they any part in this world, and in the work that is done under the sun.
C'en est fait dès longtemps et de leur amour, et de leur haine, et de leur ambition; et pour l'éternité ils n'entrent plus en part de rien de ce qui se fait sous le soleil.
7 Go then, and eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with gladness: because thy works please God.
Va, mange gaiement ton pain, et bois ton vin dans la joie de ton cœur, car dès longtemps Dieu prend plaisir à ce que tu fais.
8 At all times let thy garments be white, and let not oil depart from thy head.
Porte en tout temps des vêtements blancs, et que sur ta tête jamais l'huile ne manque!
9 Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest, all the days of thy unsteady life, which are given to thee under the sun, all the time of thy vanity: for this is thy portion in life, and in thy labour wherewith thou labourest under the sun.
Jouis de la vie avec la femme que tu aimes, durant tous les jours de ta vie de vanité, qu'il t'a donnés sous le soleil, durant tous les jours de ta vie de vanité! Car c'est ta part dans la vie, et dans le labeur dont tu te fatigues sous le soleil.
10 Whatsoever thy hand is able to do, do it earnestly: for neither work, nor reason, nor wisdom, nor knowledge shall be in hell, whither thou art hastening. (Sheol h7585)
Emploie ta force à faire tout ce que ta main trouvera à faire! Car il n'y a plus ni œuvre, ni prudence, ni science, ni sagesse dans les Enfers où tu vas. (Sheol h7585)
11 I turned me to another thing, and I saw that under the sun, the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the learned, nor favour to the skillful: but time and chance in all.
J'ai encore vu sous le soleil que la course n'est pas pour les agiles, ni la guerre pour les braves, non plus que le pain pour les sages, non plus que les richesses pour les habiles, non plus que la faveur pour ceux qui savent; mais le temps et les événements leur viennent à la traverse à tous.
12 Man knoweth not his own end: but as fishes are taken with the hook, and as birds are caught with the snare, so men are taken in the evil time, when it shall suddenly come upon them.
Car le mortel ignore son heure, ainsi que les poissons qui se prennent au filet meurtrier, et comme les oiseaux qui se prennent dans les lacs: comme eux les enfants des hommes sont enlacés au jour du malheur, quand il fond sur eux tout-à-coup.
13 This wisdom also I have seen under the sun, and it seemed to me to be very great:
Néanmoins j'ai vu de la sagesse sous le soleil, et elle m'apparut grande.
14 A little city, and few men in it: there came against it a great king, and invested it, and built bulwarks round about it, and the siege was perfect.
Il existait une petite ville, où il ne se trouvait qu'un petit nombre d'hommes. Et un grand roi marcha contre elle, et il la cerna et éleva contre elle de grandes redoutes.
15 Now there was found in it a man poor and wise, and he delivered the city by his wisdom, and no man afterward remembered that poor man.
Et il s'y trouvait un homme pauvre qui était sage; et ce fut lui qui par sa sagesse sauva la ville; mais personne ne garda le souvenir de cet homme pauvre.
16 And I said that wisdom is better than strength: how then is the wisdom of the poor man slighted, and his words not heard?
Et je dis: La sagesse vaut mieux que la bravoure, quoique la sagesse du pauvre soit dédaignée, et que ses discours ne soient pas écoutés.
17 The words of the wise are heard in silence, more than the cry of a prince among fools.
Les discours calmes des sages sont plus écoutés que la clameur du souverain qui est du nombre des fous.
18 Better is wisdom, than weapons of war: and he that shall offend in one, shall lose many good things.
La sagesse vaut mieux que des armes de guerre; mais un seul pécheur gâte beaucoup de bien.
