Ecclesiastes 4
1 I turned myself to other things, and I saw the oppressions that are done under the sun, and the tears of the innocent, and they had no comforter; and they were not able to resist their violence, being destitute of help from any.
Je me suis tourné et j'ai vu toutes les oppressions qui se commettent sous le soleil: et voici que les opprimés sont dans les larmes, et personne ne les console! Ils sont en butte à la violence de leurs oppresseurs, et personne ne les console!
2 And I praised the dead rather than the living:
Et j'ai proclamé les morts qui sont déjà morts plus heureux que les vivants qui sont encore vivants,
3 And I judged him happier than them both, that is not yet born, nor hath seen the evils that are done under the sun.
et plus heureux que les uns et les autres celui qui n'est pas encore arrivé à l'existence, qui n'a pas vu les mauvaises actions qui se commettent sous le soleil.
4 Again I considered all the labours of men, and I remarked that their industries are exposed to the envy of their neighhour: so in this also there is vanity, and fruitless care.
J'ai vu que tout travail et que toute habileté dans un ouvrage n'est que jalousie contre un homme de la part de son prochain: cela encore est vanité et poursuite du vent.
5 The fool foldeth his hands together, and eateth his own flesh, saying:
L'insensé se croise les mains, et mange sa propre chair.
6 Better is a handful with rest, than both hands full with labour, and vexation of mind.
Mieux vaut une main pleine de repos, que les deux pleines de labeur et de poursuite du vent.
7 Considering I found also another vanity under the sun:
Je me suis tourné et j'ai vu une autre vanité sous le soleil.
8 There is but one, and he hath not a second, no child, no brother, and yet he ceaseth not to labour, neither are his eyes satisfied with riches, neither doth he reflect, saying: For whom do I labour, and defraud my soul of good things? in this also is vanity, and a grievous vexation.
Tel homme est seul et n'a pas de second, il n'a ni fils ni frère, et pourtant il n'y a pas de fin à tout son travail, et ses yeux ne sont jamais rassasiés de richesses: " Pour qui donc est-ce que je travaille, et que je prive mon âme de jouissance? " Cela encore est vanité, et mauvaise occupation.
9 It is better therefore that two should be together, than one: for they have the advantage of their society:
Mieux vaut vivre à deux que solitaire; il y a pour les deux un bon salaire dans leur travail;
10 If one fall he shall be supported by the other: woe to him that is alone, for when he falleth, he hath none to lift him up.
car s'ils tombent, l'un peut relever son compagnon. Mais malheur à celui qui est seul, et qui tombe sans avoir un second pour le relever!
11 And if two lie together, they shall warm one another: how shall one alone be warmed?
De même, si deux couchent ensemble, ils se réchauffent; mais un homme seul, comment aurait-il chaud!
12 And if a man prevail against one, two shall withstand him: a threefold cord is not easily broken.
Et si quelqu'un maîtrise celui qui est seul, les deux pourront lui résister, et le fil triplé ne rompt pas facilement.
13 Better is a child that is poor and wise, than a king that is old and foolish, who knoweth not to foresee for hereafter.
Mieux vaut un jeune homme pauvre et sage qu'un roi vieux et insensé qui ne sait plus écouter les avis;
14 Because out of prison and chains sometimes a man cometh forth to a kingdom: and another born king is consumed with poverty.
car il sort de prison pour régner, quoiqu'il soit né pauvre dans son royaume.
15 I saw all men living, that walk under the sun with the second young man, who shall rise up in his place.
J'ai vu tous les vivants qui marchent sous le soleil près du jeune homme qui s'élevait à la place du vieux roi.
16 The number of the people, of all that were before him is infinite: and they that shall come afterwards, shall not rejoice in him: but this also is vanity, and vexation of spirit.
Il n'y avait pas de fin à toute cette foule, à tous ceux à la tête desquels il était. Et cependant les descendants ne se réjouiront pas à son sujet. Cela encore est vanité et poursuite du vent.
