Acts 27
1 And when it was determined that he should sail into Italy, and that Paul, with the other prisoners, should be delivered to a centurion, named Julius, of the band Augusta,
Lorsqu'il eut été décidé que nous irions par mer en Italie, on remit Paul et quelques autres prisonniers à un centurion nommé Julius, de la cohorte Augusta.
2 Going on board a ship of Adrumetum, we launched, meaning to sail by the coasts of Asia, Aristarchus, the Macedonian of Thessalonica, continuing with us.
Nous montâmes sur un vaisseau d'Adramytte qui devait longer les côtes de l'Asie, et nous levâmes l'ancre, ayant avec nous Aristarque, Macédonien de Thessalonique.
3 And the day following we came to Sidon. And Julius treating Paul courteously, permitted him to go to his friends, and to take care of himself.
Le jour suivant, nous abordâmes à Sidon; et Julius, qui traitait Paul avec bienveillance, lui permit d'aller chez ses amis et de recevoir leurs soins.
4 And when we had launched from thence, we sailed under Cyprus, because the winds were contrary.
Etant partis de là, nous côtoyâmes l'île de Chypre, parce que les vents étaient contraires.
5 And sailing over the sea of Cilicia, and Pamphylia, we came to Lystra, which is in Lycia:
Après avoir traversé la mer qui baigne la Cilicie et la Pamphylie, nous arrivâmes à Myre, en Lycie.
6 And there the centurion finding a ship of Alexandria sailing into Italy, removed us into it.
Le centurion y ayant trouvé un navire d'Alexandrie qui faisait voile pour l'Italie, il nous y fit monter.
7 And when for many days we had sailed slowly, and were scarce come over against Gnidus, the wind not suffering us, we sailed near Crete by Salmone:
Pendant plusieurs jours nous navigâmes lentement, et ce ne fut pas sans difficulté que nous arrivâmes à la hauteur de Cnide, où le vent ne nous permit pas d'aborder. Nous passâmes au-dessous de l'île de Crète, du côté de Salmoné,
8 And with much ado sailing by it, we came into a certain place, which is called Good-havens, nigh to which was the city of Thalassa.
et longeant la côte avec peine, nous arrivâmes à un lieu nommé Bons-Ports, près duquel était la ville de Laséa.
9 And when much time was spent, and when sailing now was dangerous, because the fast was now past, Paul comforted them,
Un temps assez long s'était écoulé et la navigation devenait dangereuse, car l'époque du jeûne était déjà passée. Paul fit des représentations à l'équipage:
10 Saying to them: Ye men, I see that the voyage beginneth to be with injury and much damage, not only of the lading and ship, but also of our lives.
" Mes amis, leur dit-il, je vois que la navigation ne pourra se faire sans danger et sans de graves dommages, non seulement pour la cargaison et le navire, mais encore pour nos personnes. "
11 But the centurion believed the pilot and the master of the ship, more than those things which were said by Paul.
Mais le centurion avait plus de confiance en ce que disait le pilote et le patron du navire, que dans les paroles de Paul.
12 And whereas it was not a commodious haven to winter in, the greatest part gave counsel to sail thence, if by any means they might reach Phenice to winter there, which is a haven of Crete, looking towards the southwest and northwest.
Et comme le port n'était pas bon pour hiverner, la plupart furent d'avis de reprendre la mer et de tâcher d'atteindre, pour y passer l'hiver, Phénice, port de Crète qui regarde l'Africus et le Corus.
13 And the south wind gently blowing, thinking that they had obtained their purpose, when they had loosed from Asson, they sailed close by Crete.
Un léger vent du sud vint à souffler; se croyant maîtres d'exécuter leur dessin, ils levèrent l'ancre et rasèrent plus près les côtes de Crète.
14 But not long after, there arose against it a tempestuous wind, called Euroaquilo.
Mais bientôt un vent impétueux, nommé Euraquilon, se déchaîna sur l'île.
15 And when the ship was caught, and could not bear up against the wind, giving up the ship to the winds, we were driven.
Le navire fut entraîné, sans pouvoir lutter contre l'ouragan, et nous nous laissâmes aller à la dérive.
16 And running under a certain island, that is called Cauda, we had much work to come by the boat.
Nous passâmes rapidement au-dessous d'une petite île, nommée Cauda, et nous eûmes beaucoup de peine à remonter la chaloupe.
17 Which being taken up, they used helps, undergirding the ship, and fearing lest they should fall into the quicksands, they let down the sail yard, and so were driven.
Quand on l'eut hissée, les matelots, ayant recours à tous les moyens de salut, ceintrèrent le navire, et dans la crainte d'échouer sur la Syrte, ils abattirent la voilure et se laissèrent aller.
18 And we being mightily tossed with the tempest, the next day they lightened the ship.
Comme nous étions violemment battus par la tempête, on jeta le lendemain la cargaison à la mer,
19 And the third day they cast out with their own hands the tackling of the ship.
et le jour suivant nous y lançâmes de nos propres mains les agrès du navire.
20 And when neither sun nor stars appeared for many days, and no small storm lay on us, all hope of our being saved was now taken away.
Pendant plusieurs jours, ni le soleil ni les étoiles ne se montrèrent, et la tempête continuait de sévir avec violence: tout espoir de salut s'était évanoui.
21 And after they had fasted a long time, Paul standing forth in the midst of them, said: You should indeed, O ye men, have hearkened unto me, and not have loosed from Crete, and have gained this harm and loss.
Depuis longtemps personne n'avait mangé. Paul, se levant alors au milieu d'eux, leur dit: " Vous auriez dû m'écouter, mes amis, ne point partir de Crète, et vous épargner ce péril et ce dommage.
22 And now I exhort you to be of good cheer. For there shall be no loss of any man’s life among you, but only of the ship.
Cependant je vous exhorte à prendre courage, car aucun de vous ne perdra la vie; le vaisseau seul sera perdu.
23 For an angel of God, whose I am, and whom I serve, stood by me this night,
Cette nuit même un ange de Dieu à qui j'appartiens et que je sers, m'est apparu,
24 Saying: Fear not, Paul, thou must be brought before Caesar; and behold, God hath given thee all them that sail with thee.
et m'a dit: Paul, ne crains point; il faut que tu comparaisses devant César, et voici que Dieu t'a donné tous ceux qui naviguent avec toi.
25 Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer; for I believe God that it shall so be, as it hath been told me.
Courage donc, mes amis; car j'ai confiance en Dieu qu'il en sera comme il m'a été dit.
26 And we must come unto a certain island.
Nous devons échouer sur une île. "
27 But after the fourteenth night was come, as we were sailing in Adria, about midnight, the shipmen deemed that they discovered some country.
La quatorzième nuit, comme nous étions ballottés dans l'Adriatique, les matelots soupçonnèrent, vers le milieu de la nuit, qu'on approchait de quelque terre.
28 Who also sounding, found twenty fathoms; and going on a little further, they found fifteen fathoms.
Jetant aussitôt la sonde, ils trouvèrent vingt brasses; un peu plus loin, il la jetèrent de nouveau, et en trouvèrent quinze.
29 Then fearing lest we should fall upon rough places, they cast four anchors out of the stern, and wished for the day.
Dans la crainte de heurter contre des récifs, ils jetèrent quatre ancres de la poupe, et attendirent le jour avec impatience.
30 But as the shipmen sought to fly out of the ship, having let down the boat into the sea, under colour, as though they would have cast anchors out of the forepart of the ship,
Mais comme les matelots cherchaient à s'échapper du navire, et que déjà, sous prétexte d'aller jeter des ancres du côté de la proue, ils avaient mis la chaloupe à flot,
31 Paul said to the centurion, and to the soldiers: Except these stay in the ship, you cannot be saved.
Paul dit au centurion et aux soldats: " Si ces hommes ne restent pas dans le navire, vous êtes tous perdus. "
32 Then the soldiers cut off the ropes of the boat, and let her fall off.
Alors les soldats coupèrent les amarres de la chaloupe, et la laissèrent tomber.
33 And when it began to be light, Paul besought them all to take meat, saying: This day is the fourteenth day that you have waited, and continued fasting, taking nothing.
En attendant le jour, Paul exhorta tout le monde à prendre de la nourriture: " Voici, leur dit-il, le quatorzième jour que, remplis d'anxiété, vous restez à jeun sans rien prendre.
34 Wherefore I pray you to take some meat for your health’s sake; for there shall not an hair of the head of any of you perish.
Je vous engage donc à manger, car cela importe à votre salut; aucun de vous ne perdra un cheveu de sa tête. "
35 And when he had said these things, taking bread, he gave thanks to God in the sight of them all; and when he had broken it, he began to eat.
Ayant ainsi parlé, il prit du pain, et après avoir rendu grâces à Dieu devant tous, il le rompit et se mit à manger.
36 Then were they all of better cheer, and they also took some meat.
Et tous, reprenant courage, mangèrent aussi.
37 And we were in all in the ship, two hundred threescore and sixteen souls.
Nous étions en tout, sur le bâtiment, deux cent soixante-seize personnes.
38 And when they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship, casting the wheat into the sea.
Quand ils eurent mangés suffisamment, ils allégèrent le navire en jetant les provisions à la mer.
39 And when it was day, they knew not the land; but they discovered a certain creek that had a shore, into which they minded, if they could, to thrust in the ship.
Le jour étant venu, ils ne reconnurent pas la côte; mais ayant aperçu une baie qui avait une plage de sable, ils résolurent de faire échouer le navire, s'ils le pouvaient.
40 And when they had taken up the anchors, they committed themselves to the sea, loosing withal the rudder bands; and hoisting up the mainsail to the wind, they made towards shore.
On coupa donc les amarres des ancres, qu'on abandonna à la mer; on lâcha en même temps les attaches des gouvernails, on mit au vent la voile d'artimon et on se dirigea vers la plage.
41 And when we were fallen into a place where two seas met, they run the ship aground; and the forepart indeed, sticking fast, remained unmoveable: but the hinder part was broken with the violence of the sea.
Mais ayant touché sur une langue de terre, ils y échouèrent; la proue s'enfonça et resta immobile, tandis que la poupe se disloquait sous la violence des vagues.
42 And the soldiers’ counsel was, that they should kill the prisoners, lest any of them, swimming out, should escape.
Les soldats furent d'avis de tuer les prisonniers, de peur que quelqu'un d'entre eux ne s'échappât à la nage.
43 But the centurion, willing to save Paul, forbade it to be done; and he commanded that they who could swim, should cast themselves first into the sea, and save themselves, and get to land.
Mais le centurion, qui voulait sauver Paul, les empêcha d'exécuter leur dessein. Il ordonna à ceux qui savaient nager de se jeter à l'eau les premiers et de gagner la terre,
44 And the rest, some they carried on boards, and some on those things that belonged to the ship. And so it came to pass, that every soul got safe to land.
et aux autres de se mettre sur des planches ou sur des débris du vaisseau. Et ainsi tous atteignirent le rivage sains et saufs.
