Acts 25
1 Now when Festus was come into the province, after three days, he went up to Jerusalem from Caesarea.
Festus, étant donc arrivé dans sa province, monta trois jours après de Césarée à Jérusalem.
2 And the chief priests, and principal men of the Jews, went unto him against Paul: and they besought him,
Les chefs des prêtres et les principaux d’entre les Juifs vinrent lui porter plainte contre Paul. Avec beaucoup d’instances
3 Requesting favour against him, that he would command him to be brought to Jerusalem, laying wait to kill him in the way.
ils lui demandèrent comme une faveur, dans un but hostile à l’Apôtre, qu’il le fît transférer à Jérusalem; ils préparaient un guet-apens pour le faire périr en route.
4 But Festus answered: That Paul was kept in Caesarea, and that he himself would very shortly depart thither.
Festus répondit que Paul était gardé à Césarée et que lui-même y retournerait sous peu.
5 Let them, therefore, saith he, among you that are able, go down with me, and accuse him, if there be any crime in the man.
« Que ceux d’entre vous, ajouta-t-il, qui ont qualité pour cela, descendent avec moi, et s’il y a des charges contre cet homme, qu’ils l’accusent. »
6 And having tarried among them no more than eight or ten days, he went down to Caesarea, and the next day he sat in the judgment seat; and commanded Paul to be brought.
Après avoir seulement passé huit ou dix jours à Jérusalem, Festus descendit à Césarée. Le lendemain, ayant pris place sur son tribunal, il fit amener Paul.
7 Who being brought, the Jews stood about him, who were come down from Jerusalem, objecting many and grievous causes, which they could not prove;
Quand on l’eut amené, les Juifs venus de Jérusalem l’entourèrent, en portant contre lui de nombreuses et graves accusations, qu’ils ne pouvaient prouver.
8 Paul making answer for himself: Neither against the law of the Jews, nor against the temple, nor against Caesar, have I offended in any thing.
Paul dit pour sa défense: « Je n’ai rien fait de répréhensible, ni contre la loi des Juifs, ni contre le temple, ni contre César. »
9 But Festus, willing to shew the Jews a pleasure, answering Paul, said: Wilt thou go up to Jerusalem, and there be judged of these things before me?
Festus, qui voulait faire plaisir aux Juifs, dit à Paul: « Veux-tu monter à Jérusalem et y être jugé sur ces griefs en ma présence? »
10 Then Paul said: I stand at Caesar’s judgment seat, where I ought to be judged. To the Jews I have done no injury, as thou very well knowest.
Paul répondit: « Je suis devant le tribunal de César; c’est là que je dois être jugé. Je n’ai fait aucun tort aux Juifs, comme tu le sais bien toi-même.
11 For if I have injured them, or have committed any thing worthy of death, I refuse not to die. But if there be none of these things whereof they accuse me, no man may deliver me to them: I appeal to Caesar.
Si j’ai commis quelque injustice ou quelque attentat qui mérite la mort, je ne refuse pas de mourir; mais s’il n’y a rien de fondé dans leurs accusations, personne n’a le droit de me livrer à eux. J’en appelle à César. »
12 Then Festus having conferred with the council, answered: Hast thou appealed to Caesar? To Caesar shalt thou go.
Alors Festus, après en avoir conféré avec son conseil, répondit: « Tu en as appelé à César, tu iras à César. »
13 And after some days, king Agrippa and Bernice came down to Caesarea to salute Festus.
Quelques jours après le roi Agrippa et Bérénice arrivèrent à Césarée pour saluer Festus.
14 And as they tarried there many days, Festus told the king of Paul, saying: A certain man was left prisoner by Felix.
Comme ils y passèrent plusieurs jours, Festus exposa au roi l’affaire de Paul, en disant: « Il y a ici un homme que Félix a laissé prisonnier.
15 About whom, when I was at Jerusalem, the chief priests, and the ancients of the Jews, came unto me, desiring condemnation against him.
Lorsque j’étais à Jérusalem, les princes des prêtres et les Anciens des Juifs ont porté plainte contre lui, demandant sa condamnation.
16 To whom I answered: It is not the custom of the Romans to condemn any man, before that he who is accused have his accusers present, and have liberty to make his answer, to clear himself of the things laid to his charge.
Je leur ai répondu que ce n’est pas la coutume des Romains de livrer un homme avant d’avoir confronté l’accusé avec ses accusateurs et de lui avoir donné les moyens de se justifier de ce dont on l’accuse.
17 When therefore they were come hither, without any delay, on the day following, sitting in the judgment seat, I commanded the man to be brought.
Ils sont donc venus ici, et, sans différer, j’ai pris place le lendemain sur mon tribunal, et j’ai ordonné de m’amener cet homme.
18 Against whom, when the accusers stood up, they brought no accusation of things which I thought ill of:
Les accusateurs, s’étant présentés, ne lui imputèrent aucun des crimes que je supposais;
19 But had certain questions of their own superstition against him, and of one Jesus deceased, whom Paul affirmed to be alive.
mais ils eurent avec lui des controverses ayant trait à leur religion particulière et à un certain Jésus, qui est mort et que Paul affirmait être vivant.
20 I therefore being in a doubt of this manner of question, asked him whether he would go to Jerusalem, and there be judged of these things.
Comme j’étais embarrassé pour faire une enquête sur ces matières, je lui demandai s’il voulait aller à Jérusalem et y être jugé sur ces accusations.
21 But Paul appealing to be reserved unto the hearing of Augustus, I commanded him to be kept, till I might send him to Caesar.
Mais Paul en ayant appelé, pour que sa cause fût réservée à la connaissance de l’empereur, j’ai ordonné de le garder jusqu’à ce que je l’envoie à César. »
22 And Agrippa said to Festus: I would also hear the man, myself. Tomorrow, said he, thou shalt hear him.
Agrippa dit à Festus: « J’aurais voulu, moi aussi, entendre cet homme. » — « Demain, répondit Festus, tu l’entendras. »
23 And on the next day, when Agrippa and Bernice were come with great pomp, and had entered into the hall of audience, with the tribunes, and principal men of the city, at Festus’ commandment, Paul was brought forth.
Le lendemain, Agrippa et Bérénice vinrent en grand faste. Quand ils furent dans la salle d’audience avec les tribuns et les principaux personnages de la ville, Paul fut amené par l’ordre de Festus.
24 And Festus saith: King Agrippa, and all ye men who are here present with us, you see this man, about whom all the multitude of the Jews dealt with me at Jerusalem, requesting and crying out that he ought not to live any longer.
Et Festus dit: « Roi Agrippa, et vous tous qui êtes présents avec nous, vous avez devant vous l’homme au sujet duquel les Juifs sont venus en foule me parler soit à Jérusalem, soit ici, en criant qu’il ne fallait plus le laisser vivre.
25 Yet have I found nothing that he hath committed worthy of death. But forasmuch as he himself hath appealed to Augustus, I have determined to send him.
Pour moi, ayant reconnu qu’il n’a rien fait qui mérite la mort, et lui-même en ayant appelé à l’empereur, j’ai résolu de le lui envoyer.
26 Of whom I have nothing certain to write to my lord. For which cause I have brought him forth before you, and especially before thee, O king Agrippa, that examination being made, I may have what to write.
Comme je n’ai rien de précis à écrire à l’empereur sur son compte, je l’ai fait comparaître devant vous, et surtout devant toi, roi Agrippa, afin qu’après cette audience je puisse rédiger mon rapport.
27 For it seemeth to me unreasonable to send a prisoner, and not to signify the things laid to his charge.
Car il me paraît déraisonnable d’envoyer un prisonnier, sans indiquer en même temps de quoi on l’accuse. »
