Acts 14

1 And it came to pass in Iconium, that they entered together into the synagogue of the Jews, and so spoke that a very great multitude both of the Jews and of the Greeks did believe.

A Icone, ils entrèrent ensemble dans la synagogue des Juifs, et ils parlèrent de telle sorte qu'une grande multitude de Juifs et de Grecs crurent.

2 But the unbelieving Jews stirred up and incensed the minds of the Gentiles against the brethren.

Mais les Juifs incrédules excitèrent et aigrirent les âmes des païens contre les frères.

3 A long time therefore they abode there, dealing confidently in the Lord, who gave testimony to the word of his grace, granting signs and wonders to be done by their hands.

Ils restèrent là longtemps, parlant avec assurance au Seigneur, qui rendait témoignage à la parole de sa grâce, en accordant que des signes et des prodiges se fassent par leurs mains.

4 And the multitude of the city was divided; and some of them indeed held with the Jews, but some with the apostles.

Mais la foule de la ville était divisée. Une partie prenait parti pour les Juifs et l'autre pour les apôtres.

5 And when there was an assault made by the Gentiles and the Jews with their rulers, to use them contumeliously, and to stone them:

Une partie des païens et des Juifs, avec leurs chefs, cherchant à les maltraiter et à les lapider,

6 They understanding it, fled to Lystra, and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and to the whole country round about,

ils en eurent connaissance et s'enfuirent dans les villes de Lycaonie, Lystre, Derbe et les environs.

7 and were there preaching the gospel.

Ils y prêchaient la Bonne Nouvelle.

8 And there sat a certain man at Lystra, impotent in his feet, a cripple from his mother’s womb, who never had walked.

A Lystre, un homme était assis, impotent des pieds, infirme dès le sein de sa mère, et qui n'avait jamais marché.

9 This same heard Paul speaking. Who looking upon him, and seeing that he had faith to be healed,

Il écoutait parler Paul, qui, fixant les yeux sur lui et voyant qu'il avait la foi pour être guéri,

10 Said with a loud voice: Stand upright on thy feet. And he leaped up, and walked.

dit d'une voix forte: « Redresse-toi sur tes pieds! » Il se leva d'un bond et marcha.

11 And when the multitudes had seen what Paul had done, they lifted up their voice in the Lycaonian tongue, saying: The gods are come down to us in the likeness of men;

La foule, voyant ce que Paul avait fait, éleva la voix et dit en langue lycaonienne: « Les dieux sont descendus chez nous sous la forme d'hommes. »

12 And they called Barnabas, Jupiter: but Paul, Mercury; because he was chief speaker.

Ils appelaient Barnabas « Jupiter », et Paul « Mercure », parce qu'il était le principal orateur.

13 The priest also of Jupiter that was before the city, bringing oxen and garlands before the gate, would have offered sacrifice with the people.

Le prêtre de Jupiter, dont le temple était en face de leur ville, amenait aux portes des bœufs et des guirlandes, et il aurait voulu offrir un sacrifice avec la foule.

14 Which, when the apostles Barnabas and Paul had heard, rending their clothes, they leaped out among the people, crying,

Mais les apôtres Barnabas et Paul, ayant appris cela, déchirèrent leurs vêtements et se jetèrent dans la foule, en s'écriant:

15 And saying: Ye men, why do ye these things? We also are mortals, men like unto you, preaching to you to be converted from these vain things, to the living God, who made the heaven, and the earth, and the sea, and all things that are in them:

« Hommes, pourquoi faites-vous cela? Nous aussi, nous sommes des hommes de même nature que vous, et nous vous apportons une bonne nouvelle, afin que vous vous détourniez de ces choses vaines pour vous tourner vers le Dieu vivant, qui a fait le ciel, la terre, la mer et tout ce qui s'y trouve;

16 Who in times past suffered all nations to walk in their own ways.

qui, dans les générations passées, a laissé toutes les nations suivre leurs propres voies.

17 Nevertheless he left not himself without testimony, doing good from heaven, giving rains and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness.

Pourtant, il ne s'est pas laissé sans témoignage, en ce qu'il a fait du bien et vous a donné des pluies du ciel et des saisons fécondes, remplissant nos cœurs de nourriture et de joie. »

18 And speaking these things, they scarce restrained the people from sacrificing to them.

Même en disant ces choses, ils n'empêchaient guère la foule de leur offrir un sacrifice.

19 Now there came thither certain Jews from Antioch, and Iconium: and persuading the multitude, and stoning Paul, drew him out of the city, thinking him to be dead.

Mais des Juifs d'Antioche et d'Iconium, étant arrivés là, persuadèrent la foule de lapider Paul et de le traîner hors de la ville, croyant qu'il était mort.

20 But as the disciples stood round about him, he rose up and entered into the city, and the next day he departed with Barnabas to Derbe.

Mais comme les disciples se tenaient autour de lui, il se leva, et entra dans la ville. Le lendemain, il partit avec Barnabé pour Derbe.

21 And when they had preached the gospel to that city, and had taught many, they returned again to Lystra, and to Iconium, and to Antioch:

Après avoir annoncé la bonne nouvelle dans cette ville et fait beaucoup de disciples, ils retournèrent à Lystre, à Icone et à Antioche,

22 Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith: and that through many tribulations we must enter into the kingdom of God.

fortifiant l'âme des disciples, les exhortant à persévérer dans la foi, et leur disant que c'est par beaucoup d'afflictions qu'il faut entrer dans le royaume de Dieu.

23 And when they had ordained to them priests in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, in whom they believed.

Après avoir établi pour eux des anciens dans chaque assemblée, et après avoir prié et jeûné, ils les recommandaient au Seigneur en qui ils avaient cru.

24 And passing through Pisidia, they came into Pamphylia.

Ils traversèrent la Pisidie et arrivèrent en Pamphylie.

25 And having spoken the word of the Lord in Perge, they went down into Attalia:

Après avoir annoncé la parole à Perge, ils descendirent à Attalie.

26 And thence they sailed to Antioch, from whence they had been delivered to the grace of God, unto the work which they accomplished.

De là, ils s'embarquèrent pour Antioche, d'où ils avaient été remis à la grâce de Dieu pour l'œuvre qu'ils avaient accomplie.

27 And when they were come, and had assembled the church, they related what great things God had done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles.

Lorsqu'ils furent arrivés et qu'ils eurent rassemblé l'assemblée, ils racontèrent tout ce que Dieu avait fait avec eux, et qu'il avait ouvert aux nations une porte de la foi.

28 And they abode no small time with the disciples.

Ils restèrent là longtemps avec les disciples.
