2 Samuel 18
1 And David having reviewed his people, appointed over them captains of thousands and of hundreds,
David, ayant passé en revue le peuple qui était avec lui, établit sur eux des chefs de milliers et des chefs de centaines.
2 And sent forth a third part of the people under the hand of Joab, and a third part under the hand of Abisai the son of Sarvia Joab’s brother, and a third part under the hand of Ethai, who was of Geth: and the king said to the people: I also will go forth with you.
David mit le peuple, un tiers aux mains de Joab, un tiers aux mains d'Abisaï, fils de Sarvia, frère de Joab, et un tiers aux mains d'Ethaï, le Géthéen. Et le roi dit au peuple: « Moi aussi je veux sortir avec vous. »
3 And the people answered: Thou shalt not go forth: for if we flee away, they will not much mind us: or if half of us should fall, they will not greatly care: for thou alone art accounted for ten thousand: it is better therefore that thou shouldst be in the city to succour us.
Mais le peuple dit: « Tu ne sortiras point! Car, si nous sommes mis en fuite, ils ne prendront pas garde à nous, et si la moitié d'entre nous succombe, ils n'y prendront pas garde. Mais toi, tu es comme dix mille d'entre nous; il vaut donc mieux que tu puisses venir de la ville à notre secours. »
4 And the king said to them: What seemeth good to you, that will I do. And the king stood by the gate: and all the people went forth by their troops, by hundreds and by thousands.
Le roi leur répondit: « Ce qui vous paraîtra bon, je le ferai. » Et le roi se tint à côté de la porte, pendant que tout le peuple sortait par groupes de cent et par groupes de mille.
5 And the king commanded Joab, and Abisai, and Ethai, saying: Save me the boy Absalom. And all the people heard the king giving charge to all the princes concerning Absalom.
Le roi donna cet ordre à Joab, à Abisaï et à Ethaï: « Ménagez-moi le jeune homme, Absalom! » Et tout le peuple entendit que le roi donnait un ordre à tous les chefs au sujet d'Absalom.
6 So the people went out into the field against Israel and the battle was fought in the forest of Ephraim.
Le peuple sortit dans la campagne à la rencontre d'Israël, et la bataille eut lieu dans la forêt d'Ephraïm.
7 And the people of Israel were defeated there by David’s army, and a great slaughter was made that day of twenty thousand men.
Là le peuple d'Israël fut battu devant les serviteurs de David, et il y eut là en ce jour un grand carnage; vingt mille hommes périrent.
8 And the battle there was scattered over the face of all the country, and there were many more of the people whom the forest consumed, than whom the sword devoured that day.
Le combat s'étendit sur la surface de tout le pays, et ce jour-là la forêt dévora plus de gens que n'en dévora l'épée.
9 And it happened that Absalom met the servants of David, riding on a mule: and as the mule went under a thick and large oak, his head stuck in the oak: and while he hung between the heaven and the earth, the mule on which he rode passed on.
Absalom se trouva en présence des serviteurs de David. Absalom était monté sur un mulet, et le mulet s'engagea dans les branches touffues d'un grand térébinthe; la tête d'Absalom se prit au térébinthe, et il resta suspendu entre le ciel et la terre, et le mulet qui le portait passa outre.
10 And one saw this and told Joab, saying: I saw Absalom hanging upon an oak.
Un homme l'ayant vu, vint le rapporter à Joab, disant: « Voilà que j'ai vu Absalom suspendu à un térébinthe. »
11 And Joab said to the man that told him: If thou sawest him, why didst thou not stab him to the ground, and I would have given thee ten sicles of silver, and belt?
Joab dit à l'homme qui lui apportait cette nouvelle: « Tu l'as vu! Pourquoi donc ne l'as-tu pas abattu sur place? Je t'aurais bien donné dix sicles d'argent et une ceinture. »
12 And he said to Joab: If thou wouldst have paid down in my hands a thousand pieces of silver, I would not lay my hands upon the king’s son: for in our hearing he king charged thee, and Abisai, and Ethai, saying: Save me the boy Absalom.
Cet homme répondit à Joab: « Non, quand je pèserais sur ma main mille sicles d'argent, je n'étendrais pas la main sur le fils du roi; car à nos oreilles le roi t'a donné cet ordre, à toi, à Abisaï et à Ethaï: Prenez garde chacun de toucher au jeune homme, à Absalom!
13 Yea and if I should have acted boldly against my own life, this could not have been hid from the king, and wouldst thou have stood by me?
Et si j'avais perfidement attenté à sa vie, rien n'aurait été caché au roi, toi-même tu te serais dressé contre moi. »
14 And Joab said: Not as thou wilt, but will set upon him in thy sight. So he took three lances in his hand, and thrust them into the heart of Absalom: and whilst he yet panted for life, sticking on the oak,
Joab dit: « Je ne veux pas m'attarder auprès de toi; » et ayant pris en main trois javelots, il les enfonça dans le cœur d'Absalom, encore vivant au milieu du térébinthe.
15 Ten young men, armourbearers of Joab, ran up, and striking him slew him.
Et dix jeunes gens, qui portaient les armes de Joab, entourèrent Absalom, et, le frappant, lui donnèrent la mort.
16 And Joab sounded the trumpet, and kept back the people from pursuing after Israel in their flight, being willing to spare he multitude.
Joab fit sonner de la trompette, et le peuple revint de poursuivre Israël, car Joab retint le peuple.
17 And they took Absalom, and cast him into a great pit in the forest, and they laid an exceeding great heap of stories upon him: but all Israel fled to their own dwellings.
Ayant pris Absalom, ils le jetèrent dans une grande fosse au milieu de la forêt, et on éleva sur lui un très grand monceau de pierres. Et tout Israël s'enfuit chacun dans sa tente.
18 Now Absalom had reared up for himself, in his lifetime, a pillar, which is in the king’s valley: for he said: I have no son, and this shall be the monument of my name. And he called the pillar by is own name, and it is called the hand of Absalom, to this day.
De son vivant Absalom s'était érigé le monument qui est dans la vallée du Roi; car il disait: « Je n'ai point de fils pour conserver le souvenir de mon nom. » Et il donna son propre nom au monument, et on l'appela la Main d'Absalom, jusqu'à ce jour.
19 And Achimaas the son of Sadoc said: I will run and tell the king, that the Lord hath done judgment for him from the hand of his enemies.
Achimaas, fils de Sadoc, dit: « Laisse-moi courir et porter au roi la bonne nouvelle que Yahweh lui a fait justice en le délivrant de la main de ses ennemis. »
20 And Joab said to him: Thou shalt not be the messenger this day, but shalt bear tidings another day: this day I will not have thee bear tidings, because the king’s son is dead.
Joab lui dit: « Tu ne seras pas aujourd'hui le porteur de la bonne nouvelle; tu la porteras une autre fois, mais tu ne la porteras pas aujourd'hui puisque le fils du roi est mort. »
21 And Joab said to Chusai: Go, and tell the king what thou hast seen. Chusai bowed down to Joab, and ran.
Et Joab dit à un Couschite: « Va, et annonce au roi ce que tu as vu. » Le Couschite se prosterna devant Joab et courut.
22 Then Achimaas the son of Sadoc said to Joab again: Why might not I also run after Chusai? And Joab said to him: Why wilt thou run, my son? thou wilt not be the bearer of good tidings.
Achimaas, fils de Sadoc, dit encore à Joab: « Quoi qu'il puisse arriver, laisse-moi courir, moi aussi, après le Couschite. » Et Joab dit: « Pourquoi veux-tu courir, mon fils? Ce message ne saurait te profiter. »
23 He answered: But what if I run? And he said to him: Run. Then Achimaas running by a nearer way passed Chusai.
Achimaas reprit: « Quoi qu'il arrive, je courrai. » Et Joab lui dit: « Cours! » Achimaas courut par le chemin de la Plaine, et il devança le Couschite.
24 And David sat between the two gates: and the watchman that was on the top of the gate upon the wall, lifting up his eyes, saw a man running alone.
David était assis entre les deux portes. La sentinelle alla sur le toit de la porte, au-dessus de la muraille et, levant les yeux, elle regarda et voici un homme qui courait seul.
25 And crying out he told the king: and the king said: If he be alone, there are good tidings in his mouth. And as he was coming apace, and drawing nearer,
La sentinelle cria et avertit le roi. Le roi dit: « S'il est seul, il y a une bonne nouvelle dans sa bouche. » Pendant que cet homme continuait à approcher,
26 The watchman saw another man running, and crying aloud from above, he said: I see another man running alone. And the king said: He also is a good messenger.
la sentinelle vit un autre homme qui courait. La sentinelle cria au portier et dit: « Voici un homme qui court seul. » Le roi dit: « Lui aussi apporte un bonne nouvelle. »
27 And the watchman said: The running of the foremost seemeth to me like the running of Achimaas the son of Sadoc. And the king said: He is a good man: and cometh with good news.
La sentinelle dit: « Je vois que la manière de courir du premier est la manière de courir d'Achimaas, fils de Sadoc. » Et le roi dit: « C'est un homme de bien; il vient pour de bonnes nouvelles. »
28 And Achimaas crying out, said to the king: God save thee, O king. And falling down before the king with his face to the ground, he said: Blessed be the Lord thy God, who hath shut up the men that have lifted up their hands against the lord my king.
Achimaas, cria et dit au roi: « Victoire! » Puis il se prosterna devant le roi la face contre terre, et dit: « Béni soit Yahweh, ton Dieu, qui a livré les hommes qui levaient la main contre mon seigneur le roi! »
29 And the king said: Is the young man Absalom safe? And Achimaas said: I saw a great tumult, O king, when thy servant Joab sent me thy servant: I know nothing else.
Le roi dit: « Tout va-t-il bien pour le jeune homme, pour Absalom? » Achimaas répondit: « J'ai aperçu une grande foule au moment où Joab envoyait le serviteur du roi et moi, ton serviteur, et j'ignore ce que c'était. »
30 And the king said to him: Pass, and stand here.
Et le roi dit: « Ecarte-toi et tiens-toi ici. » Il s'écarta et demeura là.
31 And when he bad passed, and stood still, Chusai appeared: and coming up he said: I bring good tidings, my lord, the king, for the Lord hath judged for thee this day from the hand of all that have risen up against thee.
Et voici qu'arriva le Couschite; il dit: « Que le roi mon seigneur apprenne une bonne nouvelle! Aujourd'hui Yahweh t'a fait justice de tous ceux qui s'élevaient contre toi. »
32 And the king said to Chusai: Is the young man Absalom safe? And Chusai answering him, said: Let the enemies of my lord, the king, and all that rise against him unto evil, be as the young man is.
Le roi dit au Couschite: « Tout va-t-il bien pour le jeune homme, pour Absalom? » Le Couschite répondit: « Qu'ils soient comme ce jeune homme, les ennemis de mon seigneur le roi et tous ceux qui s'élèvent contre toi pour te faire du mal! »
33 The king therefore being much moved, went up to the high chamber over the gate, and wept. And as he went he spoke in this manner: My son Absalom, Absalom my son: would to God that I might die for thee, Absalom my son, my son Absalom.
Le roi, tremblant d'émotion, monta dans la chambre au-dessus de la porte et pleura. Il disait en marchant: « Mon fils Absalom! Mon fils, mon fils Absalom! Que ne suis-je mort à ta place! Absalom mon fils, mon fils! »
