2 Kings 5
1 Naaman, general of the army of the king of Syria, was a great man with his master, and honourable: for by him the Lord gave deliverance to Syria: and he was a valiant man and rich, but a leper.
Naaman, chef de l'armée du roi de Syrie, était auprès de son maître un homme puissant et considéré, car c'était par lui que Yahweh avait accordé le salut aux Syriens; mais cet homme fort et vaillant était lépreux.
2 Now there had gone out robbers from Syria, and had led away captive out of the land of Israel a little maid, and she waited upon Naaman’s wife.
Or les Syriens, étant sortis par bandes, avaient emmené captive une petite fille du pays d'Israël, qui était au service de la femme de Naaman.
3 And she said to her mistress: I wish my master had been with the prophet, that is in Samaria: he would certainly have healed him of the leprosy which he hath.
Elle dit à sa maîtresse: « Oh! Si mon seigneur était auprès du prophète qui est à Samarie, le prophète le délivrerait de sa lèpre. »
4 Then Naaman went in to his lord, and told him, saying: Thus and thus said tile girl from the land of Israel.
Naaman vint rapporter ce propos à son maître, en disant: « La jeune fille du pays d'Israël a parlé de telle et telle manière. »
5 And the king of Syria sad to him: Go, and I will send a letter to the king of Israel. And he departed, and took with him ten talents of silver, and six thousand pieces of gold, and tell changes of raiment,
Et le roi de Syrie dit: « Va, et j'enverrai une lettre au roi d'Israël. » Il partit, prenant avec lui dix talents d'argent, six mille sicles d'or et dix vêtements de rechange.
6 And brought the letter to the king of Israel, in these words: When thou shalt receive this letter, know that I have sent to thee Naaman my servant, that thou mayest heal him of his leprosy.
Il porta au roi d'Israël la lettre où il était dit: « Or donc, quand cette lettre te sera parvenue, voici que tu sauras que je t'envoie Naaman, mon serviteur, pour que tu le délivres de sa lèpre. »
7 And when the king of Israel had read the letter, he rent his garments, and said: Am I God, to be able to kill and give life, that this man hath sent to me, to heal a man of his leprosy? mark, and see how he seeketh occasions against me.
Après avoir lu la lettre, le roi d'Israël déchira ses vêtements et dit: « Suis-je un dieu, capable de faire mourir et de faire vivre, qu'il envoie vers moi pour que je délivre un homme de sa lèpre? Sachez donc et voyez qu'il me cherche querelle. »
8 And when Eliseus the man of God had heard this, to wit, that the king of Israel had rent his garments, he sent to him, saying: Why hast thou rent thy garments? let him come to me, and let him know that there is a prophet in Israel.
Lorsqu'Elisée, homme de Dieu, apprit que le roi d'Israël avait déchiré ses vêtements, il envoya dire au roi: « Pourquoi as-tu déchiré tes vêtements? Qu'il vienne donc à moi, et il saura qu'il y a un prophète en Israël. »
9 So Naaman came with Iris horses and chariots, and stood at the door of the house of Eliseus:
Naaman vint avec ses chevaux et son char, et il s'arrêta à la porte de la maison d'Elisée.
10 And Eliseus sent a messenger to him, saying: Go, and wash seven times in the Jordan, and thy flesh shall recover health, and thee shalt be clean.
Elisée lui envoya un messager pour lui dire: « Va, et lave-toi sept fois dans le Jourdain; ta chair te reviendra, et tu seras pur. »
11 Naaman was angry and went away, saying: I thought he would hare come out to me, and standing would hare invoked the name of the Lord his God, and touched with his hand the place of the leprosy, and healed me.
Naaman fut irrité, et il s'en alla, en disant: « Voici que je me disais: Il sortira vers moi, il se présentera lui-même, il invoquera le nom de Yahweh, son Dieu, il agitera sa main sur la plaie et délivrera le lépreux.
12 Are not the Abana, and the Pharphar, rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel, that I may wash in them, and be made clean? So as he turned, and was going away with indignation,
Les fleuves de Damas, l'Abana et le Pharphar, ne valent-ils pas mieux que toutes les eaux d'Israël? Ne pourrais-je pas m'y laver et devenir pur? » Et se tournant, il s'en allait en colère.
13 His servants came to him, and said to him: Father, if the prophet had bid thee do some great thing, surely thou shouldst have done it: how much rather what he now hath said to thee: Wash, and thou shalt he clean?
Ses serviteurs s'approchèrent pour lui parler, et ils dirent: « Mon père, si le prophète t'avait demandé quelque chose de difficile, ne l'aurais-tu pas fait? Combien plus dois-tu lui obéir, quand il t'a dit: Lave-toi, et tu seras pur? »
14 Then he went down, and washed in the Jordan seven times: according to the word of the man of God, and his flesh was restored, like the flesh of a little child, and he was made clean.
Il descendit et se plongea sept fois dans le Jourdain, selon la parole de l'homme de Dieu; et sa chair redevint comme la chair d'un petit enfant, et il fut purifié.
15 And returning to the man of God with all his train, be came, and stood before him, and said: In truth, I know there is no other God in all the earth, but only in Israel: I beseech thee therefore take a blessing of thy servant.
Naaman retourna vers l'homme de Dieu, avec toute sa suite. Quand il fut arrivé, il se présenta devant lui et dit: « Voici donc que je sais qu'il n'y a point de Dieu sur toute la terre, si ce n'est en Israël. Et maintenant, accepte donc un présent de la part de ton serviteur. »
16 But he answered: As the Lord liveth, before whom I stand, I will receive none. And when he pressed him, he still refused.
Elisée répondit: « Aussi vrai que Yahweh devant qui je me tiens est vivant, je n'accepterai pas! » Naaman le pressant d'accepter, il refusa.
17 And Naaman said: As thou wilt: but I beseech thee, grant to me thy servant, to take from hence two mules’ burden of earth: for thy servant will not henceforth offer holocaust, or victim, to other gods, but to the Lord.
Et Naaman dit: « Sinon, permets que l'on donne de la terre à ton serviteur, la charge de deux mulets; car ton serviteur ne veut plus offrir à d'autres dieux ni holocauste ni sacrifice, si ce n'est à Yahweh.
18 But there is only this, for which thou shalt entreat the Lord for thy servant, when my master goeth into the temple of Remmon, to worship: and he leaneth upon my hand, if I bow down in the temple of Remmon, when he boweth down in the same place, that the Lord pardon me thy servant for this thing.
Toutefois, que Yahweh pardonne ceci à ton serviteur: Quand mon maître entre dans la maison de Remmon pour y adorer, et qu'il s'appuie sur ma main, je me prosterne aussi dans la maison de Remmon; daigne Yahweh pardonner à ton serviteur si je me prosterne dans la maison de Remmon! »
19 And he said to him: Go in peace. So he departed from him in the springtime of the earth.
Elisée lui dit: « Va en paix. » Et Naaman quitta Elisée. Il était à une certaine distance,
20 But Giezi the servant of the man of God said: My master hath spared Naaman this Syrian, in not receiving of him that which he brought: as the Lord liveth, I will run after him, and take some thing of him:
lorsque Giézi, serviteur d'Elisée, homme de Dieu, dit en lui-même: « Voici que mon maître a ménagé Naaman, ce Syrien, en n'acceptant pas de sa main ce qu'il avait apporté. Yahweh est vivant! Je vais courir après lui et j'en obtiendrai quelque chose. »
21 And Giezi followed after Naaman: and when he saw him running after him, he leapt down from his chariot to meet him, and said: Is all well?
Et Giézi se mit à poursuivre Naaman. Naaman, le voyant courir après lui, descendit de son char pour aller à sa rencontre, et il dit: « Tout va-t-il bien? »
22 And he said: Well: my master hath sent me to thee, saying: Just now there are come to me from mount Ephraim, two young men of the sons of the prophets: give them a talent of silver, and two changes of garments.
Giézi répondit: « Tout va bien! Mon maître m'envoie te dire: Voici que viennent d'arriver chez moi deux jeunes gens de la montagne d'Ephraïm, d'entre les fils des prophètes; donne pour eux, je te prie, un talent d'argent et deux vêtements de rechange. »
23 And Naaman said: It is better that thou take two talents. And he forced him, and bound two talents of silver in two bags, and two changes of garments, and laid them upon two of his servants, and they carried them before him.
Naaman dit: « Consens à prendre deux talents. » Il le pressa d'accepter et, ayant serré deux talents d'argent dans deux sacs avec deux habits de rechange, il les remit à deux de ses serviteurs pour les porter devant Giézi.
24 And when he was come, and now it was the evening, he took them from their hands, and laid them up in the house, and sent the men away, and they departed.
Arrivé à la colline, Giézi les prit de leurs mains et les déposa dans la maison, puis il renvoya les hommes, qui partirent.
25 But he went in, and stood before his master. And Eliseus said: Whence comest thou, Giezi? He answered: Thy servant went no whither.
Et il alla se présenter à son maître. Elisée lui dit: « D'où viens-tu, Giézi? » Il répondit: « Ton serviteur n'est allé ni d'un côté ni d'un autre. »
26 But he said: Was not my heart present, when the man turned back from his chariot to meet thee? So now thou hast received money, and received garments, to buy oliveyards, and vineyards, and sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and maidservants.
Mais Elisée lui dit: « Mon esprit n'est-il pas allé avec toi, lorsque cet homme a quitté son char pour venir à ta rencontre? Est-ce le moment d'accepter de l'argent, et d'accepter des vêtements et des oliviers et des vignes et des brebis et des bœufs et des serviteurs et des servantes?
27 But the leprosy of Naaman shall also stick to thee, and to thy seed for ever. And he went out from him a leper as white as snow.
La lèpre de Naaman s'attachera à toi et à ta postérité pour toujours. » Et Giézi sortit de la présence d'Elisée avec une lèpre blanche comme la neige.
