1 Timothy 4

1 Now the Spirit manifestly saith, that in the last times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to spirits of error, and doctrines of devils,

Mais l'Esprit dit expressément que, dans la suite des temps, quelques-uns abandonneront la foi, s'attachant à des esprits séducteurs et à des doctrines de démons,

2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy, and having their conscience seared,

par l'hypocrisie d'hommes qui disent des mensonges, marqués au fer rouge dans leur propre conscience,

3 Forbidding to marry, to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving by the faithful, and by them that have known the truth.

interdisant le mariage et ordonnant de s'abstenir des aliments que Dieu a créés pour être reçus avec actions de grâces par ceux qui croient et connaissent la vérité.

4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be rejected that is received with thanksgiving:

En effet, toute créature de Dieu est bonne, et rien n'est à rejeter s'il est reçu avec actions de grâces.

5 For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.

Car elle est sanctifiée par la parole de Dieu et la prière.

6 These things proposing to the brethren, thou shalt be a good minister of Christ Jesus, nourished up in the words of faith, and of the good doctrine which thou hast attained unto.

Si tu instruis les frères de ces choses, tu seras un bon serviteur de Jésus-Christ, nourri des paroles de la foi et de la bonne doctrine que tu as suivie.

7 But avoid foolish and old wives’ fables: and exercise thyself unto godliness.

Mais refusez les fables profanes et celles des vieilles femmes. Exerce-toi à la piété.

8 For bodily exercise is profitable to little: but godliness is profitable to all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.

Car l'exercice corporel a quelque valeur, mais la piété a une valeur en toutes choses, ayant la promesse de la vie présente et de la vie future.

9 A faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation.

Cette parole est fidèle et digne de toute acceptation.

10 For therefore we labor and are reviled, because we hope in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, especially of the faithful.

Car c'est à cette fin que nous travaillons et que nous souffrons l'opprobre, parce que nous avons mis notre confiance dans le Dieu vivant, qui est le Sauveur de tous les hommes, surtout de ceux qui croient.

11 These things command and teach.

Commandez et enseignez ces choses.

12 Let no man despise thy youth: but be thou an example of the faithful in word, in conversation, in charity, in faith, in chastity.

Que personne ne méprise ta jeunesse; mais sois un exemple pour ceux qui croient, en parole, dans ta manière de vivre, en amour, en esprit, en foi, et en pureté.

13 Till I come, attend unto reading, to exhortation, and to doctrine.

En attendant que je vienne, attachez-vous à la lecture, à l'exhortation et à l'enseignement.

14 Neglect not the grace that is in thee, which was given thee by prophesy, with imposition of the hands of the priesthood.

Ne négligez pas le don qui est en vous, et qui vous a été donné par prophétie, avec l'imposition des mains des anciens.

15 Meditate upon these things, be wholly in these things: that thy profiting may be manifest to all.

Occupe-toi de ces choses. Donne-toi entièrement à elles, afin que tes progrès soient révélés à tous.

16 Take heed to thyself and to doctrine: be earnest in them. For in doing this thou shalt both save thyself and them that hear thee.

Prends garde à toi-même et à ton enseignement. Persévère dans ces choses, car c'est ainsi que tu te sauveras toi-même et ceux qui t'écoutent.
