< Psalms 54 >

1 To the chief Musician. On stringed instruments: an instruction. Of David; when the Ziphites came, and said to Saul, Is not David hiding himself with us? O God, by thy name save me, and by thy strength do me justice.
For the music director. With stringed instruments. A psalm (maskil) of David, concerning the time when the Ziphites came to Saul and told him, “David is hiding among us.” God, because of your very nature, please save me! Vindicate me by your power!
2 O God, hear my prayer; give ear to the words of my mouth.
God, please hear my prayer; listen to what I'm saying.
3 For strangers are risen up against me, and the violent seek after my life: they have not set God before them. (Selah)
For strangers are coming to attack me—violent men who don't care about God are trying to kill me. (Selah)
4 Behold, God is my helper; the Lord is among them that uphold my soul.
But God helps me; the Lord saves my life!
5 He will requite evil to mine enemies: in thy truth cut them off.
The evil my enemies have done will come back upon them. I depend on you to destroy them.
6 I will freely sacrifice unto thee; I will praise thy name, O Jehovah, because it is good.
I will happily offer a sacrifice to you; I will praise the kind of person you are, Lord, for you are good.
7 For he hath delivered me out of all trouble; and mine eye hath seen [its desire] upon mine enemies.
For he has saved me from all my troubles; and I have seen those who hated me defeated.
