Matthew 20
1 For the kingdom of the heavens is like a householder who went out with the early morn to hire workmen for his vineyard.
Car le royaume des cieux est semblable à un maître de maison qui sortit dès le matin, afin de louer des ouvriers pour sa vigne.
2 And having agreed with the workmen for a denarius the day, he sent them into his vineyard.
Il convint avec eux d’un denier par jour, et il les envoya à sa vigne.
3 And having gone out about [the] third hour, he saw others standing in the market-place idle;
Il sortit vers la troisième heure, et il en vit d’autres qui étaient sur la place sans rien faire.
4 and to them he said, Go also ye into the vineyard, and whatsoever may be just I will give you. And they went their way.
Il leur dit: Allez aussi à ma vigne, et je vous donnerai ce qui sera raisonnable.
5 Again, having gone out about the sixth and ninth hour, he did likewise.
Et ils y allèrent. Il sortit de nouveau vers la sixième heure et vers la neuvième, et il fit de même.
6 But about the eleventh [hour], having gone out, he found others standing, and says to them, Why stand ye here all the day idle?
Étant sorti vers la onzième heure, il en trouva d’autres qui étaient sur la place, et il leur dit: Pourquoi vous tenez-vous ici toute la journée sans rien faire?
7 They say to him, Because no man has hired us. He says to them, Go also ye into the vineyard [and whatsoever may be just ye shall receive].
Ils lui répondirent: C’est que personne ne nous a loués. Allez aussi à ma vigne, leur dit-il.
8 But when the evening was come, the lord of the vineyard says to his steward, Call the workmen and pay [them] their wages, beginning from the last even to the first.
Quand le soir fut venu, le maître de la vigne dit à son intendant: Appelle les ouvriers, et paie-leur le salaire, en allant des derniers aux premiers.
9 And when they [who came to work] about the eleventh hour came, they received each a denarius.
Ceux de la onzième heure vinrent, et reçurent chacun un denier.
10 And when the first came, they supposed that they would receive more, and they received also themselves each a denarius.
Les premiers vinrent ensuite, croyant recevoir davantage; mais ils reçurent aussi chacun un denier.
11 And on receiving it they murmured against the master of the house,
En le recevant, ils murmurèrent contre le maître de la maison,
12 saying, These last have worked one hour, and thou hast made them equal to us, who have borne the burden of the day and the heat.
et dirent: Ces derniers n’ont travaillé qu’une heure, et tu les traites à l’égal de nous, qui avons supporté la fatigue du jour et la chaleur.
13 But he answering said to one of them, [My] friend, I do not wrong thee. Didst thou not agree with me for a denarius?
Il répondit à l’un d’eux: Mon ami, je ne te fais pas tort; n’es-tu pas convenu avec moi d’un denier?
14 Take what is thine and go. But it is my will to give to this last even as to thee:
Prends ce qui te revient, et va-t’en. Je veux donner à ce dernier autant qu’à toi.
15 is it not lawful for me to do what I will in my own affairs? Is thine eye evil because I am good?
Ne m’est-il pas permis de faire de mon bien ce que je veux? Ou vois-tu de mauvais œil que je sois bon?
16 Thus shall the last be first, and the first last; for many are called ones, but few chosen ones.
Ainsi les derniers seront les premiers, et les premiers seront les derniers.
17 And Jesus, going up to Jerusalem, took the twelve disciples with [him] apart in the way, and said to them,
Pendant que Jésus montait à Jérusalem, il prit à part les douze disciples, et il leur dit en chemin:
18 Behold we go up to Jerusalem, and the Son of man will be delivered up to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death;
Voici, nous montons à Jérusalem, et le Fils de l’homme sera livré aux principaux sacrificateurs et aux scribes. Ils le condamneront à mort,
19 and they will deliver him up to the nations to mock and to scourge and to crucify, and the third day he shall rise again.
et ils le livreront aux païens, pour qu’ils se moquent de lui, le battent de verges, et le crucifient; et le troisième jour il ressuscitera.
20 Then came to him the mother of the sons of Zebedee, with her sons, doing homage, and asking something of him.
Alors la mère des fils de Zébédée s’approcha de Jésus avec ses fils, et se prosterna, pour lui faire une demande.
21 And he said to her, What wilt thou? She says to him, Speak [the word] that these my two sons may sit, one on thy right hand and one on thy left in thy kingdom.
Il lui dit: Que veux-tu? Ordonne, lui dit-elle, que mes deux fils, que voici, soient assis, dans ton royaume, l’un à ta droite et l’autre à ta gauche.
22 And Jesus answering said, Ye know not what ye ask. Can ye drink the cup which I am about to drink? They say to him, We are able.
Jésus répondit: Vous ne savez ce que vous demandez. Pouvez-vous boire la coupe que je dois boire? Nous le pouvons, dirent-ils.
23 [And] he says to them, Ye shall drink indeed my cup, but to sit on my right hand and on [my] left, is not mine to give, but to those for whom it is prepared of my Father.
Et il leur répondit: Il est vrai que vous boirez ma coupe; mais pour ce qui est d’être assis à ma droite et à ma gauche, cela ne dépend pas de moi, et ne sera donné qu’à ceux à quimon Père l’a réservé.
24 And the ten, having heard [of it], were indignant about the two brothers.
Les dix, ayant entendu cela, furent indignés contre les deux frères.
25 But Jesus having called them to [him], said, Ye know that the rulers of the nations exercise lordship over them, and the great exercise authority over them.
Jésus les appela, et dit: Vous savez que les chefs des nations les tyrannisent, et que les grands les asservissent.
26 It shall not be thus amongst you, but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your servant;
Il n’en sera pas de même au milieu de vous. Mais quiconque veut être grand parmi vous, qu’il soit votre serviteur;
27 and whosoever will be first among you, let him be your bondman;
et quiconque veut être le premier parmi vous, qu’il soit votre esclave.
28 as indeed the Son of man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.
C’est ainsi que le Fils de l’homme est venu, non pour être servi, mais pour servir etdonner sa vie comme la rançon de plusieurs.
29 And as they went out from Jericho a great crowd followed him.
Lorsqu’ils sortirent de Jéricho, une grande foule suivit Jésus.
30 And lo, two blind men, sitting by the wayside, having heard that Jesus was passing by, cried out saying, Have mercy on us, Lord, Son of David.
Et voici, deux aveugles, assis au bord du chemin, entendirent que Jésus passait, et crièrent: Aie pitié de nous, Seigneur, Fils de David!
31 But the crowd rebuked them, that they might be silent. But they cried out the more, saying, Have mercy on us, Lord, Son of David.
La foule les reprenait, pour les faire taire; mais ils crièrent plus fort: Aie pitié de nous, Seigneur, Fils de David!
32 And Jesus, having stopped, called them and said, What will ye that I shall do to you?
Jésus s’arrêta, les appela, et dit: Que voulez-vous que je vous fasse?
33 They say to him, Lord, that our eyes may be opened.
Ils lui dirent: Seigneur, que nos yeux s’ouvrent.
34 And Jesus, moved with compassion, touched their eyes; and immediately their eyes had sight restored to them, and they followed him.
Ému de compassion, Jésus toucha leurs yeux; et aussitôt ils recouvrèrent la vue, et le suivirent.
