Matthew 14
1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus,
En ce temps-là Hérode le tétrarque ouït parler de la renommée de Jésus,
2 and said to his servants, This is John the baptist: he is risen from the dead, and because of this these works of power display their force in him.
et il dit à ses serviteurs: « Cet homme est Jean le baptiste; il est ressuscité des morts, et c'est pourquoi les miracles s'opèrent par lui. »
3 For Herod had seized John, and had bound him and put him in prison on account of Herodias the wife of Philip his brother.
Hérode, en effet, après avoir fait dans le temps arrêter Jean, l'avait fait enchaîner et mettre en prison, à cause d'Hérodias, femme de Philippe son frère;
4 For John said to him, It is not lawful for thee to have her.
car Jean lui disait: « Il ne t'est pas permis de la posséder. »
5 And [while] desiring to kill him, he feared the crowd, because they held him for a prophet.
Et quoiqu'il eût désiré le faire mourir, il avait craint la foule, car on le regardait comme un prophète.
6 But when Herod's birthday was celebrated, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod;
Mais lors de la fête anniversaire de la naissance d'Hérode, la fille d'Hérodias dansa devant tout le monde, et elle plut à Hérode,
7 whereupon he promised with oath to give her whatsoever she should ask.
en sorte qu'il s'engagea par serment à lui donner quoi que ce fût qu'elle demanderait.
8 But she, being set on by her mother, says, Give me here upon a dish the head of John the baptist.
Or, ayant été endoctrinée par sa mère: « Donne-moi, » dit-elle, « ici, sur un plat, la tête de Jean le baptiste. »
9 And the king was grieved; but on account of the oaths, and those lying at table with [him], he commanded [it] to be given.
Et le roi attristé ordonna, à cause de son serment et des convives, qu'on la donnât,
10 And he sent and beheaded John in the prison;
et il envoya décapiter Jean dans la prison.
11 and his head was brought upon a dish, and was given to the damsel, and she carried [it] to her mother.
Et sa tête fut apportée sur un plat, et donnée à la jeune fille, et elle la porta à sa mère.
12 And his disciples came and took the body and buried it, and came and brought word to Jesus.
Et ses disciples vinrent enlever le cadavre, et ils l'enterrèrent, et ils allèrent en informer Jésus.
13 And Jesus, having heard it, went away thence by ship to a desert place apart. And the crowds having heard [of it] followed him on foot from the cities.
Or, Jésus l'ayant appris, partit de là sur une barque, pour se retirer à l'écart dans un lieu désert, et la foule l'ayant su le suivit à pied des différentes villes.
14 And going out he saw a great crowd, and was moved with compassion about them, and healed their infirm.
Et étant sorti, il vit une foule nombreuse, et il fut ému de compassion envers elle, et il guérit leurs malades.
15 But when even was come, his disciples came to him saying, The place is desert, and [much of] the [day] time already gone by; dismiss the crowds, that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.
Mais, le soir étant venu, les disciples s'approchèrent de lui en disant: « Ce lieu est désert, et l'heure est déjà avancée, renvoie la foule, afin qu'elle se rende dans les villages pour s'y acheter des vivres, »
16 But Jesus said to them, They have no need to go: give ye them to eat.
Or Jésus leur dit: « Ils n'ont pas besoin de s'en aller, donnez-leur vous-mêmes à manger. »
17 But they say to him, We have not here save five loaves and two fishes.
Mais ils lui disent: « Nous n'avons ici que cinq pains et deux poissons. »
18 And he said, Bring them here to me.
Et il dit: « Apportez-les-moi ici,
19 And having commanded the crowds to recline upon the grass, having taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed: and having broken the loaves, he gave [them] to the disciples, and the disciples [gave them] to the crowds.
et ordonnez à la foule de s'asseoir sur l'herbe. » Après avoir pris les cinq pains et les deux poissons, il prononça, en levant les yeux vers le ciel, une bénédiction; et après les avoir rompus, il donna les pains à ses disciples et les disciples à la foule.
20 And all ate and were filled, and they took up what was over and above of fragments twelve hand-baskets full.
Et tous mangèrent et furent rassasiés; et on emporta le surplus des morceaux dans douze corbeilles pleines.
21 But those that had eaten were about five thousand men, besides women and children.
Or, ceux qui mangèrent étaient environ cinq mille hommes, sans compter les femmes et les petits enfants.
22 And immediately he compelled the disciples to go on board ship, and to go on before him to the other side, until he should have dismissed the crowds.
Et aussitôt il contraignit ses disciples à monter dans une barque et à passer avant lui sur l'autre rive, jusques à ce qu'il eût renvoyé la foule.
23 And having dismissed the crowds, he went up into the mountain apart to pray. And when even was come, he was alone there,
Et, après avoir renvoyé la foule, il monta sur la montagne pour prier à l'écart. Mais, le soir étant venu, il se trouva seul en cet endroit.
24 but the ship was already in the middle of the sea tossed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.
Or, la barque était déjà éloignée de plusieurs stades de la terre, et elle était battue par les flots, car le vent était contraire.
25 But in the fourth watch of the night he went off to them, walking on the sea.
Mais à la quatrième veille de la nuit, il vint vers eux en marchant sur la mer.
26 And the disciples, seeing him walking on the sea, were troubled, saying, It is an apparition. And they cried out through fear.
Or les disciples, en le voyant marcher sur la mer, furent tout troublés, et ils se disaient: « C'est un fantôme, » et dans leur peur ils se mirent à crier.
27 But Jesus immediately spoke to them, saying, Take courage; it is I: be not afraid.
Mais Jésus leur parla aussitôt, en disant: « Courage, c'est moi; n'ayez pas peur. »
28 And Peter answering him said, Lord, if it be thou, command me to come to thee upon the waters.
Et Pierre lui répliqua: « Seigneur, si c'est toi, ordonne-moi de venir vers toi sur les eaux. »
29 And he said, Come. And Peter, having descended from the ship, walked upon the waters to go to Jesus.
Et il lui dit: « Viens. » Et Pierre, étant descendu de la barque, marcha sur les eaux et vint vers Jésus;
30 But seeing the wind strong he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, Lord, save me.
mais en voyant la violence du vent, il eut peur, et ayant commencé à s'enfoncer, il s'écria: « Seigneur, sauve-moi. »
31 And immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught hold of him, and says to him, O thou of little faith, why didst thou doubt?
Et aussitôt Jésus ayant étendu la main le saisit et lui dit: « Homme de peu de foi, pourquoi as-tu douté? »
32 And when they had gone up into the ship, the wind fell.
Et lorsqu'ils furent montés dans la barque, le vent tomba.
33 But those in the ship came and did homage to him, saying, Truly thou art God's Son.
Mais ceux qui étaient dans la barque l'adorèrent, en disant: « Tu es vraiment le fils de Dieu. »
34 And having crossed over they came to the land of Gennesaret.
Et ayant achevé leur traversée, ils touchèrent terre à Gennèsaret,
35 And when the men of that place recognised him, they sent to that whole country around, and they brought to him all that were ill,
et les gens de ce lieu-là l'ayant reconnu envoyèrent dans tout le pays circonvoisin, et on lui amena tous les malades,
36 and besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment; and as many as touched were made thoroughly well.
et ils le suppliaient de les laisser toucher seulement la frange de son manteau, et tous ceux qui la touchèrent furent guéris.
