Joshua 4

1 And it came to pass when the whole nation had completely gone over the Jordan, that Jehovah spoke to Joshua, saying,

Et lorsque tout le peuple eut achevé de passer le Jourdain, l'Éternel parla à Josué en ces termes:

2 Take you twelve men out of the people, one man out of every tribe,

Choisissez-vous dans le peuple douze hommes, un homme par Tribu,

3 and command them, saying, Take up hence out of the midst of the Jordan, from the place where the priests' feet stood firm, twelve stones, and carry them over with you, and lay them down in the lodging-place where ye shall lodge this night.

et donnez-leur cet ordre: D'ici, du lit du Jourdain, de la place même où les Prêtres se sont tenus de pied ferme, enlevez douze pierres que vous emporterez avec vous et déposerez à la station où vous passerez cette nuit.

4 And Joshua called the twelve men, whom he had appointed of the children of Israel, a man out of every tribe;

Et Josué manda les douze hommes qu'il désigna parmi les enfants d'Israël, un homme par Tribu,

5 and Joshua said to them, Pass before the ark of Jehovah your God into the midst of the Jordan, and lift up each of you a stone [and put it] upon his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel,

et Josué leur dit: Passez devant l'Arche de l'Éternel, votre Dieu, dans le lit du Jourdain et prenez chacun sur l'épaule une pierre, selon le nombre des Tribus des enfants d'Israël,

6 that this may be a sign in your midst. When your children ask hereafter, saying, What mean ye by these stones?

afin que cela reste comme une preuve parmi vous. Lorsque dans l'avenir vos fils vous interrogeront en disant: Quel sens ces pierres ont-elles pour vous?

7 then ye shall say to them, That the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of Jehovah; when it went through the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. And these stones shall be for a memorial unto the children of Israel for ever.

vous leur répondrez: Que les eaux du Jourdain ont suspendu leur cours devant l'Arche de l'Alliance de l'Éternel; lorsqu'elle traversa le Jourdain, les eaux du Jourdain ont suspendu leur cours; et ces pierres sont pour les enfants d'Israël un monument éternel.

8 And the children of Israel did so, as Joshua had commanded, and took up twelve stones out of the midst of the Jordan, as Jehovah had spoken to Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel; and they carried them over with them to the lodging-place, and laid them down there.

Et les enfants d'Israël se conformèrent à l'ordre de Josué, et ils enlevèrent douze pierres dans le lit du Jourdain, comme l'Éternel l'avait ordonné à Josué, d'après le nombre des Tribus des enfants d'Israël, et ils les transportèrent avec eux à la station, et les y déposèrent.

9 And twelve stones did Joshua set up in the midst of the Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests who bore the ark of the covenant had stood firm; and they are there to this day.

Josué érigea aussi douze pierres dans le lit du Jourdain à l'endroit où avaient posé les pieds des Prêtres, porteurs de l'Arche de l'Alliance, et elles y sont demeurées jusqu'aujourd'hui.

10 And the priests who bore the ark stood in the midst of the Jordan, until everything was finished that Jehovah had commanded Joshua to speak unto the people, according to all that Moses had commanded Joshua. And the people hasted and passed over.

Or les Prêtres qui portaient l'Arche, se tinrent dans le lit du Jourdain jusqu'après l'entière exécution de tout ce que l'Éternel avait ordonné à Josué de dire au peuple, en conformité de tout ce que Moïse avait prescrit à Josué. Et le peuple mit de la célérité à faire le trajet.

11 And it came to pass, when all the people had completely gone over, that the ark of Jehovah went over, and the priests, in the presence of the people.

Et quand tout le peuple eut achevé de passer, l'Arche de l'Éternel et les Prêtres passèrent aussi par devant le peuple.

12 And the children of Reuben, and the children of Gad, and the half tribe of Manasseh, went over in array before the children of Israel, as Moses had spoken to them.

Et les fils de Ruben et les fils de Gad et la demi-Tribu de Manassé passèrent armés en tête des enfants d'Israël, comme Moïse le leur avait prescrit.

13 About forty thousand armed for military service passed over before Jehovah to the war, unto the plains of Jericho.

Environ quarante mille hommes équipés militairement, passèrent devant l'Éternel pour faire la campagne dans les plaines de Jéricho.

14 On that day Jehovah magnified Joshua in the sight of all Israel; and they feared him, as they had feared Moses, all the days of his life.

En ce jour-là l'Éternel grandit Josué devant les yeux de tout Israël; et ils le respectèrent comme ils avaient respecté Moïse, tout le temps de sa vie.

15 And Jehovah spoke to Joshua, saying,

Et l'Éternel parla à Josué en ces termes:

16 Command the priests who bear the ark of the testimony, that they come up out of the Jordan.

Commande aux Prêtres portant l'Arche du Témoignage de sortir du Jourdain.

17 And Joshua commanded the priests, saying, Come up out of the Jordan.

Alors Josué fit aux Prêtres ce commandement: Sortez du Jourdain.

18 And it came to pass when the priests who bore the ark of the covenant of Jehovah had come up out of the midst of the Jordan, [when] the soles of the priests' feet were lifted up on to the dry land, that the waters of the Jordan returned to their place, and they flowed as previously, over all its banks.

Et lorsque les Prêtres, porteurs de l'Arche de l'Alliance de l'Éternel, quittèrent le lit du Jourdain et que la plante de leurs pieds se fut détachée et posa sur la terre ferme, les eaux du Jourdain rentrèrent dans leur lit, et coulèrent comme auparavant par-dessus toutes ses berges.

19 And the people came up out of the Jordan on the tenth of the first month, and encamped in Gilgal, on the eastern extremity of Jericho.

Et le peuple sortit du lit du Jourdain le dixième jour du premier mois, et il campa à Guilgal à la frontière orientale de Jéricho.

20 And those twelve stones which they had taken out of the Jordan did Joshua set up in Gilgal.

Et Josué érigea à Guilgal ces douze pierres qu'il avait tirées du Jourdain.

21 And he spoke to the children of Israel, saying, When your children hereafter ask their fathers, saying, What [mean] these stones?

Et il parla aux enfants d'Israël en ces termes: Lorsque dans l'avenir vos fils interrogeront leurs pères en disant: Qu'est-ce que ces pierres?

22 then ye shall let your children know, saying, On dry land did Israel come over this Jordan;

vous instruirez vos fils en disant: Israël a passé ce Jourdain par son lit mis à sec,

23 because Jehovah your God dried up the waters of the Jordan from before you, until ye had passed over, as Jehovah your God did to the Red sea, which he dried up from before us, until we had passed over;

parce que l'Éternel, votre Dieu, avait desséché les eaux du Jourdain devant vous jusqu'à ce que vous fussiez passés, ainsi que l'Éternel, votre Dieu, l'a fait à la Mer aux algues qu'il a mise à sec devant nous jusqu'à ce que nous fussions passés,

24 that all peoples of the earth might know the hand of Jehovah, that it is mighty; that ye might fear Jehovah your God continually.

afin que tous les peuples de la terre reconnaissent la main de l'Éternel qui est puissante, afin que vous craigniez l'Éternel, votre Dieu, dans tous les temps.
