Acts 7
1 And the high priest said, Are these things then so?
Mais le grand prêtre dit: « Ces choses sont-elles exactes? » —
2 And he said, Brethren and fathers, hearken. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charran,
Et il dit: « Frères et pères, écoutez: Le Dieu de la gloire est apparu à notre père Abraham, pendant qu'il se trouvait en Mésopotamie, avant de s'établir à Charran,
3 and said to him, Go out of thy land and out of thy kindred, and come into the land which I will shew thee.
et Il lui a dit: « Sors de ton pays et de ta famille, et rends-toi dans le pays que Je t'indiquerai. »
4 Then going out of the land of the Chaldeans he dwelt in Charran, and thence, after his father died, he removed him into this land in which ye now dwell.
Alors étant sorti du pays des Chaldéens il s'établit à Charran. De là, après que son père fut mort, il se transféra dans ce pays-ci que vous habitez maintenant,
5 And he did not give him an inheritance in it, not even what his foot could stand on; and promised to give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when he had no child.
et Il ne lui y donna point d'héritage, pas même de quoi poser son pied; et Il lui promit qu'il l'en mettrait en possession, ainsi que sa postérité après lui, quoiqu'il n'eût pas d'enfant.
6 And God spoke thus: His seed shall be a sojourner in a strange land, and they shall enslave them and evil entreat [them] four hundred years;
Or voici comment Dieu s'exprima: « Sa postérité vivra en étrangère dans un pays étranger, et on l'asservira et on la maltraitera pendant quatre cents ans;
7 and the nation to which they shall be in bondage will I judge, said God; and after these things they shall come forth and serve me in this place.
et la nation par laquelle ils auront été asservis, c'est Moi qui la jugerai, dit Dieu; et après cela ils sortiront et Me rendront un culte dans ce lieu-ci. »
8 And he gave to him [the] covenant of circumcision; and thus he begat Isaac and circumcised him the eighth day; and Isaac Jacob, and Jacob the twelve patriarchs.
Et Il lui donna l'alliance de la circoncision; et c'est ainsi qu'il engendra Isaac et qu'il le circoncit le huitième jour, et Isaac Jacob, et Jacob les douze patriarches.
9 And the patriarchs, envying Joseph, sold him away into Egypt. And God was with him,
Et les patriarches, jaloux de Joseph, le vendirent pour être emmené en Egypte; et Dieu était avec lui,
10 and delivered him out of all his tribulations, and gave him favour and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he appointed him chief over Egypt and all his house.
et Il le tira de toutes ses tribulations, et Il le dota de grâce et de sagesse en présence de Pharaon roi d'Egypte, et Il le plaça à la tête de l'Egypte et de toute cette maison.
11 But a famine came upon all the land of Egypt and Canaan, and great distress, and our fathers found no food.
Or il survint une famine dans toute l'Egypte et dans Chanaan, et une grande tribulation, et nos pères ne trouvaient pas de quoi subsister.
12 But Jacob, having heard of there being corn in Egypt, sent out our fathers first;
Mais Jacob, ayant appris qu'il y avait des vivres en Egypte, y envoya nos pères une première fois,
13 and the second time Joseph was made known to his brethren, and the family of Joseph became known to Pharaoh.
et, au second voyage, Joseph fut reconnu par ses frères, et la race de Joseph devint manifeste pour Pharaon.
14 And Joseph sent and called down to him his father Jacob and all [his] kindred, seventy-five souls.
Puis Joseph envoya chercher son père Jacob et toute sa famille, composée de soixante et quinze personnes.
15 And Jacob went down into Egypt and died, he and our fathers,
Or Jacob descendit, puis il mourut, lui et nos pères, »
16 and were carried over to Sychem and placed in the sepulchre which Abraham bought for a sum of money of the sons of Emmor the [father] of Sychem.
et ils furent transportés à Sichem, et déposés dans le sépulcre qu'Abraham avait acquis à prix d'argent des fils d'Emmor à Sichem.
17 But as the time of promise drew near which God had promised to Abraham, the people increased and multiplied in Egypt,
Mais, à mesure que s'approcha le temps de la promesse dont Dieu était convenu avec Abraham, le peuple s'accrut et se multiplia en Egypte,
18 until another king over Egypt arose who did not know Joseph.
jusques à ce que surgit pour régner sur l'Egypte un autre roi qui ne savait rien de Joseph;
19 He dealt subtilly with our race, and evil entreated the fathers, casting out their infants that they might not live.
ce roi, usant de ruse avec notre race, maltraita nos pères, afin de leur faire exposer leurs enfants pour qu'ils ne restassent pas en vie.
20 In which time Moses was born, and was exceedingly lovely, who was nourished three months in the house of his father.
Ce fut alors que naquit Moïse, et il était beau aux yeux de Dieu; il fut élevé pendant trois mois dans la maison de son père;
21 And when he was cast out, the daughter of Pharaoh took him up, and brought him up for herself [to be] for a son.
mais ayant été exposé, la fille de Pharaon s'en chargea et l'éleva pour elle-même comme un fils.
22 And Moses was instructed in all [the] wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was mighty in his words and deeds.
Et Moïse fut instruit dans toutes les branches de la sagesse des Égyptiens, et il était puissant par ses paroles et par ses œuvres.
23 And when a period of forty years was fulfilled to him, it came into his heart to look upon his brethren, the sons of Israel;
Mais, quand il eut atteint l'âge de quarante ans, il lui vint dans le cœur de visiter ses frères, fils d'Israël;
24 and seeing a certain one wronged, he defended [him], and avenged him that was being oppressed, smiting the Egyptian.
et en ayant vu un qui était maltraité, il prit sa défense, et vengea celui qui était terrassé, en frappant l'Égyptien.
25 For he thought that his brethren would understand that God by his hand was giving them deliverance. But they understood not.
Or il pensait que ses frères comprendraient que Dieu, par son moyen, leur procurait une délivrance; mais ils ne le comprirent pas.
26 And on the morrow he shewed himself to them as they were contending, and compelled them to peace, saying, Ye are brethren, why do ye wrong one another?
Et le jour suivant il se montra à eux comme ils se battaient, et il cherchait à les réconcilier pour qu'ils fissent la paix, en disant: « Vous êtes frères, pourquoi vous maltraitez-vous réciproquement? »
27 But he that was wronging his neighbour thrust him away, saying, Who established thee ruler and judge over us?
Mais celui qui maltraitait son prochain le repoussa en disant: « Qui est-ce qui t'a établi chef et juge sur nous?
28 Dost thou wish to kill me as thou killedst the Egyptian yesterday?
Veux-tu me tuer comme tu as tué hier l'Égyptien? »
29 And Moses fled at this saying, and became a sojourner in the land of Madiam, where he begat two sons.
Mais Moïse s'enfuit à ces mots et il vécut en étranger dans le pays de Madiam, où il engendra deux fils.
30 And when forty years were fulfilled, an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sinai, in a flame of fire of a bush.
Et, au bout de quarante ans, un ange lui apparut dans le désert du mont Sina dans la flamme d'un buisson en feu,
31 And Moses seeing it wondered at the vision; and as he went up to consider it, there was a voice of [the] Lord,
Et Moïse l'ayant vu fut étonné de cette apparition, et comme il s'approchait pour examiner, une voix du Seigneur se fit entendre:
32 I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob. And Moses trembled, and durst not consider [it].
« C'est Moi qui suis le Dieu de tes pères, le Dieu d'Abraham, et d'Isaac, et de Jacob! » Mais Moïse, saisi d'effroi, n'osait plus examiner.
33 And the Lord said to him, Loose the sandal of thy feet, for the place on which thou standest is holy ground.
Et le Seigneur lui dit: « Détache la chaussure de tes pieds, car le lieu où tu te trouves est une terre sainte;
34 I have surely seen the ill treatment of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groan, and have come down to take them out of it; and now, come, I will send thee to Egypt.
J'ai vu de Mes yeux l'oppression de Mon peuple en Egypte, et J'ai entendu ses gémissements, et Je suis descendu pour le délivrer; et maintenant va, Je t'enverrai en Egypte. »
35 This Moses, whom they refused, saying, Who made thee ruler and judge? him did God send [to be] a ruler and deliverer with the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush.
Ce Moïse, qu'ils avaient renié en disant: « Qui est-ce qui t'a établi chef et juge? » c'est lui que Dieu envoya comme chef et comme libérateur avec l'assistance de l'ange qui lui était apparu dans le buisson;
36 He led them out, having wrought wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red sea, and in the wilderness forty years.
c'est lui qui les fit sortir, en opérant des prodiges et des miracles en Egypte, et dans la mer Rouge, et dans le désert, pendant quarante ans.
37 This is the Moses who said to the sons of Israel, A prophet shall God raise up to you out of your brethren like me [him shall ye hear].
C'est ce Moïse qui a dit aux fils d'Israël: « Dieu vous suscitera d'entre vos frères un prophète comme moi; »
38 This is he who was in the assembly in the wilderness, with the angel who spoke to him in the mount Sinai, and with our fathers; who received living oracles to give to us;
c'est lui qui, dans l'assemblée au désert, a eu affaire avec l'ange qui lui parlait sur le mont Sina, et avec nos pères, lui qui avait été choisi pour vous donner de vivants oracles;
39 to whom our fathers would not be subject, but thrust [him] from them, and in their hearts turned back to Egypt,
c'est à lui que nos pères refusèrent d'obéir, mais ils le repoussèrent et ils tournèrent leurs cœurs vers l'Egypte,
40 saying to Aaron, Make us gods who shall go before us; for this Moses, who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we know not what has happened to him.
en disant à Aaron: « Fais-nous des dieux qui marcheront devant nous; car ce Moïse qui nous a fait sortir du pays d'Egypte, nous ne savons ce qui lui est advenu. »
41 And they made a calf in those days, and offered sacrifice to the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands.
Et ce fut alors qu'ils fabriquèrent un veau, et qu'ils offrirent un sacrifice à l'idole, et qu'ils se réjouissaient des œuvres de leurs mains.
42 But God turned and delivered them up to serve the host of heaven; as it is written in [the] book of the prophets, Have ye offered me victims and sacrifices forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?
Mais Dieu se détourna, et Il les livra au culte de l'armée du ciel, comme il est écrit dans le livre des prophètes: « Ne M'avez-vous pas offert des sacrifices et des offrandes dans le désert pendant quarante ans, ô maison d''Israël,
43 Yea, ye took up the tent of Moloch, and the star of [your] god Remphan, the forms which ye made to do homage to them; and I will transport you beyond Babylon.
en même temps que vous transportiez le tabernacle de Moloch et l'étoile du dieu Rompha, ces images que vous aviez faites pour les adorer? Eh bien, Je vous déporterai par delà Babylone. »
44 Our fathers had the tent of the testimony in the wilderness, as he that spoke to Moses commanded to make it according to the model which he had seen;
Le tabernacle du témoignage était, pour nos pères dans le désert, tel que Celui qui parlait à Moïse lui avait prescrit de le construire, d'après le modèle qu'il avait vu;
45 which also our fathers, receiving from their predecessors, brought in with Joshua when they entered into possession of [the lands of] the nations, whom God drove out from [the] face of our fathers, until the days of David;
nos pères, auxquels il fut transmis, l'introduisirent aussi avec Josué dans le pays conquis sur les nations que Dieu chassa de devant nos pères, jusques à l'époque de David,
46 who found favour before God, and asked to find a tabernacle for the God of Jacob;
qui obtint grâce devant Dieu et demanda de trouver une demeure pour la maison de Jacob;
47 but Solomon built him a house.
mais ce fut Salomon qui Lui bâtit une maison.
48 But the Most High dwells not in [places] made with hands; as says the prophet,
Toutefois le Très-Haut n'habite point dans des édifices faits de main d'homme, comme dit le prophète:
49 The heaven [is] my throne and the earth the footstool of my feet: what house will ye build me? saith [the] Lord, or where [is the] place of my rest?
« Le ciel est Mon trône, et la terre le marchepied de Mes pieds; quelle maison M'avez-vous bâtie, dit le Seigneur, ou quel est le lieu de Mon repos?
50 has not my hand made all these things?
N'est-ce pas Ma main qui a fait toutes ces choses? »
51 O stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers, ye also.
Hommes de col roide, et incirconcis du cœur et des oreilles, vous aussi vous résistez toujours à l'esprit saint, comme vos pères.
52 Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain those who announced beforehand concerning the coming of the Just One, of whom ye have now become deliverers up and murderers!
Quel prophète vos pères n'ont-ils pas persécuté? Et ils ont fait mourir ceux qui d'avance annonçaient la venue de ce juste envers lequel vous vous êtes montrés naguère traîtres et meurtriers,
53 who have received the law as ordained by [the] ministry of angels, and have not kept [it].
vous qui avez reçu la loi comme des commandements d'anges, et qui ne l'avez pas observée! »
54 And hearing these things they were cut to the heart, and gnashed their teeth against him.
En entendant ces paroles ils devenaient furieux en leurs cœurs et grinçaient des dents contre lui.
55 But being full of [the] Holy Spirit, having fixed his eyes on heaven, he saw [the] glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God,
Mais, étant lui-même rempli d'esprit saint et fixant ses regards sur le ciel, il vit la gloire de Dieu et Jésus debout à la droite de Dieu,
56 and said, Lo, I behold the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing at the right hand of God.
et il dit: « Voici, je vois les cieux ouverts et le fils de l'homme debout à la droite de Dieu. »
57 And they cried out with a loud voice, and held their ears, and rushed upon him with one accord;
Poussant alors de grands cris ils se bouchèrent les oreilles, puis ils se précipitèrent tous ensemble sur lui,
58 and having cast [him] out of the city, they stoned [him]. And the witnesses laid aside their clothes at the feet of a young man called Saul.
et, l'ayant jeté hors de la ville, ils le lapidaient. Et les témoins déposèrent leurs manteaux aux pieds d'un jeune homme appelé Saul,
59 And they stoned Stephen, praying, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.
et ils lapidaient Etienne, qui disait dans son invocation: « Seigneur Jésus, reçois mon esprit! »
60 And kneeling down, he cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And having said this, he fell asleep.
Puis, s'étant mis à genoux, il s'écria à haute voix: « Seigneur, ne leur impute point ce péché! » Et après ces mots il mourut.
