Acts 6
1 But in those days, the disciples multiplying in number, there arose a murmuring of the Hellenists against the Hebrews because their widows were overlooked in the daily ministration.
Or en ce temps-là, comme le nombre des disciples s'augmentait, il y eut des plaintes des Hellénistes contre les Hébreux, parce que leurs veuves étaient négligées dans le service journalier.
2 And the twelve, having called the multitude of the disciples to [them], said, It is not right that we, leaving the word of God, should serve tables.
Et les douze, ayant convoqué la multitude des disciples, dirent: « Il ne convient pas que nous abandonnions la parole de Dieu pour servir aux tables;
3 Look out therefore, brethren, from among yourselves seven men, well reported of, full of [the] [Holy] Spirit and wisdom, whom we will establish over this business:
mais recherchons, frères, sept hommes d'entre vous, qui aient l'approbation générale et soient remplis d'esprit et de sagesse, auxquels nous remettrons cette besogne;
4 but we will give ourselves up to prayer and the ministry of the word.
pour nous, nous vaquerons à la prière et au service de la parole. »
5 And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and [the] Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas, a proselyte of Antioch,
Et la proposition trouva faveur auprès de toute la multitude, et ils élurent Etienne, homme rempli de foi et d'esprit saint, et Philippe, et Prochore, et Nicanor, et Timon, et Parménas, et Nicolas prosélyte d'Antioche,
6 whom they set before the apostles; and, having prayed, they laid their hands on them.
qu'ils présentèrent aux apôtres; et, après avoir prié, ils leur imposèrent les mains.
7 And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples in Jerusalem was very greatly multiplied, and a great crowd of the priests obeyed the faith.
Et la parole de Dieu prospérait, et le nombre des disciples s'accroissait beaucoup à Jérusalem, et une grande foule de prêtres embrassaient la foi.
8 And Stephen, full of grace and power, wrought wonders and great signs among the people.
Cependant Etienne, rempli de grâce et de puissance, faisait de grands prodiges et de grands miracles parmi le peuple.
9 And there arose up certain of those of the synagogue called of freedmen, and of Cyrenians, and of Alexandrians, and of those of Cilicia and Asia, disputing with Stephen.
Mais quelques membres de la synagogue dite des Affranchis, et de celles des Cyrénéens et des Alexandrins, et de Cilicie et d'Asie, entamèrent une discussion avec Etienne,
10 And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the Spirit with which he spoke.
et ils ne pouvaient résister à la sagesse et à l'esprit avec lesquels il parlait.
11 Then they suborned men, saying, We have heard him speaking blasphemous words against Moses and God.
Alors ils subornèrent des hommes qui dirent: « Nous l'avons entendu proférer des paroles blasphématoires contre Moïse et contre Dieu; »
12 And they roused the people, and the elders, and the scribes. And coming upon [him] they seized him and brought [him] to the council.
et ils émurent le peuple, ainsi que les anciens et les scribes, et s'étant jetés sur lui, ils l'entraînèrent et l'amenèrent dans le sanhédrin,
13 And they set false witnesses, saying, This man does not cease speaking words against the holy place and the law;
et ils produisirent de faux témoins qui dirent: « Cet homme-ci ne cesse de proférer des paroles contre ce lieu saint et contre la loi;
14 for we have heard him saying, This Jesus the Nazaraean shall destroy this place, and change the customs which Moses taught us.
car nous l'avons entendu dire que ce Jésus le Nazoréen détruira ce lieu, et changera les coutumes que nous a transmises Moïse. »
15 And all who sat in the council, looking fixedly on him, saw his face as [the] face of an angel.
Et ayant fixé leurs regards sur lui, tous ceux qui étaient assis dans le sanhédrin virent que son visage ressemblait au visage d'un ange.
