1 Timothy 5
1 Rebuke not an elder sharply, but exhort [him] as a father, younger [men] as brethren,
Älä nuhtele kovasti vanhaa miestä, vaan neuvo niinkuin isää, nuorempia niinkuin veljiä,
2 elder women as mothers, younger women as sisters, with all purity.
vanhoja naisia niinkuin äitejä, nuorempia niinkuin sisaria, kaikessa puhtaudessa.
3 Honour widows who are really widows;
Kunnioita leskiä, jotka ovat oikeita leskiä.
4 but if any widow have children or descendants, let them learn first to be pious as regards their own house, and to render a return on their side to [their] parents; for this is acceptable in the sight of God.
Mutta jos jollakin leskellä on lapsia tai lapsenlapsia, oppikoot nämä ensin hurskaasti hoitamaan omaa perhekuntaansa ja maksamaan, mitä ovat velkaa vanhemmilleen, sillä se on otollista Jumalan edessä.
5 Now she who [is] a widow indeed, and is left alone, has put [her] hope in God, and continues in supplications and prayers night and day.
Oikea leski ja yksinäiseksi jäänyt panee toivonsa Jumalaan ja anoo ja rukoilee alinomaa, yötä päivää;
6 But she that lives in habits of self-indulgence is dead [while] living.
mutta hekumoitseva on jo eläessään kuollut.
7 And these things enjoin, that they may be irreproachable.
Teroita tätäkin, että he olisivat nuhteettomat.
8 But if any one does not provide for his own, and specially for those of [his] house, he has denied the faith, and is worse than the unbeliever.
Mutta jos joku ei pidä huolta omaisistaan ja varsinkaan ei perhekuntalaisistaan, niin hän on kieltänyt uskon ja on uskotonta pahempi.
9 Let a widow be put upon the list, being of not less than sixty years, [having been] wife of one man,
Luetteloon otettakoon ainoastaan semmoinen leski, joka ei ole kuuttakymmentä vuotta nuorempi ja joka on ollut yhden miehen vaimo,
10 borne witness to in good works, if she have brought up children, if she have exercised hospitality, if she have washed saints' feet, if she have imparted relief to the distressed, if she have diligently followed every good work.
josta on todistettu, että hän on tehnyt hyviä töitä, on lapsia kasvattanut, vieraita holhonnut, pyhien jalkoja pessyt, ahdistettuja auttanut ja kaiken hyvän tekemistä harrastanut.
11 But younger widows decline; for when they grow wanton against Christ, they desire to marry,
Mutta nuoret lesket hylkää; sillä kun he himokkaiksi käyden vieraantuvat Kristuksesta, tahtovat he mennä naimisiin,
12 being guilty, because they have cast off their first faith.
ja ovat tuomion alaisia, koska ovat ensimmäisen uskonsa hyljänneet.
13 And, at the same time, they learn also [to be] idle, going about to people's houses; and not only idle, but also gossipers and meddlers, speaking things not becoming.
He oppivat kylää kierrellessään vielä laiskoiksikin, eikä ainoastaan laiskoiksi, vaan myös juoruisiksi ja monitouhuisiksi ja sopimattomia puhumaan.
14 I will therefore that the younger marry, bear children, rule the house, give no occasion to the adversary in respect of reproach.
Minä tahdon sentähden, että nuoret lesket menevät naimisiin, synnyttävät lapsia, hoitavat kotiansa eivätkä anna vastustajalle mitään aihetta solvaamiseen.
15 For already some have turned aside after Satan.
Sillä muutamat ovat jo kääntyneet pois seuraamaan saatanaa.
16 If any believing man or woman have widows, let them impart relief to them, and let not the assembly be charged, that it may impart relief to those [that are] widows indeed.
Jos jollakin uskovaisella naisella on leskiä, niin pitäköön niistä huolen, älköönkä seurakuntaa rasitettako, että se voisi pitää huolta oikeista leskistä.
17 Let the elders who take the lead [among the saints] well be esteemed worthy of double honour, specially those labouring in word and teaching;
Vanhimpia, jotka seurakuntaa hyvin hoitavat, pidettäköön kahdenkertaisen kunnian ansainneina, varsinkin niitä, jotka sanassa ja opetuksessa työtä tekevät.
18 for the scripture says, Thou shalt not muzzle an ox that treadeth out corn, and, The workman [is] worthy of his hire.
Sillä Raamattu sanoo: "Älä sido puivan härän suuta", ja: "Työmies on palkkansa ansainnut".
19 Against an elder receive not an accusation unless where there are two or three witnesses.
Älä ota huomioosi syytettä vanhinta vastaan, ellei ole kahta tai kolmea todistajaa.
20 Those that sin convict before all, that the rest also may have fear.
Syntiä tekeviä nuhtele kaikkien kuullen, että muutkin pelkäisivät.
21 I testify before God and Christ Jesus and the elect angels, that thou keep these things without prejudice, doing nothing by favour.
Minä vannotan sinua Jumalan ja Kristuksen Jeesuksen ja valittujen enkelien edessä, että noudatat tätä, tekemättä ennakolta päätöstä ja ketään suosimatta.
22 Lay hands quickly on no man, nor partake in others' sins. Keep thyself pure.
Älä ole liian kerkeä panemaan käsiäsi kenenkään päälle, äläkä antaudu osalliseksi muiden synteihin. Pidä itsesi puhtaana.
23 Drink no longer only water, but use a little wine on account of thy stomach and thy frequent illnesses.
Älä enää juo vain vettä, vaan käytä vähän viiniä vatsasi tähden ja usein uudistuvien vaivojesi vuoksi.
24 Of some men the sins are manifest beforehand, going before to judgment, and some also they follow after.
Muutamien ihmisten synnit ovat ilmeiset ja joutuvat ennen tuomittaviksi, toisten taas seuraavat jäljestäpäin;
25 In like manner good works also are manifest beforehand, and those that are otherwise cannot be hid.
samoin myös hyvät teot ovat ilmeiset, eivätkä nekään, jotka eivät ole ilmeisiä, voi salassa pysyä.
