1 Kings 18
1 And it came to pass after many days, that the word of Jehovah came to Elijah in the third year, saying, Go, shew thyself to Ahab; and I will send rain upon the face of the earth.
Après beaucoup de jours, la parole de Yahweh fut adressée à Elie, dans la troisième année, en ces termes: « Va, parais devant Achab, et je ferai tomber de la pluie sur la face du sol. »
2 And Elijah went to shew himself to Ahab. And the famine was severe in Samaria.
Et Elie partit, pour se présenter devant Achab. La famine était devenue grande à Samarie,
3 And Ahab called Obadiah, who was the steward of his house (now Obadiah feared Jehovah greatly;
Achab fit appeler Abdias, chef de sa maison. — Or Abdias craignait beaucoup Yahweh,
4 and it was so, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of Jehovah, that Obadiah took a hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and maintained them with bread and water);
car, lorsque Jézabel massacra les prophètes de Yahweh, Abdias prit cent prophètes et les cacha cinquante par cinquante dans des cavernes, où il les nourrit de pain et d’eau. —
5 and Ahab said to Obadiah, Go through the land, to all the fountains of water and to all the torrents, perhaps we may find grass to save the horses and the mules alive, so that we may not have to destroy some of [our] beasts.
Achab dit à Abdias: « Va par le pays vers toutes les sources d’eau et vers tous les torrents; peut-être se trouvera-t-il de l’herbe, et nous conserverons la vie aux chevaux et aux mulets, et nous n’aurons pas à abattre de bétail. »
6 And they divided the land between them to pass through it: Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by himself.
Ils se partagèrent le pays pour le parcourir; Achab alla seul par un chemin, et Abdias alla seul par un autre chemin.
7 And as Obadiah was on the way, behold, Elijah met him; and he knew him, and fell on his face, and said, Is it indeed thou, my lord Elijah?
Comme Abdias était en route, voici qu’Elie le rencontra. Abdias, l’ayant reconnu, tomba sur son visage et dit: « Est-ce toi, mon seigneur Elie? »
8 And he said to him, I [am he]: go, say to thy lord, Behold Elijah!
Il lui répondit: « C’est moi; va dire à ton maître: Voici Elie! »
9 And he said, What have I sinned, that thou givest thy servant into the hand of Ahab, to put me to death?
Et Abdias dit: « Quel péché ai-je commis, que tu livres ton serviteur entre les mains d’Achab, pour qu’il me fasse mourir?
10 As Jehovah thy God liveth, there is no nation or kingdom whither my lord has not sent to seek thee; and when they said, He is not [here], he took an oath of the kingdom or nation that they found thee not.
Yahweh, ton Dieu, est vivant! Il n’y a ni nation ni royaume où mon maître n’ait envoyé pour te chercher; et quand on disait: Elie n’est pas ici, il faisait jurer le royaume et la nation qu’on ne t’avait pas trouvé.
11 And now thou sayest, Go, say to thy lord, Behold Elijah!
Et maintenant tu me dis: Va dire à ton maître: Voici Elie!
12 And it shall come to pass when I am gone from thee, that the Spirit of Jehovah shall carry thee whither I know not; and when I come and tell Ahab, and he cannot find thee, he will kill me; and I thy servant fear Jehovah from my youth.
Et lorsque je t’aurai quitté, l’Esprit de Yahweh te transportera je ne sais où; et j’irai informer Achab, qui ne te trouvera pas et me tuera. Cependant ton serviteur craint Yahweh dès sa jeunesse.
13 Was it not told my lord what I did when Jezebel slew the prophets of Jehovah, how I hid a hundred men of Jehovah's prophets by fifty in a cave, and maintained them with bread and water?
N’a-t-on pas dit à mon seigneur ce que j’ai fait quand Jézabel a massacré les prophètes de Yahweh? J’ai caché cent des prophètes de Yahweh, cinquante par cinquante, dans des cavernes, et je les ai nourris de pain et d’eau.
14 And now thou sayest, Go, say to thy lord, Behold Elijah! and he will kill me.
Et maintenant tu dis: Va dire à ton maître: Voici Elie! Il me tuera. »
15 And Elijah said, As Jehovah of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, I will certainly shew myself to him to-day.
Mais Elie dit: « Yahweh des armées, devant qui je me tiens, est vivant! Aujourd’hui je me présenterai devant Achab. »
16 Then Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him. And Ahab went to meet Elijah.
Abdias alla à la rencontre d’Achab et lui apprit la nouvelle; et Achab se rendit au-devant d’Elie.
17 And it came to pass when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said to him, Is it thou, the troubler of Israel?
Dès qu’Achab aperçut Elie, Achab lui dit: « Toi ici, le perturbateur d’Israël? »
18 And he said, I have not troubled Israel, but thou and thy father's house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of Jehovah, and thou hast followed the Baals.
Elie répondit: « Je ne trouble pas Israël; c’est toi, au contraire, et la maison de ton père, en ce que vous avez abandonné les commandements de Yahweh et que tu es allé après les Baals.
19 And now send, gather to me all Israel to mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the Asherah four hundred, who eat at Jezebel's table.
Maintenant, envoie rassembler tout Israël auprès de moi, à la montagne du Carmel, ainsi que les quatre cent cinquante prophètes de Baal et les quatre cents prophètes d’Astarté, qui mangent de la table de Jézabel. »
20 So Ahab sent to all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together unto mount Carmel.
Achab envoya des messagers vers tous les enfants d’Israël, et rassembla les prophètes à la montagne du Carmel.
21 Then Elijah drew near to all the people, and said, How long do ye halt between two opinions? if Jehovah be God, follow him; and if Baal, follow him. And the people answered him not a word.
Alors Elie s’approcha de tout le peuple et dit: « Jusques à quand clocherez-vous des deux côtés? Si Yahweh est Dieu, allez après lui; si c’est Baal, allez après lui! » Le peuple ne lui répondit rien.
22 And Elijah said to the people, I, only I, remain a prophet of Jehovah; and Baal's prophets are four hundred and fifty men.
Et Elie dit au peuple: « Je suis resté seul des prophètes de Yahweh, et il y a quatre cent cinquante prophètes de Baal.
23 Let them therefore give us two bullocks: and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and put it on the wood, and put no fire; and I will sacrifice the other bullock, and put it on the wood, and put no fire.
Que l’on nous donne deux taureaux; qu’ils choisissent pour eux l’un des taureaux, qu’ils le coupent par morceaux et qu’ils le placent sur le bois, sans y mettre le feu; et moi je préparerai l’autre taureau, et je le placerai sur le bois, sans y mettre le feu.
24 And call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of Jehovah; and the god that answers by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, The word is good.
Puis invoquez le nom de votre dieu, et moi j’invoquerai le nom de Yahweh. Le dieu qui répondra par le feu, celui-là est Dieu. » Tout le peuple répondit en disant: « C’est bien! »
25 And Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, Choose one bullock for yourselves, and sacrifice it first; for ye are the many; and call on the name of your god, but put no fire.
Elie dit aux prophètes de Baal: « Choisissez pour vous l’un des taureaux, préparez-le d’abord, car vous êtes les plus nombreux, et invoquez le nom de votre dieu, mais ne mettez pas le feu. »
26 And they took the bullock which had been given them, and sacrificed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning until noon, saying, O Baal, answer us! But there was no voice, and none answered. And they leaped about the altar that had been made.
Ils prirent le taureau qu’on leur donna et le préparèrent; et ils invoquèrent le nom de Baal depuis le matin jusqu’à midi, en disant: « Baal, réponds-nous! » Mais il n’y eut ni voix ni réponse. Et ils sautaient devant l’autel qu’ils avaient fait.
27 And it came to pass at noon that Elijah mocked them and said, Cry aloud; for he is a god; for he is meditating, or gone aside, or he is on a journey; perhaps he sleeps, and will awake.
A midi, Elie se moqua d’eux et dit: « Criez à haute voix, car il est dieu; il est en méditation, ou il est occupé, ou il est en voyage; peut-être qu’il dort, et il se réveillera. »
28 And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with swords and spears, till the blood gushed out upon them.
Et ils crièrent à haute voix, et ils se firent, selon leur coutume, des incisions avec des épées et avec des lances, jusqu’à ce que le sang coulât sur eux.
29 And it came to pass when midday was past, that they prophesied until the [time] of the offering up of the oblation; but there was neither voice, nor any that answered, nor any attention.
Lorsque midi fut passé, ils prophétisèrent jusqu’au moment où l’on présente l’oblation. Mais il n’y eut ni voix, ni réponse, ni signe d’attention.
30 Then Elijah said to all the people, Draw near to me. And all the people drew near to him. And he repaired the altar of Jehovah which was broken down.
Elie dit à tout le peuple: « Approchez-vous de moi. » Tout le peuple s’étant approché de lui, Elie rétablit l’autel de Yahweh, qui avait été renversé.
31 And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of Jehovah came saying, Israel shall be thy name;
Elie prit douze pierres, d’après le nombre des tribus des fils de Jacob, auquel la parole de Yahweh avait été adressée en ces termes: « Israël sera ton nom. »
32 and with the stones he built an altar in the name of Jehovah, and made a trench round about the altar, of the capacity of two measures of seed;
Il bâtit avec ces pierres un autel au nom de Yahweh; puis, ayant fait autour de l’autel un fossé de la capacité de deux mesures de semence,
33 and he put the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid it on the wood. And he said, Fill four pitchers with water, and pour it on the burnt-offering, and on the wood.
il arrangea le bois, coupa le taureau par morceaux et le plaça sur le bois.
34 And he said, Do it the second time. And they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time. And they did it the third time.
Et il dit: « Remplissez d’eau quatre cruches, et versez-les sur l’holocauste et sur le bois. » Il dit: « Faites-le une seconde fois »; et ils le firent une seconde fois. Il dit: « Faites le une troisième fois »; et ils le firent une troisième fois.
35 And the water ran round about the altar; and he filled the trench also with water.
L’eau coula autour de l’autel, et il fit remplir aussi d’eau le fossé.
36 And it came to pass at [the time of] the offering up of the oblation, that Elijah the prophet drew near, and said, Jehovah, God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things by thy word.
A l’heure où l’on offre l’oblation du soir, Elie, le prophète, s’avança et dit: « Yahweh, Dieu d’Abraham, d’Isaac et d’Israël, que l’on sache aujourd’hui que vous êtes Dieu en Israël, que je suis votre serviteur et que j’ai fait toutes ces choses sur votre parole.
37 Answer me, Jehovah, answer me, that this people may know that thou Jehovah art God, and [that] thou hast turned their heart back again.
Exaucez-moi, Yahweh, exaucez-moi! Afin que ce peuple reconnaisse que vous, Yahweh, êtes Dieu, et que c’est vous qui ramenez leur cœur en arrière. »
38 And the fire of Jehovah fell, and consumed the burnt-offering, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.
Alors le feu de Yahweh tomba, et il consuma l’holocauste, le bois, les pierres et la terre, et absorba l’eau qui était dans le fossé.
39 And all the people saw [it], and they fell on their faces and said, Jehovah, he is God! Jehovah, he is God!
Quand tout le peuple vit cela, ils tombèrent sur leur visage et ils dirent: « C’est Yahweh qui est Dieu! C’est Yahweh qui est Dieu! »
40 And Elijah said to them, Seize the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape! And they seized them; and Elijah brought them down to the torrent of Kishon, and slaughtered them there.
Et Elie leur dit: « Saisissez les prophètes de Baal; que pas un d’eux n’échappe! » Ils les saisirent, et Elie les fit descendre au torrent de Cison, où il les tua.
41 And Elijah said to Ahab, Go up, eat and drink; for there is a sound of abundance of rain.
Elie dit à Achab: « Monte, mange et bois; car j’entends le bruissement de la pluie. »
42 And Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he bowed down on the earth, and put his face between his knees.
Achab monta pour manger et pour boire; mais Elie monta au sommet du Carmel et, se penchant vers la terre, il mit son visage entre ses genoux,
43 And he said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up and looked, and said, [There is] nothing. And he said, Go again seven times.
et il dit à son serviteur: « Monte, regarde du côté de la mer. » Le serviteur monta et, ayant regardé, il dit: « Il n’y a rien. » Et Elie dit: « Retourne sept fois. »
44 And it came to pass at the seventh time that he said, Behold there is a cloud, small as a man's hand, arising out of the sea. And he said, Go up, say to Ahab, Harness and go down, that the pour of rain stop thee not.
A la septième fois, il dit: « Voici un petit nuage, comme la paume de la main d’un homme, qui s’élève de la mer. » Et Elie dit: « Va dire à Achab: Attelle et descends, afin que la pluie ne te surprenne pas. »
45 And it came to pass in the mean while, that the heavens became black [with] clouds and wind, and there was a great pour of rain. And Ahab got on the chariot, and went to Jizreel.
En peu de temps, le ciel fut assombri par les nuages et le vent, et il tomba une forte pluie; et Achab, monté sur son char, s’en retourna à Jezrahel.
46 And the hand of Jehovah was upon Elijah; and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jizreel.
Et la main de Yahweh fut sur Elie; il se ceignit les reins et courut devant Achab, jusqu’à l’entrée de Jezrahel.
