John 6
1 After these things, Jesus traveled across the sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias.
Jésus s'en alla ensuite de l'autre côté de la mer de Tibériade en Galilée;
2 And a great multitude was following him, for they saw the signs that he was accomplishing toward those who were infirm.
et une foule nombreuse le suivait, parce qu'elle voyait les miracles qu'il opérait sur les malades.
3 Therefore, Jesus went onto a mountain, and he sat down there with his disciples.
Jésus monta sur la montagne, et s'y assit avec ses disciples.
4 Now the Passover, the feast day of the Jews, was near.
Or, la Pâque, la grande fête des Juifs, était proche.
5 And so, when Jesus had lifted up his eyes and had seen that a very great multitude came to him, he said to Philip, “From where should we buy bread, so that these may eat?”
Jésus donc ayant levé les yeux, et voyant qu'une grande foule se dirigeait de son côté, dit à Philippe: «où nous faut-il acheter du pain, pour que ces gens aient à manger?»
6 But he said this to test him. For he himself knew what he would do.
Il disait cela pour l'éprouver; car, pour lui, il savait bien ce qu'il voulait faire.
7 Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii of bread would not be sufficient for each of them to receive even a little.”
Philippe lui répondit: «Deux cents deniers de pain ne suffiraient pas pour en donner un peu à chacun.»
8 One of his disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, said to him:
Un de ses disciples, André, frère de Simon-Pierre, lui dit:
9 “There is a certain boy here, who has five barley loaves and two fish. But what are these among so many?”
«Il y a ici un petit garçon qui a cinq pains d'orge et deux poissons; mais qu'est-ce que cela pour tant de monde.»
10 Then Jesus said, “Have the men sit down to eat.” Now, there was much grass in that place. And so the men, in number about five thousand, sat down to eat.
Jésus dit: «Faites asseoir ces gens.» Or il y avait une grande étendue d'herbe en ce lieu. Les hommes s'assirent donc: ils étaient au nombre d'environ cinq mille.
11 Therefore, Jesus took the bread, and when he had given thanks, he distributed it to those who were sitting down to eat; similarly also, from the fish, as much as they wanted.
Jésus prit les pains, et, ayant rendu grâces, il les distribua à ceux qui étaient assis; il leur donna de même des poissons, autant qu'ils en voulurent.
12 Then, when they were filled, he said to his disciples, “Gather the fragments that are left over, lest they be lost.”
Lorsqu'ils furent rassasiés, il dit à ses disciples: «Ramassez les morceaux qui restent, afin que rien ne se perde.»
13 And so they gathered, and they filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which were left over from those who had eaten.
Ils les ramassèrent, et remplirent douze corbeilles des morceaux qui restèrent des cinq pains d'orge, après que l'on eut mangé.
14 Therefore, those men, when they had seen that Jesus had accomplished a sign, they said, “Truly, this one is the Prophet who is to come into the world.”
Ces gens ayant vu le miracle que Jésus avait fait, disaient: «C'est vraiment le prophète qui doit venir dans le monde.»
15 And so, when he realized that they were going to come and take him away and make him king, Jesus fled back to the mountain, by himself alone.
Alors Jésus ayant compris qu'ils allaient venir l'enlever pour le faire roi, se retira de nouveau dans la montagne, tout seul.
16 Then, when evening arrived, his disciples descended to the sea.
Quand le soir fut venu, ses disciples descendirent au bord de la mer;
17 And when they had climbed into a boat, they went across the sea to Capernaum. And darkness had now arrived, and Jesus had not returned to them.
et, étant entrés dans la barque, ils traversèrent la mer dans la direction de Capernaoum. Il faisait déjà nuit, et Jésus ne les avait pas rejoints;
18 Then the sea was stirred up by a great wind that was blowing.
et un gros vent s'étant levé, la mer était agitée.
19 And so, when they had rowed about twenty-five or thirty stadia, they saw Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing near to the boat, and they were afraid.
Quand ils eurent fait de vingt-cinq à trente stades, ils virent Jésus marchant sur la mer, près de la barque, et ils eurent peur.
20 But he said to them: “It is I. Do not be afraid.”
Mais Jésus leur dit: «C'est moi, n'ayez point de peur.»
21 Therefore, they were willing to receive him into the boat. But immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.
Ils se disposèrent donc à le prendre dans la barque, et aussitôt la barque aborda au lieu où ils se rendaient.
22 On the next day, the crowd which was standing across the sea saw that there were no other small boats in that place, except one, and that Jesus had not entered into the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had departed alone.
La foule qui était restée de l'autre côté de la mer avait vu qu'il n'y avait là qu'une seule barque, et que Jésus n'y était point entré avec ses disciples, mais que ceux-ci étaient partis seuls.
23 Yet truly, other boats came over from Tiberias, next to the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord gave thanks.
Cependant il était arrivé de Tibériade d'autres barques, près du lieu où ils avaient mangé le pain, après que le Seigneur eut rendu grâces.
24 Therefore, when the crowd had seen that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they climbed into the small boats, and they went to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.
Le lendemain donc, lorsqu'ils virent que Jésus n'était pas là, non plus que ses disciples, ils entrèrent dans ces barques et se rendirent à Capernaoum pour chercher Jésus.
25 And when they had found him across the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?”
Et l'ayant trouvé de l'autre côté de la mer, ils lui dirent: «Maître, quand es-tu venu ici?»
26 Jesus answered them and said: “Amen, amen, I say to you, you seek me, not because you have seen signs, but because you have eaten from the bread and were satisfied.
Jésus leur répondit: «En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, vous me cherchez, non parce que vous avez vu des miracles, mais parce que vous avez mangé des pains, et que vous avez été rassasiés.
27 Do not work for food that perishes, but for that which endures to eternal life, which the Son of man will give to you. For God the Father has sealed him.” (aiōnios g166)
Travaillez pour avoir, non l'aliment qui périt, mais l'aliment qui subsiste en vie éternelle, et que le Fils de l'homme vous donnera, car c'est lui que le Père, savoir Dieu, a marqué de son sceau.» (aiōnios g166)
28 Therefore, they said to him, “What should we do, so that we may labor in the works of God?”
Ils lui dirent donc: «Que devons-nous faire, pour faire les oeuvres de Dieu?»
29 Jesus responded and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he sent.”
Jésus leur répondit: «L'oeuvre que Dieu demande, c'est que vous croyiez en celui qu'il a envoyé.»
30 And so they said to him: “Then what sign will you do, so that we may see it and believe in you? What will you work?
— Quel miracle fais-tu donc, lui dirent-ils, que nous le voyions, et que nous croyions en toi? Que fais-tu?
31 Our fathers ate manna in the desert, just as it has been written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’”
Nos pères ont mangé la manne au désert, ainsi qu'il est écrit: «Il leur donna à manger du pain du ciel.»
32 Therefore, Jesus said to them: “Amen, amen, I say to you, Moses did not give you bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven.
Jésus leur répondit: «En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, Moïse ne vous a point donné «le pain du ciel; » c'est mon Père qui vous donne le vrai pain du ciel,
33 For the bread of God is he who descends from heaven and gives life to the world.”
car le pain de Dieu, c'est le pain qui descend du ciel et qui donne la vie au monde.»
34 And so they said to him, “Lord, give us this bread always.”
Ils lui dirent donc: «Seigneur, donne-nous toujours de ce pain-là.»
35 Then Jesus said to them: “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.
Jésus leur dit: «Je suis le pain de vie: celui qui vient à moi n'aura jamais faim, et celui qui croit en moi n'aura jamais soif;
36 But I say to you, that even though you have seen me, you do not believe.
mais, je vous l'ai dit, vous m'avez vu, et vous ne croyez point.
37 All that the Father gives to me shall come to me. And whoever comes to me, I will not cast out.
Tout ce que le Père me donne viendra à moi, et je ne repousserai point celui qui vient à moi;
38 For I descended from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me.
car je suis descendu du ciel pour faire, non ma volonté, mais la volonté de celui qui m'a envoyé.
39 Yet this is the will of the Father who sent me: that I should lose nothing out of all that he has given to me, but that I should raise them up on the last day.
Or, la volonté de celui qui m'a envoyé, c'est que je ne perde aucun de ceux qu'il m'a donnés, mais que je les ressuscite au dernier jour.
40 So then, this is the will of my Father who sent me: that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.” (aiōnios g166)
Car c'est ici la volonté de mon Père, que quiconque voit le Fils et croit en lui, ait la vie éternelle; et moi je le ressusciterai au dernier jour.» (aiōnios g166)
41 Therefore, the Jews murmured about him, because he had said: “I am the living bread, who descended from heaven.”
Les Juifs se mirent donc à murmurer contre lui, parce qu'il avait dit: «Je suis le pain qui est descendu du ciel, »
42 And they said: “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? Then how can he say: ‘For I descended from heaven?’”
et ils disaient: «N'est-ce pas là Jésus, le fils de Joseph, dont nous connaissons le père et la mère? comment donc dit-il: «Je suis descendu du ciel?»
43 And so Jesus responded and said to them: “Do not choose to murmur among yourselves.
Jésus répondit et leur dit: «Ne murmurez point entre vous.
44 No one is able to come to me, unless the Father, who has sent me, has drawn him. And I will raise him up on the last day.
Nul ne peut venir à moi, si le Père, qui m'a envoyé, ne l'attire; et moi, je le ressusciterai au dernier jour.
45 It has been written in the Prophets: ‘And they shall all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has listened and learned from the Father comes to me.
Il est écrit dans les Prophètes: «Et ils seront tous enseignés de Dieu» quiconque a entendu le Père et a profité, vient à moi;
46 Not that anyone has seen the Father, except he who is from God; this one has seen the Father.
ce n'est pas que personne ait vu le Père, si ce n'est celui qui vient de Dieu: celui-là a vu le Père.
En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, celui qui croit en moi a la vie éternelle. (aiōnios g166)
48 I am the bread of life.
Je suis le pain de vie.
49 Your fathers ate manna in the desert, and they died.
Vos pères ont mangé la manne au désert, et ils sont morts;
50 This is the bread which descends from heaven, so that if anyone will eat from it, he may not die.
quant au pain qui descend du ciel, on en mange et l’on ne meurt point.
51 I am the living bread, who descended from heaven. If anyone eats from this bread, he shall live in eternity. And the bread that I will give is my flesh, for the life of the world.” (aiōn g165)
Je suis le pain vivifiant qui est descendu du ciel: si quelqu'un mange de ce pain, il vivra éternellement; et le pain que je donnerai, c'est ma chair, que je donnerai pour la vie du monde.» (aiōn g165)
52 Therefore, the Jews debated among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”
Là-dessus, les Juifs disputaient entre eux, disant: «Comment cet homme peut-il nous donner sa chair à manger?»
53 And so, Jesus said to them: “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you will not have life in you.
Jésus leur dit donc: «En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, si vous ne mangez la chair du Fils de l'homme, et si vous ne buvez son sang, vous n'avez point la vie en vous-mêmes:
54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. (aiōnios g166)
celui qui mange ma chair et qui boit mon sang a la vie éternelle; et moi, je le ressusciterai au dernier jour. (aiōnios g166)
55 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.
Car ma chair est vraiment une nourriture, et mon sang est vraiment un breuvage.
56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him.
Celui qui mange ma chair et qui boit mon sang demeure en moi, et moi en lui.
57 Just as the living Father has sent me and I live because of the Father, so also whoever eats me, the same shall live because of me.
Comme le Père, qui a la vie, m'a envoyé, et que je vis par le Père, de même celui qui me mange, vivra par moi.
58 This is the bread that descends from heaven. It is not like the manna that your fathers ate, for they died. Whoever eats this bread shall live forever.” (aiōn g165)
C'est là le pain qui est descendu du ciel: il n'en est point comme de nos pères qui ont mangé et sont morts; celui qui mange de ce pain vivra éternellement.» (aiōn g165)
59 He said these things when he was teaching in the synagogue at Capernaum.
Jésus dit ces choses, enseignant en pleine synagogue à Capernaoum.
60 Therefore, many of his disciples, upon hearing this, said: “This saying is difficult,” and, “Who is able to listen to it?”
Plusieurs de ses disciples, l'ayant entendu, dirent: «Cette parole est dure, qui peut l'écouter?»
61 But Jesus, knowing within himself that his disciples were murmuring about this, said to them: “Does this offend you?
Mais Jésus, sachant en lui-même que ses disciples murmuraient, leur dit: «Cela vous scandalise?...
62 Then what if you were to see the Son of man ascending to where he was before?
que sera-ce donc, si vous voyez le Fils de l’homme monter là où il était auparavant?
63 It is the Spirit who gives life. The flesh does not offer anything of benefit. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.
C'est l'esprit qui vivifie; la chair ne sert de rien. Les paroles que je vous ai adressées sont esprit et vie;
64 But there are some among you who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who were unbelieving and which one would betray him.
mais il y en a parmi vous qui ne croient point.» En effet, Jésus savait dès l'abord qui étaient ceux qui ne croyaient pas, et qui était celui qui le livrerait.
65 And so he said, “For this reason, I said to you that no one is able to come to me, unless it has been given to him by my Father.”
Et il ajouta: «C'est pour cela que je vous ai dit que nul ne peut venir à moi, s'il ne lui a été donné du Père.»
66 After this, many of his disciples went back, and they no longer walked with him.
Dès lors plusieurs de ses disciples se retirèrent d'auprès de lui et cessèrent de le suivre.
67 Therefore, Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also want to go away?”
Jésus dit donc aux Douze: «Et vous, ne voulez-vous pas aussi vous en aller?»
68 Then Simon Peter answered him: “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life. (aiōnios g166)
Simon-Pierre lui répondit: «Seigneur, à qui irions-nous? Tu as les paroles de la vie éternelle; (aiōnios g166)
69 And we have believed, and we recognize that you are the Christ, the Son of God.”
pour nous, nous avons cru et nous avons connu, que tu es le Saint de Dieu.»
70 Jesus answered them: “Have I not chosen you twelve? And yet one among you is a devil.”
Jésus leur répondit: «N'est-ce pas moi qui vous ai choisis, vous Douze?... et l'un de vous est un démon!»
71 Now he was speaking about Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. For this one, even though he was one of the twelve, was about to betray him.
Or il parlait de Judas, fils de Simon Iscariote, car c'était lui, l'un des Douze, qui devait le livrer.
