Jeremiah 6

1 “O sons of Benjamin, be strengthened in the midst of Jerusalem, and sound the trumpet in Tekoa, and lift up a banner over the house of Haccherem. For an evil has been seen from the north, with great destruction.

Enfants de Benjamin, fuyez vous-en [par troupes] du milieu de Jérusalem, et sonnez du cor à Tékoah, et élevez un signal de feu à Bethkérem; car le mal et une grande ruine a paru de l'Aquilon.

2 I have compared the daughter of Zion to a beautiful and delicate woman.

J'avais rendu la fille de Sion semblable à une femme qui ne bouge point de la maison, et qui est délicate.

3 The pastors will come to her with their flocks. They have pitched their tents against her all around. Each one will feed those who are under his hand.

Les pasteurs avec leurs troupeaux viendront contre elles, ils planteront leurs tentes autour d'elle, chacun paîtra en son quartier.

4 ‘Sanctify a war against her! Rise up together, and let us ascend at midday.’ ‘Woe to us! For the day has declined; for the shadows of the evening have grown longer.’

Préparez le combat contre elle, levez-vous, et montons en plein midi. Malheur à nous, car le jour décline, et les ombres du soir s'accroissent.

5 ‘Rise up, and let us ascend in the night, and let us destroy her houses.’”

Levez-vous, montons de nuit, et ruinons ses palais.

6 For thus says the Lord of hosts: “Cut down her trees, and build a rampart around Jerusalem. This is the city of visitation! Every kind of false claim is in her midst.

Car ainsi a dit l'Eternel des armées: coupez des arbres, et dressez des terrasses contre Jérusalem; c'est la ville qui doit être visitée, elle n'est tout entière que rapine au dedans.

7 Just as a cistern makes its water cold, so has she made her wickedness cold. Iniquity and devastation will be heard in her; sickness and wounds will be ever before me.

Comme le puits fait bouillonner ses eaux, ainsi elle fait bouillonner sa malice; on n'entend en elle devant moi continuellement que violence et que dégât, avec des maladies et des plaies.

8 O Jerusalem, accept instruction, lest perhaps my soul may withdraw from you; lest perhaps I may set you in a desert, in an uninhabitable land.”

Jérusalem, reçois instruction, de peur que mon affection ne se retire de toi, et que je ne fasse de toi un désert, [et] une terre inhabitable.

9 Thus says the Lord of hosts: “They will gather the remnant of Israel, even as a single cluster of grapes is gathered from a vine. Direct your hand, as a grape-gatherer directs his hand to the basket.

Ainsi a dit l'Eternel des armées: on grappillera entièrement comme une vigne les restes d'Israël; remets ta main dans les paniers comme un vendangeur.

10 To whom should I speak, and to whom should I testify, so as to be heard? Behold, their ears are uncircumcised, and so they are unable to hear. Behold, for them, the word of the Lord has become a disgrace. And so they will not accept it.

A qui parlerai-je, [et] qui sommerai-je, afin qu'ils écoutent? voici, leur oreille est incirconcise, et ils ne peuvent entendre; voici, la parole de l'Eternel leur est en opprobre, ils n'y prennent point de plaisir.

11 For this reason, I have been filled with the fury of the Lord. I labor to bear it. Let it be poured out upon the child outside, or upon a group of young men meeting together. For a man will be taken captive with a woman, an elder will be taken captive with one who is full of days.

C'est pourquoi je suis plein de la fureur de l'Eternel, et je suis las de la retenir, de sorte que je la répandrai sur les enfants par la rue, et sur l'assemblée des jeunes gens, même le mari sera pris avec la femme, et l'homme âgé avec celui qui est rassasié de jours.

12 And their houses will be given over to others, with both their lands and their wives. For I will extend my hand over the inhabitants of the earth, says the Lord.

Et leurs maisons retourneront aux étrangers, les champs, et les femmes aussi; car j'étendrai ma main sur les habitants du pays, dit l'Eternel.

13 Certainly, from the least of them even to the greatest, all of them practice greed. And from the prophet even to the priest, all of them act with deceit.

Parce que depuis le plus petit d'entre eux jusques au plus grand, chacun s'adonne au gain déshonnête, tant le Prophète que le Sacrificateur, tous se portent faussement.

14 And they healed the destruction of the daughter of my people with disgrace, by saying: ‘Peace, peace.’ And there was no peace.

Et ils ont pansé la froissure de la fille de mon peuple à la légère, disant: paix, paix; et il n'y avait point de paix.

15 They were confounded, because they committed an abomination. Or rather, they were not confounded with shame, because they did not know how to blush. For this reason, they will fall among those who are being destroyed. In the time of their visitation, they will fall, says the Lord.”

Ont-ils été confus de ce qu'ils ont commis des abominations? Ils n'en ont même eu aucune honte, et ils ne savent ce que c'est que de rougir; c'est pourquoi ils tomberont sur ceux qui seront tombés, ils tomberont au temps que je les visiterai, a dit l'Eternel.

16 Thus says the Lord: “Stand above the ways, and see and ask, about the ancient paths, as to which is the good way, and then walk in it. And you will find refreshment for your souls. But they said: ‘We will not walk.’

Ainsi a dit l'Eternel: tenez-vous sur les chemins, et regardez, et vous enquérez touchant les sentiers des siècles passés, quel est le bon chemin, et marchez-y, et vous trouverez le repos de vos âmes; et ils ont répondu: nous n'[y] marcherons point.

17 And I appointed watchers over you, saying: ‘Listen for the sound of the trumpet.’ And they said: ‘We will not listen.’

J'avais aussi établi sur vous des sentinelles [qui disent]: soyez attentifs au son de la trompette; mais on a répondu: nous n'[y] serons point attentifs.

18 For this reason, hear, O Gentiles, and know, O congregation, how much I will do to them.

Vous donc, nations, écoutez, et toi Assemblée, connais ce qui est entre eux.

19 Hear, O earth! Behold, I will lead evils over this people, as the fruits of their own thoughts. For they have not listened to my words, and they have cast aside my law.

Ecoute, terre: voici, je m'en vais faire venir un mal sur ce peuple, [savoir] le fruit de leurs pensées, parce qu'ils n'ont point été attentifs à mes paroles, et qu'ils ont rejeté ma Loi.

20 For what reason are you bringing me frankincense from Sheba, and sweet smelling reeds from a far away land? Your holocausts are not acceptable, and your sacrifices are not pleasing to me.”

Pourquoi m'offrir de l'encens venu de Seba, et le bon roseau aromatique du pays éloigné? vos holocaustes ne [me] plaisent point, et vos sacrifices ne me sont point agréables.

21 Therefore, thus says the Lord: “Behold I will bring this people to utter ruin, and they will fall, with their fathers and sons; neighbor and relative will perish together.”

C'est pourquoi ainsi a dit l'Eternel: voici, je m'en vais mettre en ce peuple des achoppements, auxquels les pères et les enfants, le voisin et son compagnon heurteront ensemble, et ils périront.

22 Thus says the Lord: “Behold, a people is coming from the land of the north, and a great nation will rise up from the ends of the earth.

Ainsi a dit l'Eternel: voici, un peuple vient du pays de l'Aquilon, et une grande nation se réveillera du fond de la terre.

23 They will take hold of arrow and shield. They are cruel, and they will not take pity. Their voice will roar like the ocean. And they will climb upon horses, for they have been prepared like men for battle, against you, O daughter of Zion.

Ils prendront l'arc et l'étendard; ils [seront] cruels, et n'auront point de compassion; leur voix bruira comme la mer, et ils seront montés sur des chevaux, chacun d'eux est rangé en homme de guerre contre toi, fille de Sion!

24 ‘We have heard of their fame. Our hands have become weakened. Tribulation has overtaken us, like the pains of a woman giving birth.’

En aurons-nous ouï le bruit? nos mains [en] deviendront lâches; l'angoisse nous saisira, [et] un travail comme de celle qui enfante.

25 Do not choose to go out into the fields, and you should not walk along the roadway. For the sword and the terror of the enemy is on every side.

Ne sortez point aux champs, et n'allez point par le chemin, car l'épée de l'ennemi [et] la frayeur est tout à l'entour.

26 Wrap yourself in haircloth, O daughter of my people. And sprinkle yourself with ashes. Make a mourning for yourself, as for an only son, a bitter lamentation: ‘for the destroyer will overwhelm us suddenly.’

Fille de mon peuple, ceins-toi d'un sac, et te vautre dans la cendre; mène deuil [comme] sur un fils unique, et [fais] une lamentation très-amère, car le destructeur viendra subitement sur nous.

27 I have presented you as a strong tester among my people. And you will test and know their way.

Je t'ai établi [comme] une place forte et une forteresse au milieu de mon peuple, afin que tu connaisses et sondes leur voie.

28 All these leaders who are turning away and walking deceitfully, they are brass and iron; they have all been corrupted.

Ils sont tous revêches, et plus que revêches, et ils vont médisant; ils sont [comme] de l'airain, et du fer; ils sont tous des gens qui se perdent l'un l'autre.

29 The bellows has failed; the lead has been consumed by fire; the molten metal was melted to no purpose. For their wickedness has not been consumed.

Le soufflet est brûlé, le plomb est consumé par le feu, le fondeur a fondu en vain, car les mauvais n'ont point été séparés.

30 Call them: ‘Rejected silver.’ For the Lord has cast them aside.”

On les appellera: Argent réprouvé; car l'Eternel les a réprouvés.
