Jeremiah 48
1 Against Moab, thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: “Woe upon Nebo! For it has been devastated and confounded. Kiriathaim has been seized; the strong one has been confounded and has trembled.
A Moab. Ainsi parle Yahweh des armées, Dieu d’Israël: Malheur à Nabo, car elle est ravagée; Cariathaïm est couverte de honte, elle est prise; la forteresse est couverte de honte, elle est abattue;
2 There is no longer any rejoicing in Moab over Heshbon. They have devised evil. ‘Come and let us destroy it as a nation.’ Then you will be utterly silenced, and the sword will pursue you.
elle n’est plus, la gloire de Moab! A Hésebon on médite contre lui le mal: Allons et exterminons-le d’entre les nations! Toi aussi, Madmen, tu seras réduite au silence, l’épée marche derrière toi.
3 A voice of clamor from Horonaim: devastation and great destruction!
Des cris partent de Horonaïm; dévastation et grande ruine!
4 Moab has been crushed. Announce an outcry for her little ones.
Moab est brisé; ses petits enfants font entendre des cris.
5 For, along the ascent of Luhith, the mourner will ascend with weeping. For, on the descent of Horonaim, the enemies have heard the wailing of devastation.
Oui! à la montée de Luith il y a des pleurs, on la gravit en pleurant; oui! à la descente de Horonaïm, on entend les cris de détresse.
6 Flee, save your lives! And you shall be like a saltcedar tree in the desert.
Fuyez, sauvez vos vies! Qu’elles soient comme une bruyère dans la lande!
7 For because you have had faith in your fortifications and in your storehouses, you too will be seized. And Chemosh will go into captivity: his priests and his leaders together.
Car, puisque tu as mis ta confiance en tes ouvrages et en tes trésors, toi aussi tu seras conquis; et Chamos ira en exil, avec ses prêtres et ses princes, tous ensemble.
8 And the despoiler will overwhelm every city, and not a single city will be saved. And the valleys will perish, and the fields will be destroyed. For the Lord has spoken.
Le dévastateur viendra contre toutes les villes, et pas une ville n’échappera; la vallées sera ruinée, et le plateau saccagé, comme l’a dit Yahweh.
9 Give a blossom to Moab. For it will depart when it is blossoming. And its cities will become desolate and uninhabited.
Donnez des ailes à Moab, car il faut qu’il s’envole; ses villes seront dévastées, sans qu’il y ait d’habitant.
10 Cursed is he who does the work of the Lord deceitfully. And cursed is he who prohibits his sword from blood.
Maudit soit celui qui fait mollement l’œuvre du Seigneur! Maudit celui qui refuse le sang à son épée!
11 Moab has been fertile from his youth, and he has rested amid his brood. And he has not been transferred from vessel to vessel, nor has he gone into the transmigration. Therefore, his taste has remained with him, and his scent has not changed.
Moab a été tranquille depuis sa jeunesse; il a reposé sur sa lie; il n’a pas été vidé d’un vase dans un autre, et il n’est pas allé en captivité. Aussi son goût lui est-il resté, et son parfum ne s’est pas altéré.
12 Because of this, behold, the days are approaching, says the Lord, when I will send to him those who will line up and knock down his bottles, and they will knock him down and empty his vessels, and they will break their bottles against one another.
C’est pourquoi voici que des jours viennent, — oracle Yahweh, où je lui enverrai des transvaseurs qui le transvaseront; ils videront ses vases, et ils briseront ses cruches.
13 And Moab will be confounded by Chemosh, just as the house of Israel was shamed by Bethel, in which they had faith.
Et Moab aura honte de Chamos, comme la maison d’Israël a eu honte de Béthel, en qui était sa confiance.
14 How can you say: ‘We are strong and robust men of battle?’
Comment pouvez-vous dire: « Nous sommes des guerriers, des hommes vaillants au combat? »
15 Moab has been devastated, and they have cut down her cities. And her elect young men have descended to slaughter. So says the King, whose name is the Lord of hosts.
Moab est ravagé, ses villes montent en fumée, l’élite de ses jeunes gens descend pour la boucherie; — oracle du roi, dont le nom est Yahweh des armées.
16 The passing away of Moab draws near and arrives. Its evil will rush forward with great speed.
La ruine de Moab approche, son malheur vient en grande hâte.
17 Console him, all you who surround him and all you who know his name. Say: ‘How has the strong staff become broken, the glorious staff?’
Consolez-le, vous tous, ses voisins, et vous tous qui connaissez son nom, dites: « Comment a été brisé un bâton si fort, un sceptre si magnifique? »
18 Descend from your glory, and sit in thirst, O habitation of the daughter of Dibon! For the destroyer of Moab has ascended to you; he has dissipated your fortifications.
Descends de ta gloire et assieds-toi sur la terre aride, habitante, fille de Dibon; car le dévastateur de Moab est monté contre toi, il a renversé tes remparts.
19 Stand in the way, and gaze out, O habitation of Aroer! Question him who is fleeing, and say to him who has escaped: ‘What has happened?’
Tiens-toi sur le chemin, et observe, habitante d’Aroër; interroge celui qui fuit et celle qui s’échappe; dis: « Qu’est-il arrivé? —
20 Moab has been confounded, because he has been conquered. Wail and cry out! Announce it in Arnon: Moab has been devastated,
« Moab est confus, car il est renversé. Poussez des gémissements et des cris! Annoncez sur l’Arnon que Moab est ravagé! »
21 and judgment has arrived upon the land of the plains: upon Holon, and upon Jahzah, and upon Mephaath,
Un jugement est venu sur le pays de la plaine, sur Hélon, sur Jasa, sur Méphaath,
22 and upon Dibon, and upon Nebo, and upon the house of Deblathaim,
sur Dibon, sur Nabo, sur Beth-Deblathaïm,
23 and upon Kiriathaim, and upon the house of Gamul, and upon the house of Meon,
sur Cariathaïm, sur Beth-Gamul, sur Beth-Maon,
24 and upon Kerioth, and upon Bozrah, and upon all the cities of the land of Moab, those far away and those nearby.
sur Carioth, sur Bosra et sur toutes les villes du pays de Moab, éloignées et proches.
25 The horn of Moab has been cut away, and his arm has been crushed, says the Lord.
La corne de Moab est abattue, et son bras est brisé, — oracle de Yahweh.
26 Inebriate him, for he has lifted himself up against the Lord. And Moab will thrust his hand into his own vomit, and also now he himself will become a derision.
Enivrez-le; car il s’est élevé contre Yahweh! que Moab se vautre dans son vomissement, et qu’il devienne un objet de risée, lui aussi!
27 For Israel had been a derision to them. It was as if you had discovered him among thieves. Because of your own words, then, which you have spoken against him, you will be led away captive.
Israël n’a-t-il pas été pour toi un objet de risée? L’a-t-on surpris avec des voleurs, pour que, chaque fois que tu parlés de lui, tu hoches la tête?
28 Relinquish the cities, and live upon a rock, O inhabitants of Moab, and be like a dove nesting at the mouth of an opening at the summit.
Abandonnez les villes; demeurez dans les rochers, habitants de Moab, et soyez comme la colombe qui fait son nid au-dessus du précipice béant.
29 We have listened to the arrogance of Moab; he is very proud: his exaltation, and arrogance, and pride, and the loftiness of his heart.
Nous avons entendu l’orgueil de Moab, le très orgueilleux, sa hauteur, son orgueil, sa fierté, et la fierté de son cœur.
30 I myself know, says the Lord, his boasting, and that his ability is not in accord with it, nor is it in accord with what he has been striving to do.
Moi aussi je connais, — oracle de Yahweh, sa jactance, et ses vains discours, et ses œuvres vaines.
31 For this reason, I will wail over Moab, and I will cry out to all of Moab, to the men on the brick wall who are lamenting.
C’est pourquoi je me lamente sur Moab; sur tout Moab je pousse des cris; on gémit sur les gens de Qir-Hérès.
32 O vineyard of Sibmah, I will weep for you, with the mourning of Jazer. Your offshoots have crossed over the sea. They have reached even to the sea of Jazer. The despoiler has rushed over your harvest and your vintage.
Plus encore que sur Jazer, je pleure sur toi, vigne de Sabama. Tes sarments dépassaient la mer, ils touchaient à la mer de Jazer. Sur ta récolte et sur ta vendange le dévastateur s’est jeté.
33 Rejoicing and exultation has been taken away from Carmel and from the land of Moab. And I have taken the wine from the winepresses. The treader of grapes will no longer sing the usual rhythmic chant.
La joie et l’allégresse ont disparu des vergers et de la terre de Moab; j’ai fait tarir le vin des cuves; on ne le foule plus au bruit des hourrahs; le hourrah n’est plus le hourrah.
34 From the outcry of Heshbon, even to Elealeh and Jahzah, they have uttered their voice; from Zoar, even to Horonaim, like a three year old calf. So too, the waters of Nimrim will be very bad.
A cause du cri de Hésébon jusqu’à Eléalé; jusqu’à Jasa, ils font entendre leur cri; de Segor jusqu’à Horonaïm, jusqu’à Eglath-Sélisia; Car même les eaux de Nemrim seront taries.
35 And I will take away from Moab, says the Lord, the one who makes offerings in exalted places, and the one who sacrifices to his gods.
Je veux, en finir avec Moab, — oracle de Yahweh, avec celui qui monte à son haut-lieu et offre de l’encens à son dieu.
36 Because of this, my heart will resound for Moab, like the pipes, and my heart will make a sound like the pipes for the men on the brick wall. For he has done more than he was able, yet still they have perished.
C’est pourquoi mon cœur au sujet de Moab, gémit comme une flûte, oui, mon cœur au sujet des gens de Qir-Hérès, gémit comme une flûte. C’est pourquoi le gain qu’ils avaient fait est perdu.
37 For every head will be bald, and every beard will be shaved. All the hands will be bound together, and there will be haircloth on every back.
Car toute tête est rasée, et toute barbe coupée; sur toutes les mains il y a des incisions; et sur les reins des sacs.
38 Over all the rooftops of Moab, and in its streets, everyone will mourn. For I have crushed Moab like a useless vessel, says the Lord.
Sur tous les toits de Moab et sur ses places, ce ne sont que lamentations; car j’ai brisé Moab comme un vase dont on ne veut plus, — oracle de Yahweh.
39 How was it conquered, so that they would wail? How is it that Moab has cast down his neck and been confounded? And Moab will be a derision and an example to everyone around him.”
Comme il est brisé! Gémissez! Comme Moab a honteusement tourné le dos! Moab est devenu un objet de risée, et d’épouvante pour tous ses voisins.
40 Thus says the Lord: “Behold, he will fly like the eagle, and he will extend his wings to Moab.
Car ainsi parle Yahweh: Voici qu’il prend son vol comme l’aigle, il étend ses ailes sur Moab.
41 Kerioth has been captured, and the fortifications have been taken. And in that day, the heart of the strong ones of Moab will be like the heart of a woman giving birth.
Carioth est prise, les forteresses sont emportées, et le cœur des guerriers de Moab est, en ce jour, comme le cœur d’une femme en travail.
42 And Moab will cease to be a people. For he has been glorified against the Lord.
Moab est exterminé du rang des peuples, parce qu’il s’est élevé contre Yahweh.
43 Terror and the pit and the snare will overwhelm you, O inhabitant of Moab, says the Lord.
Epouvante, fosse et filet, sont sur toi, habitant de Moab! — oracle de Yahweh.
44 Whoever flees from the terror will fall into the pit. And whoever climbs out of the pit will be seized by the snare. For I will lead over Moab the year of their visitation, says the Lord.
Celui qui fuit devant l’objet d’épouvante tombera dans la fosse, et celui qui remontera de la fosse sera pris au filet; car je vais faire venir sur lui, sur Moab, l’année de sa visitation, — oracle de Yahweh.
45 Those fleeing from the snare stood in the shadow of Heshbon. For a fire has gone forth from Heshbon, and a flame from the midst of Sihon, and it will devour the portion of Moab, and the top of the head of the sons of tumult.
A l’ombre de Hésébon ils s’arrêtent, les fuyards à bout de forces; mais il est sorti un feu de Hésébon, et une flamme du milieu de Séhon; elle a dévoré les flancs de Moab et le crâne des fils du tumulte.
46 Woe to you, O Moab! You have been ruined, O people of Chemosh! For your sons and your daughters have been taken into captivity.
Malheur à toi, Moab! Il est perdu, le peuple de Chamos; car tes fils sont emmenés en exil, et tes filles en captivité.
47 But I will convert the captivity of Moab in the last days, says the Lord.” Such are the judgments of Moab thus far.
Mais je ramènerai les captifs de Moab; à la fin des jours, — oracle de Yahweh. Jusqu’ici le jugement de Moab.
