Jeremiah 10
1 Listen to the word that the Lord has spoken concerning you, O house of Israel.
Ecoutez la parole que Yahweh vous adresse, maison d’Israël:
2 Thus says the Lord: “Do not choose to learn according to the ways of the Gentiles. And do not be willing to dread the signs of heaven, which the Gentiles fear.
Ainsi parle Yahweh: N’apprenez pas la voie des nations, et ne soyez pas effrayés par les signes du ciel, comme les nations s’en effraient;
3 For the laws of the people are empty. For the work of the hand of the craftsman has cut a tree from the forest with an axe.
Car les coutumes des nations ne sont que vanité; c’est du bois qu’on coupe dans la forêt, un ouvrage de la main du sculpteur, façonné avec le ciseau,
4 He has adorned it with silver and gold. He has put it together with nail and hammer, so that it will not fall apart.
que l’on décore avec l’argent et l’or. On le fixe avec des clous à coups de marteau, pour qu’il ne bouge pas.
5 They have been fabricated in the likeness of a palm tree, and they will not speak. They must be carried to be moved, because they do not have the ability to walk. Therefore, do not be willing to fear them, for they can do neither evil nor good.”
Ces dieux-là sont comme une colonne faite au tour; car on les porte, ils ne marchent pas. Ne les craignez point: ils ne font pas de mal; ils ne peuvent pas davantage faire du bien.
6 O Lord, there is nothing similar to you. You are great, and your name is great in strength.
Nul n’est semblable à vous, Yahweh; vous êtes grand, et votre nom est grand en puissance.
7 Who will not fear you, O King of the nations? For honor is yours. Among all the wise of the nations, and within all their kingdoms, there is nothing similar to you.
Qui ne vous craindrait, Roi des nations! c’est à vous que la crainte est due. Car, parmi tous les sages des nations et dans tous leurs royaumes, nul n’est pareil à vous.
8 Together, they will all be proven to be unwise and foolish. The doctrine of their vanity is made of wood.
Tous ensemble ils sont stupides et fous; enseignement de vanité; c’est du bois!
9 Rolled silver is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz. It is the work of a craftsman, and of the hand of a coppersmith. Hyacinth and purple is their clothing. All these things are the work of artists.
Argent battu amené de Tharsis, et or d’Ophaz; œuvre de sculpture et de main d’orfèvre! On les revêt de pourpre violette et rouge; tous ne sont qu’ouvrage d’artistes.
10 But the Lord is the true God. He is the living God and the everlasting King. Before his indignation, the earth will shake. And the Gentiles will not be able to withstand his threats.
Mais Yahweh est Dieu en vérité; lui, il est un Dieu vivant et un Roi éternel; à sa colère la terre tremble, et les nations ne soutiennent pas son courroux.
11 “And so, you shall speak to them in this way: The gods that have not made heaven and earth, let them perish from the earth and from among those places which are under heaven.
Voici comment vous leur parlerez: « Les dieux qui n’ont pas fait le ciel et la terre seront exterminés de la terre et de dessous le ciel. »
12 He made the earth by his power, he prepared the world in his wisdom, and he stretched out the heavens with his understanding.
Il a fait la terre par sa force, affermi le monde par sa sagesse, et par son intelligence il a étendu les cieux.
13 At his voice, he grants a multitude of waters in the heavens, and he lifts up the clouds from the ends of the earth. He causes the lightning with the rain, and he leads forth the wind from his storehouses.
A sa voix, les eaux s’amassent dans les cieux; il fait monter les nuages des extrémités de la terre; il fait briller les éclairs d’où jaillit l’averse, et fait sortir le vent de ses réservoirs.
14 Every man has become a fool concerning knowledge; every artist has been confounded by his graven image. For what he has formed is false, and there is no spirit in these things.
Tout homme est stupide, hors de sens; tout artisan a honte de son idole, car son image fondue n’est que mensonge; il n’y a pas de souffle en elle.
15 These things are empty, and they are a work deserving of ridicule. In the time of their visitation, they will perish.
Elle est une vanité, une œuvre de tromperie; au jour de leur châtiment, elle périra.
16 Jacob’s portion is not like their portion. For his portion is from the One who formed all things. And Israel is the staff of his inheritance. The Lord of hosts is his name.
Telle n’est pas la part de Jacob; car Lui, il a formé l’univers, et Israël est la tribu de son héritage; son nom est Yahweh des armées.
17 Gather your shame from the earth, you who are living under siege.”
Ramasse à terre ton bagage, toi qui es assiégée!
18 For thus says the Lord: “Behold, in this turn, I will cast the inhabitants of the land far away. And I will afflict them no matter where they may be found.”
Car ainsi parle Yahweh: Voici que cette fois, je vais lancer au loin les habitants du pays; je les serrerai de près, afin que l’ennemi les atteigne.
19 Woe to me, concerning my destruction! My wound is very grievous. And yet I said: Clearly, this infirmity is mine, and I will carry it.
Malheur à moi à cause de ma meurtrissure! Ma plaie est douloureuse; mais je le dis: « Oui, c’est là mon mal, et je le supporterai.
20 My tent has been destroyed. All my cords have been broken. My sons have gone away from me; they did not remain. There is no one to stretch out my tent any more, nor to set up my curtains.
Ma tente est dévastée, tous mes cordages sont rompus; mes fils m’ont quittée, ils ne sont plus; je n’ai plus personne pour redresser ma tente, relever mes pavillons. »
21 For the pastors have acted foolishly, and they have not sought the Lord. Because of this, they have not understood, and all their flock has been dispersed.
Ah! les pasteurs sont stupides; ils n’ont pas cherché Yahweh; aussi n’ont-ils pas prospéré, et tout leur troupeau a été dispersé.
22 Behold, the sound of a voice approaches, a great commotion from the land of the north: so that he may make the cities of Judah into a wilderness and into a dwelling place for serpents.
Un bruit, une rumeur! Voici qu’elle vient, un grand tumulte arrive du pays du septentrion, pour faire des villes de Juda un désert, un repaire de chacals.
23 I know, O Lord, that the way of man is not his own. Neither is it given to man to walk and to direct his own steps.
Je le sais, ô Yahweh, ce n’est pas à l’homme qu’appartient sa voie, ce n’est pas à l’homme qui marche de diriger ses pas.
24 Correct me, O Lord, yet truly, do so with judgment, and not in your fury. Otherwise, you will reduce me to nothing.
Châtiez-moi, Yahweh, mais selon la justice, et non dans votre colère, pour me réduire à néant.
25 Pour out your indignation upon the nations that have not known you, and upon the provinces that have not invoked your name. For they have fed upon Jacob, and devoured him, and consumed him, and they have utterly destroyed his honor.
Versez votre fureur sur les nations qui ne vous connaissent pas, sur les peuples qui n’invoquent pas votre nom; car ils ont dévoré Jacob, ils l’ont dévoré, ils l’achèvent, et ils dévastent sa demeure.
