Genesis 2
1 And so the heavens and the earth were completed, with all their adornment.
Le ciel et la terre furent ainsi achevés, avec toute leur parure.
2 And on the seventh day, God fulfilled his work, which he had made. And on the seventh day he rested from all his work, which he had accomplished.
Dieu acheva, le sixième jour, ses œuvres, les œuvres qu'il avait faites; et il se reposa le septième jour de ses travaux, de tous les travaux qu'il avait accomplis.
3 And he blessed the seventh day and sanctified it. For in it, he had ceased from all his work: the work whereby God created whatever he should make.
Et Dieu bénit le septième jour, et le sanctifia, parce que ce jour-là il s'était reposé de tous ses travaux, des travaux qu'il avait entrepris de faire.
4 These are the generations of heaven and earth, when they were created, in the day when the Lord God made heaven and earth,
Voilà le livre de la naissance du ciel et de la terre, telle qu'elle s'accomplit, le jour où le Seigneur Dieu acheva de créer le ciel et la terre,
5 and every sapling of the field, before it would rise up in the land, and every wild plant, before it would germinate. For the Lord God had not brought rain upon the earth, and there was no man to work the land.
Et toute la verdure des champs avant qu'elle naquît de la terre, et toute plante herbacée avant qu'elle eût germé; car Dieu n'arrosait point encore la terre, comme aussi il n'y avait point d'homme pour la travailler.
6 But a fountain ascended from the earth, irrigating the entire surface of the land.
Seulement une fontaine jaillissait du sol, et abreuvait toute la face de la terre.
7 And then the Lord God formed man from the clay of the earth, and he breathed into his face the breath of life, and man became a living soul.
Pour faire l'homme, Dieu pétrit une masse d'argile extraite de la terre, et sur sa face, il souffla un souffle de vie, et l'homme devint une âme vivante.
8 Now the Lord God had planted a Paradise of enjoyment from the beginning. In it, he placed the man whom he had formed.
Or, Dieu avait créé un paradis dans Éden, à l'orient; et il y plaça l'homme qu'il venait de former.
9 And from the soil the Lord God produced every tree that was beautiful to behold and pleasant to eat. And even the tree of life was in the midst of Paradise, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
Dieu aussi avait fait germer de la terre tout arbre à l'aspect magnifique et aux fruits délicieux, et, au milieu du paradis, l'arbre de vie avec l'arbre de la science du bien et du mal.
10 And a river went forth from the place of enjoyment so as to irrigate Paradise, which is divided from there into four heads.
Pour arroser le paradis, un fleuve jaillissait d'Éden, d'où il sortait divisé en quatre bras.
11 The name of one is the Phison; it is that which runs through all the land of Hevilath, where gold is born;
Le nom de l'un est Phison, celui qui entoure la terre d'Évilat, d'où vient l'or.
12 and the gold of that land is the finest. In that place is found bdellium and the onyx stone.
On sait que l'or de cette terre est excellent; la aussi sont l'anthrax et la pierre verte.
13 And the name of the second river is the Gehon; it is that which runs through all the land of Ethiopia.
Le nom du second fleuve est Gehon; c'est celui qui entoure la terre d'Éthiopie.
14 Truly, the name of the third river is the Tigris; it advances opposite the Assyrians. But the fourth river, it is the Euphrates.
Le troisième fleuve est le Tigre; c'est celui qui coule en face des Assyriens. Le quatrième fleuve est l'Euphrate.
15 Thus, the Lord God brought the man, and put him into the Paradise of enjoyment, so that it would be attended and preserved by him.
Le Seigneur prit l'homme qu'il avait formé, et il le plaça dans le paradis de délices, pour y travailler et le garder.
16 And he instructed him, saying: “From every tree of Paradise, you shall eat.
Le Seigneur fit ensuite un précepte à Adam, disant: Tu te nourriras de tous les arbres du paradis.
17 But from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, you shall not eat. For in whatever day you will eat from it, you will die a death.”
Mais de l'arbre de la science du bien et du mal, gardez-vous d'en manger, car, le jour où vous en mangerez, vous mourrez de mort.
18 The Lord God also said: “It is not good for the man to be alone. Let us make a helper for him similar to himself.”
Puis le Seigneur dit: Il n'est pas bon que l'homme soit seul; créons-lui un aide semblable à lui.
19 Therefore, the Lord God, having formed from the soil all the animals of the earth and all the flying creatures of the air, brought them to Adam, in order to see what he would call them. For whatever Adam would call any living creature, that would be its name.
Or, Dieu avait aussi formé de la terre toutes les bêtes des champs et tous les oiseaux du ciel, et il les avait conduits devant Adam pour qu'il sût comment il les nommerait, car tout nom qu'Adam donna à chaque âme vivante devint, en effet, son nom.
20 And Adam called each of the living things by their names: all the flying creatures of the air, and all the wild beasts of the land. Yet truly, for Adam, there was not found a helper similar to himself.
Adam donna des noms à tous les bestiaux, et à tous les oiseaux du ciel, et à toutes les bêtes des champs. Mais il ne se trouvait pas pour Adam d'aide semblable à lui.
21 And so the Lord God sent a deep sleep upon Adam. And when he was fast asleep, he took one of his ribs, and he completed it with flesh for it.
Alors Dieu fit tomber Adam en extase et l'endormit; puis il prit une de ses côtes, qu'il remplaça par de la chair.
22 And the Lord God built up the rib, which he took from Adam, into a woman. And he led her to Adam.
Et de cette côte qu'il avait prise à Adam, il forma une femme et il la conduisit a Adam.
23 And Adam said: “Now this is bone from my bones, and flesh from my flesh. This one shall be called woman, because she was taken from man.”
Et Adam dit: Ceci maintenant est un os de mes os et une chair de ma chair. Celle-ci sera appelée femme, parce qu'elle a été prise de la chair même de l'homme.
24 For this reason, a man shall leave behind his father and mother, and he shall cling to his wife; and the two shall be as one flesh.
À cause de cela, l'homme quittera son père et sa mère, il restera fortement attaché à sa femme, et ils seront deux en une seule chair
25 Now they were both naked: Adam, of course, and his wife. And they were not ashamed.
Ils étaient nus tous deux: Adam et sa femme; et ils n'en avaient point honte.
