Deuteronomy 3

1 “And so, having turned back, we ascended by the way of Bashan. And Og, the king of Bashan, went forth with his people to meet us in warfare at Edrei.

Et étant partis nous montâmes du côté de Basan; alors vint à notre rencontre Og, Roi de Basan, lui et tout son peuple pour nous attaquer à Edrei.

2 And the Lord said to me: ‘You should not fear him. For he has been delivered into your hand, with all his people as well as his land. And you shall do to him just as you have done to Sihon, the king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon.’

Et l'Éternel me dit: Ne le redoute pas, car je livre entre tes mains, et lui et tout son peuple et son pays, et tu le traiteras comme tu as traité Sihon, Roi des Amoréens, qui résidait à Hesbon.

3 Therefore, the Lord our God delivered into our hands, now Og, the king of Bashan, and all his people. And we struck them down unto utter annihilation,

L'Éternel, notre Dieu, livra, donc aussi entre nos mains Og, Roi de Basan, et tout son peuple, et nous le battîmes jusqu'à ne lui laisser aucun réchappé.

4 laying waste to all his cities at one time. There was not a village which escaped from us: sixty cities, the entire region of Argob, the kingdom of Og, in Bashan.

Et en même temps nous prîmes toutes ses villes; il n'y eut pas une place que nous ne leur enlevâmes, soixante villes, tout le canton d'Argob, royaume de Og en Basan.

5 All the cities were fortified with very high walls, and with gates and bars, in addition to innumerable villages which had no walls.

Toutes ces villes, à l'exception des villes rurales, très nombreuses, étaient munies de hautes murailles, de portes et de barres.

6 And we wiped them out, just as we had done to Sihon, the king of Heshbon, destroying every city, and its men, as well as women and children.

Et nous les dévouâmes, comme nous l'avions fait à Sihon, Roi de Hesbon, dévouant toutes villes, hommes, femmes et enfants.

7 But the cattle and the spoils of the cities, we plundered.

Mais nous fîmes notre butin de la totalité du bétail et des dépouilles des villes.

8 And at that time, we took the land from the hand of the two kings of the Amorites, who were across the Jordan: from the torrent Arnon as far as Mount Hermon,

C'est ainsi qu'en ce temps-là nous conquîmes le pays sur les deux rois des Amoréens au delà du Jourdain depuis le torrent de l'Arnon jusqu'au mont Hermon

9 which the Sidonians call Sirion, and the Amorites call Senir,

(les Sidoniens donnent à l'Hermon le nom de Sirion et les Amoréens celui de Sénir),

10 all the cities that are situated in the plain, and the entire land of Gilead and Bashan, all the way to Salecah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan.

toutes les villes de la plaine, et tout Galaad et tout Basan jusqu'à Salcha et Edrei, villes du royaume de Og en Basan.

11 For only Og, the king of Bashan, was left behind out of the race of the giants. His bed of iron is on display, (it is in Rabbah, among the sons of Ammon) being nine cubits in length, and four in width, according to the measure of the cubit of a man’s hand.

(Og, Roi de Basan, était le seul survivant du reste des géants; voici, son lit, lit de fer, n'est-il pas à Rabba dans le pays des fils d'Ammon, ayant neuf coudées de longueur et quatre coudées de largeur, coudée d'homme?)

12 And we possessed the land, at that time, from Aroer, which is above the bank of the torrent Arnon, as far as the middle of Mount Gilead. And I gave its cities to Ruben and Gad.

Et dans ce temps-là nous conquîmes ce pays depuis Aroër sur l'Arnon. Et la moitié de la montagne de Galaad avec ses villes, je la donnai aux Rubénites et. aux Gadites;

13 Then I delivered the remaining part of Gilead, and all of Bashan, the kingdom of Og, which is the entire region of Argob, to one half of the tribe of Manasseh. And all of Bashan is called the land of the giants.

et le reste de Galaad et tout Basan, royaume de Og, je le donnai à la demi-Tribu de Manassé, tout le canton d'Argob, Basan tout entier; c'est ce qui s'appelle le pays des géants.

14 Jair, the son of Manasseh, possessed all the region of Argob, as far as the borders of Geshur and Maacath. And he called Bashan by his own name, Havvoth Jair, that is, the villages of Jair, even to the present day.

Jaïr, fils de Manassé, conquit tout le canton d'Argob jusqu'aux frontières des Gesurites et des Maachathites, et il y donna, à Basan, d'après son nom, le nom de bourgs de Jaïr, jusqu'aujourd'hui.

15 Likewise, to Machir, I gave Gilead.

Et à Machir je donnai Galaad.

16 And to the tribes of Ruben and Gad, I gave from the land of Gilead as far as the torrent Arnon, one half of the torrent and its confines, even to the torrent Jabbok, which is along the border of the sons of Ammon,

Et aux Rubénites et aux Gadites, je donnai une partie de Galaad et jusqu'au torrent de l'Arnon, ce qui est en dedans du torrent et le territoire adjacent, jusqu'au Jabbok, torrent frontière des fils d'Ammon,

17 and the plain of the wilderness, as well as the Jordan, and the borders of Chinnereth, all the way to the sea of the desert, which is very salty, to the base of Mount Pisgah toward the east.

et la plaine et le Jourdain et le territoire adjacent depuis Kinnéreth jusqu'à la mer de la plaine, la Mer-Salée, au pied du Pisga, à l'Orient.

18 And I instructed you at that time, saying: ‘The Lord your God gives to you this land as an inheritance. Having armed yourselves, go before your brothers, the sons of Israel, all you strong men.

En ce temps-là je vous donnai ce commandement: L'Éternel, votre Dieu, vous a livré ce pays pour le conquérir. Il faut que vous, tout ce que vous avez de guerriers, vous marchiez armés en tête de vos frères, les fils d'Israël.

19 Leave behind your wives and little ones, as well as the cattle. For I know that you have many cattle, and they should remain in the cities which I have delivered to you,

Vos femmes, vos enfants et vos troupeaux seuls (je sais que vous avez de nombreux troupeaux) resteront dans vos villes que je vous ai données,

20 until the Lord provides rest to your brothers, just as he has provided for you. And they, too, shall possess the land, which he will give to them beyond the Jordan. Then each one shall return to his possession, which I have allotted to you.’

jusqu'à ce que l'Éternel ait accordé à vos frères le repos comme à vous, et qu'eux aussi aient conquis le pays que l'Éternel, votre Dieu, leur donne au delà du Jourdain; alors vous pourrez chacun de vous revenir dans votre conquête que je vous ai donnée.

21 Likewise, I instructed Joshua at that time, saying: ‘Your eyes have seen what the Lord your God has done to these two kings. So also will he do to all the kingdoms through which you shall pass.

Et dans ce temps je donnai mes instructions à Josué en ces termes: Tes yeux ont vu tout ce que l'Éternel, votre Dieu, a fait à ces deux Rois: ainsi fera l'Éternel à tous les royaumes que tu vas envahir.

22 You should not fear them. For the Lord your God will fight on your behalf.’

Ne les redoutez pas, car l'Éternel, votre Dieu, lui-même combattra pour vous.

23 And I beseeched the Lord at that time, saying:

Et dans ce même temps je fis à l'Éternel cette supplication:

24 ‘Lord God, you have begun to reveal your greatness and your very strong hand to your servant. For there is no other god, either in heaven or on earth, who is able to accomplish your works, or to be compared to your strength.

Seigneur, Éternel, tu as commencé à montrer à ton serviteur ta majesté et ta main puissante; car où est dans les Cieux et sur la terre un Dieu qui fasse rien de pareil à tes œuvres et à tes exploits?

25 Therefore, I will cross over, and I will view this excellent land beyond the Jordan, and this singular mountain, and Lebanon.’

Oh! permets aussi que je passe et que je voie ce beau pays de l'autre côté du Jourdain, ces belles montagnes et le Liban!

26 And the Lord became angry with me because of you, and he would not heed me. But he said to me: ‘It is enough for you. You shall no longer speak to me at all about this matter.

Mais l'Éternel se courrouça contre moi à cause de vous, et Il ne m'exauça pas, et l'Éternel me dit: C'est assez! ne me parle plus de cette affaire.

27 Ascend to the summit of Pisgah, and look around with your eyes to the west, and to the north, and to the south, and to the east, and behold it. For you shall not cross this Jordan.

Monte au sommet du Pisga, puis porte tes regards à l'occident et au septentrion et au midi et à l'orient, et contemple de tes yeux; car tu ne passeras pas ce Jourdain.

28 Instruct Joshua, and encourage and strengthen him. For he shall go before this people, and he shall distribute to them the land that you will see.’

Et laisse tes instructions à Josué, affermis et fortifie-le; car c'est lui qui marchera à la tête de ce peuple, et qui leur partagera le pays que tu verras.

29 And we remained in the valley, opposite the shrine of Peor.”

Nous demeurâmes donc dans la vallée vis-à-vis de Beth-Pehor.
