2 Chronicles 7

1 And when Solomon had completed pouring out his prayers, fire descended from heaven, and it devoured the holocausts and the victims. And the majesty of the Lord filled the house.

Lorsque Salomon eut achevé de prier, le feu descendit du ciel et consuma l’holocauste et les victimes, et la gloire de Yahweh remplit la maison.

2 Neither were the priests able to enter into the temple of the Lord, because the majesty of the Lord had filled the temple of the Lord.

Les prêtres ne pouvaient entrer dans la maison de Yahweh, car la gloire de Yahweh remplissait sa maison.

3 Moreover, all the sons of Israel saw the fire descending, and the glory of the Lord upon the house. And falling prone upon the ground, on the layer of pavement stones, they adored and praised the Lord: “For he is good. For his mercy is everlasting.”

Tous les enfants d’Israël virent descendre le feu et la gloire de Yahweh sur la maison et, tombant le visage contre terre sur le pavé, ils se prosternèrent et louèrent Yahweh, en disant: « Car il est bon, car sa miséricorde dure à jamais! »

4 Then the king and all the people were immolating victims before the Lord.

Le roi et tout le peuple offrirent des sacrifices devant Yahweh.

5 And so, king Solomon slaughtered victims: twenty-two thousand oxen, and one hundred twenty thousand rams. And the king and the entire people dedicated the house of God.

Le roi Salomon immola, pour le sacrifice, vingt deux mille bœufs et cent vingt mille brebis. C’est ainsi que le roi et tout le peuple firent la dédicace de la maison de Dieu.

6 Then the priests and the Levites were standing in their offices, with the instruments of music for the Lord, which king David made in order to praise the Lord: “For his mercy is eternal.” And they were playing the hymns of David with their hands. And the priests were sounding out with trumpets before them, and all of Israel was standing.

Les prêtres se tenaient à leurs postes, et les lévites aussi avec les instruments de musique de Yahweh que le roi David avait faits pour louer Yahweh, « car sa miséricorde dure à jamais! » lorsqu’il célébra Yahweh par leur ministère. Les prêtres sonnaient des trompettes vis-à-vis d’eux, et tout Israël était debout.

7 Also, Solomon sanctified the middle of the atrium in front of the temple of the Lord. For he had offered the holocausts and the fat of peace offerings in that place because the bronze altar, which he had made, had not been able to support the holocausts and the sacrifices and the fat.

Salomon consacra le milieu du parvis qui est devant la maison de Yahweh; car il offrit là les holocaustes et les graisses des sacrifices pacifiques, parce que l’autel d’airain qu’il avait fait ne pouvait contenir l’holocauste, l’oblation et les graisses.

8 Therefore, Solomon kept the solemnity, at that time, for seven days, and all of Israel with him, a very great assembly, from the entrance of Hamath, even to the torrent of Egypt.

Salomon célébra la fête en ce temps-là pendant sept jours, et tout Israël avec lui, très grande multitude venue depuis l’entrée d’Emath jusqu’au torrent d’Égypte.

9 And on the eighth day, he held a solemn gathering, because he had dedicated the altar over seven days, and he had celebrated the solemnity over seven days.

Le huitième jour, ils tinrent l’assemblée de clôture; car ils avaient fait la dédicace de l’autel pendant sept jours, et la fête pendant sept jours.

10 And so, on the twenty-third day of the seventh month, he dismissed the people to their dwellings, joyful and glad over the good that the Lord had done for David, and for Solomon, and for his people Israel.

Et le vingt troisième jour du septième mois, Salomon renvoya dans ses tentes le peuple joyeux et le cœur content pour le bien que Yahweh avait fait à David, à Salomon et à Israël, son peuple.

11 And Solomon completed the house of the Lord, and the house of the king, and all that he had resolved in his heart to do for the house of the Lord, and for his own house. And he prospered.

Salomon acheva la maison de Yahweh et la maison du roi, et il mena à bien tout ce qui lui était venu à l’esprit de faire dans la maison de Yahweh et dans la maison du roi.

12 Then the Lord appeared to him by night, and said: “I have heard your prayer, and I have chosen this place for myself as a house of sacrifice.

Et Yahweh lui apparut pendant la nuit et lui dit: « J’ai exaucé ta prière et j’ai choisi ce lieu comme la maison où l’on m’offrira des sacrifices.

13 If I close up heaven, so that no rain will fall, or if I order and instruct the locust to devour the land, or if I send a pestilence among my people,

Quand je fermerai le ciel et qu’il n’y aura pas de pluie, quand j’ordonnerai aux sauterelles de dévorer le pays, ou quand j’enverrai la peste dans mon peuple,

14 and if my people, over whom my name has been invoked, being converted, will have petitioned me and sought my face, and will have done penance for their wicked ways, then I will heed them from heaven, and I will forgive their sins, and I will heal their land.

si mon peuple, sur lequel est invoqué mon nom, s’humilie, prie et cherche ma face, et s’il se détourne de ses mauvaises voies, je l’écouterai du ciel, je lui pardonnerai son péché et je guérirai son pays.

15 Also, my eyes will be open, and my ears will be attentive, to the prayer of him who shall pray in this place.

Maintenant, mes yeux seront ouverts et mes oreilles attentives à la prière faite en ce lieu.

16 For I have chosen and sanctified this place, so that my name may be there continually, and so that my eyes and my heart may remain there, for all days.

Maintenant je choisis et je sanctifie cette maison, pour que mon nom y réside à jamais, et là seront à jamais mes yeux et mon cœur.

17 And as for you, if you will walk before me, just as your father David walked, and if you will act in accord with all that I have instructed you, and if you will observe my justices and judgments,

Et toi, si tu marches devant moi comme a marché David, ton père, mettant en pratique tout ce que je t’ai prescrit, et si tu observes mes lois et mes ordonnances,

18 I will raise up the throne of your kingdom, just as I promised to your father David, saying: ‘There shall not be taken away a man from your stock who will be ruler in Israel.’

j’affermirai le trône de ta royauté, selon l’alliance que j’ai conclue avec David, ton père, en disant: il ne te manquera jamais un descendant qui règne en Israël.

19 But if you will have turned away, and will have forsaken my justices and my precepts, which I have set before you, and going astray, you serve strange gods, and you adore them,

Mais si vous vous détournez, si vous abandonnez mes lois et mes commandements que j’ai mis devant vous, et si vous allez servir d’autres dieux et vous prosterner devant eux,

20 I will uproot you from my land, which I gave to you, and from this house, which I sanctified to my name, and I will cast it away from before my face, and I will deliver it to be a parable and an example for all the peoples.

je les arracherai de mon pays que je leur ai donné; cette maison que j’ai consacrée à mon nom, je la rejetterai de devant ma face, et j’en ferai un sujet de sarcasme et de raillerie parmi tous les peuples.

21 And this house will be like a proverb to all who pass by. And being astonished, they shall say: ‘Why has the Lord acted this way toward this land and toward this house?’

Cette maison qui était si haut placée sera un sujet de stupeur pour quiconque passera près d’elle, et il dira: Pourquoi Yahweh a-t-il ainsi traité ce pays et cette maison?

22 And they shall respond: ‘Because they abandoned the Lord, the God of their fathers, who led them away from the land of Egypt, and they took hold of foreign gods, and they adored and worshipped them. Therefore, all these evils have overwhelmed them.’”

Et l’on répondra: Parce qu’ils ont abandonné Yahweh, le Dieu de leurs pères, qui les a fait sortir du pays d’Égypte, et que, s’attachant à d’autres dieux, ils se sont prosternés devant eux et les ont servis; voilà pourquoi il a fait venir sur eux tous ces maux. »
