1 Timothy 1

1 Paul, an Apostle of Jesus Christ by the authority of God our Savior and Christ Jesus our hope,

Paul, apôtre de Jésus-Christ, selon le mandat de Dieu notre sauveur, et de Christ Jésus notre espérance,

2 to Timothy, beloved son in the faith. Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and from Christ Jesus our Lord.

à Timothée, mon enfant légitime en la foi: Grâce, miséricorde, paix, de par Dieu le Père, et Christ Jésus notre seigneur!

3 Now I asked you to remain at Ephesus, while I went into Macedonia, so that you would speak strongly against certain ones who have been teaching a different way,

Conformément à l'exhortation que, en partant pour la Macédoine, je t'ai adressée de demeurer à Éphèse, afin d'enjoindre à certains hommes de ne pas enseigner d'autres doctrines,

4 against those who have been paying attention to fables and endless genealogies. These things present questions as if they were greater than the edification that is of God, which is in faith.

et de ne point s'attacher à des fables et à des généalogies sans fin, lesquelles favorisent les discussions plutôt que le plan de Dieu qui fait l'objet de la foi…

5 Now the goal of instruction is charity from a pure heart, and a good conscience, and an unfeigned faith.

Mais le but de cette injonction, c'est une charité issue d'un cœur pur, d'une bonne conscience et d'une foi sincère,

6 Certain persons, wandering away from these things, have been turned aside to empty babbling,

toutes choses dont se sont éloignés, pour se jeter dans des chimères, certains hommes

7 desiring to be teachers of the law, but understanding neither the things that they themselves are saying, nor what they are affirming about these things.

qui ont la prétention d'être des docteurs de la loi, bien qu'ils ne comprennent ni ce qu'ils disent, ni de quoi ils se tiennent pour assurés.

8 But we know that the law is good, if one makes use of it properly.

Or nous savons que la loi est bonne, pourvu qu'on l'observe légalement,

9 Knowing this, that the law was not set in place for the just, but for the unjust and the insubordinate, for the impious and sinners, for the wicked and the defiled, for those who commit patricide, matricide, or homicide,

en sachant bien que ce n'est pas pour le juste qu'elle est faite, mais pour les criminels et les rebelles, les impies et les pécheurs, les sacrilèges et les profanes, les parricides, les meurtriers,

10 for fornicators, for males who sleep with males, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine,

les impudiques, les infâmes, les marchands d'hommes, les menteurs, les parjures, et pour toute autre infraction au salutaire enseignement,

11 which is in accord with the Gospel of the glory of the blessed God, the Gospel which has been entrusted to me.

selon la bonne nouvelle de la gloire du Dieu bienheureux, que je suis chargé d'annoncer.

12 I give thanks to him who has strengthened me, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he has considered me faithful, placing me in the ministry,

Je rends grâce à celui qui m'a fortifié, Christ Jésus notre seigneur, de ce qu'il m'a jugé fidèle, puisqu'il m'a appelé au ministère,

13 though previously I was a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and contemptuous. But then I obtained the mercy of God. For I had been acting ignorantly, in unbelief.

moi, qui auparavant étais un calomniateur, un persécuteur, et un oppresseur; mais il m'a été fait miséricorde, parce que, dans mon incrédulité, j'avais agi par ignorance;

14 And so the grace of our Lord has abounded greatly, with the faith and love that is in Christ Jesus.

et la grâce de notre seigneur a surabondé avec la foi et la charité qui sont en Christ Jésus.

15 It is a faithful saying, and worthy of acceptance by everyone, that Christ Jesus came into this world to bring salvation to sinners, among whom I am first.

C'est une vérité certaine et digne de toute créance, que Christ Jésus est venu dans le monde pour sauver les pécheurs, dont je suis le premier;

16 But it was for this reason that I obtained mercy, so that in me as first, Christ Jesus would display all patience, for the instruction of those who would believe in him unto eternal life. (aiōnios g166)

mais si, néanmoins, il m'a été fait miséricorde, c'est afin qu'en moi le premier Christ Jésus manifestât toute sa patience, pour que je servisse d'exemple à ceux qui devaient croire en lui pour la vie éternelle. (aiōnios g166)

17 So then, to the King of ages, to the immortal, invisible, solitary God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. (aiōn g165)

18 This precept I commend to you, my son Timothy, in accord with the prophets who preceded you: that you serve among them like a soldier in a good war,

L'injonction que je t'adresse, Timothée, mon enfant, conformément aux prophéties antérieurement faites à ton sujet, c'est de combattre, d'après elles, le bon combat,

19 holding to faith and good conscience, against those who, by rejecting these things, have made a shipwreck of the faith.

en retenant la foi et une bonne conscience, dont certains hommes s'étant débarrassés, ils ont fait naufrage quant à la foi,

20 Among these are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan, so that they may learn not to blaspheme.

du nombre desquels sont Hyménée et Alexandre que j'ai livrés à Satan, afin qu'ils apprennent à ne plus blasphémer.
