1 Samuel 31
1 Now the Philistines were fighting against Israel. And the men of Israel fled before the face of the Philistines, and they fell down slain on mount Gilboa.
Die Philister aber stritten wider Israel [1. Chron. 10,1-12;] und die Männer von Israel flohen vor den Philistern, und Erschlagene fielen [O. und fielen erschlagen] auf dem Gebirge Gilboa.
2 And the Philistines rushed upon Saul, and upon his sons, and they struck down Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchishua, the sons of Saul.
Und die Philister setzten Saul und seinen Söhnen hart nach; und die Philister erschlugen Jonathan und Abinadab und Malkischua, die Söhne Sauls.
3 And the entire weight of the battle was turned against Saul. And the men who were archers pursued him. And he was severely wounded by the archers.
Und der Streit wurde heftig wider Saul, und es erreichten ihn die Schützen, Männer mit dem Bogen; und es wurde ihm sehr angst vor den Schützen.
4 Then Saul said to his armor bearer, “Draw your sword and strike me, otherwise these uncircumcised may come and kill me, mocking me.” And his armor bearer was not willing. For he had been struck with an exceedingly great fear. And so, Saul took his own sword, and he fell upon it.
Da sprach Saul zu seinem Waffenträger: Ziehe dein Schwert und durchbohre mich damit, daß nicht diese Unbeschnittenen kommen und mich durchbohren und mich mißhandeln! Sein Waffenträger aber wollte nicht, denn er fürchtete sich sehr. Da nahm Saul das Schwert und stürzte sich darein.
5 And when his armor bearer had seen this, namely, that Saul had died, he too fell upon his sword, and he died with him.
Und als sein Waffenträger sah, daß Saul tot war, da stürzte auch er sich in sein Schwert und starb mit ihm.
6 Therefore, Saul died, and his three sons, and his armor bearer, and all his men, on the same day together.
So starben Saul und seine drei Söhne und sein Waffenträger, auch alle seine Männer an selbigem Tage zugleich.
7 Then, seeing that the men of the Israelites had fled, and that Saul had died with his sons, the men of Israel who were across the valley or beyond the Jordan abandoned their cities, and they fled. And the Philistines went and lived there.
Und als die Männer von Israel, die diesseit [And.: jenseit] des Tales [d. h. der Talebene von Jisreel] und diesseit [And.: jenseit] des Jordan waren, sahen, daß die Männer von Israel geflohen, und daß Saul und seine Söhne tot waren, da verließen sie die Städte und flohen; und die Philister kamen und wohnten darin.
8 Then, when the next day arrived, the Philistines came, so that they might despoil the slain. And they found Saul and his three sons lying on mount Gilboa.
Und es geschah am folgenden Tage, da kamen die Philister, um die Erschlagenen auszuziehen; und sie fanden Saul und seine drei Söhne auf dem Gebirge Gilboa liegen.
9 And they cut off the head of Saul. And they despoiled him of the armor, and they sent it into the land of the Philistines all around, so that it might be announced in the temples of the idols and among their people.
Und sie hieben ihm den Kopf ab und zogen ihm seine Waffen aus; und sie sandten [O. sandten sie] in das Land der Philister ringsumher, um die frohe Botschaft in den Häusern ihrer Götzen und unter dem Volke zu verkünden.
10 And they placed his armor in the temple of Ashtaroth. But his body they suspended on the wall of Bethshan.
Und sie legten seine Waffen in das Haus der Astaroth, und seinen Leichnam hefteten sie an die Mauer von Beth-Schan.
11 And when the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead had heard all that the Philistines had done to Saul,
Als aber die Bewohner von Jabes-Gilead über ihn hörten, was die Philister mit Saul getan hatten,
12 all the most valiant men rose up, and they walked all night, and they took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Bethshan. And they went to Jabesh Gilead, and they burned them there.
da machten sich alle tapferen Männer auf und gingen die ganze Nacht; und sie nahmen den Leichnam Sauls und die Leichname seiner Söhne von der Mauer von Beth-Schan weg; und sie kamen nach Jabes zurück und verbrannten sie daselbst.
13 And they took their bones, and they buried them in the forest of Jabesh. And they fasted for seven days.
Und sie nahmen ihre Gebeine und begruben sie unter der Tamariske zu Jabes, und fasteten sieben Tage.
