1 Kings 18
1 After many days, the word of the Lord came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, “Go and show yourself to Ahab, so that I may grant rain upon the face of the earth.”
Plusieurs jours après il arriva que la parole de l'Eternel fut [adressée] à Elie, en la troisième année, en disant: Va, montre-toi à Achab, et je donnerai de la pluie sur la terre.
2 Therefore, Elijah went to show himself to Ahab. For there was a severe famine in Samaria.
Elie donc s'en alla pour se montrer à Achab; or il y avait une grande famine dans la Samarie.
3 And Ahab called Obadiah, the manager of his household. Now Obadiah feared the Lord greatly.
Et Achab avait appelé Abdias son maître d'hôtel, (or Abdias craignait fort l'Eternel;
4 For when Jezebel was killing the prophets of the Lord, he took one hundred prophets, and concealed them, fifty and fifty, in caves. And he fed them with bread and water.
Car quand Izebel exterminait les Prophètes de l'Eternel, Abdias prit cent Prophètes, et les cacha, cinquante dans une caverne, et cinquante dans une autre, et les y nourrit de pain et d'eau.)
5 Then Ahab said to Obadiah, “Go into the land, to all fountains of water, and to all the valleys, for perhaps we will be able to find plants, and save the horses and mules, so that the beasts of burden may not perish entirely.”
Et Achab avait dit à Abdias: Va par le pays vers toutes les fontaines d'eaux, et vers tous les torrents; peut-être que nous trouverons de l'herbe, et que nous sauverons la vie aux chevaux et aux mulets, et nous ne laisserons point dépeupler le pays de bêtes.
6 And they divided the regions among themselves, so that they might travel through them. Ahab went one way alone, and Obadiah went another way by himself.
Ils partagèrent donc entr'eux le pays, afin d'aller partout; Achab allait séparément par un chemin, et Abdias allait séparément par un autre chemin.
7 And while Obadiah was on the way, Elijah met him. And when he had recognized him, he fell on his face, and he said, “Are you not my lord Elijah?”
Et comme Abdias était en chemin, voilà, Elie le rencontra, et il reconnut Elie, et s'inclinant sur son visage, il lui dit: N'es-tu pas mon Seigneur Elie?
8 And he responded to him: “I am. Go and tell your lord that Elijah is here.”
Et [Elie] lui répondit: C'est moi-même; va, [et] dis à ton Seigneur, voici Elie.
9 And he said: “How have I sinned that you would deliver me, your servant, into the hand of Ahab, so that he would put me to death?
Et Abdias dit: Quel crime ai-je fait, que tu livres ton serviteur entre les mains d'Achab pour me faire mourir?
10 As the Lord your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom to which my lord has not sent, seeking you. And when all responded, ‘He is not here,’ he swore each kingdom and nation to an oath, because you were not found at all.
L'Eternel ton Dieu est vivant, qu'il n'y a ni nation, ni Royaume, où mon Seigneur n'ait envoyé pour te chercher; et on a répondu; il n'y est point. Il a même fait jurer les Royaumes et les nations [pour découvrir] si l'on ne pourrait point te trouver.
11 And now, you say to me, ‘Go and tell your lord that Elijah is here.’
Et maintenant tu dis: Va, [et] dis à ton Seigneur, voici Elie.
12 And when I will have departed from you, the Spirit of the Lord will transport you to a place that I do not know. And entering, I will report to Ahab. And he, not finding you, will put me to death. Yet your servant has feared the Lord from his infancy.
Et il arrivera que quand je serai parti d'avec toi, l'Esprit de l'Eternel te transportera en quelque endroit que je ne saurai point, et je viendrai vers Achab pour lui déclarer [ce que tu m'as dit], et ne te trouvant point, il me tuera; or ton serviteur craint l'Eternel dès sa jeunesse.
13 Has it not been revealed to you, my lord, what I did when Jezebel was killing the prophets of the Lord: how I hid one hundred men from the prophets of the Lord, fifty and fifty, in caves, and how I fed them with bread and water?
N'a-t-on point dit à mon Seigneur ce que je fis quand Izebel tuait les Prophètes de l'Eternel, comment j'en cachai cent, cinquante dans une caverne, et cinquante dans une autre, et les y nourris de pain et d'eau?
14 And now you say: ‘Go and tell your lord that Elijah is here,’ so that he may kill me!”
Et maintenant tu dis, va; [et] dis à ton Seigneur, voici Elie; car il me tuera.
15 And Elijah said, “As the Lord of hosts lives, before whose face I stand, this day I will appear to him.”
Mais Elie lui répondit: L'Eternel des armées, devant lequel je me tiens, est vivant, que certainement je me montrerai aujourd'hui à Achab.
16 Therefore, Obadiah went away to meet Ahab, and he reported to him. And Ahab went to meet Elijah.
Abdias donc s'en alla pour rencontrer Achab, et il lui fit entendre le tout; puis Achab alla au devant d'Elie.
17 And when he had seen him, he said, “Are you the one who is disturbing Israel?”
Et aussitôt qu'Achab eut vu Elie, il lui dit: N'es-tu pas celui qui trouble Israël?
18 And he said: “I have not troubled Israel. But it is you, and the house of your father, who have abandoned the commandments of the Lord, and have followed the Baals.
Et [Elie] lui répondit: Je n'ai point troublé Israël; mais [c'est] toi et la maison de ton père [qui avez troublé Israël], en ce que vous avez abandonné les commandements de l'Eternel, et que vous avez marché après les Bahalins.
19 Yet truly now, send and gather to me all of Israel, on Mount Carmel, with the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal, and the four hundred prophets of the sacred groves, who eat from the table of Jezebel.”
Or maintenant envoie, et fais assembler vers moi tout Israël sur la montagne de Carmel, avec les quatre cent cinquante prophètes de Bahal, et les quatre cents prophètes des bocages qui mangent à la table d'Izebel.
20 Ahab sent to all the sons of Israel, and he gathered together the prophets on mount Carmel.
Ainsi Achab envoya vers tous les enfants d'Israël, et il assembla ces prophètes-là sur la montagne de Carmel.
21 Then Elijah, drawing near to all the people, said: “How long will you waver between two sides? If the Lord is God, follow him. But if Baal is, then follow him.” And the people did not respond a word to him.
Puis Elie s'approcha de tout le peuple, et dit: Jusqu'à quand clocherez-vous des deux côtés? Si l'Eternel est Dieu, suivez-le; mais si Bahal [est Dieu], suivez-le. Et le peuple ne lui répondit pas un seul mot.
22 And Elijah said again to the people: “I alone remain as a prophet of the Lord. But the prophets of Baal are four hundred and fifty men.
Alors Elie dit au peuple: Je suis demeuré seul Prophète de l'Eternel; et les prophètes de Bahal [sont au nombre de] quatre cent cinquante.
23 Let two oxen be given to us. And let them choose one ox for themselves, and, cutting it into pieces, let them set it on the wood. But they may not place fire under it. And I will prepare the other ox, and set it on the wood. But I will not place fire under it.
Or qu'on nous donne deux veaux, qu'ils en choisissent l'un pour eux, qu'ils le coupent en pièces, et qu'ils le mettent sur du bois; mais qu'ils n'y mettent point de feu; et je préparerai l'autre veau, je le mettrai sur du bois, et je n'y mettrai point de feu.
24 Call upon the names of your gods. And I will call on the name of my Lord. And the God who will have heeded with fire, let him be God.” And in response, all the people said, “Excellent proposition.”
Puis invoquez le nom de vos dieux, et moi j'invoquerai le Nom de l'Eternel; et que le Dieu qui aura exaucé par feu, soit [reconnu pour] Dieu. Et tout le peuple répondit et dit: C'est bien dit.
25 Then Elijah said to the prophets of Baal: “Choose for yourselves one ox, and prepare it first. For you are many. And call on the names of your gods, but do not place fire under it.”
Et Elie dit aux Prophètes de Bahal: Choisissez un veau, et préparez-le les premiers; car vous êtes en plus grand nombre, et invoquez le nom de vos dieux; mais n'y mettez point de feu.
26 And when they had taken an ox, which he had given to them, they prepared it. And they called on the name of Baal, from morning even until midday, saying, “O Baal, heed us.” And there was no voice, nor did anyone respond. And so they leaped upon the altar that they had made.
Ils prirent donc un veau qu'on leur donna, ils l'apprêtèrent, et ils invoquèrent le nom de Bahal depuis le matin jusqu'à midi, en disant: Bahal exauce-nous! Mais il n'y avait ni voix ni réponse, et ils sautaient par dessus l'autel qu'on avait fait.
27 And when it was now midday, Elijah ridiculed them, saying: “Cry out with a louder voice. For he is a god, and perhaps he is talking, or at an inn, or on a journey, or certainly he may be asleep, and must be awakened.”
Et sur le midi Elie se moquait d'eux, et disait: Criez à haute voix, car il est dieu; mais il pense à quelque chose, ou il est après quelque affaire, ou il est en voyage; peut-être qu'il dort; et il s'éveillera.
28 Then they cried out with a loud voice, and they cut themselves, in accord with their ritual, with knives and lancets, until they were entirely covered in blood.
Ils criaient donc à haute voix, et ils se faisaient des incisions avec des couteaux, et des lancettes; selon leur coutume, en sorte que le sang coulait sur eux.
29 Then, after midday had passed, and they were prophesying, the time had arrived when the sacrifice is usually offered. And there was no voice heard, neither did anyone heed or respond to the praying.
Et quand le midi fut passé, et qu'ils eurent fait les prophètes jusqu'au temps qu'on offre l'oblation, sans qu'il y eût ni voix, ni réponse, ni apparence aucune qu'on eût égard à ce qu'ils faisaient;
30 Elijah said to all the people, “Draw near to me.” And as the people were drawing near to him, he repaired the altar of the Lord, which had been torn down.
Elie dit alors à tout le peuple: Approchez-vous de moi. Et tout le peuple s'approcha de lui, et il répara l'autel de l'Eternel, qui était démoli.
31 And he took twelve stones, in accord with the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord came, saying, “Israel shall be your name.”
Puis Elie prit douze pierres, selon le nombre des Tribus des enfants de Jacob, auquel la parole de l'Eternel avait été adressée, en disant: Israël sera ton nom.
32 And he built from the stones an altar to the name of the Lord. And he made a trench for water, like two furrows of plowed land, all around the altar.
Et il rebâtit de ces pierres l'autel au Nom de l'Eternel; puis il fit un conduit de la capacité de deux sats de semence à l'entour de l'autel.
33 And he arranged the wood, and he cut the ox into pieces, and he placed it on the wood.
Il rangea le bois, il coupa le veau en pièces, et il le mit sur le bois.
34 And he said, “Fill four containers with water, and pour it over the holocaust, and over the wood.” And again, he said, “Do this a second time.” And when they had done it a second time, he said, “Do it also a third time.” And they did so a third time.
Puis il dit: Emplissez quatre cruches d'eau, et les versez sur l'holocauste, et sur le bois. Puis il leur dit: Faites-le encore pour la deuxième fois; et ils le firent pour la deuxième fois. De nouveau il leur dit: Faites-le encore pour la troisième fois; et ils le firent pour la troisième fois;
35 And the water was running down around the altar, and the pit of the trench was filled with water.
De sorte que les eaux allaient à l'entour de l'autel; et il remplit même le conduit d'eau.
36 And when it was now time for the holocaust to be offered, the prophet Elijah, drawing near, said: “O Lord, God of Abraham, and Isaac, and Israel, reveal this day that you are the God of Israel, and that I am your servant, and that I have acted, in all these things, in accord with your precept.
Et au temps qu'on offre l'oblation, Elie le Prophète s'approcha, et dit: Ô Eternel! Dieu d'Abraham, d'Isaac, et d'Israël! [fais] qu'on connaisse aujourd'hui que tu es Dieu en Israël, et que je suis ton serviteur, et que j'ai fait toutes ces choses, selon ta parole.
37 Heed me, O Lord, heed me, so that this people may learn that you are the Lord God, and that you have converted their heart again.”
Exauce-moi, ô Eternel! exauce-moi; et [fais] que ce peuple connaisse que tu es l'Eternel Dieu, et que c'est toi qui auras fait retourner leurs cœurs en arrière.
38 Then the fire of the Lord fell down and devoured the holocaust, and the wood, and the stones, and even the dust, and it absorbed the water that was in the trench.
Alors le feu de l'Eternel tomba, et consuma l'holocauste, le bois, les pierres, et la poudre, et huma toute l'eau qui était au conduit.
39 And when all the people had seen it, they fell upon their face, and they said: “The Lord himself is God! The Lord himself is God!”
Et tout le peuple voyant cela, tomba sur son visage, et dit: C'est l'Eternel qui est Dieu; c'est l'Eternel qui est Dieu.
40 And Elijah said to them, “Apprehend the prophets of Baal, and do not let even one of them escape.” And when they had apprehended them, Elijah led them down to the torrent Kishon, and he put them to death there.
Et Elie leur dit: Saisissez les Prophètes de Bahal, [et] qu'il n'en échappe pas un. Ils les saisirent donc, et Elie les fit descendre au torrent de Kison, et les fit égorger là.
41 And Elijah said to Ahab “Ascend; eat and drink. For there is the sound of an abundance of rain.”
Puis Elie dit à Achab: Monte, mange, et bois; car il y a un son bruyant de pluie.
42 Ahab ascended, so that he might eat and drink. But Elijah ascended to the top of Carmel, and bending down to the ground, he placed his face between his knees.
Ainsi Achab monta pour manger et pour boire; et Elie monta au sommet du Carmel, et se penchant contre terre, il mit son visage entre ses genoux;
43 And he said to his servant, “Ascend, and gaze out toward the sea.” And when he had ascended, and had contemplated, he said, “There is nothing.” And again, he said to him, “Return seven times.”
Et il dit à son serviteur: Monte maintenant, [et] regarde vers la mer. Il monta donc, et regarda, et dit: Il n'y a rien. Et [Elie lui] dit: Retournes-y par sept fois.
44 And at the seventh time, behold, a little cloud ascended from the sea like the footstep of a man. And he said: “Ascend, and say to Ahab, ‘Yoke your chariot, and descend; otherwise, the rain may prevent you.’”
A la septième fois, il dit: Voilà une petite nuée comme la paume de la main d'un homme, laquelle monte de la mer. Alors [Elie lui] dit: Monte, et dis à Achab: Attelle [ton chariot], et descends, de peur que la pluie ne te surprenne.
45 And as he was turning himself this way and that, behold, the heavens were darkened, and there were clouds and wind, and a great rainstorm occurred. And so Ahab, going up, went away to Jezreel.
Et il arriva que les cieux s'obscurcirent de tous côtés de nuées, [accompagnées] de vent, et il y eut une grande pluie; et Achab monta sur son chariot, et vint à Jizréhel.
46 And the hand of the Lord was upon Elijah. And cinching his waist, he ran before Ahab, until he arrived at Jezreel.
Et la main de l'Eternel fut sur Elie, qui s'étant retroussé sur les reins, courut devant Achab, jusqu'à l'entrée de Jizréhel.
