1 Chronicles 14

1 Also, Hiram, the king of Tyre, sent messengers to David, and cedar wood, and artisans of walls and of wood, so that they might build a house for him.

Chirom, de koning van Tyrus, zond gezanten tot David; ook cederhout, timmerlieden en steenhouwers, om voor hem een paleis te bouwen.

2 And David realized that the Lord had confirmed him as king over Israel, and that his kingdom had been lifted up over his people Israel.

Zo begreep David, dat Jahweh hem tot koning van Israël had bevestigd, en dat Hij zijn koningschap verheven had terwille van zijn volk Israël.

3 Also, David took other wives in Jerusalem. And he conceived sons and daughters.

Ook te Jerusalem nam David nog vrouwen, en kreeg hij nog meer zonen en dochters.

4 And these are the names of those who were born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua and Shobab, Nathan and Solomon,

Hier volgen de namen van hen, die hem te Jerusalem geboren werden: Sjammóea, Sjobab, Natan, Salomon,

5 Ibhar, and Elishua, and Elpelet,

Jibchar, Elisjóea, Elpélet,

6 as well as Nogah, and Nepheg, and Japhia,

Nóga, Néfeg, Jafia,

7 Elishama, and Beeliada, and Eliphelet.

Elisjama, Beëljada en Elifélet.

8 Then, hearing that David had been anointed as king over all of Israel, all the Philistines ascended so that they might seek him. But when David had heard of it, he went out to meet them.

Maar toen de Filistijnen vernamen, dat men David tot koning van heel Israël had gezalfd, trokken alle Filistijnen op, om zich van David meester te maken. Bij het vernemen hiervan ging David hun tegemoet.

9 Now the Philistines, arriving, spread out in the Valley of the Rephaim.

Toen de Filistijnen gekomen waren en zich over het dal der Refaïeten verspreid hadden,

10 And so David consulted the Lord, saying, “Shall I ascend to the Philistines, and will you deliver them into my hand?” And the Lord said to him, “Ascend, and I will deliver them into your hand.”

vroeg David aan God: Moet ik oprukken tegen de Filistijnen; zult Gij ze aan mij overleveren? Jahweh antwoordde: Trek op; want Ik lever ze aan u over.

11 And when they had ascended to Baal-perazim, David struck them there, and he said: “God has divided my enemies by my hand, just as waters are divided.” And therefore the name of that place was called Baal-perazim.

Zo kwam David bij Báal-Perasim; hij versloeg ze daar, en zeide: Zoals water door een dam breekt, zo heeft God mij door mijn vijanden heen laten breken! Vandaar dat die plaats Báal-Perasim heet.

12 And they left behind their gods in that place, and so David ordered them to be burned.

Ze lieten daar hun goden achter, die op bevel van David verbrand werden.

13 And then, at another time, the Philistines invaded, and they spread out in the valley.

Toen de Filistijnen zich andermaal over het dal der Refaïeten hadden verspreid,

14 And again, David consulted God. And God said to him: “You shall not ascend after them. Draw away from them. And you shall come against them opposite the balsam trees.

raadpleegde David God opnieuw. God antwoordde: Val niet aan, maar maak een omtrekkende beweging naar hun achterhoede, en ga op hen af van de kant der balsemstruiken.

15 And when you hear a sound approaching in the tops of the balsam trees, then you shall go forth to war. For God has gone forth before you, so that he may strike down the army of the Philistines.”

Als ge in de toppen der balsemstruiken het geruis van schreden verneemt, maak u dan gereed; want dan gaat God u vóór, om het leger der Filistijnen te verslaan.

16 Therefore, David did just as God had instructed him. And he struck down the army of the Philistines, from Gibeon as far as Gazera.

David deed juist zoals God het hem bevolen had, en het leger der Filistijnen werd verslagen van Gibon tot Gézer.

17 And the name of David became well-known in all the regions. And the Lord placed the fear of him over all the nations.

Vandaar dat de naam van David in alle landen bekend werd, en door de hulp van Jahweh alle volken ontzag voor hem kregen.
