Job 39
1 [Say] if you know the time of the bringing forth of the wild goats of the rock, and [if] you have marked the calving of the hinds:
Sais-tu le temps où mettent bas les bouquetins des rochers? As-tu observé les douleurs des biches?
2 and [if] you has have numbered the full months of their being with young, and [if] you have relieved their pangs:
As-tu compté les mois qu’elles accomplissent, et connais-tu le temps où elles mettent bas?
3 and have reared their young without fear; and will you loosen their pangs?
Elles se courbent, elles enfantent leur portée, elles se délivrent de leurs douleurs.
4 Their young will break forth; they will be multiplied with offspring: [their young] will go forth, and will not return to them.
Leurs petits deviennent forts, ils grandissent dans les champs, ils s’en vont et ne reviennent pas à elles.
5 And who is he that sent forth the wild ass free? and who loosed his bands?
Qui a lâché l’âne sauvage? qui a délié les liens de l’onagre,
6 whereas I made his habitation the wilderness, and the salt land his coverts.
Auquel j’ai donné le désert pour maison, et la terre salée pour demeure?
7 He laughs to scorn the multitude of the city, and hears not the chiding of the tax-gatherer.
Il se rit du tumulte de la ville, il n’entend pas le cri du conducteur.
8 He will survey the mountains [as] his pasture, and he seeks after every green thing.
Il parcourt les montagnes pour trouver sa pâture, et il est en quête de tout ce qui est vert.
9 And will the unicorn be willing to serve you, or to lie down at your manger?
Le buffle voudra-t-il être à ton service? Passera-t-il la nuit auprès de ta crèche?
10 And will you bind his yoke with thongs, or will he plough furrows for you in the plain?
Attacheras-tu le buffle par sa corde dans le sillon? Hersera-t-il les vallées après toi?
11 And do you trust him, because his strength is great? and will you commit your works to him?
Auras-tu confiance en lui, parce que sa force est grande, et lui abandonneras-tu ton labeur?
12 And will you believe that he will return to you your seed, and bring [it] in [to] your threshing floor?
Te fieras-tu à lui pour rentrer ce que tu as semé, et rassemblera-t-il [le blé] dans ton aire?
13 The peacock has a beautiful wing: if the stork and the ostrich conceive, [it is worthy of notice],
L’aile de l’autruche bat joyeusement: ce sont les plumes et le plumage de la cigogne;
14 for [the ostrich] will leave her eggs in the ground, and warm them on the dust,
Toutefois elle abandonne ses œufs à la terre et les chauffe sur la poussière,
15 and has forgotten that the foot will scatter them, and the wild beasts of the field trample them.
Et elle oublie que le pied peut les écraser et la bête des champs les fouler;
16 She has hardened [herself] against her young ones, as though [she bereaved] not herself: she labours in vain without fear.
Elle est dure avec ses petits comme s’ils n’étaient pas à elle; son labeur est vain, sans qu’elle s’en émeuve.
17 For God has withholden wisdom from her, and not given her a portion in understanding.
Car Dieu l’a privée de sagesse, et ne lui a pas départi l’intelligence.
18 In her season she will lift herself on high; she will scorn the horse and his rider.
Quand elle s’enlève, elle se moque du cheval et de celui qui le monte.
19 Hast you invested the horse with strength, and clothed his neck with terror?
Est-ce toi qui as donné au cheval sa force? Est-ce toi qui as revêtu son cou d’une crinière flottante?
20 And have you clad him in perfect armour, and made his breast glorious with courage?
Est-ce toi qui le fais bondir comme la sauterelle? Son ronflement magnifique est terrible.
21 He paws exulting in the plain, and goes forth in strength into the plain.
Il creuse [le sol] dans la plaine et se réjouit de sa force; il sort à la rencontre des armes;
22 He laughs to scorn a king as he meets him, and will by no means turn back from the sword.
Il se rit de la frayeur et ne s’épouvante pas, et il ne se tourne pas devant l’épée.
23 The bow and sword resound against him; and [his] rage will swallow up the ground:
Sur lui retentit le carquois, brillent la lance et le javelot.
24 and he will not believe until the trumpet sounds.
Frémissant et agité, il dévore le sol, et ne peut se contenir quand sonne la trompette.
25 And when the trumpet sounds, he says, Aha! and afar off he smells the war with prancing and neighing.
Au bruit de la trompette, il dit: Ha! ha! et de loin il flaire la bataille, le tonnerre des chefs et le tumulte.
26 And does the hawk remain steady by your wisdom, having spread out her wings unmoved, looking towards the region of the south?
Est-ce par ton intelligence que l’épervier prend son essor et qu’il étend ses ailes vers le midi?
27 And does the eagle rise at your command, and the vulture remain sitting over his nest,
Est-ce à ta parole que l’aigle s’élève et qu’il bâtit haut son aire?
28 on a crag of a rock, and in a secret [place]?
Il demeure dans les rochers et y fait son habitation, sur la dent du rocher et sur les hautes cimes.
29 Thence he seeks food, his eyes observe from far.
De là il épie sa nourriture, ses yeux regardent dans le lointain.
30 And his young ones roll themselves in blood, and wherever the carcasses may be, immediately they are found.
Ses petits sucent le sang, et là où sont les tués, là il est.
