Jeremias 43
1 IN THE FOURTH YEAR OF JOAKIM son of Josias king of Juda, the word of the Lord came to me, saying,
La quatrième année du règne de Joakim, fils de Josias, la parole du Seigneur vint à moi, disant:
2 Take you a roll of a book, and write upon it all the words which I spoke to you against Jerusalem, and against Juda, and against all the nations, from the day when I spoke to you, from the days of Josias king of Juda, even to this day.
Prends une feuille d'un livre, et écris sur cette feuille toutes les paroles que je t'ai dites contre Jérusalem, contre Juda, et contre toute la nation, à partir du jour ou je t'ai parlé, du temps de Josias, roi de Juda, jusqu'à ce jour.
3 Perhaps the house of Juda will hear all the evils which I purpose to do to them; that they may turn from their evil way; and [so] I will be merciful to their iniquities and their sins.
Peut-être la maison de Juda fera-t-elle attention à tous les maux que j'ai résolu de leur faire, afin qu'ils se détournent de leur mauvaise voie, et je serai miséricordieux pour leurs iniquités et leurs péchés.
4 So Jeremias called Baruch the son of Nerias: and he wrote from the mouth of Jeremias all the words of the Lord, which he had spoken to him, on a roll of a book.
Et Jérémie appela Baruch, fils de Nérias; et celui-ci écrivit, de la bouche même de Jérémie, sur les feuilles du livre, toutes les paroles que le Seigneur lui avait dites.
5 And Jeremias commanded Baruch, saying, I am in prison; I can’t enter into the house of the Lord:
Et Jérémie donna ses ordres à Baruch, disant: Je suis surveillé, et je ne puis entrer dans le temple du Seigneur.
6 so you shall read in this roll in the ears of the people in the house of the Lord, on the fast day; and in the ears of all Juda that come out of their cities, you shall read to them.
C'est donc toi qui liras cet écrit aux oreilles du peuple, dans le temple du Seigneur, le jour du jeûne, et tu feras cette lecture aux oreilles de tous ceux de Juda, qui sont venus de leurs villes.
7 Peradventure their supplication will come before the Lord, and they will turn from their evil way: for great is the wrath and the anger of the Lord, which he has pronounced against this people.
Peut-être leur prière touchera-t-elle de compassion la face du Seigneur, et se détourneront-ils de leur mauvaise voie; car grande est la colère que le Seigneur a dénoncée contre ce peuple.
8 And Baruch did according to all that Jeremias commanded him—reading in the book the words of the Lord in the Lord's house.
Et Baruch fit tout ce que lui avait commandé Jérémie, et il lut dans le livre les paroles du Seigneur, dans le temple du Seigneur.
9 And it came to pass in the eighth year of king Joakim, in the ninth month, all the people in Jerusalem, and the house of Juda, proclaimed a fast before the Lord.
En la huitième année du règne de Joakim, dans le temple du Seigneur, la maison de Juda s'étant rassemblée pour le jeûne en Jérusalem, devant le Seigneur,
10 And Baruch read in the book the words of Jeremias in the house of the Lord, in the house of Gamarias son of Saphan the scribe, in the upper court, in the entrance of the new gate of the house of the Lord, and in the ears of all the people.
Baruch lut l'écrit contenant la parole de Jérémie, dans le temple du Seigneur, en la demeure de Gamarias, fils de Saphan le scribe, dans les parvis du Seigneur, sous le portique de la porte neuve du temple, aux oreilles de tout le peuple.
11 And Michaeas the son of Gamarias the son of Saphan heard all the words of the Lord, out of the book.
Et Michée, fils de Gamarias, fils de Saphan, entendit toutes les paroles du Seigneur contenues dans l'écrit;
12 And he went down to the king's house, into the house of the scribe: and, behold, there were sitting there all the princes, Elisama the scribe, and Dalaeas the son of Selemias, and Jonathan the son of Acchobor, and Gamarias the son of Saphan, and Sedekias the son of Ananias, and all the princes.
Et il descendit au palais du roi, en la demeure du scribe; et voilà que tous les princes y siégeaient; il y avait: Élisama le scribe, et Dahlias, fils de Sélémias, et Jonathan, fils d'Acchobor, et Gamarias, fils de Saphan, et Sédécias, fils d'Ananie, et tous les princes.
13 And Michaeas reported to them all the words which he had heard Baruch reading in the ears of the people.
Et Michée leur rapporta toutes les paroles qu'il avait entendues, pendant que Baruch les lisait aux oreilles du peuple.
14 And all the princes sent to Baruch son of Nerias Judin the son of Nathanias, the son of Selemias, the son of Chusi, saying, Take in your hand the roll in which you read in the ears of the people, and come. So Baruch took the roll, and went down to them.
Et tous les princes envoyèrent à Baruch, fils de Nérias, Judi, fils de Nathanie, fils de Sélémias, fils de Chusi, disant: Prends à ta main l'écrit que tu as lu aux oreilles du peuple, et viens; et Baruch prit l'écrit, et il descendit près d'eux.
15 And they said to him, Read [it] again in our ears. And Baruch read [it].
Et ils lui dirent: Relis-le à nos oreilles; et Baruch le lut.
16 And it came to pass, when they [had] heard all the words, [that] they took counsel each with his neighbour, and said, Let us by all means tell the king all these words.
Il arriva qu'après avoir oui ces paroles ils se consultèrent entre eux, et dirent: Rapportons au roi toutes ces paroles.
17 And they asked Baruch, saying, Where did you write all these words?
Et ils questionnèrent Baruch, disant: Où as-tu écrit ces paroles?
18 And Baruch said, Jeremias told me from his [own] mouth all these words, and I wrote them in a book.
Et Baruch dit: Jérémie de sa bouche m'a dit toutes ces paroles, et je les ai écrites en un livre.
19 And they said to Baruch, Go, and hide, you and Jeremias; let no man know where you [are].
Et ils dirent à Baruch: Va, et cachez-vous, toi et Jérémie, et que nul homme ne sache où vous êtes.
20 And they went in to the king into the court, and gave the roll [to one] to keep in the house of Elisama; and they told the king all these words.
Et ils entrèrent auprès du roi, dans son palais, et ils donnèrent l'écrit à l'un d'eux pour le garder, dans la demeure d'Élisama, et ils rapportèrent au roi toutes ces choses.
21 And the king sent Judin to fetch the roll: and he took it out of the house of Elisama: and Judin read in the ears of the king, and in the ears of all the princes who stood round the king.
Et le roi envoya Judi prendre l'écrit, et il le prit dans la maison d'Elisama; et Judi se mit à le lire aux oreilles du roi et de tous les princes qui se tenaient autour du roi.
22 Now the king was sitting in the winter house: and [there was] a fire on the hearth before him.
Et le roi était assis dans son appartement d'hiver, et il y avait un grand brasier devant lui.
23 And it came to pass when Judin had read three or four leaves, he cut them off with a penknife, and cast [them] into the fire that was on the hearth, until the whole roll was consumed in the fire that was on the hearth.
Et il arriva que, quand Judi eut lu trois ou quatre pages, le roi coupa les feuilles avec le canif du scribe, et les jeta dans le feu du brasier, et elle fut tout entière brûlée par le feu.
24 And the king and his servants that heard all these words sought not [the Lord], and tore not their garments.
Or, ni le roi ni ses serviteurs, en écoutant ces paroles, ne cherchèrent le Seigneur, et ils ne déchirèrent point leurs vêtements.
25 But Elnathan and Godolias suggested to the king that he should burn the roll.
Et ce furent Elnathan et Godolias qui suggérèrent au roi de brûler l'écrit.
26 And the king commanded Jeremeel the king's son, and Saraeas the son of Esriel, to take Baruch and Jeremias: but they were hidden.
Et le roi prescrivit à Jéréméhel, fils du roi, et à Saraïas, fils d'Esrihel, de prendre Baruch et Jérémie, mais ils étaient cachés.
27 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremias, after the king had burnt the roll, [even] all the words which Baruch wrote from the mouth of Jeremias, saying,
Et la parole du Seigneur vint à Jérémie après que le roi eut brûlé la feuille, et toutes les prophéties que Baruch avait écrites de sa bouche, disant:
28 Again take you another roll, and write all the words that were on the roll, which king Joakim has burnt.
Prends une autre feuille, et écris toutes les paroles qui étaient sur la première, et que le roi Joakim a brûlées,
29 And you shall say, Thus says the Lord; You have burnt this roll, saying, Why have you written therein, saying, The king of Babylon shall certainly come in, and destroy this land, and man and cattle shall fail from off it?
Et dis: Voici ce que dit le Seigneur: Tu as brûlé cette feuille, disant: Pourquoi as-tu écrit sur cette feuille de telles paroles? Le roi de Babylone viendra, et entrera dans cette terre, et il la dévastera, et il ne s'y trouvera plus ni homme ni bétail.
30 Therefore thus says the Lord concerning Joakim king of Juda; He shall not have [a man] to sit on the throne of David: and his carcass shall be cast forth in the heat by day, and in the frost by night.
Et à causa de cela, voici ce que dit le Seigneur sur Joakim, roi de Juda: Il n'aura point de fils solidement assis sur le trône de David; quant à lui, son cadavre sera exposé à la chaleur des jours et à la fraîcheur des nuits.
31 And I will visit him, and his family, and his servants: and I will bring upon him, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and upon the land of Juda, all the evils which I spoke of to them; and they listened not.
Et je le visiterai, lui, et sa race, et ses serviteurs, et j'amènerai sur lui et sur les habitants de Jérusalem, et sur la terre de Juda, tous les maux que je leur ai promis et qu'ils n'ont pas écoutés.
32 And Baruch took another roll, and wrote upon it from the mouth of Jeremias all the words of the book which Joakim had burnt: and there were yet more words added to it like the former.
Et Baruch prit une autre feuille, et il y écrivit de la bouche de Jérémie toutes les paroles de l'écrit qu'avait brûlé Joakim, et ils y ajoutèrent beaucoup d'autres paroles semblables.
