Esias 17

1 THE WORD AGAINST DAMASCUS. Behold, Damascus shall be taken away from amongst cities, and shall become a ruin;

Voilà que Damas va être retranchée du nombre des villes; elle sera en ruines,

2 abandoned for ever, to [be] a fold and resting-place for flocks, and there shall be none to go after them.

Abandonnée pour toujours; les menus troupeaux s'y reposeront, et nul ne sera là pour les en chasser.

3 And she shall no longer be a strong place for Ephraim to flee to, and there shall no longer be a kingdom in Damascus, or a remnant of Syrians; for you are no better than the children of Israel, [even] than their glory; thus says the Lord of hosts.

Et il n'y aura plus de forteresse où Ephraïm puisse se réfugier; et il n'y aura plus de royauté pour Damas, ni pour le reste des Syriens. Car tu ne vaux pas mieux que les fils d'Israël; ta gloire ne vaut pas mieux que leur gloire: voilà ce que dit le Seigneur des armées.

4 There shall be in that day a failure of the glory of Jacob, and the riches of his glory shall be shaken.

En ce jour, la gloire de Jacob sera obscurcie, et les richesses qui font sa gloire seront ébranlées.

5 And it shall be as if one should gather standing corn, and reap the grain of the ears; and it shall be as if one should gather ears in a rich valley;

Et ce sera comme lorsque un homme glane ou ramasse les grains des épis dans une vallée féconde.

6 and [as if] there should be left stubble therein, or [as it were] the berries of an olive tree, two or three on the topmost bough, or [as if] four or five should be left on their branches; thus says the Lord, the God of Israel.

Et des glanures y ont été laissées, comme les trois ou quatre olives de rebut qu'on laisse à la cime de l'arbre, comme les quatre ou cinq qui restent au bout des branches: voilà ce que dit le Seigneur, Dieu d'Israël.

7 In that day a man shall trust in him that made him, and his eyes shall have respect to the Holy One of Israel.

Ce jour-là, l'homme mettra sa confiance en son Créateur; il tournera ses yeux vers le Saint d'Israël.

8 And they shall not at all trust in their altars, nor in the works of their hands, which their fingers made; and they shall not look to the trees, nor to their abominations.

Et ils ne croiront plus à leurs autels, ni aux ouvrages de leurs mains que leurs doigts ont façonnés; ils ne regarderont plus leurs bois sacrés ni leurs abominations.

9 In that day your cities shall be deserted, as the Amorites and the Evaeans deserted [theirs], because of the children of Israel; and they shall be desolate.

En ce jour tes villes seront abandonnées, comme le furent celles des Amorrhéens et des Hévéens, en présence des fils d'Israël; et elles seront désertes,

10 Because you have forsaken God your Saviour, and have not been mindful of the Lord your helper; therefore shall you plant a false plant, and a false seed.

Parce que tu as délaissé Dieu ton Sauveur, et que tu ne t'es plus souvenu du Seigneur qui t'avait secouru; et, à cause de cela, tu planteras des arbres trompeurs et des graines infidèles.

11 In the day wherein you shall plant you shall be deceived; but if you sow in the morning, [the seed] shall spring up for a crop in the day wherein you shall obtain an inheritance, and as a man's father, you shall obtain an inheritance for your sons.

Le jour où tu planteras, tu seras déçu. Si tu sèmes le matin, ta semence fleurira pour être moissonnée le jour où tu laisseras ton héritage, et où, comme le père de l'homme, tu distribueras ton patrimoine à tes fils.

12 Woe [to] the multitude of many nations, as the swelling sea, so shall you be confounded; and the force of many nations shall sound like water;

Malheur à la multitude des nations! Comme une mer agitée, ainsi vous serez bouleversées; et leurs armes retentiront sur leur dos, comme des vagues.

13 many nations like much water, as when much water rushes violently: and they shall drive him away, and pursue him afar, as the dust of chaff when men winnow before the wind, and as a storm whirling the dust of the wheel.

Cette multitude ressemblera à des flots tumultueux, à des ondes emportées par le vent. Le Seigneur exterminera le peuple assyrien, et il le rejettera au loin, comme au moindre souffle vole la paille légère des vanneurs, ou le tourbillon de poussière que soulève un ouragan.

14 Towards evening, and there shall be grief; before the morning, and he shall not be. This is the portion of them that spoiled you, and the inheritance to them that robbed you of your inheritance.

Sa douleur durera jusqu'au soir, et avant l'aurore il ne sera plus. Tel sera le partage de ceux qui ont fait de vous leur proie; tel sera l'héritage de ceux qui ont pris possession de vous.
