Ecclesiastes 5
1 Keep your foot, whenever you go to the house of God; and [when you are] near to hear, let your sacrifice [be] better than the gift of fools: for they know not that they are doing evil.
Prends garde où tu mets le pied dans le temple du Seigneur, et approche pour écouter; ton offrande sera plus agréable que les dons des insensés, car ils ignoreront qu'ils font le mal.
2 Be not hasty with your mouth, and let not your heart be swift to utter anything before God; for God is in heaven above, and you upon earth: therefore let your words be few.
Ne te hâte point d'ouvrir la bouche; que ton cœur ne soit pas pressé de proférer des paroles en présence de Dieu. Car Dieu est au plus haut du ciel, et toi tu es sur la terre; c'est pourquoi parle sobrement.
3 For through the multitude of trial a dream comes; and a fool's voice is with a multitude of words.
Car le songe naît d'un excès d'inquiétude, et la voix de l'insensé naît de l'intempérance de sa langue.
4 Whenever you shall vow a vow to God, defer not to pay it; for [he has] no pleasure in fools: pay you therefore whatever you shall have vowed.
Lorsque tu auras fait un vœu au Seigneur, ne tarde pas à t'en acquitter; car le bon vouloir n'est pas dans les insensés. Rends donc à Dieu tout ce que tu Lui auras voué.
5 [It is] better that you should not vow, than that you should vow and not pay.
Mieux vaut n'avoir point fait de vœu, que d'en faire et ne point l'accomplir.
6 Suffer not your mouth to lead your flesh to sin; and say not in the presence of God, It was an error: lest God be angry at your voice, and destroy the works of your hands.
Ne permets pas à ta bouche de faire pécher ta chair; ne dis pas devant Dieu que tu ne savais pas, de peur que Dieu ne S'irrite de tes paroles, et qu'Il ne détruise les œuvres de tes mains.
7 For [there is evil] in a multitude of dreams and vanities and many words: but fear you God.
Tout cela encore est abondance de songes, de vanités et de paroles; pour toi, crains Dieu.
8 If you should see the oppression of the poor, and the wresting of judgement and of justice in the land, wonder not at the matter: for [there is] a high one to watch over him that is high, and high ones over them.
Si tu vois en une contrée le pauvre trompé, le jugement et la justice rendus par violence, n'en sois point surpris; car c'est un grand qui surveille un grand, et il y a plus grands encore au-dessus d'eux.
9 Also the abundance of the earth is for every one: the king [is dependent on] the tilled field.
L'abondance de la terre est pour tous, quand, sous un roi les champs sont cultivés.
10 He that loves silver shall not be satisfied with silver: and who has loved gain, in the abundance thereof? this is also vanity.
Celui qui aime l'argent ne sera pas rassasié par l'argent; et celui qui aime le profit, le sera-t-il dans l'abondance?
11 In the multitude of good they are increased that eat it: and what virtue has the owner, but the right of beholding [it] with his eyes?
Quand s'accroît la richesse, il y a plus de gens pour la manger; et quel profit acquiert celui qui la possède? Seulement il a le pouvoir de le voir le premier de ses yeux.
12 The sleep of a servant is sweet, whether he eat little or much: but to one who is satiated with wealth, there is none that suffers him to sleep.
Le dormir est doux au serviteur, qu'il ait mangé peu ou beaucoup; quant à celui qui regorge de richesses, rien ne le laisse sommeiller.
13 There is an infirmity which I have seen under the sun, [namely], wealth kept for its owner to his hurt.
Il est une maladie que j'ai vue sous le soleil: c'est la richesse gardée par celui qui la garde à son détriment.
14 And that wealth shall perish in an evil trouble: and [the man] begets a son, and there is nothing in his hand.
Ses richesses périront au milieu de cruelles inquiétudes; il a un fils, et il ne lui laissera rien dans la main.
15 As he came forth naked from his mother's womb, he shall return back as he came, and he shall receive nothing for his labour, that it should go [with him] in his hand.
Nu il est sorti du sein de sa mère; comme il est venu il s'en ira, sans rien recueillir de son labeur, pour l'emporter dans sa main.
16 And this is also an evil infirmity: for as he came, so also shall he return: and what is his gain, for which he vainly labours?
Et cela encore est une maladie mauvaise; car comme il est venu il s'en ira de même; et quel est donc ce profit pour lequel il a travaillé en l'air?
17 Yes, all his days are in darkness, and in mourning, and much sorrow, and infirmity, and wrath.
Et ainsi il a passé tous ses jours dans les ténèbres, dans la tristesse, dans la colère, dans la maladie et dans la haine.
18 Behold, I have seen good, that it is a fine thing [for a man] to eat and to drink, and to see good in all his labour in which he may labour under the sun, [all] the number of the days of his life which God has given to him: for it is his portion.
Voilà ce que j'ai vu de bien: c'est que l'homme mange et boive, et qu'il voie prospérer tout son labeur pour lequel il aura travaillé sous le soleil, tous les jours de sa vie que Dieu lui a donnés; car tel est son partage.
19 Yes, and [as for] every man to whom God has given wealth and possessions, and has given him power to eat thereof, and to receive his portion, and to rejoice in his labour; this is the gift of God.
Or tout homme à qui Dieu a donné richesse, possession, pouvoir de manger ses biens, de jouir de sa part, de se complaire en son labeur, a reçu un don de Dieu.
20 For he shall not much remember the days of his life; for God troubles him in the mirth of his heart.
Car celui-là ne se souviendra guère de la succession des jours de sa vie; Dieu l'en a distrait par la joie de son cœur.
