Kings I 4

1 And it came to pass in those days that the Philistines gathered themselves together against Israel to war; and Israel went out to meet them and encamped at Abenezer, and the Philistines encamped in Aphec.

La palabra de Samuel llegaba a todo Israel. Entonces Israel salió a enfrentar a los filisteos en batalla y acampó junto a Ebenezer. Los filisteos acamparon en Afec y

2 And the Philistines prepare to fight with Israel, and the battle was turned against them; and the men of Israel fell before the Philistines, and there were struck in the battle in the field four thousand men.

se dispusieron en orden de batalla contra Israel. La batalla fue feroz, e Israel fue derrotado por los filisteos. Unos 4.000 hombres de sus filas fueron matados en el campo de batalla.

3 And the people came to the camp, and the elders of Israel said, Why has the Lord caused us to fall this day before the Philistines? let us take the ark of our God out of Selom, and let it proceed from the midst of us, and it shall save us from the hand of our enemies.

Cuando el pueblo regresó al campamento, los ancianos de Israel preguntaron: ¿Por qué Yavé nos hirió hoy ante los filisteos? Traigámonos de Silo el Arca del Pacto de Yavé para que Él esté entre nosotros y nos salve de la mano de nuestros enemigos.

4 And the people sent to Selom, and they take thence the ark of the Lord who dwells between the cherubs: and both the sons of Heli, Ophni and Phinees, [were] with the ark.

El pueblo envió [gente] a Silo, y llevaron de allí el Arca del Pacto de Yavé de las huestes, Quien mora entre los querubines. Estaban allí los dos hijos de Elí, Ofni y Finees, con el Arca del Pacto de ʼElohim.

5 And it came to pass when the ark of the Lord entered into the camp, that all Israel cried out with a loud voice, and the earth resounded.

Cuando el Arca del Pacto de Yavé llegó al campamento, todo Israel gritó con tan grande júbilo que la tierra resonó.

6 And the Philistines heard the cry, and the Philistines said, What [is] this great cry in the camp of the Hebrews: and they understood that the ark of the Lord was come into the camp.

Cuando los filisteos oyeron el estruendo del júbilo dijeron: ¿Qué es este estruendo de gran clamor en el campamento de los hebreos? Y supieron que el Arca de Yavé llegó al campamento.

7 And the Philistines feared, and said, These are the Gods that are come to them into the camp.

Los filisteos tuvieron temor y dijeron: ¡Los ʼelohim llegaron al campamento! Y decían: ¡Ay de nosotros, porque nunca antes sucedió tal cosa!

8 Woe to us, O Lord, deliver us today for such a thing has not happened aforetime: woe to us, who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty Gods? these [are] the Gods that struck Egypt with every plague, and in the wilderness.

¡Ay de nosotros! ¿Quién nos librará de la mano de estos ʼelohim poderosos? ¡Éstos son los ʼelohim que golpearon a Egipto con toda plaga en el desierto!

9 Strengthen yourselves and behave yourselves like men, O you Philistines, that you may not serve the Hebrews as they have served us, but be you men and fight with them.

¡Filisteos, esfuércense y [demuestren que] son hombres, para que no sean esclavos de los hebreos como ellos fueron de ustedes! ¡Sean hombres y combatan!

10 And they fought with them; and the men of Israel fall, and they fled every man to his ten; and there was a very great slaughter; and there fell of Israel thirty thousand fighting men.

Los filisteos combatieron, e Israel fue derrotado. Cada hombre huyó a su tienda, y hubo una gran matanza, porque cayeron de Israel 30.000 hombres de a pie.

11 And the ark of God was taken, and both the sons of Heli, Ophni, and Phinees, died.

El Arca de ʼElohim fue capturada, y los dos hijos de Elí, Ofni y Finees, murieron.

12 And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the battle, and he came to Selom on that day: and his clothes [were] tore, and earth [was] upon his head.

Aquel mismo día, cierto hombre de Benjamín corrió desde el campo de batalla hasta Silo, con ropas rasgadas y tierra sobre su cabeza.

13 And he came, an behold, Heli was upon the seat by the gate looking along the way, for his heart was greatly alarmed for the ark of God: and the man entered into the city to bring tidings; and the city cried out.

Cuando llegó, allí Elí estaba sentado en una silla. Vigilaba con afán junto al camino, porque su corazón temblaba a causa del Arca de ʼElohim. Cuando aquel hombre llegó a la ciudad para informar, toda la ciudad dio gritos.

14 And Heli heard the sound of the cry, and said, What [is] the voice of this cry? and the men hasted and went in, and reported to Heli.

Cuando Elí oyó el estruendo del griterío, dijo: ¿Qué significa todo ese alboroto? Y aquel hombre se apresuró, llegó e informó a Elí.

15 Now Heli [was] ninety years old, and his eyes were fixed, and he saw not.

Elí tenía 98 años de edad y sus ojos estaban ya fijos, pues no podía ver.

16 And Heli said to them that stood round about him, What [is] the voice of this sound? And the man hasted and advanced to Heli, and said to him, I am he that is come out of the camp, and I have fled from the battle today: and Heli said, What [is] the even, [my] son?

Aquel hombre dijo a Elí: Yo vine de la batalla. Escapé. Y le preguntó: ¿Qué sucedió, hijo mío?

17 And they young man answered and said, The men of Israel fled from the face of the Philistines, and there was a great slaughter amongst the people, and both your sons are dead, and the ark of God is taken.

El mensajero respondió: Israel huyó de los filisteos, y hubo también una gran matanza entre el pueblo. También tus dos hijos, Ofni y Finees, murieron, y el Arca de ʼElohim fue capturada.

18 And it came to pass, when he mentioned the ark of God, that he fell from the seat backward near the gate, and his back was broken, and he died, for [he was] an old man and heavy: and he judged Israel twenty years.

Cuando mencionó el Arca de ʼElohim, aconteció que cayó de su silla hacia atrás, junto a la puerta. Se le quebró la nuca y murió, porque era hombre anciano y pesado. Él juzgó a Israel 40 años.

19 And his daughter-in-law the wife of Phinees [was] with child, [about] to bring forth; and she heard the tidings, that the ark of God was taken, and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead; and she wept and was delivered, for her pains came upon her.

Su nuera, la esposa de Finees, que estaba embarazada y cercana al parto, al escuchar la noticia de que el Arca de ʼElohim fue capturada y que su suegro y su esposo murieron, se agachó, pues le llegaron los dolores y dio a luz.

20 And in her time she was at the point of death; and the women that stood by her, said to her, Fear not, for you have born a son: but she answered not, and her heart did not regard it.

En el momento cuando moría, las que estaban junto a ella decían: No temas, porque diste a luz un hijo. Pero ella no respondió ni prestó atención.

21 And she called the child Uaebarchaboth, because of the ark of God, and because of her father-in-law, and because of her husband.

Y llamó al niño Icabod y dijo: ¡Traspasada es la gloria de Israel, porque el Arca de ʼElohim fue capturada! Su suegro y su esposo murieron.

22 And they said, The glory of Israel is departed, forasmuch as the ark of the Lord is taken.

Y dijo: ¡La gloria de Israel es traspasada, porque el Arca de ʼElohim fue capturada!
