Kings I 18
1 [And it came to pass when he had finished speaking to Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David and David loved him ] [as his own soul. ]
শৌলের সঙ্গে দাউদের কথাবার্তা শেষ হতে না হতেই যোনাথন দাউদের সঙ্গে একাত্ম হয়ে গেলেন, এবং তিনি দাউদকে নিজের মতো করে ভালোবাসলেন।
2 [And Saul took him in that day, and did not suffer him to return to his father's house. ]
সেদিন থেকেই শৌল দাউদকে নিজের কাছে রেখে দিলেন এবং তাঁকে ঘরে তাঁর পরিবারের কাছে ফিরে যেতে দেননি।
3 [And Jonathan and David made a covenant because he loved him as his own soul. ]
যোনাথনও দাউদের সঙ্গে এক চুক্তি করলেন, কারণ তিনি তাঁকে নিজের মতো করে ভালোবেসেছিলেন।
4 [And Jonathan stripped himself of his ] [upper garment, and gave it to David, and his mantle and all he had upon him, even to his sword and to his bow, and to his girdle. ]
যোনাথন তাঁর পরনের পোশাকটি খুলে দাউদকে দিলেন, সঙ্গে নিজের আলখাল্লাটি, এমনকি নিজের তরোয়াল, ধনুক ও কোমরবন্ধটিও দিয়ে দিলেন।
5 [And David went out withersoever Saul sent him, and ] [acted wisely, and Saul set him over the men of war, and he was pleasing in the eyes of all the people, and also in the eyes of the servants of Saul. ]
শৌল যে কোনো কাজের দায়িত্ব দিয়ে দাউদকে পাঠাতেন, তাতে তিনি এতটাই সফল হতেন যে শৌল সৈন্যদলে তাঁকে আরও উঁচু পদে নিযুক্ত করে দিলেন। এতে সৈনিকরা সবাই খুব খুশি হল ও শৌলের কর্মকর্তারাও খুব খুশি হল।
6 And there came out women in dances to meet David out of all the cities of Israel, with timbrels, and with rejoicing, and with cymbals.
দাউদ সেই ফিলিস্তিনীকে হত্যা করার পর যখন লোকজন ঘরে ফিরে আসছিল, তখন ইস্রায়েলের সব নগর থেকে স্ত্রীলোকেরা নাচ-গান করতে করতে, খঞ্জনি ও সুরবাহার বাজিয়ে আনন্দগান গাইতে গাইতে রাজা শৌলের সঙ্গে দেখা করতে বের হয়ে এল।
7 And the women began [the strain], and said, Saul has struck his thousands, and David his ten thousands.
নাচতে নাচতে তারা গাইল: “শৌল মারলেন হাজার হাজার, আর দাউদ মারলেন অযুত অযুত।”
8 And it seemed evil in the eyes of Saul concerning this matter, and he said, To David they have given ten thousands, and to me they have given thousands. [And what more can he have but the kingdom? ]
শৌলের খুব রাগ হল; এই গানের ধুয়া তাঁকে খুব অসন্তুষ্ট করল। “এরা দাউদকে অযুত অযুতের কথা বলে কৃতিত্ব দিয়েছে,” তিনি ভাবলেন, “কিন্তু আমার বিষয়ে শুধুই হাজার হাজার। পরে আর রাজ্য ছাড়া তার কী-ই বা পাওয়ার আছে?”
9 [And Saul eyed David from that day and onward. ]
আর সেই সময় থেকেই শৌল দাউদের উপর সজাগ দৃষ্টি রাখতে শুরু করলেন।
10 [And it came to pass on the morrow that an evil spirit from God fell upon Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of his house. And David was playing on the harp with his hand, according to his daily custom. And Saul’s spear was in his hand. ]
পরদিনই ঈশ্বরের কাছ থেকে একটি মন্দ আত্মা সবলে শৌলের উপর নেমে এল। তিনি তাঁর বাড়িতে বসে ভাববাণী বলছিলেন, অন্যদিকে দাউদ সচরাচর যেমনটি করতেন, সেভাবে বীণা বাজিয়ে যাচ্ছিলেন। শৌলের হাতে ছিল একটি বর্শা
11 [And Saul took his spear and said, I will strike David even to the wall. But David escaped twice from his presence. ]
এবং “আমি দাউদকে দেওয়ালে গেঁথে ফেলব,” আপনমনে একথা বলে তিনি সেটি ছুঁড়ে দিলেন। কিন্তু দাউদ দু-দুবার তাঁর হাত ফসকে পালিয়ে গেলেন।
12 And Saul was alarmed on account of David.
শৌল দাউদকে ভয় পেতে শুরু করলেন, কারণ সদাপ্রভু দাউদের সঙ্গে ছিলেন কিন্তু শৌলকে ছেড়ে গিয়েছিলেন।
13 And he removed him from him, and made him a captain of a thousand for himself; and he went out and came in before the people.
অতএব তিনি দাউদকে নিজের কাছ থেকে সরিয়ে দিয়ে তাঁকে সহস্র-সেনাপতি পদে নিযুক্ত করলেন, এবং দাউদ যুদ্ধে সেনাবাহিনীর নেতৃত্ব দিলেন।
14 And David was prudent in all his ways, and the Lord was with him.
সবকাজেই তিনি মহাসাফল্য লাভ করলেন, কারণ সদাপ্রভু তাঁর সঙ্গে ছিলেন।
15 And Saul saw that he was very wise, and he was afraid of him.
শৌল তাঁকে এত বেশি সফল হতে দেখে তাঁকে ভয় করতে শুরু করলেন।
16 And all Israel and Juda loved David, because he came in and went out before the people.
কিন্তু ইস্রায়েল ও যিহূদার সব লোকজন দাউদকে ভালোবেসেছিল, কারণ যুদ্ধে তিনি তাদের নেতৃত্ব দিয়েছিলেন।
17 [And Saul said to David, Behold my elder daughter Merob, I will give her to you to Wife, only be you to me a mighty man and fight the wars of the Lord. And Saul said, Let not my hand be upon him, but the hand of the Philistines shall be upon him. ]
শৌল দাউদকে বললেন, “এই আমার বড়ো মেয়ে মেরব। আমি এর সঙ্গে তোমার বিয়ে দেব; তুমি শুধু নির্ভীকভাবে আমার সেবা করে যাও ও সদাপ্রভুর জন্য যুদ্ধ করে যাও।” কারণ শৌল মনে মনে বললেন, “আমি এর বিরুদ্ধে হাত উঠাব না। ফিলিস্তিনীরাই এ কাজটি করুক!”
18 [And David said to Saul, Who am I, and What is the life of my father’s family in Israel, that I should be the king’s son—in-law? ]
কিন্তু দাউদ শৌলকে বললেন, “আমি কে, আর ইস্রায়েলে আমার পরিবার বা আমার বংশই বা কী এমন, যে আমি রাজার জামাই হব?”
19 [But it came to pass at the time when Merob Saul’s daughter should have been given to David, that she was given to Israel the Mothulathite to wife. ]
অবশ্য যখন শৌলের মেয়ে মেরবকে দাউদের হাতে তুলে দেওয়ার সময় এল, তখন মেরবকে মহোলাতীয় অদ্রীয়েলের সঙ্গে বিয়ে দিয়ে দেওয়া হল।
20 And Melchol the daughter of Saul loved David; and it was told Saul, and the thing was pleasing in his eyes.
ইত্যবসরে আবার শৌলের মেয়ে মীখল দাউদের প্রেমে পড়ে গেলেন, আর শৌলকে যখন খবরটি জানানো হল, তিনি খুশিই হলেন।
21 And Saul said, I will give her to him, and she shall be a stumbling block to him. Now the hand of the Philistines was against Saul.
“আমি মীখলকে ওর হাতে তুলে দেব,” তিনি ভাবলেন, “এতে মীখল ওর কাছে এক ফাঁদ হয়ে দাঁড়াবে এবং ফিলিস্তিনীদের হাতও ওর বিরুদ্ধে উঠবে।” অতএব শৌল দাউদকে বললেন, “এখন দ্বিতীয়বার তোমার কাছে আমার জামাই হওয়ার সুযোগ এসেছে।”
22 And Saul charged his servants, saying, Speak you privately to David, saying, Behold, the king delights in you, and all his servants love you, and do you becomes the king's son-in-law.
পরে শৌল তাঁর কর্মচারীদের আদেশ দিলেন: “তোমরা গিয়ে গোপনে দাউদকে বলো, ‘দেখো, রাজামশাই তোমাকে পছন্দ করেন, আর তাঁর সব কর্মচারীও তোমাকে ভালোবাসে; এখন তুমি তাঁর জামাই হয়ে যাও।’”
23 And the servants of Saul spoke these words in the ears of David; and David said, [Is it] a light thing in your eyes to become son-in-law to the king? Whereas I [am] an humble man, an not honourable?
তারা এইসব কথা দাউদকে বলে শোনাল। কিন্তু দাউদ বললেন, “তোমাদের কি মনে হয় রাজামশায়ের জামাই হওয়া সামান্য ব্যাপার? আমি তো এক গরিব মানুষ ও আমাকে বিশেষ কেউ চেনেও না।”
24 And the servants of Saul reported to him according to these words, which David spoke.
শৌলের দাসেরা যখন দাউদের বলা কথাগুলি শৌলকে গিয়ে শোনাল,
25 And Saul said, Thus shall you speak to David, The king wants no gift but a hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to avenge himself on the kings enemies. Now Saul thought to cast him into the hands of the Philistines.
শৌল তখন উত্তর দিলেন, “দাউদকে গিয়ে বলো, ‘রাজামশাই আর কোনও কন্যাপণ চান না, শুধু ফিলিস্তিনীদের 100-টি লিঙ্গত্বক্ দিলেই হবে, যেন তাঁর শত্রুদের উপর প্রতিশোধ নেওয়া যায়।’” শৌল পরিকল্পনা করে রেখেছিলেন, যেন দাউদ ফিলিস্তিনীদের হাতেই মারা পড়েন।
26 And the servants of Saul report these words to David, and David was well pleased to become the son-in-law to the king.
কর্মকর্তারা যখন দাউদকে এসব কথা বলে শুনিয়েছিলেন, তিনি খুশিমনে রাজার জামাই হওয়ার জন্য প্রস্তুত হলেন। অতএব নিরূপিত সময় অতিবাহিত হওয়ার আগেই,
27 And David arose, and went, he and his men, and struck amongst the Philistines a hundred men: and he brought their foreskins, and he becomes the king's son-in-law, and [Saul] gives him Melchol his daughter to wife.
দাউদ তাঁর দলবল নিয়ে বাইরে বেরিয়ে গিয়ে 200 জন ফিলিস্তিনীকে হত্যা করে তাদের লিঙ্গত্বক্ নিয়ে এলেন। রাজামশায়ের কাছে তারা সেগুলি পূর্ণ সংখ্যায় গুনে দিল যেন দাউদ রাজার জামাই হতে পারেন। পরে শৌল তাঁর সঙ্গে নিজের মেয়ে মীখলের বিয়ে দিলেন।
28 And Saul saw that the Lord [was] with David, and [that] all Israel loved him.
শৌল যখন অনুভব করলেন যে সদাপ্রভু দাউদের সঙ্গে আছেন ও তাঁর মেয়ে মীখল দাউদকে ভালোবাসেন,
29 And he was yet more afraid of David.
তখন তিনি দাউদকে আরও বেশি ভয় করতে শুরু করলেন, এবং জীবনের বাকি দিনগুলি তিনি দাউদের শত্রু হয়েই থেকে গেলেন।
30 [And the chief of the Philistines went forth; and it came to pass that from the suficiency of their expedition David acted Wisely above all the servants of Saul; and his name was honoured exceedingly. ]
ফিলিস্তিনী সহস্র-সেনাপতিরা যুদ্ধ করেই যেতে থাকল, এবং যতবার তারা তা করত, শৌলের অন্যান্য কর্মকর্তাদের তুলনায় দাউদ আরও বেশি সাফল্য অর্জন করতেন, ও তাঁর নাম সুপরিচিত হয়ে গেল।
