Genesis 42
1 And Jacob having seen that there was a sale [of corn] in Egypt, said to his sons, Why are ye indolent?
Nghe nước Ai Cập có lúa, Gia-cốp bảo các con: “Sao các con cứ ngồi đó, nhịn đói mà nhìn nhau?
2 Behold, I have heard that there is corn in Egypt; go down thither, and buy for us a little food, that we may live, and not die.
Này, cha nghe bên Ai Cập có bán lúa, các con qua đó mua, để chúng ta khỏi chết.”
3 And the ten brethren of Joseph went down to buy corn out of Egypt.
Mười người anh Giô-sép lên đường qua Ai Cập mua lúa.
4 But [Jacob] sent not Benjamin, the brother of Joseph, with his brethren; for he said, Lest, haply, disease befall him.
Gia-cốp không cho Bên-gia-min, em Giô-sép, đi theo các anh, vì sợ bị nguy hiểm.
5 And the sons of Israel came to buy with those that came, for the famine was in the land of Chanaan.
Vậy, các con trai Ít-ra-ên đến Ai Cập mua lúa cùng với bao nhiêu người khác, vì xứ Ca-na-an cũng bị đói lớn.
6 And Joseph was ruler of the land; he sold to all the people of the land. And the brethren of Joseph, having come, did reverence to him, [bowing] with the face to the ground.
Lúc ấy, Giô-sép làm tể tướng nước Ai Cập, kiêm việc bán lúa cho dân chúng. Các anh Giô-sép đến quỳ gối, sấp mình xuống đất trước mặt ông.
7 And when Joseph saw his brethren, he knew them, and estranged himself from them, and spoke hard words to them; and said to them, Whence are ye come? And they said, Out of the land of Chanaan, to buy food.
Thấy họ, Giô-sép nhận ra ngay nhưng giả vờ không biết và gay gắt hỏi: “Các anh ở đâu tới?” Họ đáp: “Chúng tôi từ Ca-na-an đến mua lúa.”
8 And Joseph knew his brethren, but they knew not him.
Dù Giô-sép biết họ, họ vẫn không nhận ra ông.
9 And Joseph remembered his dream, which he saw; and he said to them, Ye are spies; to observe the marks of the land are ye come.
Nhớ lại giấc mơ về các anh ngày trước, ông quát: “Các anh làm gián điệp, đến đây do thám đất nước ta.”
10 But they said, Nay, Sir, we thy servants are come to buy food;
Họ phân trần: “Thưa ngài, các đầy tớ ngài đây chỉ đến mua lương thực.
11 we are all sons of one man; we are peaceable, thy servants are not spies.
Chúng tôi đều là anh em ruột, thuộc gia đình lương thiện, không phải là gián điệp.”
12 And he said to them, Nay, but ye are come to observe the marks of the land.
Giô-sép quả quyết: “Không, các anh chỉ đến đây do thám để biết rõ nhược điểm của đất nước này.”
13 And they said, We thy servants are twelve brethren, in the land of Chanaan; and, behold, the youngest is with our father to-day, but the other one is not.
Họ lại thưa: “Các đầy tớ ngài đây gồm mười hai người, anh em cùng cha, quê tại Ca-na-an. Hiện người út ở nhà với cha, còn một người mất tích.”
14 And Joseph said to them, This is it that I spoke to you, saying, ye are spies;
Giô-sép đáp: “Như ta đã nói, các anh làm gián điệp.
15 herein shall ye be manifested; by the health of Pharao, ye shall not depart hence, unless your younger brother come hither.
Đây là cách ta thử các anh. Ta thề trên mạng sống của vua Pha-ra-ôn, các anh chẳng được rời khỏi Ai Cập nếu em út các anh không đến đây.
16 Send one of you, and take your brother; and go ye to prison, till your words be clear, whether ye speak the truth or not; but, if not, by the health of Pharao, verily ye are spies.
Một người trong các anh phải trở về đem em út đến, còn tất cả sẽ bị giam vào ngục. Ta sẽ kiểm chứng lời khai của các anh. Nếu nói dối, chắc hẳn các anh là gián điệp.”
17 And he put them in prison three days.
Sau đó, Giô-sép giam họ trong ngục ba ngày.
18 And he said to them on the third day, This do, and ye shall live, for I fear God.
Ngày thứ ba, Giô-sép bảo họ: “Ta kính sợ Đức Chúa Trời, nên ta sẽ đối xử khoan hồng với các anh.
19 If ye be peaceable, let one of your brethren be detained in prison; but go ye, and carry back the corn ye have purchased.
Nếu các anh lương thiện, ta chỉ giam giữ một người, còn tất cả được về nhà, mang theo lương thực nuôi gia đình.
20 And bring your younger brother to me, and your words shall be believed; but, if not, ye shall die. And they did so.
Sau đó, các anh phải trở lại đây với người em út để xác nhận lời khai của các anh. Nếu các anh nói thật, các anh sẽ được trả tự do.” Họ vâng lệnh Giô-sép.
21 And each said to his brother, Yes, indeed, for we are in fault concerning our brother, when we disregarded the anguish of his soul, when he besought us, and we hearkened not to him; and therefore has this affliction come upon us.
Các anh em bảo nhau: “Chúng ta mắc họa vì có tội với em chúng ta. Lúc nó đau khổ tuyệt vọng van xin, chúng ta đã chẳng thương xót.”
22 And Ruben answered them, saying, Did I not speak to you, saying, Hurt not the boy, and ye heard me not? and, behold, his blood is required.
Ru-bên trách: “Tôi đã bảo đừng hại đứa trẻ mà các chú không nghe. Bây giờ chúng ta phải trả nợ máu.”
23 But they knew not that Joseph understood them; for there was an interpreter between them.
Họ không ngờ Giô-sép nghe và hiểu, vì lúc nói chuyện ông vẫn dùng người thông dịch.
24 And Joseph turned away from them, and wept; and again he came to them, and spoke to them; and he took Symeon from them, and bound him before their eyes.
Giô-sép bước ra ngoài khóc; sau đó ông quay lại và sai người trói Si-mê-ôn trước mặt họ.
25 And Joseph gave orders to fill their vessels with corn, and to return their money to each into his sack, and to give them provision for the way; and it was so done to them.
Ông ra lệnh cho đầy tớ đổ lúa vào bao các anh, để bạc lại trong mỗi bao, cũng cấp thêm lương thực đi đường.
26 And having put the corn on the asses, they departed thence.
Các anh em chất lúa trên lưng lừa và lên đường.
27 And one having opened his sack to give his asses fodder, at the place where they rested, saw also his bundle of money, for it was on the mouth of his sack.
Đến quán trọ, một người mở bao lúa cho lừa ăn, thấy bạc mình trong miệng bao,
28 And he said to his brethren, My money has been restored to me, and behold this is in my sack. And their heart was wonder-struck, and they were troubled, saying one to another, What is this that God has done to us?
liền gọi các anh em: “Này, sao người ta để bạc của tôi lại trong bao?” Họ kinh sợ, run rẩy, và bảo nhau: “Đức Chúa Trời làm gì cho chúng ta vậy?”
29 And they came to their father, Jacob, into the land of Chanaan, and reported to him all that had happened to them, saying,
Họ về nhà Gia-cốp, cha mình, tại xứ Ca-na-an, và tường trình mọi việc:
30 The man, the lord of the land, spoke harsh words to us, and put us in prison as spies of the land.
“Tể tướng nước Ai Cập nói rất gay gắt, tình nghi chúng con làm gián điệp.
31 And we said to him, We are men of peace, we are not spies.
Chúng con thưa: ‘Chúng tôi là người lương thiện, không phải gián điệp.
32 We are twelve brethren, sons of our father; one is not, and the youngest is with his father to-day in the land of Chanaan.
Chúng tôi có mười hai người, anh em cùng cha, một người mất tích, người út ở nhà với cha, tại xứ Ca-na-an.’
33 And the man, the lord of the land, said to us, Herein shall I know that ye are peaceable; leave one brother here with me, and having taken the corn ye have purchased for your family, depart.
Tể tướng bảo chúng con: ‘Đây là cách ta xét lời khai các anh. Hãy để một người ở đây làm con tin, còn các anh đem lương thực về nuôi gia đình.
34 And bring to me your younger brother; then I shall know that ye are not spies, but that ye are men of peace: and I will restore you your brother, and ye shall trade in the land.
Sau đó, các anh đưa em út đến để chứng tỏ các anh lương thiện, không làm gián điệp. Ta sẽ thả người kia và các anh được tự do đến xứ này mua lúa.’”
35 And it came to pass as they were emptying their sacks, there was each man's bundle of money in his sack; and they and their father saw their bundles of money, and they were afraid.
Khi các anh em mở bao đổ lúa ra, họ thấy bạc mỗi người vẫn còn trong bao; cả nhà đều sợ hãi.
36 And their father Jacob said to them, Ye have bereaved me. Joseph is not, Symeon is not, and will ye take Benjamin? all these things have come upon me.
Gia-cốp than trách: “Chúng mày làm mất con tao—Giô-sép và Si-mê-ôn—bây giờ còn muốn đem Bên-gia-min đi nữa. Sao tao khổ quá thế này!”
37 And Ruben spoke to his father, saying, Slay my two sons, if I bring him not to thee; give him into my hand, and I will bring him back to thee.
Ru-bên thưa: “Nếu con không đem em về, xin cha cứ giết hai đứa con của con. Cha giao em cho con, con xin chịu trách nhiệm.”
38 But he said, My son shall not go down with you, because his brother is dead, and he only has been left; and [suppose] it shall come to pass that he is afflicted by the way by which ye go, then ye shall bring down my old age with sorrow to Hades. (Sheol h7585)
Gia-cốp đáp: “Con tao sẽ không đi với chúng mày đâu. Anh nó chết, tao chỉ còn một mình nó. Nếu nó bị nguy hiểm dọc đường, lão già này sẽ sầu khổ mà chết.” (Sheol h7585)
