Genesis 42
1 And Jacob having seen that there was a sale [of corn] in Egypt, said to his sons, Why are ye indolent?
Or Giacobbe, vedendo che c’era del grano in Egitto, disse ai suoi figliuoli: “Perché vi state a guardare l’un l’altro?”
2 Behold, I have heard that there is corn in Egypt; go down thither, and buy for us a little food, that we may live, and not die.
Poi disse: “Ecco, ho sentito dire che c’è del grano in Egitto; scendete colà per comprarcene, onde possiam vivere e non abbiamo a morire”.
3 And the ten brethren of Joseph went down to buy corn out of Egypt.
E dieci de’ fratelli di Giuseppe scesero in Egitto per comprarvi del grano.
4 But [Jacob] sent not Benjamin, the brother of Joseph, with his brethren; for he said, Lest, haply, disease befall him.
Ma Giacobbe non mandò Beniamino, fratello di Giuseppe, coi suoi fratelli, perché diceva: “Che non gli abbia a succedere qualche disgrazia!”
5 And the sons of Israel came to buy with those that came, for the famine was in the land of Chanaan.
E i figliuoli d’Israele giunsero per comprare del grano in mezzo agli altri, che pur venivano; poiché nel paese di Canaan c’era la carestia.
6 And Joseph was ruler of the land; he sold to all the people of the land. And the brethren of Joseph, having come, did reverence to him, [bowing] with the face to the ground.
Or Giuseppe era colui che comandava nel paese; era lui che vendeva il grano a tutta la gente del paese; e i fratelli di Giuseppe vennero, e si prostrarono dinanzi a lui con la faccia a terra.
7 And when Joseph saw his brethren, he knew them, and estranged himself from them, and spoke hard words to them; and said to them, Whence are ye come? And they said, Out of the land of Chanaan, to buy food.
E Giuseppe vide i suoi fratelli e li riconobbe, ma fece lo straniero davanti a loro, e parlò loro aspramente e disse loro: “Donde venite?” Ed essi risposero: “Dal paese di Canaan per comprar de’ viveri”.
8 And Joseph knew his brethren, but they knew not him.
E Giuseppe riconobbe i suoi fratelli, ma essi non riconobbero lui.
9 And Joseph remembered his dream, which he saw; and he said to them, Ye are spies; to observe the marks of the land are ye come.
E Giuseppe si ricordò de’ sogni che aveva avuti intorno a loro, e disse: “Voi siete delle spie! Siete venuti per vedere i luoghi sforniti del paese!”
10 But they said, Nay, Sir, we thy servants are come to buy food;
Ed essi a lui: “No, signor mio; i tuoi servitori son venuti a comprar de’ viveri.
11 we are all sons of one man; we are peaceable, thy servants are not spies.
Siamo tutti figliuoli d’uno stesso uomo; siamo gente sincera; i tuoi servitori non son delle spie”.
12 And he said to them, Nay, but ye are come to observe the marks of the land.
Ed egli disse loro: “No, siete venuti per vedere i luoghi sforniti del paese!”
13 And they said, We thy servants are twelve brethren, in the land of Chanaan; and, behold, the youngest is with our father to-day, but the other one is not.
E quelli risposero: “Noi, tuoi servitori, siamo dodici fratelli, figliuoli d’uno stesso uomo, nel paese di Canaan. Ed ecco, il più giovane è oggi con nostro padre, e uno non è più”.
14 And Joseph said to them, This is it that I spoke to you, saying, ye are spies;
E Giuseppe disse loro: “La cosa è come v’ho detto; siete delle spie!
15 herein shall ye be manifested; by the health of Pharao, ye shall not depart hence, unless your younger brother come hither.
Ecco come sarete messi alla prova: Per la vita di Faraone, non uscirete di qui prima che il vostro fratello più giovine sia venuto qua.
16 Send one of you, and take your brother; and go ye to prison, till your words be clear, whether ye speak the truth or not; but, if not, by the health of Pharao, verily ye are spies.
Mandate uno di voi a prendere il vostro fratello; e voi resterete qui in carcere, perché le vostre parole siano messe alla prova, e si vegga se c’è del vero in voi; se no, per la vita di Faraone, siete delle spie!”
17 And he put them in prison three days.
E li mise assieme in prigione per tre giorni.
18 And he said to them on the third day, This do, and ye shall live, for I fear God.
Il terzo giorno, Giuseppe disse loro: “Fate questo, e vivrete; io temo Iddio!
19 If ye be peaceable, let one of your brethren be detained in prison; but go ye, and carry back the corn ye have purchased.
Se siete gente sincera, uno di voi fratelli resti qui incatenato nella vostra prigione; e voi, andate, portate del grano per la necessità delle vostre famiglie;
20 And bring your younger brother to me, and your words shall be believed; but, if not, ye shall die. And they did so.
e menatemi il vostro fratello più giovine; così le vostre parole saranno verificate, e voi non morrete”. Ed essi fecero così.
21 And each said to his brother, Yes, indeed, for we are in fault concerning our brother, when we disregarded the anguish of his soul, when he besought us, and we hearkened not to him; and therefore has this affliction come upon us.
E si dicevano l’uno all’altro: “Sì, noi fummo colpevoli verso il nostro fratello, giacché vedemmo l’angoscia dell’anima sua quando egli ci supplicava, e noi non gli demmo ascolto! Ecco perché ci viene addosso quest’angoscia”.
22 And Ruben answered them, saying, Did I not speak to you, saying, Hurt not the boy, and ye heard me not? and, behold, his blood is required.
E Ruben rispose loro, dicendo: “Non ve lo dicevo io: Non commettete questo peccato contro il fanciullo? Ma voi non mi voleste dare ascolto. Perciò ecco, che il suo sangue ci è ridomandato”.
23 But they knew not that Joseph understood them; for there was an interpreter between them.
Or quelli non sapevano che Giuseppe li capiva, perché fra lui e loro c’era un interprete.
24 And Joseph turned away from them, and wept; and again he came to them, and spoke to them; and he took Symeon from them, and bound him before their eyes.
Ed egli s’allontanò da essi, e pianse. Poi tornò, parlò loro, e prese di fra loro Simeone, che fece incatenare sotto i loro occhi.
25 And Joseph gave orders to fill their vessels with corn, and to return their money to each into his sack, and to give them provision for the way; and it was so done to them.
Poi Giuseppe ordinò che s’empissero di grano i loro sacchi, che si rimettesse il danaro di ciascuno nel suo sacco, e che si dessero loro delle provvisioni per il viaggio. E così fu fatto.
26 And having put the corn on the asses, they departed thence.
Ed essi caricarono il loro grano sui loro asini, e se ne andarono.
27 And one having opened his sack to give his asses fodder, at the place where they rested, saw also his bundle of money, for it was on the mouth of his sack.
Or l’un d’essi aprì il suo sacco per dare del foraggio al suo asino, nel luogo ove pernottavano, e vide il suo danaro ch’era alla bocca del sacco;
28 And he said to his brethren, My money has been restored to me, and behold this is in my sack. And their heart was wonder-struck, and they were troubled, saying one to another, What is this that God has done to us?
e disse ai suoi fratelli: “Il mio danaro m’è stato restituito, ed eccolo qui nel mio sacco”. Allora il cuore venne lor meno, e, tremando, dicevano l’uno all’altro: “Che è mai questo che Dio ci ha fatto?”
29 And they came to their father, Jacob, into the land of Chanaan, and reported to him all that had happened to them, saying,
E vennero a Giacobbe, loro padre, nel paese di Canaan, e gli raccontarono tutto quello ch’era loro accaduto, dicendo:
30 The man, the lord of the land, spoke harsh words to us, and put us in prison as spies of the land.
“L’uomo ch’è il signor del paese, ci ha parlato aspramente e ci ha trattato da spie del paese.
31 And we said to him, We are men of peace, we are not spies.
E noi gli abbiamo detto: Siamo gente sincera; non siamo delle spie;
32 We are twelve brethren, sons of our father; one is not, and the youngest is with his father to-day in the land of Chanaan.
siamo dodici fratelli, figliuoli di nostro padre; uno non è più, e il più giovine è oggi con nostro padre nel paese di Canaan.
33 And the man, the lord of the land, said to us, Herein shall I know that ye are peaceable; leave one brother here with me, and having taken the corn ye have purchased for your family, depart.
E quell’uomo, signore del paese, ci ha detto: Da questo conoscerò se siete gente sincera; lasciate presso di me uno dei vostri fratelli, prendete quel che vi necessita per le vostre famiglie, partite, e menatemi il vostro fratello più giovine.
34 And bring to me your younger brother; then I shall know that ye are not spies, but that ye are men of peace: and I will restore you your brother, and ye shall trade in the land.
Allora conoscerò che non siete delle spie ma gente sincera; io vi renderò il vostro fratello, e voi potrete trafficare nel paese”.
35 And it came to pass as they were emptying their sacks, there was each man's bundle of money in his sack; and they and their father saw their bundles of money, and they were afraid.
Or com’essi vuotavano i loro sacchi, ecco che l’involto del danaro di ciascuno era nel suo sacco; essi e il padre loro videro gl’involti del loro danaro, e furon presi da paura.
36 And their father Jacob said to them, Ye have bereaved me. Joseph is not, Symeon is not, and will ye take Benjamin? all these things have come upon me.
E Giacobbe, loro padre, disse: “Voi m’avete privato dei miei figliuoli! Giuseppe non è più, Simeone non è più, e mi volete togliere anche Beniamino! Tutto questo cade addosso a me!”
37 And Ruben spoke to his father, saying, Slay my two sons, if I bring him not to thee; give him into my hand, and I will bring him back to thee.
E Ruben disse a suo padre: “Se non te lo rimeno, fa’ morire i miei due figliuoli! Affidalo a me, io te lo ricondurrò”.
38 But he said, My son shall not go down with you, because his brother is dead, and he only has been left; and [suppose] it shall come to pass that he is afflicted by the way by which ye go, then ye shall bring down my old age with sorrow to Hades. (Sheol h7585)
Ma Giacobbe rispose: “Il mio figliuolo non scenderà con voi; poiché il suo fratello è morto, e questo solo è rimasto: se gli succedesse qualche disgrazia durante il vostro viaggio, fareste scendere con cordoglio la mia canizie nel soggiorno de’ morti”. (Sheol h7585)
