Ezra 4
1 Now news came to the haters of Judah and Benjamin that the people who had come back were building a Temple to the Lord, the God of Israel;

2 Then they came to Zerubbabel and to the heads of families, and said to them, Let us take part in the building with you; for we are servants of your God, even as you are; and we have been making offerings to him from the days of Esar-haddon, king of Assyria, who put us here.
gingo de till Serubbabel och till huvudmännen för familjerna och sade till dem: "Vi vilja bygga tillsammans med eder, ty vi söka eder Gud, likasom I, och åt honom offra vi alltsedan den tid då den assyriske konungen Esarhaddon lät föra oss hit."
3 But Zerubbabel and Jeshua and the rest of the heads of families in Israel said to them, You have no part with us in the building of a house for our God; we ourselves will do the work together for the Lord, the God of Israel, as Cyrus, king of Persia, has given us orders.
Men Serubbabel och Jesua och de övriga huvudmännen för Israels familjer sade till dem: "Det är icke tillbörligt att I tillsammans med oss byggen ett hus åt vår Gud, utan vi vilja för oss själva med varandra bygga huset åt HERREN, Israels Gud, såsom konung Kores, konungen i Persien, har bjudit oss."
4 Then the people of the land made the hands of the people of Judah feeble, troubling them with fear in their building;
Men folket i landet bedrev det så, att judafolkets mod föll och de avskräcktes från att bygga vidare.
5 And they gave payment to men who made designs against them and kept them from effecting their purpose, all through the time of Cyrus, king of Persia, till Darius became king.
Och de lejde mot dem män som genom sina råd gjorde deras rådslag om intet, så länge Kores, konungen i Persien, levde, och sedan ända till dess att Darejaves, konungen i Persien, kom till regeringen.
6 And in the time of Ahasuerus, when he first became king, they put on record a statement against the people of Judah and Jerusalem.
(Sedermera, under Ahasveros' regering, redan i begynnelsen av hans regering, skrev man en anklagelseskrift mot dem som bodde i Juda och Jerusalem.
7 And in the time of Artaxerxes, Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of his friends, sent a letter to Artaxerxes, king of Persia, writing it in the Aramaean writing and language.
Och i Artasastas tid skrevo Bislam, Mitredat och Tabeel samt dennes övriga medbröder till Artasasta, konungen i Persien. Och det som stod i skrivelsen var skrivet med arameiska bokstäver och avfattat på arameiska.
8 Rehum, the chief ruler, and Shimshai the scribe, sent a letter against Jerusalem, to Artaxerxes the king;
Likaledes skrevo rådsherren Rehum och sekreteraren Simsai ett brev om Jerusalem till konung Artasasta av följande innehåll.
9 The letter was sent by Rehum, the chief ruler, and Shimshai the scribe and their friends; the Dinaites and the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Shushanchites, the Dehaites, the Elamites,
De skrevo då, rådsherren Rehum och sekreteraren Simsai och de andra, deras medbröder: diniterna och afaresatkiterna, tarpeliterna, afaresiterna, arkeviterna, babylonierna, susaniterna, dehaviterna, elamiterna
10 And the rest of the nations which the great and noble Osnappar took over and put in Samaria and the rest of the country over the river:
och de andra folk som den store och mäktige Asenappar hade fört bort och låtit bosätta sig i staden Samaria och annorstädes i landet på andra sidan floden o. s. v.
11 This is a copy of the letter which they sent to Artaxerxes the king: Your servants living across the river send these words:
Och detta är vad som stod skrivet i det brev som de sände till konung Artasasta: "Dina tjänare, männen på andra sidan floden o. s. v.
12 We give news to the king that the Jews who came from you have come to us at Jerusalem; they are building up again that uncontrolled and evil town; the walls are complete and they are joining up the bases.
Det vare veterligt för konungen att de judar som drogo upp från dig hava kommit hit till oss i Jerusalem, och de hålla nu på att bygga upp den upproriska och onda staden, att sätta murarna i stånd och att förbättra grundvalarna.
13 The king may be certain that when the building of this town and its walls is complete, they will give no tax or payment in goods or forced payments, and in the end it will be a cause of loss to the kings.
Så må nu konungen veta, att om denna stad bliver uppbyggd och murarna bliva satta i stånd, skola de varken giva skatt eller tull eller vägpenningar, och sådant skall bliva till men för konungarnas inkomster.
14 Now because we are responsible to the king, and it is not right for us to see the king's honour damaged, we have sent to give the king word of these things,
Alldenstund vi nu äta palatsets salt, och det icke är tillbörligt att vi åse huru skada tillskyndas konungen, därför sända vi nu och låta konungen veta detta,
15 So that search may be made in the book of the records of your fathers: and you will see in the book of the records that this town has been uncontrolled, and a cause of trouble to kings and countries, and that there were outbursts against authority there in the past: for which reason the town was made waste.
för att man må göra efterforskningar i dina fäders krönikor; ty av dessa krönikor skall du finna och erfara att denna stad har varit en upprorisk stad, till förfång för konungar och länder, och att man i den har anstiftat oroligheter ända ifrån äldsta tider, varför ock denna stad har blivit förstörd.
16 We give you word, that if the building of this town and its walls is made complete, there will be an end of your power in the country across the river.
Så låta vi nu konungen veta, att om denna stad bliver uppbyggd och dess murar bliva satta i stånd, så skall du i följd härav icke mer hava någon del i landet på andra sidan floden."
17 Then the king sent an answer to Rehum, the chief ruler, and Shimshai the scribe, and their friends living in Samaria, and to the rest of those across the river, saying, Peace to you:
Då sände konungen följande svar till rådsherren Rehum och sekreteraren Simsai och de andra, deras medbröder, som bodde i Samaria och i det övriga landet på andra sidan floden: "Frid o. s. v.
18 And now the sense of the letter which you sent to us has been made clear to me,
Den skrivelse som I haven sänt till oss har noggrant blivit uppläst för mig.
19 And I gave orders for a search to be made, and it is certain that in the past this town has made trouble for kings, and that outbursts against authority have taken place there.
Och sedan jag hade givit befallning att man skulle göra efterforskningar, fann man att denna stad ända ifrån äldsta tider har plägat sätta sig upp mot konungar, och att uppror och oroligheter där hava anstiftats.
20 Further, there have been great kings in Jerusalem, ruling over all the country across the river, to whom they gave taxes and payments in goods and forced payments.
I Jerusalem hava ock funnits mäktiga konungar, som hava varit herrar över allt land som ligger på andra sidan floden, och skatt, tull och vägpenningar hava blivit dem givna.
21 Give an order now, that these men are to do nothing more, and that the building of the town is to be stopped, till I give an order.
Så utfärden nu en befallning att man förhindrar dessa män att bygga upp denna stad, till dess jag giver befallning därom.
22 Be certain to do this with all care: do not let trouble be increased to the king's damage.
Och sen till, att I icke handlen försumligt i denna sak, så att skadan icke växer, konungarna till förfång."
23 Then, after reading the king's letter, Rehum and Shimshai the scribe and their friends went quickly to Jerusalem, to the Jews, and had them stopped by force.
Så snart nu vad som stod i konung Artasastas skrivelse hade blivit läst för Rehum och sekreteraren Simsai och deras medbröder, gingo de med hast till judarna i Jerusalem och hindrade dem med våld och makt.)
24 So the work of the house of God at Jerusalem came to an end; so it was stopped, till the second year of the rule of Darius, king of Persia.
Så förhindrades nu arbetet på Guds hus i Jerusalem. Och det blev förhindrat ända till den persiske konungen Darejaves' andra regeringsår.
