Ezekiel 33
1 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying,
Et la parole de l'Éternel me fut adressée en ces mots:
2 Son of man, give a word to the children of your people, and say to them, When I make the sword come on a land, if the people of the land take a man from among their number and make him their watchman:
Fils de l'homme, parle aux enfants de ton peuple et dis-leur: Si je faisais venir l'épée sur un pays, et que le peuple du pays prît dans son sein un homme dont ils fissent leur sentinelle,
3 If, when he sees the sword coming on the land, by sounding the horn he gives the people news of their danger;
et qui, voyant venir l'épée sur le pays, sonnât de la trompette, pour avertir le peuple;
4 Then anyone who, hearing the sound of the horn, does not take note of it, will himself be responsible for his death, if the sword comes and takes him away.
si quelqu'un, entendant le son de la trompette, ne recevait pas l'avertissement, et que l'épée vînt et le surprît, son sang pèserait sur sa tête:
5 On hearing the sound of the horn, he did not take note; his blood will be on him; for if he had taken note his life would have been safe.
il a ouï le son de la trompette, et n'a pas reçu l'avertissement, son sang pèse sur sa tête. Mais s'il reçoit l'avertissement, il sauvera son âme.
6 But if the watchman sees the sword coming, and does not give a note on the horn, and the people have no word of the danger, and the sword comes and takes any person from among them; he will be taken away in his sin, but I will make the watchman responsible for his blood.
Que si la sentinelle voyant venir l'épée, ne sonne pas de la trompette, et que, sans que le peuple soit averti, l'épée arrive et ôte la vie à un seul homme, cet homme périra par suite de son crime, mais je redemanderai son sang à la sentinelle.
7 So you, son of man, I have made you a watchman for the children of Israel; and you are to give ear to the word of my mouth and give them news from me of their danger.
Or, fils de l'homme, je t'ai établi sentinelle pour la maison d'Israël, afin que de ma bouche tu entendes la parole, et que tu les avertisses de ma part.
8 When I say to the evil-doer, Death will certainly overtake you; and you say nothing to make clear to the evil-doer the danger of his way; death will overtake that evil man in his evil-doing, but I will make you responsible for his blood.
Si je dis à l'impie: Impie, tu mourras! et que tu ne parles pas pour détourner par tes avis l'impie de sa voie, cet impie mourra par suite de son crime, mais je te redemanderai son sang.
9 But if you make clear to the evil-doer the danger of his way for the purpose of turning him from it, and he is not turned from his way, death will overtake him in his evil-doing, but your life will be safe.
Mais si par tes avis tu as cherché à détourner l'impie de sa voie, pour qu'il la quitte, s'il ne la quitte pas, il mourra par suite de son crime; mais toi, tu auras sauvé ton âme.
10 And you, son of man, say to the children of Israel, You say, Our wrongdoing and our sins are on us and we are wasting away in them; how then may we have life?
Donc, fils de l'homme, dis à la maison d'Israël: Vous dites: « Nous sommes sous le poids de nos péchés et de nos crimes, et c'est par eux que nous périssons; comment donc pourrions-nous vivre? »
11 Say to them, By my life, says the Lord, I have no pleasure in the death of the evil-doer; it is more pleasing to me if he is turned from his way and has life: be turned, be turned from your evil ways; why are you looking for death, O children of Israel?
Dis-leur: Par ma vie, dit le Seigneur, l'Éternel, je ne prends point plaisir à la mort de l'impie, mais à ce que l'impie renonce à sa voie, et qu'il vive. Quittez, quittez vos mauvaises voies! Pourquoi voudriez-vous la mort, maison d'Israël?
12 And you, son of man, say to the children of your people, The righteousness of the upright man will not make him safe in the day when he does wrong; and the evil-doing of the evil man will not be the cause of his fall in the day when he is turned from his evil-doing; and the upright man will not have life because of his righteousness in the day when he does evil.
Et toi, fils de l'homme, dis aux enfants de ton peuple: La justice du juste ne le sauvera pas au jour qu'il péchera; et l'impiété de l'impie ne sera pas pour lui une cause de ruine, au jour qu'il abandonnera son impiété, de même que le juste n'aura pas dans sa justice une cause de vie, le jour qu'il deviendra pécheur.
13 When I say to the upright that life will certainly be his; if he puts his faith in his righteousness and does evil, not one of his upright acts will be kept in memory; but in the evil he has done, death will overtake him.
Si je dis du juste: Qu'il ait la vie! et que, se confiant en sa justice, il fasse le mal, il ne lui sera point tenu compte de toute sa justice, et il mourra par suite du mal qu'il a fait.
14 And when I say to the evil-doer, Death will certainly be your fate; if he is turned from his sin and does what is ordered and right;
Mais si je dis de l'impie: Qu'il meure! et que, renonçant à ses péchés, il agisse selon le droit et la justice,
15 If the evil-doer lets one who is in his debt have back what is his, and gives back what he had taken by force, and is guided by the rules of life, doing no evil; life will certainly be his, death will not overtake him.
rendant le gage, restituant ce qu'il a pris, se conduisant selon les commandements qui donnent la vie, sans faire rien qui soit mal; il vivra, ne mourra point.
16 Not one of the sins which he has done will be kept in mind against him: he has done what is ordered and right, life will certainly be his.
De tous les péchés qu'il aura commis, il ne sera point tenu compte contre lui: il a fait ce qui est droit et juste; il vivra.
17 But the children of your people say, The way of the Lord is not equal: when it is they whose way is not equal.
Cependant les enfants de ton peuple disent: « La voie du Seigneur n'est pas droite; » mais c'est votre voie qui n'est pas droite.
18 When the upright man, turning away from his righteousness, does evil, death will overtake him in it.
Quand le juste renonce à sa justice et fait le mal, il en meurt.
19 And when the evil man, turning away from his evil-doing, does what is ordered and right, he will get life by it.
Et quand l'impie renonce à son impiété et fait ce qui est droit et juste, par là il obtient la vie.
20 And still you say, The way of the Lord is not equal. O children of Israel, I will be your judge, giving to everyone the reward of his ways.
Et vous dites: « La voie du Seigneur n'est pas droite! » Je vous jugerai chacun de vous selon la voie que vous suivez, maison d'Israël.
21 Now in the twelfth year after we had been taken away prisoners, in the tenth month, on the fifth day of the month, one who had got away in flight from Jerusalem came to me, saying, The town has been taken.
Et la douzième année, le dixième mois, le cinquième jour du mois, depuis notre déportation, un homme qui s'était échappé de Jérusalem, arriva auprès de moi et dit: La ville est prise!
22 Now the hand of the Lord had been on me in the evening, before the man who had got away came to me; and he made my mouth open, ready for his coming to me in the morning; and my mouth was open and I was no longer without voice.
Or la main de l'Éternel s'était fait sentir à moi la veille de l'arrivée de ce fugitif, et m'avait ouvert la bouche quand il arriva auprès de moi le matin; et ainsi, ma bouche s'ouvrit, et je ne fus plus muet.
23 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying,
Et la parole de l'Éternel me fut adressée en ces mots:
24 Son of man, those who are living in these waste places in the land of Israel say, Abraham was but one, and he had land for his heritage: but we are a great number; the land is given to us for our heritage.
Fils de l'homme, les habitants de ces ruines dans le pays d'Israël disent: « Abraham était un seul homme, et il a obtenu la propriété du pays; or nous sommes nombreux; la propriété du pays nous est dévolue. »
25 For this cause say to them, This is what the Lord has said: You take your meat with the blood, your eyes are lifted up to your images, and you are takers of life: are you to have the land for your heritage?
C'est pourquoi, dis-leur: Ainsi parle le Seigneur, l'Éternel: Vous mettez du sang dans ce que vous mangez, et vous levez les yeux vers vos idoles, et vous répandez le sang; et vous posséderiez le pays!
26 You put your faith in your swords, you do disgusting things, everyone takes his neighbour's wife: are you to have the land for your heritage?
Vous vous appuyez sur votre épée; vous, femmes, vous commettez des abominations; vous déshonorez la femme l'un de l'autre; et vous posséderiez le pays!
27 This is what you are to say to them: The Lord has said, By my life, truly, those who are in the waste places will be put to the sword, and him who is in the open field I will give to the beasts for their food, and those who are in the strong places and in holes in the rocks will come to their death by disease.
Parle-leur ainsi: Ainsi parle le Seigneur, l'Éternel: Oui, par ma vie, ceux qui sont dans les ruines périront par l'épée, et ceux qui sont dans les champs, je les livrerai en proie aux bêtes féroces, et ceux qui sont dans les forts et dans les cavernes, mourront de la peste.
28 And I will make the land a waste and a cause of wonder, and the pride of her strength will come to an end; and the mountains of Israel will be made waste so that no one will go through.
Et du pays je ferai un désert et une solitude, et leur insolent orgueil prendra fin, et les montagnes d'Israël deviendront un désert que personne ne traverse.
29 Then they will be certain that I am the Lord, when I have made the land a waste and a cause of wonder, because of all the disgusting things which they have done,
Alors ils sauront que je suis l'Éternel, quand je ferai du pays un désert et une solitude à cause de toutes les abominations qu'ils ont commises.
30 And as for you, son of man, the children of your people are talking together about you by the walls and in the doorways of the houses, saying to one another, Come now, give ear to the word which comes from the Lord.
Quant à toi, fils de l'homme, les enfants de ton peuple s'entretiennent de toi entre les murs et dans les portes de leurs maisons, et ils se parlent l'un à l'autre, chacun à son frère, et disent: « Venez donc, et écoutez quelle parole émane de l'Éternel! »
31 And they come to you as my people come, and are seated before you as my people, hearing your words but doing them not: for deceit is in their mouth and their heart goes after profit for themselves.
Et ils viennent à toi, comme un concours de peuple, et s'assoient devant toi, comme étant mon peuple, et ils écoutent tes paroles, mais ils ne les mettent point en pratique: mais ils font ce qui leur plaît, et leur cœur s'attache à leur cupidité.
32 And truly you are to them like a love song by one who has a very pleasing voice and is an expert player on an instrument: for they give ear to your words but do them not.
Et voici, tu es pour eux comme un chant agréable par la beauté de la voix et l'harmonie de la musique; ils écoutent tes paroles, mais ne les mettent point en pratique.
33 And when this comes about (see, it is coming), then it will be clear to them that a prophet has been among them.
Mais quand viendront [les maux], et voici, ils arrivent! ils comprendront qu'il y avait un prophète au milieu d'eux.
