< Luke 22 >

1 Now the feast of unleavened bread, which is called the passover, was at hand.
Now the feast of unleavened bread drew nigh, which is called the Passover.
2 And the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might kill him; for they feared the people.
And the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might put him to death; for they feared the people.
3 But Satan entered into Judas surnamed Iscariot, who was of the number of the twelve.
And Satan entered into Judas who was called Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve.
4 And he went away, and conferred with the chief priests and the captains how he might deliver him up to them.
And he went away, and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he might deliver him unto them.
5 And they were glad, and agreed to give him money.
And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money.
6 And he consented, and sought an opportunity to deliver him up to them without tumult.
And he consented, and sought opportunity to deliver him unto them in the absence of the multitude.
7 Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the passover must be killed.
And the day of unleavened bread came, on which the passover must be sacrificed.
8 And he sent Peter and John, saying: Go, make ready the passover for us, that we may eat it.
And he sent Peter and John, saying, Go and make ready for us the passover, that we may eat.
9 They said to him: Where dost thou wish that we make it ready?
And they said unto him, Where wilt thou that we make ready?
10 And he said to them: Behold, as you go into the city, there shall meet you a man carrying a pitcher of water; follow him into the house that he enters;
And he said unto them, Behold, when ye are entered into the city, there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house whereinto he goeth.
11 and say to the master of the house: The Teacher says to you, Where is the room in which I may eat the passover with my disciples?
And ye shall say unto the goodman of the house, The Master saith unto thee, Where is the guest-chamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples?
12 And he will show you a large upper room furnished; there make ready.
And he will shew you a large upper room furnished: there make ready.
13 And they went, and found as he had said to them; and they made ready the passover.
And they went, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover.
14 And when the hour had come, he reclined at table, and the twelve apostles with him.
And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the apostles with him.
15 And he said to them: I have greatly desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer.
And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer:
16 For I say to you, I will eat of it no more till it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.
for I say unto you, I will not eat it, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God.
17 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said: Take this, and divide it among yourselves;
And he received a cup, and when he had given thanks, he said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves:
18 for I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine till the kingdom of God has come.
for I say unto you, I will not drink from henceforth of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come.
19 And he took bread, and gave thanks; and he broke, and gave it to them, saying: This is my body, which is given for you: do this in remembrance of me.
And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and gave to them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.
20 In like manner also, the cup, after he had supped, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is shed for you.
And the cup in like manner after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood, [even] that which is poured out for you.
21 But, behold, the hand of him that delivers me up is with me on the table.
But behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table.
22 And the Son of man goes, as it is determined; but alas for that man by whom he is delivered up.
For the Son of man indeed goeth, as it hath been determined: but woe unto that man through whom he is betrayed!
23 And they began to inquire among themselves, which of them it could be that was about to do this thing.
And they began to question among themselves, which of them it was that should do this thing.
24 And there had been also a contention among them, which of them was thought to be the greatest.
And there arose also a contention among them, which of them is accounted to be greatest.
25 And he said to them: The kings of the nations have dominion over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called benefactors.
And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles have lordship over them; and they that have authority over them are called Benefactors.
26 But you shall not be so; but let the greatest among you be as the younger, and him that is chief, as he that serves.
But ye [shall] not [be] so: but he that is the greater among you, let him become as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve.
27 For which is greater, he that reclines at table, or he that serves? Is not he that reclines at table? But I am among you as one that serves.
For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am in the midst of you as he that serveth.
28 You are they that have continued with me in my trials;
But ye are they which have continued with me in my temptations;
29 and I appoint to you a kingdom, as my Father has appointed to me,
and I appoint unto you a kingdom, even as my Father appointed unto me,
30 that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
that ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom; and ye shall sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
31 And the Lord said: Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded you apostles for himself, that he may sift you as wheat.
Simon, Simon, behold, Satan asked to have you, that he might sift you as wheat:
32 But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith fail not. And when you have turned to me again, strengthen your brethren.
but I made supplication for thee, that thy faith fail not: and do thou, when once thou hast turned again, stablish thy brethren.
33 And he said to him: Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both to prison and to death.
And he said unto him, Lord, with thee I am ready to go both to prison and to death.
34 He replied: I tell you, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day before you have three times denied that you know me.
And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, until thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me.
35 And he said to them: When I sent you without purse and bag and sandals, did you need any thing? They replied: Nothing.
And he said unto them, When I sent you forth without purse, and wallet, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing.
36 Then he said to them: But now, he that has a purse, let him take it, and likewise a bag; and he that has no sword, let him sell his mantle and buy one.
And he said unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise a wallet: and he that hath none, let him sell his cloke, and buy a sword.
37 For I say to you, That even this which is written must be fulfilled in me: And he was numbered with transgressors. For the things concerning me have an end.
For I say unto you, that this which is written must be fulfilled in me, And he was reckoned with transgressors: for that which concerneth me hath fulfillment.
38 And they said: Lord, behold, here are two swords. He said to them: It is enough.
And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough.
39 And after he had gone out, he went, according to custom, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples followed him.
And he came out, and went, as his custom was, unto the mount of Olives; and the disciples also followed him.
40 And when he came to the place, he said to them: Pray, that you enter not into temptation.
And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation.
41 And he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and kneeled down, and prayed,
And he was parted from them about a stone’s cast; and he kneeled down and prayed,
42 saying: Father, if thou art willing that this cup should pass from me―yet, not my will, but thine be done.
saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.
43 And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, to strengthen him.
And there appeared unto him an angel from heaven, strengthening him.
44 And he was in agony, and prayed more earnestly. And his sweat was like great drops of blood falling to the ground.
And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat became as it were great drops of blood falling down upon the ground.
45 And he arose from prayer, and came to his disciples, and found them asleep for sorrow.
And when he rose up from his prayer, he came unto the disciples, and found them sleeping for sorrow,
46 And he said to them: Why do you sleep? Arise and pray, lest you enter into temptation.
and said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, that ye enter not into temptation.
47 And while he was yet speaking, behold a multitude; and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and came near to Jesus to kiss him.
While he yet spake, behold, a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them; and he drew near unto Jesus to kiss him.
48 But Jesus said to him: Judas, do you deliver up the Son of man with a kiss?
But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?
49 When those who were about him saw what would be done, they said to him: Lord, shall we strike with the sword?
And when they that were about him saw what would follow, they said, Lord, shall we smite with the sword?
50 And a certain one of them struck the servant of the chief priest, and cut off his right ear.
And a certain one of them smote the servant of the high priest, and struck off his right ear.
51 And Jesus answered and said: Let this matter proceed thus far. And he touched his ear and healed him.
But Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye thus far. And he touched his ear, and healed him.
52 And Jesus said to the chief priests, and the captains of the temple, and the elders that had come against him: Have you come out with swords and clubs, as against a robber?
And Jesus said unto the chief priests, and captains of the temple, and elders, which were come against him, Are ye come out, as against a robber, with swords and staves?
53 While I was daily with you in the temple, you did not lay hands on me. But this is your hour, and the authority of darkness.
When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched not forth your hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness.
54 And they took him, and led him away, and brought him into the house of the chief priest. But Peter followed at a distance.
And they seized him, and led him [away], and brought him into the high priest’s house. But Peter followed afar off.
55 And when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the court, and had sat down together, Peter sat down in the midst of them.
And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the court, and had sat down together, Peter sat in the midst of them.
56 And a certain maid-servant saw him sitting by the fire; and, looking intently at him, she said: This man also was with him.
And a certain maid seeing him as he sat in the light [of the fire], and looking stedfastly upon him, said, This man also was with him.
57 But he denied, saying: Woman, I know him not.
But he denied, saying, Woman, I know him not.
58 And after a little, another saw him, and said: You also are one of them. Peter replied: Man, I am not.
And after a little while another saw him, and said, Thou also art [one] of them. But Peter said, Man, I am not.
59 And about one hour after, another confidently affirmed, saying: Of a truth, this man also was with him; for he is a Galilean.
And after the space of about one hour another confidently affirmed, saying, Of a truth this man also was with him: for he is a Galilaean.
60 But Peter said: Man, I know not what you say. And immediately, while he was speaking, the cock crew.
But Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest. And immediately, while he yet spake, the cock crew.
61 And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, that he had said to him, Before the cock crows, you will deny me three times.
And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how that he said unto him, Before the cock crow this day, thou shalt deny me thrice.
62 And Peter went out and wept bitterly.
And he went out, and wept bitterly.
63 And the men that had Jesus in custody mocked him, and smote him.
And the men that held [Jesus] mocked him, and beat him.
64 And when they had blindfolded him, they struck him on the face, and asked him, saying: Give a response; who is it that struck you?
And they blindfolded him, and asked him, saying, Prophesy: who is he that struck thee?
65 And many other impious things they said to him.
And many other things spake they against him, reviling him.
66 And when it was day, the elders of the people, the chief priests also and scribes, met together, and led him up to the Sanhedrin, and said:
And as soon as it was day, the assembly of the elders of the people was gathered together, both chief priests and scribes; and they led him away into their council, saying,
67 If you are the Christ, tell us. But he said to them: If I tell you, you will not believe;
If thou art the Christ, tell us. But he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe:
68 and if I also ask you a question, you will not answer me, nor let me go.
and if I ask [you], ye will not answer.
69 Henceforth the Son of man shall sit on the right hand of the power of God.
But from henceforth shall the Son of man be seated at the right hand of the power of God.
70 And they all said: You are, then, the Son of God? He said to them: You say that I am.
And they all said, Art thou then the Son of God? And he said unto them, Ye say that I am.
71 They replied: What further need have we of testimony? For we ourselves have heard from his own mouth.
And they said, What further need have we of witness? for we ourselves have heard from his own mouth.
