< John 4 >

1 When therefore the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John
UJesu wezwa ukuthi abaFarisi basebekuzwile ukuthi usebhaphathize abantu wabuye waba labafundi abanengi kuloJohane,
2 (although Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples),
loba nje iqiniso kuyikuthi kwakungasuye uJesu owayebhaphathiza, kodwa kubhaphathiza abafundi bakhe.
3 he left Judæa, and departed again into Galilee.
Kwathi esekuzwile lokho, wasuka eJudiya wabuyela futhi eGalile.
4 And he must needs pass through Samaria.
Manje kwakumele adabule eSamariya.
5 So he cometh to a city of Samaria, called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph:
Ngakho wafika emzini waseSamariya owawuthiwa yiSikhari, eduzane lesiqinti uJakhobe ayesinike indodana yakhe uJosefa.
6 and Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour.
Umthombo kaJakhobe wawukhonapho, uJesu wathi esediniwe ngohambo, wahlala phansi malungana lomthombo. Kwakusemini enkulu.
7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.
Kwathi umfazi waseSamariya efika ukuzakukha amanzi uJesu wathi kuye, “Ake unginathise.”
8 For his disciples were gone away into the city to buy food.
(Abafundi bakhe babeye emzini ukuyathenga ukudla.)
9 The Samaritan woman therefore saith unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, who am a Samaritan woman? (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)
Umfazi waseSamariya wathi kuye, “UngumJuda, mina ngingumfazi waseSamariya. Pho ungacela kanjani ukuthi unathiswe yimi?” (Phela amaJuda kawadlelani lamaSamariya.)
10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.
UJesu wamphendula wathi, “Aluba ubusazi isipho sikaNkulunkulu lokuthi ungubani lowo ocela ukuthi umnathise, ngabe umcelile wakupha amanzi okuphila.”
11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: whence then hast thou that living water?
Umfazi wathi, “Nkosi, wena kawulakho okokukhisa amanzi, futhi umthombo uyatshona. Ungawathatha ngaphi lawomanzi okuphila na?
12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his sons, and his cattle?
Wena umkhulu na kulobaba uJakhobe owasipha umthombo lo laye wanatha kuwo kanye lamadodana akhe lezimvu zakhe kanye lezifuyo zakhe?”
13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Every one that drinketh of this water shall thirst again:
UJesu waphendula wathi, “Wonke umuntu onatha amanzi la uzaphinda ome futhi,
14 but whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall become in him a well of water springing up unto eternal life. (aiōn g165, aiōnios g166)
kodwa lowo onatha amanzi engimnika wona, kasoze abuye ome lanini. Ngempela amanzi engimnika wona azakuba ngumfula ogelezela ekuphileni okungapheliyo.” (aiōn g165, aiōnios g166)
15 The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come all the way hither to draw.
Umfazi wathi kuye, “Nkosi, ngipha lawomanzi ukuze ngingaphindi ngome, ngingabi ngilokhu ngisiza lapha ngizokukha amanzi.”
16 Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither.
Wathi kowesifazane, “Hamba uyebiza umkakho uze laye lapha.”
17 The woman answered and said unto him, I have no husband. Jesus saith unto her, Thou saidst well, I have no husband:
Waphendula wathi, “Kangilandoda.” UJesu wathi kuye, “Uqondile nxa usithi kawulandoda.
18 for thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: this hast thou said truly.
Iqiniso yikuthi usube lamadoda amahlanu, futhi indoda le olayo khathesi kayisiyakho. Lokho okutshiloyo kuliqiniso.”
19 The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.
Owesifazane wathi, “Nkosi, sengibona ukuthi ungumphrofethi.
20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.
Okhokho bethu babekhonza phezu kwentaba le, kodwa lina maJuda lithi indawo okumele sikhonzele kuyo iseJerusalema.”
21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when neither in this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, shall ye worship the Father.
UJesu wathi, “nkosazana, ngikholwa, siyeza isikhathi lapho elingezukumkhonza uBaba entabeni kumbe eJerusalema.
22 Ye worship that which ye know not: we worship that which we know; for salvation is from the Jews.
Lina maSamariya likhonza elingakwaziyo; thina sikhonza lokho esikwaziyo, ngoba insindiso ivela kumaJuda.
23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and truth: for such doth the Father seek to be his worshippers.
Kodwa siyeza isikhathi, yebo manje sesifikile lapho abakhonzi beqiniso bezamkhonza uBaba ngomoya langeqiniso, ngoba yibo abakhonzi abanjalo uBaba abadingayo.
24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship in spirit and truth.
UNkulunkulu ungumoya, labo abamkhonzayo kumele bamkhonze ngomoya langeqiniso.”
25 The woman saith unto him, I know that Messiah cometh (he that is called Christ): when he is come, he will declare unto us all things.
Owesifazane wathi, “Ngiyakwazi ukuthi uMesiya (othiwa nguKhristu) uyeza. Esefikile uzasichazela konke.”
26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am [he].
UJesu wasesithi, “Mina engikhuluma lawe nginguye.”
27 And upon this came his disciples; and they marvelled that he was speaking with a woman; yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why speakest thou with her?
Ngalesosikhathi abafundi bakhe baphenduka, bamangala ukufumana uJesu ekhuluma lowesifazane. Kodwa kakho owabuzayo wathi, “Ufunani na?” kumbe athi, “Kungani ukhuluma lowesifazane na?”
28 So the woman left her waterpot, and went away into the city, and saith to the people,
Owesifazane watshiya inkonxa yakhe wabuyela emzini wakibo wathi ebantwini,
29 Come, see a man, who told me all things that [ever] I did: can this be the Christ?
“Wozani lizobona indoda engitshele konke esengake ngakwenza. Kambe angaba nguye yini uKhristu?”
30 They went out of the city, and were coming to him.
Baphuma emzini lowo baqonda kuye.
31 In the mean while the disciples prayed him, saying, Rabbi, eat.
Kusenzakala konke lokhu abafundi bakhe bamncenga bathi, “Rabi, ake udle ulutho.”
32 But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not.
Kodwa wathi kubo, “Ngilokudla engikudlayo elingakwaziyo lina.”
33 The disciples therefore said one to another, Hath any man brought him [aught] to eat?
Abafundi babuzana bathi, “Kambe ngabe ukhona omlethele ukudla na?”
34 Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to accomplish his work.
UJesu wathi, “Okwami ukudla yikwenza intando yalowo ongithumileyo lokuphelelisa umsebenzi wakhe.
35 Say not ye, There are yet four months, and [then] cometh the harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields, that they are white already unto harvest.
Kanti angithi lithi, ‘Kusele izinyanga ezine ukuthi kufike isikhathi sokuvuna’? Ngithi vulani amehlo enu likhangele amasimu! Amabele aselungele ukuvunwa.
36 He that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal; that he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together. (aiōnios g166)
Khathesi lokhu, umvuni uvele usehle ezuza iholo lakhe, usebuthela amabele ekuphileni kwaphakade, ukuze umhlanyeli lomvuni bajabule ndawonye. (aiōnios g166)
37 For herein is the saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth.
Ngakho ilizwi elithi, ‘Omunye uyahlanyela, omunye avune’ liliqiniso.
38 I sent you to reap that whereon ye have not labored: others have labored, and ye are entered into their labor.
Ngalithuma ukuyavuna lokho elingakusebenzelanga. Abanye bawenzile umsebenzi onzima, lina selivune umvuzo womsebenzi wabo.”
39 And from that city many of the Samaritans believed on him because of the word of the woman, who testified, He told me all things that [ever] I did.
AmaSamariya amanengi akulowomuzi akholwa kuye ngenxa yobufakazi bowesifazane owathi, “Ungitshele konke esengake ngakwenza.”
40 So when the Samaritans came unto him, they besought him to abide with them: and he abode there two days.
Ngakho amaSamariya esefike kuye amcela ukuthi ahlale labo, wasehlala insuku ezimbili.
41 And many more believed because of his word;
Ngenxa yamazwi akhe abanengi baba ngamakholwa.
42 and they said to the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy speaking: for we have heard for ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Saviour of the world.
Bathi kowesifazane, “Kasisakholwa kuphela ngenxa yalokho okutshiloyo; manje sesizizwele thina ngokwethu, ngakho sesisazi ukuthi umuntu lo ngeqiniso unguMsindisi womhlaba.”
43 And after the two days he went forth from thence into Galilee.
Ngemva kwalezonsuku ezimbili, uJesu wasuka waya eGalile.
44 For Jesus himself testified, that a prophet hath no honor in his own country.
(Phela uJesu yena ngokwakhe wayetshilo ukuthi umphrofethi kalalo udumo elizweni lakibo.)
45 So when he came into Galilee, the Galilæans received him, having seen all the things that he did in Jerusalem at the feast: for they also went unto the feast.
Wathi efika eGalile, amaGalile amamukela ngokumthakazelela. Ayekubonile konke lokho akwenzayo eJerusalema, eMkhosini wePhasika, ngoba lawo ayekhona khonale.
46 He came therefore again unto Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum.
Wabuya njalo wethekelela eKhana laseGalile, lapho aphendula khona amanzi abaliwayini. Kwakukhona lapho isiphathamandla sasesikhosini esasigulelwa yindodana yaso eKhaphenawume.
47 When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judæa into Galilee, he went unto him, and besought [him] that he would come down, and heal his son; for he was at the point of death.
Kwathi indoda leyo isizwile ukuthi uJesu wayesefikile eGalile evela eJudiya, yaya kuye yamncenga ukuthi eze azosilisa indodana yayo eyayisibangwa lezibi.
48 Jesus therefore said unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will in no wise believe.
UJesu wasitshela wathi, “Ngaphandle kokuthi lina bantu libone izibonakaliso ezididayo lezimangaliso kalisoze lafa lakholwa.”
49 The nobleman saith unto him, Sir, come down ere my child die.
Sathi isiphathamandla sasesikhosini, “Nkosi, woza umntanami engakafi.”
50 Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way; thy son liveth. The man believed the word that Jesus spake unto him, and he went his way.
UJesu waphendula wathi, “Usungahamba. Indodana yakho izaphila.” Indoda yalikholwa ilizwi likaJesu yahamba.
51 And as he was now going down, his servants met him, saying, that his son lived.
Yathi ilokhu isesendleleni, izinceku zayo zayihlangabeza zayibikela ukuthi indodana yayo yayisiluleme.
52 So he inquired of them the hour when he began to amend. They said therefore unto him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.
Isibuzile ukuthi kwakuyisikhathi bani lapho indodana yayo eyasila ngaso, zathi kuyo, “Umkhuhlane uyixolele izolo ngehola lakuqala emini.”
53 So the father knew that [it was] at that hour in which Jesus said unto him, Thy son liveth: and himself believed, and his whole house.
Uyise wananzelela ukuthi leso yiso kanye isikhathi uJesu atsho kuye ukuthi, “Indodana yakho izaphila.” Ngakho yena kanye labendlu yakhe bonke bakholwa.
54 This is again the second sign that Jesus did, having come out of Judæa into Galilee.
Lo kwakungumangaliso wesibili uJesu awenzayo esefikile eGalile evela eJudiya.
